PUD zoning continued until March 20 By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com There was a full audience for the Feb. 18 Jamestown Town Council meeting. Some were there to support the three little boys from the Adams Farm Christian Preschool who lead the Pledge of Allegiance. They marched in with the leader carrying an American flag and all knew the words, to the delight of the audience. Other people were there to voice their opinion on the pro-

posed Planned Use Development (PUD) zoning issue. However, it was previously announced that this matter would be continued at a March 10 special Council meeting. This meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center to accommodate a larger-than-normal crowd. Last October, Dr. Merle Greene, Guilford County Health Director, addressed the Council about new rules regarding smoking in government buildings and vehicles. Dr. Greene highlighted the fact that vaping and e-cigarettes have

become popular and should be included in policies. Mary Gillett, from the Guilford County Board of Health, addressed the Council on Feb. 18 to re-affirm the County’s desire that Jamestown support the new policy, which was adopted on Nov. 7 and went into effect Jan. 1 of this year. In it, the rule states that all tobacco products, including smoking and electronic cigarettes, are banned in all government buildings and vehicles. The Council unanimously approved the policy and the Town

received stickers to place on buildings and vehicles. Underground utility work, mostly storm drainage improvements, is progressing on the East Main Street/Lydia sidewalk project. Fencing that was removed for the work has been replaced. Work is continuing on the East Fork pedestrian bridge and sidewalk project. Approximately 450 feet of sidewalk has been installed and pilings for bridge abutments were done on Feb. 8. The bridge itself was scheduled to arrive last week but NCDOT has delayed

that until they learn of plans to unload it. “Since the closure, the contractor has appeared to make good use of time, considering weather conditions and time of year,” said Public Services Director Paul Blanchard. “We have received mixed input from citizens/residents/commuters about the closure. The closure itself was fairly uneventful and commuters are finding their way to their destinations.” see zoning, page 9

Johnson property development raises ire of citizens By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com It’s the most controversial topic to hit Jamestown since 2010 when original Forestdale residents near West Main Street learned their property had been rezoned in 2009 rom Single Family (SF) to three variations of the Main Street zoning designation for commercial use. The former Potter property at the Potter Drive intersection could become the site of a Bojangles’ fast-food restaurant under this process. Residents organized and met with town officials and held neighborhood meetings to protest the zoning – and won the battle, after several months. The area reverted back to the original zoning. And no fast-food restaurant came. Now residents are protesting the proposed development, and subsequent rezoning, of 467 acres along Guilford College and Mackay roads known as the Johnson farm. Diamondback Investment Group, of Greensboro, a firm organized in 2016, has proposed to develop the property acres into 312 apartments, 700 townhomes, 600 single-family homes

Audience members at the proposed rezoning of the Sedgefield Showgrounds started walking out of the Greensboro Zoning Commission meeting Feb. 17 before the committee actually voted. They may have been surprised to learn the vote was not unanimous. With committee member Ray Trapp recusing himself, the vote was 6-1 to approve the rezoning. The vote against rezoning was by Donald Blackstock. A large number of citizens attended the meeting and gathered in the hallway

Steven Beck serves a quiche and coffee lunch to a customer at Marketplace Café in Jamestown. Old Mill of Guilford. “We call the café a lightbite destination,” Beck said. “It is not a formal restaurant, but a place people can get something to eat on the go or sit and enjoy as they visit one another or use our free Wi-Fi. “It is reminiscent of the original Perky’s, which many people told us they missed.” Beck also sees it as a family-friendly option where Mom can shop while Dad and the kids enjoy a light meal or a treat, or shoppers can take a break from browsing the shop’s eclectic selection of merchandise from across the Triad. “We added more seat-

ing to accommodate more people,” Beck said. “There has not been a day since we opened the Marketplace Café that we have not gotten a positive response about having a spot to get something light to eat.” Triad Marketplace and Marketplace Café, located at 109 W. Main Street in Jamestown, are open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. “As the weather gets warmer, we plan to expand our hours on Friday and Saturday and have music and activities on the patio behind the shop,” Beck said. “Our goal is to be community oriented, a place people can shop, eat, relax and enjoy.”

GSO Zoning approves Showgrounds request after the vote, concerned that the rezoning would allow so many residential apartments. The meeting began with a request by the group for a 60-day continuance on the issue. Raigen Stiefel listed several reasons for the continuance, including the fact that N.C. Department of Cultural Resources saved it from demolition to become part of the Urban Loop several years ago because it was an historical property. She said there had not been enough time to research the rezoning, having heard of the Feb. 6 neighborhood meeting at the last minute. Stiefel added that this is the only equestrian facility in the Triad and that only 68 residences within 600 feet

of the property were notified of the Feb. 17 meeting while many residents of the Sedgefield community had interest. The Zoning Commission denied the continuance. Affordable Housing Management, the developer, requested rezoning of approximately 17.15 acres at 3701 and 3709-ZZ Groometown Road. The change would permit multi-family development, not to exceed 220 apartments with a density of 12.83 units per acre. Phase one would consist of up to 110 apartments, expected to be completed by 2022. Phase 2 would consist of the remaining apartments see gso, page 3

and 700 multi-family homes, bringing the number to 1,612 new units. Opponents have organized into a group they call Jamestown United and have a Facebook page devoted to stopping this development of the Johnson farm as well as a proposed rezoning of the area. The group held a standingroom-only meeting this past Sunday at Jamestown Presbyterian Church to share their feelings and discuss options. A report of this meeting will be in the following week’s Jamestown News. As of Feb. 23, Jamestown United boasted of having over 880 Facebook members (that’s almost 2 members to each acre of Johnson farmland) with Jamestown mailing addresses, including Jamesford Meadows, Cedarwood, Forestdale North and East, Quarterpath Trace, Whittington Hall, Jordan Creek, Riverwalk and the Oakdale community. A poll on Facebook asks, “What type of development would you like to see?” and gives the options of single-family homes only/no commercial; low-density single-family homes/park/green space/ relocated commercial or no commer-

When customers to Triad Marketplace in Jamestown began asking for more variety at the shop’s Guiltless Café, like any good entrepreneur, Steven Beck listened. The result was Marketplace Café, which carries an extended menu of food and drinks. Included are quiche of the week, savory “hand” pies of the week, homemade pimento cheese served with either crackers or a croissant and the number one best seller, homemade chicken salad. “We also have other little grab and go items like chips, crackers and hummus, gluten-free dessert options, designer coffees, teas, smoothies with no additional sugar, which also can have peanut butter or protein powder added for a meal replacement, and sodas in glass bottles for that nostalgic feel,” Beck said. “All the items tie back to our local image.” Some suppliers include Foster & Hobbs, the oldest coffee roastery in High Point, Blue House Bakery in Jamestown, which makes quiches exclusively for the Marketplace Café, Sweetbuns Bakery, also in Jamestown, that provides gluten-free, sugar-free items, Cheesecakes by Alex in Greensboro, which offers seasonal flavors, and a company in Summerfield that creates the popular chicken salad. Among the take-home food items are a variety of flours and mixes from the

Couch Theatre By AMy AndeRSon A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (PG) — Inspired by real life and written about a real-life inspiration, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is a loving biopic of Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks). His story is told through the eyes of an emotional skeptic, Esquire magazine writer Lloyd (Matthew Rhys), who is assigned to write a short article on Rogers as a hero. His graciousness and empathy, kindness and love are on unapologetic display in everything he does, so it’s no surprise that interviewing Rogers — who touched so many people’s hearts, both young and old — changes Lloyd.

From the Front Leap Year – a gift of time By noRMA B. denniS freelaNce writer ndworddesign@gmail.com

Good news for those who think time is passing them by too quickly – you get to add an extra day to 2020. Instead of the usual 365 days found in most years, 2020 is a Leap Year and will include 366. The additional day, known as Leap Day, is added to the shortest month, February, giving it 29. Adding a day to the calendar at approximately four-year intervals is not meant to cause confusion. It is simply a way to keep our modern-day Gregorian calendar in alignment with Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It actually takes the earth longer than 365 days to make that journey – 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds longer to be exact. Earth’s yearly trip around the sun begins on the March equinox and is called a tropical year. Without the addition of a leap day, each calendar year would begin about 6 hours before the Earth completed its orbit around the sun. Every 100 years, the seasons would shift by approximately 24 calendar days. If adjustments were never made, people in the Northern Hemisphere eventually would be celebrating Christmas in the middle of summer. Because the Earth’s trip about the sun is not exactly 6 hours longer than a calendar year, however, a leap day cannot be included on the calendar at exactly four-year intervals. The Gregorian calendar addressed that problem with another modification.

A leap year can only occur when the year can be evenly divided by four. But century years cannot be leap years unless they can be divided by 100 and 400 as well. Using these rules, the years 2000 and 2400 are leap years, but 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 will not be. Julius Caesar first introduced the concept of a Leap Year in his Julian calendar over 2,000 years ago. But he followed only the first rule, that the year be divisible by four, allowing the calendar to drift from the tropical year. The introduction of the Gregorian calendar, which skipped leap days occasionally, realigned the calendar with the astronomical seasons. Although most people enjoy having an extra day in their year, certain facts and folklore accompany Leap Day. Babies born on it are known as “leaplings.” A leap year birthday is a sign of good luck. Except for Leap Year, these people choose to celebrate their birth on Feb. 28 or March 1. According to History.com, about 4.1 million people around the world have been born on Feb. 29, and the chances of having a leap birthday are one in 1,461. An Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies helps people born on Feb. 29 get in touch. There are about 11,000 members worldwide. The twin cities of Anthony, Texas, and Anthony, New Mexico, both call themselves the Leap Year Capital of the World and hold four-day leap year festivals. Leap Day was once called Ladies’

Day or Ladies’ Privilege, and women could propose to men on that day. That, of course, was before the age of “enlightenment” when today’s women not only often pay for dates, but also might pop the proverbial question of matrimony at any time. In some cultures, however, it is considered bad luck to get married during a leap year. It has been said that Queen Margaret of Scotland imposed a fine on any man who rejected a leap year proposal. Since she would have been 5 at the time the fine was supposedly made, that fact might be hard to accept. Folklore also suggests the weather always changes on Friday during a leap year. Several well-known events happened during leap years. A few include: Rome burned, the Titanic sank, the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, the first three warrants for arrests in the Salem Witch Trials were issued in colonial Massachusetts, Ben Franklin proved that lightning is electricity and gold was discovered in California. Also, the Henriksen siblings from Norway – Heidi, Olav and Leif-Martin – were all born on Leap Day and Hank Aaron became the highest-paid Major League Baseball Player. In addition to Leap Year and Leap Day, there are also time calculations known as Leap Seconds, but that is quite another story. Now that you know the reasoning behind Leap Year and some facts about it, one question remains. How are you going to use the gift of an extra day?

coNtiNued from froNt and is expected to be completed by 2024. Two new access connections will be added on West Vandalia Road. A portion of the site is in Greensboro and a portion is in Guilford County. During the rezoning hearing, David Levy, executive director of Affordable Housing Management, added two conditions to the original request of a maximum of 220 residential units, namely that a 6 foot tall opaque fence be erected during construction and that the maximum building height not exceed 50 feet. “The proposed [rezoning] will allow uses complementary to the existing uses of commercial, multifamily and single-family uses in surrounding areas,” Levy said. He pointed to retail and commercial development north and west of the property. “Multi-family use of this property makes good sense and is a good transition from the singlefamily and church to the south,” he said. “This development will have a positive economic impact to the surrounding retail and commercial businesses and create jobs.” Speaking in favor of the development, Clifford Hearn said he was a member of the church which abuts the property and that church members were in favor. Rev. Ellis Carson, the church’s minister concurred and said that people were the most vital resource a community could have. “This could bring young families into the community,” Carson said.

air their views. One person said that Wayne Road through Sedgefield is already a cut-through and vehicles are speeding and damaging mailboxes along the sides of the road. Wayne Road becomes Vandalia Road alongside the Showgrounds as it crosses Guilford College Road. Kelly Wyrick, who lives on property just south of the site, spoke of the history of the Showgrounds and said most local colleges use it for equestrian events. Stiefel, a real estate agent, and several others spoke about the already overcrowded school system. She noted that nearby Sedgefield Elementary is at 122 percent capacity and Millis Road Elementary at 147 percent. “The people of Sedgefield Showgrounds and the community it serves are very concerned about … the distinctiveness, i.e., the Showgrounds and cohesiveness of the area around the Showgrounds,” she said. “We don’t think a three-story apartment complex is consistent with what is going on in that neighborhood. We are absolutely not opposed to the apartment housing, but there is so much land in Greensboro, we wonder why it needs to happen in that lot.” “I understand the importance of affordable housing but I also understand the importance of education,” said Julia Bullard. “My son will be entering the school district next year and it is already overcrowded. Adding another 220 units … the school system simply cannot take on more children.” “People are saying new housing Opposition will build the community – but we Opposition then had a chance to are a community,” said Saman-

tha Terry who has been riding at the Showgrounds since she was a child. “It was a place I felt safe.” She stated that her horse has blossomed and won prizes because of his association with Sedgefield Showgrounds. “To take it away is going to take away part of the community.” Carla Swink also lives just south of the site. She grew up helping out at the stables. “The family that ran those stables, and are still in a partnership with the Showground today, have done more for the community than we can honestly stand here and express,” Swink said. She added that getting out the shopping center is already a problem and traffic backs up along Vandalia Road. Adding two entrances into the new development to align with shopping center

entrances will create more traffic problems. David York hoped the community could raise enough money to purchase the Showgrounds from the owners, who have not actually sold the property yet. Wyrick said the owner did not want to sell, but a post on the Sedgefield Showgrounds website said he wanted to give it up. The website states, “We were hoping that a buyer who would want to continue running horse shows would emerge, but while we have had some conversations with interested parties, no buyer has emerged to date. We do think that this facility has a lot of potential for a buyer who wants to operate and add other equestrian events, while owning a piece of property that will continue to appreciate. “We have run these shows for a

WHY THE SHOWGROUNDS ARE IMPORTANT

Raigen Stiefel is one of the organizers of the opposition. She said the group now has a Facebook page for supporters to comment, www.facebook. com/SaveTheSedgefieldShowgrounds. “We are long time neighbors and members of the community where the stables reside,” Stiefel said. “We have a great appreciation for the history of the Showgrounds and for the value it brings to the community.” Stiefel is a real estate agent but that is not what influences her passion. “I’m doing this because I have an affinity for the history and cohesiveness of a community,” she said. “I think it’s important to retain things as precious as this space. There are so many possibilities of what this space could be for the Triad. No one has taken the time to consider this. Also, I know children that have benefited from riding and competing at the Showgrounds. You can see the positive impact this has made in their lives.

long time and Ashley, Johnny and I are just at the point in life where we want to transition to other things. However, the primary purpose of this note is to let everyone know there will be horse shows next year.” Wyrick believes the property was eligible for National Historical Landmark designation in 1991 and thinks this caused the Urban Loop to bypass. “So it is possible to be designated as a National Historical Landmark,” she said. Everyone agreed that affordable housing is needed, but this was not the best location. A petition opposing the rezoning and apartments had 385 signatures and was presented to the Zoning Commission. The list is still growing, according to Stiefel.

“Do people realize that this is the only property of this sort in the whole Triad? This makes it unique, special and worth saving. “We are not opposed to the apartments. I know there is a need. This is entirely about the destruction of the Showgrounds. We want to see the Showgrounds continue. We would love for there to be new owners with an interest in continuing its current use and hopefully build on additional uses that would provide even more benefit to the surrounding neighbors and community.” Stiefel said there had never been a “for sale” sign on the property and a lot of people were surprised to learn of the sale. “We have no way of recreating the Showgrounds,” she said. “We can’t just use another vacant lot and Affordable Housing Management can. The community has so much more to lose with the loss of the Showgrounds.

Letter to the Editor We are delivering the following letter to town officials today: Thank you for reading this document publicly in my absence, as I am unable to attend this meeting. My name is Al Stewart and I currently live in the Jordan Creek development in Jamestown. I lived and worked most of my life in Greensboro serving 30 years with the Greensboro Police Department and retired as the Field Operations (Patrol) Bureau Commander. I am also an Army veteran with service in Vietnam. After my retirement, I worked with the Guilford County District Attorneys Office and worked overseas for six years with the Department of Defense and Department of State. My wife and I moved to Jamestown to get away from the issues that plague Greensboro. Jamestown is a perfect blend of small town kindness and convenience to the amenities of the Triad area. I attended the February 13th meeting hosted by Diamondback Investments to outline their proposal for the property identified as the Johnson Farm. Mr. Zack Tran did most of the speaking and I gave him the benefit of the doubt regarding his plans for the property. During the Q&A of the meeting, Mr. Tran was asked about the price point of the single-family dwellings planned for the development. Mr. Tran stated at the meeting he did not know. Less than 12 hours later (the morning of the 14th), he was quoted in the Greensboro News and Record that the median home price would be around $250,000. After reading that comment, I knew that Mr. Tran was less than forthcoming and that I could no longer trust what he says as the truth. I am not opposed to the development of the Johnson Farm property. I am however opposed to the development plan offered by Diamondback. In my opinion, if they were planning developments such as Whittington Hall or Jamesford Meadows, we would not be having this meeting and while most would prefer to see the farm as it is today, there would be no protest regarding the development. Jamestown is a beautiful, safe and convenient place to live. Building a development as offered

by Diamondback would be the snake that bites with crime and the unpleasant view of vinyl boxes. As a law enforcement professional, I know that 311 apartments would generate crime in the area. The transient behavior of apartment dwellers brings with it a lack of pride in community. Trash, abandoned vehicles and lack of upkeep are all symptoms of infill apartments. Additionally, the low price point of the singlefamily housing does not mesh well with the Jamestown community. Residents of Jamestown take pride in the beauty of the area and that is a major drawing card for people moving into the town. Jamestown has history, beauty, quaintness and convenience that bring people into the area. So develop the Johnson Property. Build an area that brings with it the class and beauty Jamestown now has. Build something that Jamestown will be proud of rather than a low cost development that will become an eyesore in the future. If you want to see an example of what is being offered by the developer, simply ride to the edge of Jamestown and look at the utilitarian vinyl boxes at the intersection with Penny Road. These homes in Wrenn Farm stand in stark contrast to the beauty of the Pennybyrn property across the street. Is this what the Jamestown Council wants or is willing to accept? With a beautiful golf course, a great park such as the Wrenn Miller facility and a historic public library, is this the best Jamestown can do? The school crowding and traffic issues will not fall on the shoulders of the Jamestown Town Council but the crime will. Why allow such a beautiful stand of property to become a blight in Jamestown? While I believe Jamestown should annex the property and pass a Planned Unit Development ordinance, it should be to control the best and most favorable use of the property. Additionally, I hope that Council does their due diligence in checking the reputation and financial standing of Diamondback or any other developers in the future. Respectfully, Al Stewart

William barr is his own man By RiCh lowRy

Can the republic survive Attorney General William Barr? That’s the question that has seized the media and center left, which have worked themselves into a full-blown panic over an attorney general who is, inarguably, a serious legal figure and one of the adults in the room late in President Donald Trump’s first term. Some 2,000 former Justice department employees have signed a letter calling on Barr to resign. An anti-Barr piece in The Atlantic opined that “it is not too strong to say that Bill Barr is un-American,” and warned that his America is “a banana republic where all are subject to the whims of a dictatorial president and his henchmen.” This is impressive heavy-breathing over an AG whose alleged offense doesn’t hold a candle to the greatest hits of his predecessors: Woodrow Wilson’s attorney general A. Mitchell Palmer carried out raids to arrest suspected leftists in the wake of World War I. Bobby Kennedy, serving as his brother’s attorney general, authorized the wiretapping of Martin Luther King Jr. William Barr changed the sentencing recommendation of Roger Stone from its original, excessive call for a sentence of seven to nine years. It’s not clear why the country would collapse into dictatorship if Stone is sentenced to fewer than seven years in prison, especially given that the judge has complete discretion to impose whatever sentence she sees fit. The suspicion is that Barr was doing Trump’s bidding, but the attorney general maintains — and he hasn’t been contradicted — that he was surprised by the initial, maximalist sentencing recommendation and he intended to amend it prior to Trump’s fulminations.

If Barr were truly Trump’s henchman, he would have squashed the Stone case rather than merely recommending a little less jail time at the end. Indeed, Barr said in an ABC News interview that he considered the Stone case a “righteous” prosecution. Barr allowed the Mueller probe to reach its conclusion unmolested. The extent of his alleged interference was, prior to the release of the report, summarizing its findings in a way that wasn’t harsh or detailed enough for Trump’s critics. Finally, he declined to prosecute former Department of Justice official and frequent Trump target Andrew McCabe for lying to investigators. If Barr is really Trump’s Roy Cohn, nailing McCabe would have been Job One. No, all the evidence suggests that Bill Barr is doing his best to render fair justice in the treacherous environment created by a president of the United States who routinely comments on pending criminal cases and investigations and by the Justice department’s own politically fraught, overly zealous intervention in the 2016 election and its aftermath. It’s no wonder that Barr has a poorly disguised contempt for his critics, many of whom are so inflamed by their opposition to Trump that they’ve lost any sense of standards. In a peppery speech to a Federalist Society conference last year that is now one of the counts against him, Barr rightly warned that “it is the left that is engaged in a systematic shredding of norms and the undermining of the rule of law.” At the end of the day, they really don’t want Trump to have an attorney general, but that’s not going to happen. If they force Barr out — or more likely, Trump’s continued tweeting pushes him over the edge — they’ll miss him when he’s gone.

What's a safe CbD dosage for a small dog? By SAM MAzzottA Paw’S corNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my 6-year-old, 16-pound Dachshund, “Sally,” hurt her back and couldn’t walk, a veterinarian recommended expensive surgery. I found another vet who was able to treat her without surgery and she is walking again. To manage her pain, I have been giving her 1,000 mg of CBD oil, five drops twice a day. Am I giving her too much or too little? Every product has a different option. — Wayne O., via email DEAR WAYNE: A twice-daily dose of 5 drops of a 1,000 mg formulation of CBD oil is an awful lot to give a dog of Sally’s size. By my ballpark estimate, she’s getting 6 mg to 8 mg of CBD in each dose. That may be OK in the short term for treating severe pain, but high doses of CBD can cause temporary changes in eye pressure, which over time can per-

manently damage the eyes. I understand your dilemma, though. Many charts for pets recommend 600 mg to 1,000 mg formulations for large dogs over 100 pounds, and much smaller formulations of 75 mg to 150 mg for small dogs like Sally. But some formulations for pets go as high as 3,000 mg, and there is no set standard. Even worse, the chart calculations for CDB products are confusing. Some charts list dosages in milliliters, others in milligrams. Who wants to do math when your pet is in pain? I’d like you to work closely with Sally’s vet to find an effective CBD dosage to safely treat her pain. As she recovers, you should lower the dosage further, to below 4 mg per dose, to help manage any chronic pain from her injury. A lower dosage will also cost much less than what you’re paying right now. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Manning vying for nomination in 6th Throughout much of our history, Triad area residents have been represented by at least two Congressmen. But now, thanks to various court rulings and legislative maneuverings, Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem will all fall into the newly formed 6th district, as well as all of Guilford County and much of Forsyth. The new alignment favors a Democrat, By Jim Longworth so Republican incumbent Longworth at Large Mark Walker declined to seek another term. As a result, two Republicans and five Democrats filed for the open seat, and they will seek their party’s nomination in the March 3 primary. Democrat Kathy Manning is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Michigan Law School. She was a partner in a Greensboro Law Firm for 15 years before starting her own business, and she has been a tireless community servant for the past 30 years, working on bringing jobs to the area, and school readiness programs for disadvantaged kids. Most recently, she helped spearhead the effort to build the new Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. This is Kathy’s second run for Congress, having been defeated by Ted Budd two years ago in what was then the 13th district. Manning appeared on Triad Today this past weekend. Here are highlights of our conversation:

JL: Why are you running for Congress? KM: Well I took on a tough race in 2018 because I was so deeply worried about the future of this country, and I wish I could say all of the issues I was worried about, from healthcare, prescription drug prices, to the environment, to gun violence, to women’s reproductive rights, to jobs, and high-quality education for all of our kids, I wish all of those things had been solved, but they haven’t. Things have actually gotten worse. JL: Trump’s proposed budget contains cuts in Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and Food Stamps. Your thoughts? KM: I think it’s ironic that he gave a State of the Union address that was so misleading, and made it seem like he was really good for the country, but his budget shows what he is really all about, and it’s going to be devastating for people all across this district, and all across the country. JL: I know access to healthcare is a personal thing for you and your family. Does this mean you are in favor of Medicare for All? KM: You’re right. This issue is personal to me because of the fight I had getting the medication that my daughter needed when she was diagnosed with a chronic illness. Everywhere I go and tell that story; I have people lining up to tell me about the struggles they have paying for their medication. I met a woman in Winston-Salem

Neighborhood meetings Diamondback held two neighborhood meetings at GTCC on Feb. 13 to unveil the project. Company representatives heard many objections from audience members, most notably related to a proposed commercial site adjacent to the apartments facing Guilford College Road and across from the Cedarwood development. Most of the comments were against the apartments but in favor of single-family dwellings. They requested any commercial development be moved to another location on Guilford College Road, away from Cedarwood. They were opposed to a new traffic light at Cedarwood Drive that would connect with an entrance to the new development. Zach Tran, one of the principals of Diamondback, said about 7 percent of the property would be commercial but they would wait and see what businesses would be interested in coming in, rather than going after such businesses. Cedarwood residents voiced their preference that the property remain farmland. Following the Feb. 13 meetings, Diamondback issued a press release stating the issues they gathered from the meetings: concern about commercial area across from Cedarwood; concern about the amenity location across from Jordan Creek townhomes; desire to preserve the farmhouse on the property. Desire to catalogue artifacts: concerns about traffic; concerns about schools; desire to make the commercial area consistent with small town feel of Jamestown; concerns about the 312 apartment units; and desire for sidewalks on Mackay Road. “We will take all of these concerns into

consideration as we look at possible revisions to our plan,” said Tran. Annexation probable The Johnson property and Cedarwood are both in Jamestown’s Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction, or ETJ, meaning the Town has control of the areas but they are not technically within the town limits. The Town has an agreement with High Point and Greensboro that only Jamestown can have control of this area. Once Diamondback receives zoning approval, the company is expected to request annexation, bringing the town’s size to about 3.5 square miles, up from 3 square miles. The town currently has about 4 square miles in the ETJ. Cedarwood annexation was proposed in 2010 but rejected. The town’s population – currently 4,416 – could double in size once the Castleton Village is fully developed. Diamondback said it would take 5-10 years to complete. The apartments will be built first, followed by townhomes and singlefamily units. Zoning Before Diamondback can start construction, the Jamestown Town Council must approve a new zoning district, Planned-Use Development, or PUD, which will satisfy Diamondback’s needs. That decision was expected to take place at the Council meeting Feb. 18. However, due to expected high turnout relating to the Johnson property as a PUD zone, the Council plans to continue the agenda item until March 10 at 6:30 p.m. in a special Called Meeting in the town’s Civic Center. Only the PUD zoning is on the March 10 agenda, not the Johnson property development. “Council will not be discussing the Johnson property on March 10, as the Town has yet to receive any requests for rezoning or anything else related to the development,” said Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson. It is inevitable the property will be sold and developed at some point, if not by Diamondback, by some other developer.

continued from front cial at all; nothing and remain agricultural; single-family homes and smaller commercial relocated; or similar plan as presented. As of Feb. 23, the majority of answers (79) are for single-family homes only, no commercial. Next (64) comes low-density SF homes for ages 55 and up and relocated or no commercial. Third (58) wants the area to remain agricultural. No one voted to the plan as presented by Diamondback. The group is also trying to get the Guilford County Commissioners involved in their endeavor.

last week who told me she had just been diagnosed with an illness that required special medication. She’s on Medicare, and yet this medication cost her $2,100 dollars a month. I see this problem day after day. We worked so hard to get the Affordable Care Act in place, and it protects people like my daughter with pre-existing conditions. I think what we need to be doing is building on that, building on the ACA, and I think we need a robust public option. I would start by allowing people to buy into Medicare at a younger age. JL: What is it about your background and experience that will make you an effective Congresswoman? KM: I have lived in this district for more than 30 years. I’ve raised my children here. I have worked as an immigration attorney, and I’ve worked on all kinds of projects to make our community better. I have a proven track record of leadership and of being able to bring people together to get tough things done. Those are the leadership qualities I want to take to Washington so that I can get things done for the people of this district.

continued from front Councilwoman Rebecca Mann Rayborn and Planning Board member Sherrie Richmond recently attended a presentation on the AARP Livable Communities Program. They asked Mark Hensley, assistant state director of AARP NC Triad, to address the Town Council. Hensley stated that most older people want to stay in their own homes and communities. He highlighted several points that are needed for a livable community: outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment communication and information, and

community and health services. More information is available at www.aarp.org/ livable-communities. In other business, the Council approved the date for the annual budget retreat as March 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the clubhouse at Jamestown Park. The public is invited to attend. Dennis Sholl was appointed as an alternate to the Planning Board. A budget amendment of $50,000 was approved to cover unanticipated legal fees related to the Lori Herron matter. During the public comment portion of the agenda, two residents spoke for the need of garbage totes to

go along with the recycling totes already in use. They cited the crows and other animals, which destroy the bags before being picked up. Following the regular session, the Council went into closed session to discuss matters related to attorney/client privilege regarding Lori Herron vs. Town of Jamestown and a legal contract. The closed session lasted 25 minutes. When the Council returned to regular session, it directed Town Attorney Beth Koonce to move forward with negotiating the contract with Flowers Bakery for the Welcome to Jamestown sign.

Got Goat?

meat. It’s 2.6 grams of total fat per 3-ounce serving is about one-third of beef’s 7.9 grams and less than half of chicken’s 6.3 grams. A serving of goat meat represents just 4% of your daily value of total fat, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Goat meat also has more iron per serving than beef, pork, lamb or chicken. “Consuming goat meat hasn’t been part of our culture, but its popularity is rising as people search for healthy, lean, hormone-free sources of protein,” said Lindsey Stevenson, a University of Missouri Extension nutrition and health education specialist. Goat meat may sound exotic, but it can be prepared much like lamb. The cuts are very similar: leg and leg cuts, sirloin, loin, rack of goat and shoulder cuts. Diced and ground goatmeat also may be available. For consumers in the U.S. and Canada, look for goat meat at traditional grocers or in specialty markets. Goat meat also can be ordered online. Ethnic stores or specialty butchers may have goat on hand or be willing to order some for you.

Animal protein staples in America have traditionally been beef, pork and poultry. Until now, that is! American consumers are warming up to goat meat. It’s a healthy protein choice that 75% of the world has been enjoying for a very long time. Goat meat is a staple in Asia, Latin America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and the Middle East. Here in the U.S.A., the popularity of goat meat is growing by leaps and bounds. Goat’s profile as a sustainable and lean meat choice is no doubt contributing to interest in this healthy protein. Since the molecular structure of goat meat is different from that of beef or chicken, it is easier to digest. Goat meat is leaner than beef and has just as many grams of protein per serving. It also is lower in saturated fat than chicken. A 3-ounce portion of goat meat has 122 calories, considerably less than beef’s 179 and chicken’s 162. In terms of fat, goat is a much leaner and more readily available

You might be surprised to learn that much of the goat consumed here in the U.S. comes from Australia. Imports of goat meat to the U.S. have more than doubled in the past 10 years, and 98% of that imported goatmeat comes from Australia. Because Australian goats are pasture-raised in a natural environment and are not given any additives or added hormones, Aussie goat meat is lean and healthy, and has a natural flavor. Much like its beef and lamb, Australian goat is a safe choice, as Australia is internationally recognized as free of all major livestock diseases. And because Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of goat meat, you can count on its long-term commitment to food safety. Because it’s very lean and low in fat, goat meat is par-

ticularly well-suited to slow cooking methods such as braising and stewing, and in flavorful, spicy dishes like this Australian recipe for goat chops. It’s a delicious way to warm up on a cold winter day! GOAT CHOPS WITH TOMATOES AND CHICKPEAS 4 goat chops, bone-in 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika 1 1/2 teaspoons ground oregano 1 onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 (15-ounce) can chopped, peeled tomatoes 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1/8 teaspoon cloves 1/8 teaspoon sugar

No screening test for bile duct cancer By keith RoACh, M.d. to Your good health DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. — Anon.

ing programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific — a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early — apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts — and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery).

DEAR ANON.: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and light-colored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in DEAR DR. ROACH: My East Asia, where there are screen- 22-year-old daughter was diag-

nosed with overactive bladder at the end of June. She tried medications, but they made her sick. She was given a prescription for a physical therapist to work with her for her condition. Unfortunately, she has hit dead ends. How can she find a physical therapist to work with her? — A.F. DEAR A.F.: Physical therapists, like most other health care professionals, have individual skill sets. Pelvic-floor physical therapy requires a level of expertise that not all physical therapists have. I suspect she may have just been calling physical therapist offices near her and not finding a therapist with that expertise. A quick internet search found a good number of specially trained therapists in the area where she lives. There are many online reviews of physical therapists, just as there are reviews of doctors and dentists. They have some value, but I would be cautious about both overenthusiastic and overly negative reviews. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
