Changing the law:

Area native was the first female attorney in North Carolina By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com At one time in our not too distant past, most people believed that a woman’s place was in the home. Some still do. During Tabitha Ann Holton’s lifetime 1854-1886, that was definitely true. So, it was very shocking to the North Carolina Supreme Court when she arrived Jan. 8, 1878, in Raleigh, from her home in Jamestown, to take the bar exam to become an attorney. There had never been a female attorney in the state. Only five other states had allowed it, and none of them in the South. But here was Tabitha, described in newspapers of the time as a “sprightly brunette, of medium size, an intellectual cast of countenance, although not strikingly handsome” and “a modest, timid, unassuming young lady.” Little is known of Tabitha Holton’s life, although there are

detailed newspaper reports about her law quest. She was born in 1854 in Iredell County but the family moved to the Jamestown area in 1871 to property her ancestors received as a land grant in 1732 She was the third in a family that may have numbered eight. Her father, Quinton, was a Methodist Protestant minister, often traveling away from home for long periods of time. But when he was home, Quinton made certain his children had excellent educations. Reportedly fluent in several languages himself, his children followed his example and Tabitha was said to have known three or four tongues. She also loved the law. As two brothers, Samuel and AE studied at home, Tabitha read their books and learned along with them while she was also attending Greensboro Academy. She read law books borrowed from area attorneys who later tested her on what she learned. At the age of 23, after she graduated from Greensboro Academy in 1878, she went with brother

Planning Board approves LDO changes By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The document containing suggested changes/updates to the Jamestown Land Development Ordinance is 589 pages. It took the Planning Board about 19 minutes on March 8 to approve these changes and send the document on to the Town Council. The North Carolina General Assembly recently merged development regulations for cities/towns and one for counties into a new law, General Statute 160D. While the new law does not make major policy changes or shifts of authority granted to local governments, it does provide many clarifying amendments and reforms that will need to be incorporated into local development regulations. Benchmark Planning assisted Matthew Johnson, Jamestown planning director, with the update. Benchmark is also working with the Town on an update to the Comprehensive Plan. Johnson did not go

through every change. Some of the changes were to formatting and typographical errors in the original document. “Essentially this is an update to comply with Chapter 160D,” he said. “There are not a lot of substantive changes to our ordinance based on 160D. A lot of the changes are references to the law in the ordinance. “There has been a little bit of change based on the way we do business and some changes relating to state law that have happened over the past couple of years or so, and federal law. There were some cases that happened at the Supreme Court that we had to comply with.” Johnson said the most changes occurred in the sign ordinance but do not make a large change in the current law. These were related to federal legislation changes. “It is based on content neutrality. We can’t make decisions based on what the SEE LdO, PAGe 6

Samuel to Raleigh to take the state bar exam – without ever attending law school. They planned to move to Kansas to set up a practice and felt that, since Kansas had a twoyear residency requirement for the bar, a license from North Carolina would allow them to practice immediately. No woman had ever applied to the State Supreme Court to become a lawyer in North Carolina. Justices looked but found no statute prohibiting it, but not actually allowing it either. Statutes indicated a male gender, but it was argued that it referred to mankind, not just man. While the 18 men who came for the exam were allowed to take it, Tabitha was asked to come back the next morning, Jan. 9, for more discussion. As she waited, she contacted Albion Winegar Tourgée, a former judge and lawyer who had Photo by Carol Brooks recently moved to Raleigh from Tabitha Holton is buried in the shade of two cedar trees alongGreensboro where he had settled, side her father at Springfield Friends Meeting in High Point. Sharing God’s concept for mercy and grace By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com (Mercy is the act of withholding deserved punish-ment. Grace is the act of giving unmerited favor.) When Dianne Keene participated in her first mission trip with her church in 2003, her intent was to bless the people in Honduras. “I quickly learned that I was the one receiving the blessing,” she said. “That trip impacted the way I serve the Lord in Honduras and at home as well.” Currently, Keene is executive director of operations on an all-volunteer board of directors in America, which serves Mercy and Grace Ministries in Honduras. There are eight full-time employees in Honduras. The mission of Mercy and Grace is to reach people for Christ while meeting the needs of the poor. “We use whatever tools the Lord shows us,” Keene said. Ricardo Venegas’ dream of a ministry in Honduras to reach the poor and spiritually lost in his county became a reality in 2005 when he and Mark Eskridge of King, N.C., began what was later to become Mercy and Grace Ministries. Eskridge helped Venegas buy a Toyota truck. After acquiring a projector, generator and DVD player, Venegas traveled to remote areas of Honduras showing

In the late 1990s, Venegas had been arrested as an illegal immigrant while working in the United States. He was deported back to Honduras and told he could never return to the U.S. Divine intervention allowed him to return legally in 2007 and he and Eskridge officially started Mercy and Grace Ministries, soliciting support

from churches and friends. When Venegas returned to Honduras following his visit to the United States, he purchased a used school bus, hired a staff and began facilitating mission trips from America to Honduras. The ministry grew rapidly and the staff applied for and was awarded 501(c)(3) non-profit status SEE MERCy, PAGe 2

North carolina’s connection to china’s arms buildup Bloomberg explained, “Thucydides Trap refers to ancient Greek historian Thucydides’ explanation of the Peloponnesian War as an inevitable clash between a rising Athens and the established regional power, Sparta. The term was coined by Graham Allison, a professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, who argued that China would threaten to displace U.S. influence, possibly resulting in an unhealthy rivalry or armed conflict.” Allison, the North Carolina connection, grew up in Charlotte, was a star football player at Myers Park High School, and attended

Davidson College for two years before transferring to Harvard. Later at Harvard, he became the longtime leader of Harvard’s Kennedy School and more recently has served as director of Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Allison says his interest in Thucydides was sparked by George Labban, his Greek professor at Davidson. Labban promised his students that if they worked hard on his course, they would be able to read Thucydides in the original Greek. Allison worked hard and read Thucydides’s account of the war, including its origins in the competition between

the Athens, the established power, and Sparta, the rising power. In his 2017 book, “Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap?,” Allison argued that the U.S. and China were on a collision course because: (1) China was quickly overtaking us as the world’s dominant economic power, and (2) China’s firm aspirations will put it in direct confrontation with the U.S. Allison pointed out that China expects, over time, to reassert its historic dominance over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and territories claimed by Japan, The

Mercy and Grace Ministries is non-denominational and is funded solely by private contributions and churches. “During a normal year, the ministry facilitates between 20-25 mission teams to Honduras,” Keene said. “Last year, the pandemic kept us from doing that. We had two teams go at the beginning of 2020 and two at the end of the year.” Since it started, Mercy and Grace has installed about 20 community water filtration systems and thousands of bucket purification systems in individual homes. The bucket system purifies dirty water into clean. The organization also participates in feeding programs; ministering in hospitals; medical clinics; sponsoring youth, pastor and marriage conferences; Christian concerts; vacation Bible schools; tent revivals; construction projects; school assemblies and evangelism of all types. Education also is an important part of the organization’s ministry. It supports a sponsorship program that provides school uniforms and supplies as well as food for the families. The cost to sponsor each child is $35 per month. “Most children do not go to school past the 6th grade,” Keene said. “The purpose of the sponsorship program is to educate children so they can make a difference in their own country.” One young man her family helped sponsor through medical school finished his

Mercy and Grace purchased property in the village where Venegas grew up and constructed a facility called Mercy House. It is used to house mission teams from the U.S. and support many of the organization’s other ministries, such as a Bible institute, skills school, agricultural school, summer camp, and soup kitchen. “In the future, we hope to further develop that property so it can be used to its fullest potential for the glory of God,” Keene said. Keene is the owner of Sophisticuts Salon in Jamestown. Juggling a career, family and volunteer work with Mercy and Grace keeps her very active. “I wear a lot of hats, but serving the Lord is my passion,” she said. “I think he called me to (the work with Mercy and Grace) because he knew I needed to be busy. I would rather be in the middle of the Lord’s will than in the middle of my own.” To learn more about Mercy and Grace Ministries, or to contribute to the project, check the website mercyandgraceministries.org or call Keene at 336-451-5527.

But Tabitha and Samuel did not go to Kansas as planned, rather setting up a practice in Dobson. There are few records indicating her involvement in the practice other than specializing in legal research and office work. There is only one instance recorded where she appeared in court, although her portrait hangs in the courthouse in Yadkinville. Tabitha’s career as a lawyer was short-lived. In 1886, after only eight years in practice, she contracted tuberculosis and died June 14 at age 32. She was buried with family members at Springfield Friends Meeting in High Point, only a few miles from her Jamestown home. The tombstone recognizes her historic accomplishment. A historical marker was erected in 1993 on Main Street in Dobson in her honor. The Greensboro Patriot was an early advocate for women’s rights and championed Tabitha’s cause. The Patriot reported, “She had to run the gauntlet of prejudice, the unreasonable obstinate prejudices that confront woman in every effort she makes in the battle of life when she dares to step out of the narrow rut that custom, dictated by the masculine lords, assigns her.” “Blast the prejudice that puts women down as only fit to be men’s slaves or playthings! … (Men) sneer at the woman who has the courage to enter the lists and cope with men in the intellectual arena, and an ass in pants who hasn’t got half the brains she has, will mock her commendable inspirations and denounce her ‘presumption.’”

continued from front Philippines, and other allies to which the U.S. has specific treaty responsibilities for defense. In his book, Allison carefully explained that war between the U.S. and China was not inevitable. He and his colleagues mapped out 16 other occasions in history when a rising power confronted an established one. In most cases the situation led to war, but in four cases war was averted, including the post-World War II Cold War Soviet

challenge to the U.S. Now that Chinese authorities recognize and cite the Thucydides Trap’s application to the ChineseU.S. confrontation, does Allison think that war can be avoided? In a speech last month at Utah Valley University Allison said, “Nature and technology have condemned us to coexist since the only alternative is to co-destruct.” Allison explained that because the existence of

nuclear weapons would bring catastrophic consequences for both countries in the case of war, neither country would logically choose to enter war except in the case of an unintended trigger, or “black swan” event. Allison also pointed out one compelling reason for the two countries to work together. Both are responsible for significant emission rates of greenhouse gases that could lead to an environment in which nei-

ther country could survive. Unless the U.S. and China find ways to work together to constrain emissions. it could be an environmental catastrophe rather than a Thucydides Trap that victimizes them.

Spring mix greens herald a new season By ANGELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA Years ago, when bags and bins of spring mix lettuce greens first appeared in the grocery stores in early March, I must admit, I was skeptical. To me, spring mix looked like small leaves of multicolored lettuce mixed with lawn clippings. The variety of colors and flavors, textures and varieties were radically different from my traditional (and quite frankly boring) salad consisting of iceberg and romaine leaves, and maybe a tomato or two. After trying spring mix, I’ve become a fan of the interesting combination of flavors and textures. Now one of my favorite spring pastimes is visiting my local farmers market and looking at all the varieties of lettuce greens at their colorful best. spring mix, also known as “mesclun,” is a name used for a salad mixture of leaves of various species. The name comes from the Spanish word “mezclar,” which translates as “to mix.” Traditional mesclun usually consisted of chervil, arugula, lettuce and endive. Now, spring mix is typically made up of 16 fresh greens and lettuces of varying tastes and textures, including red romaine, baby spinach, radicchio, green romaine, red oak leaf, mizuna, red leaf, lollo rosso, arugula, red mustard, green mustard, red chard, frisee and tatsoi. About half of the greens and lettuces are sweet and mild, while others provide a complementary, slightly bitter edge. Spring mix is available year-round with a peak season in spring and summer. These delicate greens contain a punch of flavor and are packed with vitamins A, C and E, calcium and potassium. Here’s an overview of the many types of spring mix lettuce greens. Arugula or Rocket — Typically has long, spiked, dark green leaves and a strong, peppery flavor, especially when the leaves are larger and wild-harvested. Cultivated

arugula varies in intensity of flavor, so taste before using. Arugula adds a bold punch to salads or an intense note as an ingredient in hearty dishes. Little Gem lettuce — A mixture of soft leaves with a slight crunch, similar to butter lettuce in texture. Mesclun — A combination of tender, wild-harvested or cultivated young greens. Most mesclun varieties include greens with texture and peppery flavor such as curly endive, mezzaluna, mustard leaves, watercress, arugula, purslane, cress, Asian greens like mizuna, red kale and chicory, and a few herbs such as cilantro, basil or parsley. Mache, Corn Salad or Lamb’s Lettuce — Grows in a tight bunch of 4 or 5 leaves attached to a root. It has more flavor and texture than most salad greens, but requires more care when cleaning because grit and dirt tend to settle in the rosette-shaped leaves near the roots. Dandelion — Greens are a dark emerald color and are bitter. They add a distinctive flavor component when added raw, but lose some of their sharpness when cooked low and slow. Escarole — Has a subtle bite, hearty texture and a longer growing season. During the spring months, escarole is sweeter and at its tender best. Add it raw to provide complexity to a salad or as an interesting addition to cooked dishes in place of spinach. Pea Greens — These are the giant, tangled vines on which peas grow. Pea greens are typically available at farmers markets in spring and early summers. Break out the salad bowl and try a variety of spring mix lettuce greens in nontraditional ways. This recipe showcases spring mix salad topped with crunchy cucumber slices, seeds or nuts, tart cherries, creamy goat

CONtINUeD FrOM FrONt sign says,” he said, noting that there are exceptions, like the use of profanity. Board members had few comments. The vote to approve the changes as presented was not unanimous. Board member Dennis Sholl was opposed. Board members Eddie Oakley and Steve Monroe were unable to attend. Johnson will ask Town Attorney Beth Koonce to review the document. Jamestown has until July 1 of this year to comply. The Planning Board first learned about 160D at its Nov. 9 meeting, during discussion regarding Diamondback Investment Group’s rezoning request for Castleton

Village on the Johnson Property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. Johnson said in a phone interview at that time that bringing up 160D while the Castleton Village issue is before the Planning Board would be confusing. He added that there would not be “substantive changes” to the laws that would affect the proposed development. Later that month, the Planning Board denied the rezoning and the Town Council did the same in February. In other business, Sarah Glanville was re-elected chair of the Planning Board, with Ed Stafford re-elected vice chair. Both votes were unanimous.
