P&R approved grant request, talks ball fields The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee met for the first time in over two years on March 7. Much of the meeting was devoted to discussion of grant opportunities for the Town, but, more specifically, Jamestown Park. The town has several options for grants; Parks and Recreation Trust Fund

(PARTF), Accessability, Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and Parks to Trails. PARTF appears to be the best choice at this time. It is a 50/50 match, meaning the Town would pay for half of the funded amount. Projects are awarded points, however, preference is given to new projects. The more points, the better the grant application looks to the grant committee. “The PARTF funds are

in abundance right now,” said Scott Coakley, parks superintendent, of the Town’s chances. The committee was given five options to choose from, each with a points value. All but one option included a dog park and dog park shelter near the entrance to the park and the greenway. The option unanimously chosen by the committee was establishment of a dog park, a natural play area and nature trail in the

wooded area to the south of the basketball court, shelters at the dog park and basketball court, relocation of the volleyball court and renovation of the basketball court. Estimated cost for these projects is $403,576. The shelters are the most expensive cost in this option. The Town council must also approve the proposal before the application is submitted. The application deadline is May 22. An inclusive playground

at the park was discussed but not included in the options due to a possible Accessibility grant. One criteria for PARTF grant acceptance is the establishment of a master parks and recreation plan. The Town Council adopted the P&R plan in April of 2021. PARTF requires a public meeting for grant applications. Anna Hawryluk, town planner said there would be a public meeting scheduled at some date

Smoke alarms save lives By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Having smoke alarms in a structure is not just important, it is a matter of life and death. Statistics show that three out of five home fire deaths result from having no working smoke alarms and over one-third of home fire deaths result from fires where there were no smoke alarms at all. Half of home fire deaths happen at night when most people are asleep. The Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department is committed to saving lives by working with schools, teaching fire prevention to students and teachers. Firefighters also routinely visit neighborhoods to remind residents to check their smoke alarms. The department will

Bradford resigns as girls’ basketball coach Ben Bradford has stepped down as the Ragsdale High School girls’ basketball coach. He will remain at the school, however, as an assistant coach on the boys’ baseball team. Bradford had a winning six seasons at Ragsdale, with an overall record 109-40 and 4016 in conference play. The team won the HAECO Invitational title in 2018. While at Ragsdale, Bradford coached his two daughters in basketball. His son Braden is a freshman on the baseball team. Another son will soon be attending Ragsdale.

By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. But Amy Wood Pasquini painted a picture with words as she took members of the Jamestown Rotary Club on a verbal tour of North Carolina at their March 8 meeting. From the coastal waterways of Manteo to the mountains of Asheville, Pasquini described various towns and locations across the state in such expressive detail that the mind’s eye could visualize the scenic places she denoted. Pasquini is travel and events director of Our State magazine, a publication that has been celebrating North Carolina since 1933. She is also the executive producer of content for Our State, a 16-time Emmy Awardwinning television show produced by PBS North Carolina. “Several members of the club subscribe to the magazine and enjoy the many opportunities that North Carolina offers as it relates to activities and destinations,” said Jerry Brett who arranged for Pasquini to speak. “I understood that Amy Jo is a very good speaker and felt everyone in the club would enjoy hearing her.” The rapt attention of her listeners bore out his supposition. Pasquini provided a brief description of the magazine’s founder and its continual growth. She detailed her own exodus from and return to North Carolina, and her subsequent career with Our State magazine. She grew up in High Point, but could not wait to get away from the “small town.” Although she did move, it did not take long for her

to get feedback from the residents. Discussion turned to the ball fields — or rather, what to do with them. “Before we do anything, the whole infrastructure will need to be done,” said Coakley. Pipes need to be replaced, sinkholes eliminated, etc. “It’s not going to be too long before we have to do something.” Town Manager Matthew Johnson commented

install smoke alarms free of charge to those in need. The American Red Cross also will install a free smoke alarm in your home. Just contact the local agency. Every bedroom should have a working smoke alarm and there should be at least one alarm on every level of the home, including the basement. Alarms should be tested monthly and batteries changed at least once a year. You may have as little as two minutes to escape a fire The alarms should not only be tested and batteries changed, but should be replaced after 10 years. They do go bad. Technology has changed in recent years. The current interconnected smoke alarms, unlike electric or battery, are all connected. If one alarm goes off, they all go off. If a

Local food bank expands service Renaissance Food Bank has increased its capacity to serve twice as many people in the area who may be suffering from food insecurity. Distribution of dry goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, and more will be available to anyone beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturdays at Renaissance Church located at 5114 Harvey Road in Jamestown. Renaissance Food Bank also is increasing its volunteer staff on hand to help with the increased demand. In addition to food relief, clients will be asked if they have any additional material needs which could be met by CityServe of the Triad, a partner agency of Renaissance Food Bank. A photo ID is required to comply with some government grants, but no other documentation is necessary. “Recent donations and grants have allowed for the expansion of food bank facilities including a walk-in freezer and more refrigerators to accommodate fresh foods” said Pastor Paula Bost, executive director of the Renaissance Food Bank, Renaissance Food Bank is a partner with Second Harvest Food Bank and also receives food donations from local grocery stores throughout the Jamestown area. Anyone interested in volunteering with Renaissance Food Bank can contact Bost at 336-4072674 or paulabost@RENtriad.church.

Why is NC stuck at the bottom of "right to know" states? By sandy hurley & bill moss North carolina press association For decades North Carolina has ranked near the bottom of all states in the country when it comes to the public’s right to know what went wrong when a government employee is transferred, demoted or terminated for disciplinary reasons. There have been efforts to change that, including a bill introduced 25 years ago by a young state senator named Roy Cooper, who now of course is North Carolina’s governor. So “Sunshine Week” March 13-19 is an appropriate time to examine where North Carolina stands on the people’s right to know. Founded in 2005 by the American Society of News Editors, Sunshine Week is designed to heighten awareness about the importance of open government and freedom of information and advocate for change where change is needed. Change is needed badly here. The best hope for that

openness and accountability is ready to be taken up now by the Legislature. For the third time since Gov. Cooper’s 1997 bill, the Legislature has a chance to make history by enacting legislation that opens public employee personnel files to inspection when bosses or elected leaders take disciplinary action. Passed last year by a bipartisan majority in the N.C. Senate, the Government Transparency Act of 2021 would open personnel files in cases of misconduct by public school teachers and professors, city and county managers, and state and local law enforcement officers. All North Carolinians should ask how the wall of secrecy around these disciplinary records was erected in the first place. One clue lies in a letter presented to the Senate Judiciary Committee last spring voicing full throated opposition to the Government Transparency Act by none other than the state’s public school teachers lobby (NCAE), the North Carolina state employees association (SEANC), and the Teamsters Union.

Area Deaths & Funerals

The opposition caused the bill to stall in the state House, though it remains alive in that chamber and can be taken up at the leadership’s signal. The bill has the full support of the N.C. Association of Broadcasters, the N.C. Press Association, and the N.C. Sheriffs’ Association, not to mention consistent and broad support in polling of taxpayers and voters. This election year — when every seat in the General Assembly is on the ballot — is a good time for those voters to remind candidates of their interest in knowing about the conduct of government employees they’re paying. A fix for North Carolina’s legacy of personnel files locked in file cabinets sits on the goal line. Legislative leaders and the rank and file should be eager to punch it in. Sandy Hurley, Regional Publisher, Mount Airy News Media Group, is president of the North Carolina Press Association. Bill Moss, publisher of the Hendersonville Lightning, is the NCPA’s Legislative Committee chair.

Diamondback offered to construct baseball fields on a portion of the property at their own expense, then cede the fields to the Town of Jamestown. With that option in mind, the Master Plan included two options, to keep the fields at Jamestown Park or convert that space to something else. There was much discussion among Parks & Recreation Committee members as well as the Town Council, neither completely committed to removing the fields from the park. The discussions turned into a moot point when Diamondback was denied a rezoning request in November 2020 by the Planning Board and by the

Town Council in February 2021. The company later sold the property to D.R. Horton in June 2021. Horton has not submitted plans at this time. “We want to get more feedback from the public on the ball fields,” said Hawryluk, adding that it would cost nearly $2 million to renovate the fields. This design calls for two age-12-and-under-size baseball fields and one regulation-size soccer field on the site of the current fields. Soccer is one of the biggest uses of the activity fields at the Park. Synthetic turf would be used instead of grass and the new soccer field would overlap both baseball fields. New lighting would also be installed to allow for evening play. Since the ball fields are not a new addition to the

park, the Town is not eligible for PARTF grants for the project. However, the Town can look into funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund from the Department of the Interior. There is no rush to make a decision on the ball fields as any changes to the park will be phased in, with the fields being last. The committee also learned that the 12-yearold Pedestrian Plan is being updated to include a bicycle plan. The new committee will meet four times a year. In other business, Jay McQuillan was elected chair and Doug Sampson, vice chair. Ironically, these were the only two members of the current committee who attended the previous Jan. 7, 2019 meeting.

bite dripped down your chin into the sink. Picture that. The beauty and charm of the state does not have to exist only in the mind or in print, however. It can be experienced firsthand by participating in travel tours sponsored by Our State magazine. The next one is planned to Beaufort on April 7-10. One highlight of the visit will be a meal at the Beaufort Grocery Co. Contact David Cartier at 252-503-7449 and let him know it is about the Our State magazine trip. “It’s interesting that I have been to virtually every place across North Carolina that Amy Jo talked about,” Brett said. “Her animation when talking added a lot. I enjoyed it when she mentioned she did not talk about religion, politics and BBQ. That’s probably smart, especially when it comes to BBQ, because I will defend Eastern North Carolina BBQ to the death.” “I enjoy reading Our State magazine,” Steve Owen added. “When you feel the weight of it in your hand you know there is going to be something good inside.” Of course no meeting is complete without a bit of business and the upcoming Bow Stafford Memorial Golf Classic, scheduled for June 24, was the topic for the evening. Andrew White, a guest for the evening and owner of Chick-fil-A at Grandover Village, has agreed to be a cart sponsor, as well as provide gift certificates for the event. Cart sponsors have signage placed in golf carts during the tournament. Earthtones Recording Studio will be a beverage cart sponsor. These sponsors have signs in the vehicle that is used to sell drinks. There are also hole sponsors whose signs are placed at various holes along the course. “We are currently seeking more sponsors to help with the event, said Richard Newbill, chair for the 2022 tournament. “Sponsorships help with the expense of putting on a tournament.” Anyone interested in helping as a sponsor or participating in the tournament may contact Newbill at richardenewbill@yahoo.com. As in the past, proceeds will go to Feeding Lisa’s Kids, a non-profit that provides food to area children in need and their families. A donation of $10,100 was given to that organization from funds raised at the last golf tournament. The Jamestown Rotary Club meets weekly, rotating between the clubhouse at Jamestown Park and the Box Seat in Greensboro. Create your own signature spice blends By patti diamond divas on a dime An easy way to add great flavor to your meals while saving money is making spice blends at home. You’re likely paying a premium for packaged spice blends that contain mostly salt and sugar. Another great reason to make your own spice blends is that you choose what your family is eating. You control the sodium and sugar while avoiding MSG, partially hydrogenated oils, modified food starch and chemical preservatives. Your blends are made fresh and customized to your family’s taste and dietary preferences. It’s fun to have a flavor experimentation party where everyone discusses their preferences about seasoning foods. It’s a great way to explore flavors of various herbs and spices and create blends. Even young children can play along. Give them bowls and measuring spoons as they learn to measure, do simple math and stir to their heart’s content. When purchasing your herbs and spices, remember the bulk foods section of the grocery store, if you have one. The beauty of buying in bulk is you pay for only what you need. You can literally purchase by the teaspoon.

Next, you’ll need containers. Glass is preferable as it’s reusable, easy to clean and won’t hold aromas. Baby food jars are perfect, as are small glass canning jars. Here are some basic recipes to get you started. Then you can experiment and get creative to make your own signature spice blends. You’ll notice I didn’t include salt. That amount is always to your taste. CHILI SEASONING — 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon cumin, 1/2 tablespoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon oregano, 1/2 teaspoon paprika. Seasons 2 pounds of ground beef or other meat for making chili. POULTRY SEASONING — 1 tablespoon sage, 1 tablespoon thyme, 1 tablespoon rosemary, 1/2 tablespoon parsley, 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper. Optional additions can include granulated garlic, celery seed, lemon peel, ground ginger, allspice, savory, oregano, dried onion, paprika or cayenne pepper. This makes enough to season two whole chickens.

1/2 tablespoons oregano, 1 tablespoon basil, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1/2 tablespoon parsley, 1 teaspoon red chili flakes, 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper. Use this in pasta sauce, Italian dressing, burgers and soups, or as a seasoning for ground beef, chicken or fish. REAL LEMON PEPPER — 3 lemons, 2 tablespoons whole peppercorns. Preheat oven to lowest setting. Using a vegetable peeler, peel the yellow part of the lemons, leaving the white pith behind. Onto a parchmentlined sheet pan, spread peels in a single layer. Place in oven for 2 hours or until dry. Place the dried lemon and peppercorns into a spice grinder and blend. Serve with fish, chicken or pork.
