It appears Diamondback Investment Group is listening to the people who disliked the company’s original plan for the 467acre Johnson farm property. After announcing planned changes on March 4, new plans were unveiled March 16. The total number of units has been reduced from 1,612 to 1,403. Many residents of the areas surrounding the Guilford College and Mackay roads farm – including the Cedarwood and Jordan Creek neighborhoods – objected to the number of apartments (312) as well as commercial area in the original plans of Castleton Village unveiled Feb. 13. Zach Tran, one of the principals of Diamondback, sent a letter to “neighbors of the Johnson Farm” on March 18. In it, he listed eight

concerns his company had heard regarding the development and how the new plan reflects these concerns. “We have eliminated the large commercial area across from the Cedarwood neighborhood,” Tran said. “This has been replaced by a senior living community and a 24-acre park area. “The only commercial development included in this plan will be small store and office fronts located on an interior road, with residential condos located above. This is intended to maintain a small-town feel.” He added that the swimming pool originally located across from Jordan Creek has been moved to the interior of the property. A small tract beside Jordan Creek on the corner of Mackay and Guilford College, across from the large farm area, is now townSEE dESIgN, PAGe 2

Vietnam Veterans Day

The Rachel Caldwell Chapter, DAR and the Jamestown Veterans committee had to cancel this year’s 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War flag raising ceremony due to the Coronavirus. It was scheduled for March 29th at Wren Miller Park in Jamestown. The governor and the mayors of both Jamestown and

Greensboro made proclamations for Vietnam Veterans Day. Gerald Peek and members of the Jamestown Veterans Committee will raise the flag early on Sunday morning on March 29th, so the flag will still fly all day. The first Vietnam Veterans Day was held on March 29, 1974. President Richard Nixon chose March 29th as

an appropriate date for the occasion as that was the day the last troops left Vietnam the year before. Anyone interested in learning more about this 15- year celebration and to become a commemorative partner with the National US 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commission can do an internet search.

Stepping up to help out By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com To say life as Americans know it has been considerably altered in the past couple of weeks would clearly be an understatement. The effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) have resulted in schools closing, restaurants opening on a takeout basis only, workers being laid off and panicked consumers strip-

ping grocery stores of necessities. But local non-profits and faith organizations are stepping up to provide additional help to those in need. Years ago when Lisa Hawley noticed kids at school wrapping part of their lunch to take home for supper, she began providing food to children, an effort that soon turned into the non-profit Feeding Lisa’s Kids. Today, volunteers meet at Wesley Memorial United Method-

ist Church in High Point on the first Wednesday of each month to box food and deliver it to 170 homes in the community. “We feed over 700 people each month,” said Hawley, owner of the Southern Roots restaurant in Jamestown. “We collect monetary donations and I am able to purchase food through my vendors and get more for the dollar.” SEE HELP, PAGe 5

Fighting virus confinement boredom

“Smart people don’t get bored,” my friend announced when I told her that a lot of people were getting bored from the home-confinement imposed by the ongoing pandemic. “Smart people can find all kinds of things to keep them occupied. Like reading,” she continued. My friend is correct. In my case there are shelves of books I By d.g. martin need to read or read again. One on one Then I thought about you. Just in case you might ask, I have assembled a few recent books about North Carolina history that will entertain, educate, and keep you from being bored while you are staying home during the pandemic. 1. “The Secret Token: Myth, Obsession, and the Search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke” by Andrew Lawler. Every North Carolinian should be familiar with the state’s founding myth, the story of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Lost Colony and the unsolved puzzle of what happened to Virginia Dare, the first child of English parents born in America. But most do not know the details of the colony’s founding, the struggles English colonists faced, and the different ideas about what really happened to Dare and other colonists. In gripping detail, Lawler tells the story and the 430-year search to determine what happened . 2. “A Delicious Country: Rediscovering the Carolinas along the Route of John Lawson’s 1700 Expedition,” by Scott Huler. In 1700, English-born John Lawson was a newcomer to North America. Almost immediately upon arriving, he set out from Charleston to explore the endless forests of backcountry Carolinas. His travel notes became the basis of “A New Voyage to Carolina,” first published in 1709 and still a classic for its rich descriptions of flora and fauna and the conditions of the native peoples. Durham author Huler followed Lawson’s footsteps across the modern-day Carolinas. His book gives a good summary of Lawson’s findings and the challenges faced by today’s people who live along that pathway.

Letter to the Editor Dear People of the Great State of North Carolina, Hello! I am a third-grade student in Northern Virginia. Our class is learning about the United States, and I will be teaching our school about the state of North Car Molina. In the month of May, I will create a display for our State Fair that I hope will make you proud. Although I have gathered facts about your state from books and websites, I think that I can receive the best information from the people who live there. This is why I am writing to you. I am hoping that you would be willing to send me some items to help me learn more about the best things in your state. You might consider sending items such as postcards, pictures, souvenirs, this newspaper article, or any other unique items that would be useful or show your state pride. Here are a few questions: • Why do you live in your state?/What first brought your family there? • How do you make money?/What is your job? • What does your state look like? • What do people do for fun? • What animals live there? • What traditional food/recipes does your state have? • What type of music is native to your state? • Do you have a state athletic team? • What geographic features are unique to your state? I will need to gather all of my information by the first week of May. You can mail items to the address below. I really appreciate your help!

3. “The Tuscarora War: Indians, Settlers, and the Fight for the Carolina Colonies” by David La Vere. John Lawson’s book enticed a group of Europeans to settle near today’s New Bern. Their growing community threatened the Tuscarora Indians and their allies. In 1711, the Tuscaroras attacked the settlers and began a conflict that ended in a battle that devastated the Indians at their stronghold in Neoheroka, near present day Snow Hill in Greene County. 4. “The Lumbee Indians: An American Struggle” by Malinda Maynor Lowery. When North Carolinians read newspaper reports about Lumbee Indians, they wonder who are these people and where did they come from? Lowery answers these questions. As a member of the Lumbee Tribe with deep family roots in the community, she brings more than scholarship to explaining her people’s origins and history. She weaves her family’s experience with the defining events in Lumbee history. The main characters turn out to be a fascinating blend of heroes and scoundrels, preachers and bootleggers, lawyers and lawbreakers, and farmers, all deeply attached to the swampy lands along the Lumber River in Robeson County. 5. “Tar Heel Lightnin’: How Secret Stills and Fast Cars Made North Carolina the Moonshine Capital of the World” by Daniel Pierce. Some of Lowery’s Lumbee family were accomplished bootleggers. Pierce tells the story of many other Tar Heels from every region of the state who made us number one in moonshine production. That story began in colonial times, with farmers using techniques their families had learned in the British Isles to distill their corn and fruit into whisky and brandy. Read just one of these books during your Corona confinement and you will have a richer understanding of our state’s history. Read them all and you will be an expert, and an un-bored one.

Sincerely, Louis Mrs. Robinson’s Class The Langley School 1411 Balls Hill Road McLean, VA 22101

continued from front homes, rather than professional office space. Tran said a tract at the corner of Guilford and Guilford College roads which backs up to the Whittington Hall development is now designated as civic – a change from professional office – and will be donated to Jamestown for “municipal use.” A farmer’s market will be located diagonally across from the civic land. Perhaps the biggest change is the location of the apartments. What once were

312 apartments and mixeduse areas across from the Cedarwood neighborhood are now 208 units moved farther toward Gate City Boulevard along Guilford College Road. In place of the apartments, Diamondback is proposing a senior living community. Another area toward the back of the development has become age-targeted single-family. On the Castleton Village Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ groups/528167477702528,

Tran explained what a senior living community would be. “Senior living would be an independent care provider that is different than the age-targeted area of the site plan,” Tran said. “It would be owned and managed by a company that specifically cares for seniors from independent living through assisted life care. We have been in discussion with several of those providers. The entire tract will be dedicated to this use and I would imagine the operator would

phase their construction as need is required. I am not an expert in the subject matter other than to know they would need a Certificate of Need to provide nursing home care. “Age-targeted would be product and marketing driven to cater to those who are 55+ but would not be deedrestricted so any age could technically move in there. However, that could change if the builders we discussed this property with request the deed restriction.” Other discussion has concerned saving the historic buildings on the property, specifically the old Armstrong house near Guilford Road.

“We are having ongoing discussions with members of the historic preservation community to determine the best future for the Armstrong house,” Tran said. The Johnson family is descended from the Armstrong family who came from Castleton, England. Another area, previously designated as green space, along Guilford College Road, between the back of GTCC and Whittington Hall, has now been designated institutional. But the development hinges on whether Diamondback can get the zoning it needs. “This is a planned unit development, or PUD,”

Tran said. “A PUD zoning designation, which would allow this type of development, is being considered by the Jamestown Town Council. “We would not be able to commit to developing the property the way that is described in this plan, with more than 165 acres of trails, parks and green space included, unless the Town Council approves a PUD zoning designation. Current zoning law would compel us to approach the development in a more piecemeal fashion.” Diamondback is expected to request annexation for the new development. If approved, the population of the Town of Jamestown would nearly double by the time the development is finished. Tran urged those concerned to visit the Castleton Village Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ groups/528167477702528 to register their thoughts. His company is monitoring the site. (The PUD vote by the Town Council was to have been decided on March 17 but the meeting was postponed because of the coronavirus. A new date has not been announced.)

With schools closed and children and many parents now at home, Hawley saw the need for the families served by Feeding Lisa’s Kids to have more food. She organized an emergency food drive on March 21 to provide an extra food delivery to them for the month of March. “But we don’t have the money to continue doing this twice a month,” Hawley acknowledged. “Anyone who would like to help may write a check to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and designate it for Feeding Lisa’s Kids. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of what we receive is used to buy food. There are no other costs because volunteers do everything. “We hope people will continue to donate so we can keep this program going.” Approximately two miles from Hawley’s business, members of Renaissance Road Church on Harvey Road recently created 200 bags of food to help students in need. The church has a food bank from which they distribute food weekly. “We partner with Second Harvest Food Bank in

Winston-Salem, as well as a local grocery store and gas station to help stock our food bank,” Jace Breeback, campus pastor, said. “We have shelving, freezers and refrigerators to handle the food we receive until it is given away.” When church members saw an extra need for students out of school, they wanted to be part of the solution. Their regular food distributions are meant for a week. The smaller food bags are emergency rations that could last one-three days. In addition to making bags of nonperishable food for students, they created 40 similar bags for seniors ages 60 and older. When trying to decide

how best to get the food bags into the hands of those who need them, Breeback learned about Feeding Lisa’s Kids. Renaissance Road partnered with Lisa Hawley and Feeding Lisa’s Kids to distribute most of the food bags at that group’s Saturday emergency food delivery. The bags of food for seniors in need were given out on Friday and Saturday afternoons at Renaissance Road Church. “(The current situation) has thrown so many for a loop,” Breeback said. “We are blessed to have the food bank already established in our church and are just trying to extend the service. “In the future, we will reevaluate where we are and

what needs to be done. We want to see our community come together and do well during this time of need. Food or monetary donations are accepted.” Renaissance Road also has a campus in Lexington that is providing food for students in that area. Donations to Feeding Lisa’s Kids or Renaissance Road Church food bank are appreciated. how effective are Create fake spills for Just essential oils? April Fool’s Day By dONNA ERICKSON DONNA’S DAY: CreAtIVe FAMILY FUN “A mess is the sign of a good time” is one of my mantras in life. That is, as in disorder after a party or craft project. But spills? Not that kind of mess. Grape juice on white carpet, chocolate milk on a child’s party dress, coffee spilled on my lap during a flight. No one likes to accidentally spill or be spilled on. Except on April Fool’s Day! This fun caper of placing “fake” spills around the house, office or school, fools, surprises and, above all, creates spontaneous laughter. We all know, you can’t have too much of that in your life! Fool friends and family into thinking that ketchup really spilled on the kitchen floor, or that fingernail polish is dripping down the side of an upholstered chair. The ingredients are basic for this clean “messy” prank: household glue, acrylic paint and props appropriate to enhance the spill. Here’s how: 1. Choose an empty container, cup or jar as the prop for your spill. For example, an empty juice box, a coffee mug or a mustard jar works well. Wash it thoroughly. 2. In a small paper cup, stir food coloring (for translucent spills) or acrylic paint (for opaque spills) into 1/2 cup of white household glue. Or, if you have a wide-

mouth prop, combine directly in it. When adding the paint or food coloring, try to imitate the color of the product that was previously in the container. Mix colors to get an authentic effect. 3. Place plastic wrap or parchment paper on a flat surface. Set the prop you have chosen on its side on plastic wrap or parchment paper. Carefully pour the glue mixture onto the plastic wrap or paper next to the spout or edge of the prop in such a way that it simulates a real spill. If you stirred the glue mixture in the prop, slowly pour it out and set the prop on its side next to the spill. Add realistic touches as part of the spill, such as mini marshmallows for a spilled mug of hot chocolate, or a wooden stick for an ice-cream bar. 4. Keep out of reach until completely dry, up to 24-36 hours. Remove the “spill” from the plastic wrap or paper. Check to make sure it is dry underneath. You don’t want a real spill on your hands! Finally, it’s time place your fake spill in the perfect spot to surprise your friends, family, or even a teacher on Wednesday, April 1. there is little evidence to support their use for those purposes. Health claims for aromatherapy should be taken with skepticism. One exception is that several reviews have found that some aromatherapies can reduce anxiety levels, and possibly some symptoms of depression. As I frequently note, however, the placebo effect is powerful, and if you expect that a treatment, such as aromatherapy, will help your symptoms, it very well may. As such, I have no objection to people who want to use them for mild symptoms. I do object when people forgo potentially effective treatment for serious illness. Your point about cost is a real issue, but essential oils do not have to be very expensive. Harm from aromatherapy is generally limited to allergic or non-allergic irritation of the nose and skin. Essential oils are not to be taken internally, and even topical use can lead to problems, as they can be absorbed into the body directly through the skin.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a relative who sells one of the popular brands of essential oil products and related equipment. She sends out many social network postings about the benefits of these products, including sharing postings from others who sell the products. I do not purchase these for several reasons. I am sensitive to many airborne scents and have a scentfree home, but my primary concern is that she seems to be practicing medicine by claiming what I believe to be unproven health benefits. These are very costly and, at a minimum, harm is done by persuading people to spend a great deal of money for products that may not do what they are claimed to do. I am also concerned that families with young children seem to be using these products — my relative has even sent some to her children’s school for use in the classroom. Can you please comment on possible benefits/harm from these products? — DEAR DR. ROACH: J.R. Why are there two names for every drug? In a recent DEAR J.R.: Essential article, for example, you oils from plants have been mention fluoxetine (Proused to scent the air for mil- zac) and bupropion (Welllennia. There are certainly butrin). Clearly the name in many claims about pur- parenthesis is the common ported health benefits, but name people use. Why does

the other name exist, and why is it used at all? This adds unnecessary complexity and confusion. For example, a nurse asked me about Efudex, and I didn’t know what she was referring to, as the label on the medication I had reads “fluorouracil.” — C.P.

DEAR C.P.: Every drug has at least three names: a chemical name, a generic name and a brand name. The chemical names are so complex that nobody (but chemists) uses them. I prefer using generic names, since they are the same regardless of country, and generic names often give a clue to the type of medication. Generic names are lowercase. Brand names (capitalized) are the ones most often known (drug companies often try to find easyto-remember brand names and hard-to-remember generic names), but not always. In the example you gave, Efudex is one brand name (Adrucil and Carac are others), and fluorouracil (or 5-fluorouracil, often abbreviated 5-FU) is the generic name.
