VETERANS RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY In show business there is a saying, “The show must go on.” Wearing masks and social distancing might be considered a glitch in the celebration of veterans this year. But the Jamestown Veterans Committee realizes the importance of continuing the tradition of recognizing and thanking veterans for the work they do to keep our country safe and our freedoms alive. Committee members have planned a full program for Veterans Day at Wrenn Miller Park in Jamestown (across from the fire department). They are inviting the community to join them Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. for an official ceremony, which will begin with raising the flag. The guest speaker for the event is retired Marine Colonel Charles A. Jones. Show your pride in our veterans by wearing red, white and/or blue and consideration for those around you by wearing a mask. STEPPING OUT OF THE BOX WITH PIEDMONT COTILLIONS This year, Piedmont Cotillions, LLC, will be celebrating 10 years of teaching at the Sedgefield Country Club. Founded by local resident Geri Sheffey, the business provides an opportunity for youths to learn social etiquette and ballroom dance. The life skills gained from the classes can be carried into adulthood. Participants, which include boys and girls, learn about manners, talking to their peers, being respectful, table etiquette and ballroom dances. Just like everything else, the business has continued to evolve, offering new curriculum such as cell phone etiquette, including proper ways to text. “To know I have played a small part in shaping so many young people throughout the years means the world to me,” Sheffey said. “By the end of five weeks of classes long-lasting friendships are formed.” This year has not been a normal year for cotillion. Piedmont Cotillions, however, has continued to find solutions to reach its students, offering etiquette classes via Zoom. While fall in-person classes are postponed, spring enrollment is now open. Piedmont Cotillions offers classes at several locations throughout North Carolina and Virginia for students in grades 5-8. For more information, visit the organization’s website www.piedmontcotillions.com.

After a short hiatus due to the coronavirus, the Jamestown Business Association is once again working to support its goal of promoting businesses in the greater Jamestown area and of improving the community. In addition to bringing positive attention to local businesses, members help sponsor town events and donate to local non-profits. During a recent Zoom meeting, members had the opportunity to discuss the progress of their businesses. “We currently have 33 members, but everyone did not attend the meeting,” said Deborah Palmer, president of the group. “I was so pleased to hear that those who did were doing well and that no one was sick.” Members are moving once again into community service.

They have chosen to sponsor a hole for the Jamestown Rotary Golf Tournament. They also are recognizing front-line workers from the local Jamestown sheriff’s office and fire department. “We wanted to show them how much we appreciate their service to the community and let them know we are behind them,” Palmer said. In conjunction with the Rotary Club, Town of Jamestown and other Jamestown businesses, JBA members are helping create a special Christmas on Main event this year. Although it will have a different look and feel from holiday celebrations of the past, it will still be a way for all these groups to give back to the community. More information about the event will be available in the future. There will be a Christmas on Main Facebook page to keep up with how the event is developing.

The Jamestown Planning Board will again discuss the plans for Castleton Village at their regular meeting Nov. 9 at in the Civic Center at Town Hall. This marks the sixth meeting the Board has held – four were considered “special” or “called” meetings – on the development planned for the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. The public hearing at each of these meetings was continued to the following meeting.

and non-profit organizations began to meet monthly for breakfast at Penny’s Restaurant. Golden served as JBA’s first president. As the group grew, members later established lunch meetings. Shortly after the organization started, members decided to hold a festival to promote their businesses while providing a variety of crafts and entertainment for the community. The first Jamestown Day was spread throughout Jamestown with activities in front of the library and in Jamestown Center. For years, JBA members chose to participate in the annual Jamestown Christmas parade and sponsored a float for the event. In 2000, the Jamestown Business Association began a formal grant program to provide money to organizations SEE JBA, PAGE 2

A tough nut to crack, but very useful BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com This time of year, it’s a little dangerous to walk at the Mendenhall Homeplace, not to mention other areas of Jamestown. Not because the ghost of Minerva Mendenhall may be around, but watch out for the black walnuts that are falling to the ground with a thud. With walnuts the size of tennis balls, being hit by one could cause quite a headache. “I’ve learned when I hear leaves rustling to move fast,” said Shawn Rogers, director of the homeplace, with a laugh a few years ago. There are possibly three varieties of black walnut trees on the property and if the nuts are not collected, twisted ankles could occur in those people not careful where they step. Rogers uses a garden weasel nut gatherer contraption that rolls along the ground, capturing the nuts, which look like small green apples, in a wire basket. When full, he spreads the tines apart, empties the nuts and starts over. This is a lot easier than raking up the nuts. But once that the nuts are picked up, now what? It takes a lot of hard work to extract the brown nut. Cracking the hard green shell is not easy. Many people throw the nuts in their driveway and drive over them to crack the shell. But the old-fashioned way is to use a corn sheller. Mendenhall Homeplace has several SEE NUT, PAGE 2

Castleton discussion to continue BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

The Jamestown Business Association was established about 1993. Although much of its beginning history is lost to memory, the group continues to make slow and steady progress toward meeting its mission goal. Selina Golden, owner and operator of a children’s consignment shop in Jamestown, was instrumental in starting the JBA. She felt local businesses needed an outlet to support one another and the town. An assortment of business owners

At the previous meetings, the Board has discussed items in the development plans they believe would complement the existing appearance of the town. Items such as appearance, size of lots, density, buffering, number of apartments and/or townhomes, location of amenities and townhomes, and other considerations. All of these items must be finalized, and new plans drawn up by the developer, Diamondback Investment Group, before the several properties that make up the development can be rezoned from agricultural to planned unit development. Due to Covid-19 restrictions,

public comment has not been allowed and there has been no audience. However, in-person public comments will be possible on Nov. 9 and advance signup is not necessary until the meeting date. No more than 25 people will be allowed in the meeting room at one time so speakers will be ushered into the meeting one at a time if needed. The Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The meeting will still be streamed live on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page, http://www. youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

When the black walnut falls from the tree, it is approximately 2.5 inches in diameter, but once the hull is removed as well as the inner shell, only a small amount of “meat” (the lighter area) is left for use.

Golf course revenue continues to rise BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com The first quarter of the 20202021 fiscal year for the Town of Jamestown shows an increase in the number of rounds played at Jamestown Park Golf Course. “The golf course continues to operate at near full capacity on a daily basis,” said Ross Sanderlin, golf and recreation director. “Compared to 2019, there were 1,350 more total rounds played this quarter and a 15 percent increase in green fee, cart fee and range revenue.”

A slight increase in rounds of golf played in September of this year brought a slight increase in golf revenue at Jamestown Park Golf Course compared to the same month last year. There were nearly 100 more rounds played this year. Driving range use was up nearly 1,000 players and golf shop sales were up nearly 63 percent. Net operating expenditures were down nearly 38 percent. The grill in the clubhouse is still operating as take-out only. Clubhouse rentals are still suspended due to Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings of large groups.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT that promoted local youths. Funds were dispersed by a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. The way JBA carries out its mission has changed throughout the years, but its goal continues to remain that of building area businesses and serving the community. Current officers include Deborah Palmer, president; Jamie Hall-Erath, vice president; Cliff Paddock, treasurer; and Eric Cornelison, secretary. “We will be taking nominations for officers for 2021 and we hope to have some kind of social event before the year is over,” Palmer said. NUT

CONTINUED FROM FRONT antique corn shellers in the bank barn. After the outer shell, or husk, is removed, the nut itself still has a very hard shell, which must be removed before the “meat” can be harvested. They need to dry for a few weeks before cracking. A rule of thumb is to leave them until you can hear the nut rattle when you shake it. As for the shells, throw them away after the nut is removed. Do not compost. There is a toxin in the shells that could kill some plants. Although a nuisance, black walnuts have many practical uses practiced by our forbearers, including making ink, stain, dye, soap. In addition to grinding up the walnuts to make cakes and cookies,

Some uses for black walnuts Black walnuts are native to only approximately 15 states, including North Carolina. Whether it is the shells themselves, a concentrate made from the shells, or products made from the nut, the black walnut tree and the nuts may be considered one of the most useful of nature’s plant life. • Metal cleaning and polishing of jet engines • Oil well drilling to sharpen drills and maintain seals in fractures • Paint – will cover many types of surfaces including taped and filled joints • Weed killer • A filler in dynamite

betes and some neurodegenerative conditions. Early settlers did not have the well-stocked shelves of pharmacies of today and made use of anything they could find to cure ills. (See sidebar.) While medicinal use of black walnuts is no doubt still practiced in parts of the country, its use is not regulated by the FDA, and should be closely monitored. Black walnut trees are hardwoods and have many uses including making furniture and gunstocks from the lumber. During World War I, the wood was used for airplane propellers.

• Used by NASA as powered thermal insulation in rocket nose cones • Abrasive cleaner in soap, cosmetics, body scrubs and toothpaste • Additive to liqueurs and cordials • Stains and dyes for fabric and wood, hair dyes and ink • Dietary supplements • Laxatives • Astringent • Used by early settlers to cure diarrhea, soothe sore gums, cure herpes, relieve inflamed tonsils, prevent weight gain, calm hysteria, eliminate morning sickness, cure boils and skin wounds. And as a gargle.

Cactus is a prickly treat BY ANGELA SHELF MEDEARIS THE KITCHEN DIVA I was shopping in an ethnic grocery store when I saw a huge pile of fresh Prickly Pear cactus pads in the produce section. Prickly Pear cactus is thought to be native to Mexico and is eaten as a vegetable. The cactus is called “nopal” in Spanish, and the pads or stems are called “nopales.” Mexico exports 40,000 pounds of nopales pads to Texas every day. They’re also grown as an export crop in Central America and Israel. The pear-shaped fruit on the ends of the nopal pads are called “tunas,” and range in color from a greenish-white to purple. If the tuna fruit are sweet, they’re eaten raw or used to make wine or as a sweet syrup. If sour, they’re cooked and incorporated into a variety of recipes. I’ve always wondered about the first adventurous cook to take this prickly crop and turn it into a delightful dish! Preparing the fresh cactus pads takes time and care, as all of the prickly spines and thorns must be carefully removed. After the pads have been prepped, they’re grilled or boiled until tender. When sliced thinly, the nopales are called “nopalitos.” They look like French-cut green beans and have a similar texture. You can buy nopalitos in a can or jar, and both the fresh nopales and the canned variety are widely available in ethnic supermarkets. I prefer the ease and convenience of using the canned nopalitos

because it’s difficult to prepare them properly the first few times. Be sure to rinse the canned nopales well before using them. Nopalitos are a popular ingredient in Mexican dishes. They’re scrambled with eggs and served during the Mexican celebration of Lent, used as a taco filling, as a vegetable in soups, or breaded and eaten like French fries. Halloween is over, but those uncarved orange pumpkins and heirloom gourds on your porch or mantel can have a new purpose and life for a fresh decor look right now — as well as serve as a stunning centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. Coat them with an artistic gold shine, then hollow them with kids’ assistance for a natural vase. If you don’t have any pumpkins, they are still abundant and cheap this month at farms, garden centers and in the produce section of grocery stores. A medium size pumpkin is ideal for a centerpiece, but you might think about gilding mini pumpkins, too. Transform them into alluring votive candleholders to add a seasonal sparkle on your table or buffet between the turkey, cranberries and pies. Here are three simple steps for making a gilded pumpkin floral arrangement: 1. On a newspapercovered surface, an adult should cut off the top with stem of a medium-size, firm and smooth pumpkin, creating an opening that is 4-5 inches in diameter. Save the top portion. Kids can dig in and scoop out the pulp and seeds with their hands and a spoon. Wash the outside with a damp cloth. Let dry. 2. On a newspapercovered surface outside, an adult should spray the

exterior of the pumpkin and the cut-off top portion and stem with gold metallic spray paint available at craft and hardware stores. Let dry. 3. Line the inside of the pumpkin with foil or plastic wrap. Place a chunk of damp florist foam trimmed to fit snuggly in the hollowed-out portion. Kids may poke trimmed stems of flowers, leaves and twigs into the foam, one at a time, until the arrangement is complete. Set on an attractive waterproof plate. 4. For an added touch, poke a florist pick or trimmed skewer into the center of the saved top and stem of the pumpkin. Poke the opposite end into the side of the rim. 5. Add water to the foam

as necessary to keep flowers fresh.

Bonus Idea: For golden pumpkin votive candleholders for your table, set a tea light and its metal casing or glass tea light jar inside the carved out cavity, or use a battery-operated tea light. An adult should always be present when burning candles.

Note: Acrylic paint in a metallic gold shade also works if you prefer not to use spray paint, although it takes longer to dry and may require an additional coat.
