Crimes rose in 2020 in Jamestown By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Capt. Matt Holder of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Jamestown office (District 3) gave an annual report of crime in Jamestown at the January Town Council meeting. Part One crimes are murder and non-negligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny/theft and arson. “Part One offences seem to be the ones that are most important to people,” Holder said. Holder noted there were 62

reported Part One crimes in 2020 in District 3. They included 36 larcenies and 17 burglaries. There were also eight motor vehicle thefts, one robbery, seven aggravated assaults and no rapes. The figures indicate an increase of 22 total crimes from the previous year, ending several years of decreased crime figures, with increases in five of the seven Part One crimes. March and August were the busiest months for the Sheriff’s Office, with 15 and 10 crimes respectively, and there was one officer-involved homicide. Homicides and robberies were each up 100 percent, aggravated assault up 133 percent, and burglary and

motor vehicle theft each up 70 percent. Rape was down 100 percent and larceny down 20 percent. Whittington Hall had many of the motor vehicle larcenies and burglaries. Holder said these incidents were up nationwide. “It’s been a different year for us,” Holder noted. Perhaps Covid-19 was the cause of some of the aggravated assaults, as people stayed home and got on another person’s nerves. Calls for service (794) decreased nine percent over 2019, again,

Holder ple

believed, due to peobeing home and less a target for burglaries. This is the lowest number in the past five years. There were 1,094 calls for service in 2017. This year, GCSD created several new units, Street Crimes and Special Enforcement, all under Holder’s command. “I use them all the time,” he said of the teams used to supplement regular enforcement. “I try to be as creative as I can to use these units to assist with specific crimes.” These teams are traffic-based, uniformed officers working coop-

Fire department calls decreased in 2020 By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department’s Interim Chief Derek Carson presented the yearly report at the Jamestown Town Council Meeting on Jan. 19. “PSFD responded to 2,891 calls last year (Jan.1-Dec. 31) district wide,” said Carson. “Calls were down due to people staying home for Covid-19. That figure reflects a decrease of 677 from the previous year. Of that number, 1,593 were medical incidents, 240 were firerelated, 237 were motor vehicle accidents and 535 were service or good intent incidents. The Jamestown station #46 is staffed by one lieutenant, two firefighters and several resident firefighters, some of whom are training at GTCC. “We have a partnership with the academy at GTCC so we have resident firefighters who live in the fire station,” Carson said. “It increases our manpower but it also gives them a chance to build up their experience level as well. A lot of times they end up sticking around becoming full-time firefighters or volunteers with us.” This year, Jamestown was the third-busiest station within the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department, with 536 calls, down from 767 calls the previous year. The station has been the second-busiest station for several years. Of those calls, the 348 medical incidents greatly outnumbered any

Many of those calls were to Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center, but calls were down there this year. Carson said the nurses or EMS handle incidents there. “We weren’t dispatched on some calls this year,” Carson said. “EMS handled it alone. This lowered possible exposure to the virus. “One thing that Jamestown is fortunate to have is EMS housed in the fire station. A lot of times EMS responds alongside us. That’s really key for the residents of Jamestown to have that unit readily available. The Jamestown station responded to 26 fire-related incidents, 22 motor vehicle accidents and 59 service/ good intent incidents. There were also 81 fire alarm events. Responding to calls is not the only duty of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department. Fire prevention

and education is important. The department holds educational and fire prevention programs for the public during the year, but some of these were cut back in 2020 due to Covid-19. Since schools were not open, these programs were not given. “All of our numbers are down for 2020, primarily our fire prevention numbers,” Carson said. “Since we couldn’t get in the schools, we had to get creative. We did some remote things online with the teachers, prerecorded things and got them out.” Some of those events were held at Station 46 in Jamestown. A total of 462 adults and children participated in the 13 programs in Jamestown. Additionally, local firefighters installed 6 smoke alarms. Carson urged homeowners to contact the station to have a free smoke alarm installed by checking the PinecroftSEE FIRE, PAGe 2

eratively with High Point and Greensboro police departments. The two-month old Special Enforcement team uses Ford Mustangs and has been nicknamed the Mustang Team. They work radar and traffic enforcement in high traffic-volume areas. “When you’re stopping cars you’ll run across other stuff, too,” Holder said. “It’s common for them in a week to stop 300-400 cars and in those cars we’ll run across felony violations, narcotics, firearms, stolen equipment, things like that. “We run across all kinds of SEE CRIMES, PAGe 2

SWG vs Dudley Men’s Basketball

The shorthanded Southwest Guilford Cowboys hosted the Panthers of Dudley High School in a vital conference clash on January 29. The long and physical Panthers came ready for war. The Panthers outplayed the Cowboys from the tip. The Cowboys came out flat and unmotivated, and the scoreboard would tell no lies. After the opening frame the Panthers held a 16-9 lead. The second quarter was an even uglier affair, as sluggish Southwest couldn’t put 2 steps together in the same direction. The disjointed half came to a close with the Panthers up 39-17. The hosting Cowboys put together a little better effort in the third frame that cut the margin slightly and the frame closed at 47-31. It was too little and too late as the Cowboys couldn’t sustain anything positive in the final frame as they ran out of gas and time. The Panthers held strong and the Cowboys fell 68-48. The Panthers were led by the extremely hot shooting Ayden Gamble with 30 points. Southwest was paced by, DeAnthony Butchee with (17, 4 Stls, 3 Asts, 3 Rebs), and Claude Cormack with (13, 3 Rebs, 2 Stls). dudley Southwest

SWC continues to serve the community Members of the Sedgefield Woman’s Club have managed to sustain their organization during Covid19 challenges by conducting Zoom meetings, sprinkled with a few in-person gatherings. Their year began in September 2020 with an exclusive Zoom meeting and continued into the next two months with combined Zoom and in-person options at Sedgefield Country Club. “We had to cancel our annual fall rummage sale, but conducted our Christmas fundraiser with SWC’s first virtual fundraiser, the “Spirit of Giving Campaign,” said

Patti Morgan, club president. “It was a success and culminated on Dec. 4 with a delightful luncheon in the ballroom at Sedgefield County Club.” The highlight of the Jan. 29 meeting, held only on Zoom, was a talk by guest speaker Dr. Greg Phipps, who spoke about depression in general and as it related specifically to the present pandemic. The meeting also was filled with vital information about the club as it moves forward. • The General Federation of Women’s Clubs – North Carolina District 4 Arts Festival will be held virtually on Feb. 13. Entries will include those from SWC members and the Arc of High Point, which were judged locally.

• Club members are currently participating in an Arts and Crafts Supply Drive. Items they collect will be donated to RHA Health Services, The Caudill Home, and Quality Care Home III, all of which serve adults with cognitive, intellectual and physical impairments. • The February meeting will include speakers Million Mekonnen, director, and Sandra Thompson, operations manager, from

the North Carolina African Services Coalition. • Leslie Sher, a member of the Civic Engagement & Outreach committee, is helping coordinate a collection of business attire clothing from other members. These will be given to local women veterans seeking employment. • Kennedy Williams, a senior at Ragsdale High School, was named the winner of the Sallie Southall Cotton Scholarship at the GFWC District 4 level. She will advance to the State competition in March. Scholarships are awarded based on the candidate’s character, scholastic records, evidence of intellectual promise, demonstration of ambition and leadership

ability, as well the need for financial assistance. Williams was noted especially for her athletic ability in the areas of track, dance and cheerleading. She plans to seek a degree in nursing and later join the military. • A shredding event for the community is scheduled for April 17, with the time and place to be announced. The event will also include a food and book drive. The food will be donated to the David Wilson Food Pantry at the Lutheran Church of Our Father on Groometown Road and books will be given to local school libraries. (The exact time and place for this event will be noted in an upcoming issue of the Jamestown News.) In other business, Pam

continued from front crimes in the enforcement of traffic violations.” Holder has used these units on Guilford, Guilford College and Mackay roads, Forestdale Drive and Gate City Boulevard, along with Hwy. 29-70 and I-85 south. The Street Crimes team (six officers) began just after the Covid-19 pandemic started and Holder called that timing “terrible.” “However, they’ve been really productive and they have been very helpful with some specific crimes to Jamestown,” he said. In Division 3 for 2020, a total of 10 search war-

rants were issued, 75 firearms seized, $115,000 seized by the Department of Justice/N.C. Department of Revenue as drug money, 25 vehicles seized or recovered, approximately 400 warrants, 2,200 citations and 36 DWIs. The Street Crimes unit alone in seven months issued 20 search warrants, confiscated 79 firearms, seized $120,000 and made 400 criminal charges. The Division runs 8.59.15 minutes per response times. The overall District response times are slightly higher averaging 11.1512.30 minutes.

The Jamestown division of the Guilford County Sheriff’s office is located at 211 Hillstone Dr. Division 3 covers from Hwy. 421South to West Market Street toward Kernersville. It is staffed by a captain, lieutenant, five sergeants, four detectives, 24 patrol deputies and an office manager. District 3 services the incorporated towns of Jamestown, Pleasant Garden and the unincorporated areas of Climax and those neighborhoods outside the city limits of Archdale, High Point and Greensboro within our District boundaries.

continued from front Sedgefield Fire Department website or calling 336-399-4421. The year’s insurance inspection resulted in a class rating of 2 in Jamestown and 3 in the rest of the department, the same as the previous year. The lower the rating is, the better. Very few fire departments in the state have the Class 2 rating. Insurance ratings are used to determine insurance premiums for commercial businesses. In Jamestown, property value exposed to fire was $956,500 but property value lost from fire was $43,700, meaning 95 percent, or $912,800 in property value, was saved from fire last year. “We had a very good year in Jamestown, fire-related,” Carson said. Carson was proud that the reaction time for the Jamestown station had stayed at 1.42 minutes. Travel time to sites is 5.05 minutes. According to the PSFD website, “In the fall of 1951 there were several bad house fires in the Pinecroft-Sedgefield vicinity. Several residents of the area decided to call a meeting at the Guilford Courthouse to organize a fire department. Robert Neely, a lawyer and resident of the district, made

NANCY JANE SCOTT WHISNANT Nancy Jane Scott Whisnant was born at home on July 20, 1931, daughter of Rev. W. L. Scott, a Methodist preacher from Ashe County, N.C., and Bertha Stanbury Scott, a saintly sermon-writing woman who was the daughter of the keepers of a boardinghouse on what is now the campus of Appalachian State University. Nancy and her five siblings grew up as Methodist nomads, living for a few years at a time in diverse places like Rutherford College, Forest City, Concord, and Polkville. It was in Polkville where the parsonage was next door to the home of a lanky redheaded comic who was smitten with her and presented a store-bought cake for her 15th birthday. Bob Whisnant and Nancy married just two weeks after her 20th birthday, on August 4, 1951. They had daughters Linda in 1953 and Judy in 1956, and a son, Scott, in 1961. Nancy is survived by her children, their spouses, Todd DePriest, John Bell, and Celia Rivenbark, respectively, and grandchildren, Nathan Bell (and wife Emily Gary) and Lucy Bell and Sophie Whisnant and many adoring nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by all her siblings: Alice Armfield and Rachel Jones of Jamestown, N.C., W. L. Scott, Jr. of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Mary Clark Seelye of Berkeley, Calif., and James A. Scott of Cleveland, Ohio. Around 1960 Nancy went to work as the financial secretary of Jamestown United Methodist Church, where she and her family were fixtures for more than 50 years. She greeted callers, broke in preachers, counted donations, published bulletins, and comforted the community with her warm smile and self-effacing, gentle manner until she retired in 1997, the same year her

husband Bob died suddenly. All the while Nancy’s main preoccupation was nurturing and raising their three children. She taught them by example about courage, commitment, love, and forgiveness. She was keenly interested in every detail of their lives and delighted with their every accomplishment. Often, when they were little, she would exclaim to each one, “I’m crazy about you!” Having lost her own parents in her mid-20’s, she devoted herself to her children with all her heart. When the grand mural is painted, the centerpiece of Nancy’s life will be a table laden with delicious food. Although not wealthy or well educated in the culinary arts, she was a master Southern chef, a folk artistic genius with fried chicken, mac and cheese, and strawberry cobbler, to name just a few of her myriad creations. Her knack for perfect crispiness, and velvety texture, and divinely crusted fruit was only surpassed by her knack for serving it all at once, piping hot, and making it seem effortless. She will be remembered for the generous and understated way she had of giving these creations at times of sadness and celebration. Nancy, a person of deep faith, died on January 21, 2021, from complications of COVID-19. A service celebrating her life will be held at a later date. Some of her ashes will be spread in her beloved Ashe County. Memorial gifts may be made to: Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund in memory of Nancy Scott Whisnant, Greensboro College, 815 W. the application for incorporation. A meeting was held in his office on March 28, 1952. The district was established on a membership basis. A few months later, the Board of Directors authorized the purchase of a new pumper that pumped 500 gallons of water per minute. The new pumper was put into service on Jan. 28, 1953. The truck was housed in the rear of the Gate City Truck Stop on High Point Road, which was leased for $1 per year from Frank Joyce. The department was originally on a subscription basis, with each property owner paying ten cents on one hundred dollar evaluation. Mediterranean diet stands the test of time By ANGELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA

acterized by the emphasis on plant foods such as grains, vegetables and fruits. Olives, olive oil, nuts, beans, legumes, seeds and herbs/spices are also part of the Mediterranean eating style. The Mediterranean lifestyle also recognizes the importance of physical activity and social interaction at mealtimes. Grains should be mostly whole grains and can include whole-wheat breads, whole-wheat pasta, oats, brown rice, couscous, quinoa or barley. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, frozen or canned. The nutrients are similar between the three forms. Canned vegetables can have more sodium, so rinse before using or buy lower sodium options. Fruits and vegetables can be cooked or eaten raw. Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean eating style. Olive oil is the main source of fat and is used in cooking, as salad dressing, as a light drizzle on vegetables or as a dip for bread. Olive oil is higher in heart-healthy unsaturated fats and should replace saturated fats like butter or margarine. Nuts, beans, legumes and seeds are the main sources of protein, healthy fats and fiber. Common beans include chickpeas (garbanzo beans), cannellini beans, kidney beans, lentils and black beans. Nuts are good as a snack, on a salad or added to other dishes. Herbs and spices add flavor and aroma to foods. They reduce the need for salt and can be rich in health-promoting antioxidants. This delicious baking-pan recipe for Salmon Roasted with Broccoli and Tomatoes is an effortless way to incorporate the Mediterranean diet eating plan into your lifestyle.

The Mediterranean diet is in the news again, not only because it’s the start of a new year, but also because it was named as one of the most popular and healthiest diets by several publications. The origins of the “Mediterranean diet” are lost in time because it’s based on the eating habits of the Middle Ages, in which the ancient Roman tradition — on the model of the Greeks — identified in bread, wine and oil products a symbol of rural culture and agriculture. These were supplemented by sheep cheese, vegetables (leeks, mallow, lettuce, chicory, mushrooms) and a little meat, and among Romans, a strong preference for fish and seafood. According to a National Center of Biotechnology Information article, the discovery of the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet is attributed to American scientist Ancel Keys, who researched the correlation between cardiovascular disease and diet for the first time. In the 1950s, Keys was struck by a phenomenon, for which he could not, at first, provide a full explanation. The poor population of small towns of southern Italy was, against all predictions, much healthier than the wealthier citizens of New York, many of whom had Italian ancestors who emigrated to the United States. Keys suggested that this depended on food, and tried to validate his original insight, focusing on foods that made up the diet of these populations. This study proved that populations that had adopted a diet based on the Mediterranean diet presented a very low rate of cholesterol in the blood and, consequently, a minimum percentage of coronary heart disease. This was mainly due to the plentiful use of olive oil, bread, pasta, vegetables, SALMON ROASTED WITH herbs, garlic, red onions and other foods of BROCCOLI AND TOMATOES vegetable origin, and a rather moderate use 1 pound fresh or frozen of meat. skinless salmon fillet The modern Mediterranean diet is char- 2 tablespoons olive oil
