Gardening project predicted to grow In the spring of 2020, Haynes-Inman Education Center received a grant from the North Carolina Farm Bureau, which, in a matter of speech, is already bearing fruit. The “Going Local Grant” has actually been used to create a vegetable garden outside the vocational education classroom. “There was already a raised bed located there,” said Daniese Smith, the part-time office staff member who applied for the grant. “We just had to clean it out so it could be used for our garden.” Lea Shore, teacher assistant to Christi Collins, has been responsible for most of the work on the garden, which currently is bearing

lettuce and carrots. “Due to the pandemic, the students have not been able to work in the garden,” Smith said. “But we hope by the time for spring planting, we will be able to take them outside. Lea and I have made photos and videos of the garden to keep the students interested in the project.” Smith once worked for the Farm Bureau and was on the committee that chose grant recipients. Grants can be used for anything agricultural and the project should have sustainability. Besides explaining the intended project, applicants have to list items needed to do it and what each cost. “That is how the amount of the grant is determined,” Smith explained. “We received over $400.” For the Haynes-Inman

comp Plan committee resumes meetings By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee met via Zoom on Feb. 22 and looked at a draft of an updated vision statement as well as their planning schedule for the upcoming year. The group last met in October. A vision statement conveys the Town’s hopes for the future. It is intended as a guide to help the Town make decisions that align with its declared set of values and governing principles. It can be thought of as a roadmap to where the Town wants to be within a certain timeframe. The statement sets the foundation and provides direction for the Comprehensive Plan. It will form a basis for the goals and objectives, as well as more detailed topics that will be

developed later in the process. The draft vision statement, submitted by Vagn Hansen of Benchmark Consulting, is only 39 words shorter than the one adopted in 2016, even though Hansen advised to shorten the former one. It conveys the continuance of small town charm experience coupled with eventual growth. Most steering committee members thought it was a good statement. The committee plans two meetings in March to review the group’s guiding principles and to review objectives of a comprehensive plan. In-person meetings are planned for April and public workshops with limited attendance in late April or early May. These workshops would be held over two days with four sessions per day. To allow for social distancing, these will be held in the Civic Center.

Planning Board to look at development ordinance By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com After five months of deliberation on the rezoning request for the Johnson Property by Diamondback Investment Group, then a three-month break, the Jamestown Planning Board will meet March 8 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center. There will be a public hearing regarding several amendments to the Land Development Ordinance. “The majority of the updates relate to the requirement that the Town complies with the new N.C. General Statutes Chapter 160D laws,” said Assistant Town Manager/Planning Director Matthew Johnson. “Chapter 160D consolidates current city- and countyenabling statutes for devel-

opment regulations which were previously housed in Chapter 153A and 160A into a new single, unified chapter. “The new chapter does not include a lot of substantive changes, rather it provides clarifying amendments and consensus reforms for local governments. Our most important changes to the ordinance generally include the changing of references throughout the document to reference the current statutes.” Nearly every page of the 576-page Land Development Ordinance has some kind of change. Many of these are minor corrections, including typographical and formatting errors. “Other changes to the ordinance include some SEE PLANNINg, PAGe 2

vegetable garden, the grant money extended beyond the purchase of soil and seed. It also was used to buy gardening equipment the students could handle. “We hope to start the garden project with our high school students and later expand to other classrooms,” Smith said. The local Guilford County Farm Bureau has been instrumental in supporting the school’s vegetable garden project made possible by the grant.

ABOUT THE NORTH CAROLINA FARM BUREAU North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation was formed in 1936 as a non-profit general farm organization to serve farmers and provide a unified voice for the interests and needs of the farming community. Today, it serves as an advocate for members at the local, state, national and international levels. Over the years, North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation has grown into the largest general farm organization in the state with more than 500,000 member families. But it continues to maintain its grassroots heritage and mission to advocate for farm and rural families.

Delta Kappa Gamma promotes leadership and service By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com In honor of Dr. Seuss Day, several members of the Beta Xi and Chi chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma Society Region VII met March 2 at the Truist Point Stadium in downtown High Point to deliver books their chapters had collected for L.E.A.P. Literacy Empowers All People is a non-profit that provides school dropout intervention through literacy programs and educational resources, with focus on children from the cradle to college living in poverty. This was the latest project in the DKG chapters’ ongoing effort to promote education and help children. In addition to the book collection, among the many past and continuing projects for the Chi chapter is presenting an Alice Armfield Grantin-aid scholarship to a rising senior education major at High Point University (Armfield retired as principal from Millis Road Elementary School), providing donations and supplies to Carpenter House and volunteering in classrooms. “We also give gift certificates to members who are still teaching in a classroom to use as needed,” said Mary Ann Hart, president of the Chi chapter. “Some of us adopt teachers and continue to support them throughout the year. “This year we presented new teachers at Southwest Elementary and Middle schools $20 gift certificates.” The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, which started in Texas in 1929, is an international organization that

encourages the leadership and service of former and current women educators. It is now found in every state and nine countries worldwide. “We are not a one-size-fits-all organization,” said Becky Sadowski, DKG international president, in a recent group newsletter. “Society members have different needs and interests. We are leaders with various strengths and passions, and we value the opportunity to share these as active participants who strive to make an impact in our communities and in the world.” North Carolina was the seventh state to join DKG in 1934 and the local Chi chapter was organized in 1950 with 28 founding members. The growing Chi chapter later multiplied into additional chapters Beta Xi and Beta Omicron. “I have appreciated my DKG membership,” said Sylvia Eaglin, who joined the Chi chapter in 1993. “The group is an open field for learning. Being part of it has put me into leadership roles with the local chapter and beyond. I created

a monthly online newsletter for the state DKG and have attended national events and met wonderful people from around the world. “I have learned that women work so well together. No one worries about who gets the credit, we just want to do our best.” “I have never had more support in anything I’ve done,” Hart added. “There is so much excitement in this organization. Teachers are special people and a group of them all together is amazing.” Eaglin noted proudly that every member at some point has served as an officer, so each knows what is needed to help. Since the group started, no one has repeated the office for president. Hart, who has been a member for three years, is the 36th. The Chi chapter currently includes members from High Point, Thomasville, southern Guilford County and northeast Davidson County. In the past, the organization has SEE dELTA, PAGe 2

high Point twice delays vote on Bypass assessment By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The City of High Point held a public hearing on Feb. 23 to present a proposal regarding what the City could do with its portion of the Jamestown Bypass. The plan was present to the Planning and Zoning Commission who had few questions. The Commission then voted to continue discus-

sion until a Feb. 25 meeting. At that time, there was no discussion and the matter was postponed until March 23 to give commissioners additional time to review. Only Areas 7 and 8 of High Point’s Land Use Assessment, an area of approximately 132 acres along Dillon and Bales Chapel roads, would affect properties near Jamestown. These areas are in the High Point Extraterritorial Juris-

diction and abut the Jamestown town limits. Several residents along Bales Chapel Road are opposed to High Point’s proposed zoning change from low-density residential to medium-density for these areas. Since the January meeting, proposed plans for 82 acres of Area 8 – closest to the Jamestown town limits – have been modified, with medium-density residential cut approximately

held meetings in homes, schools and churches, but most often conducted dinner meetings in the evenings to accommodate more members. During shutdowns from the pandemic, its 43 members and three honorary members have held online meetings to keep members informed and active. The February meeting was a joint session with Beta Xi, Beta Omicron and Beta Delta chapters and featured guest speaker Catherine Truitt, the newly elected superintendent of North Carolina Department of Public

Instruction. Truitt spoke of her goal to have highly qualified teachers in every classroom by recruiting and retaining, improved literacy through principal and teacher re-training in phonics, and revising the testing and accountability model with the use of smaller, more frequent tests rather than a big end-of-the-year one. continued from front ing units per acre and 35 percent built-upon area,” said Heidi Galanti, planning administrator for the City of High Point. “Due to these constraints, the area was modified. Area 8 was reduced to approximately 44 acres and 18 parcels. It is now solely in the Oakdale Reservoir General Watershed which allows 75 percent builtupon area.” The modification removes property of the Small family and Marie Poteat, the largest landowners in the area, from the plan. Both Karen Small and Poteat have been vocal in their denunciation of the Area 8 plan. Area 8 is bordered on the north by the bypass, west by Dillon Road, south by Bales Chapel Road and originally on the east by the High Point/Jamestown Annexation Agreement line. These residents are concerned by possible annexation by High Point, but

since there are no water or sewer connections in these two areas, there would not be annexation until a developer requested it. Annexation would be required for residents to receive these connections. Another item of consideration by the High Point Planning and Zoning Commission is the need to rename some streets along the bypass as well as naming the bypass itself. Since Jamestown began the process by designating the area from Guilford College to Vickrey Chapel roads as Jamestown Parkway, High Point will consider using that name as well. All road name changes will be taken up in a separate meeting. The Jamestown Bypass is a roadway project that has been in transportation plans for more than 30 years. Currently under construction, it is proposed to open in 2022. The purpose of the new roadway is to enhance connectivity from High Point to

Greensboro by connecting I-74 and I-73. The project will be a multi-lane divided road with a median and mostly controlled access. The section of the new roadway that is within High Point’s planning area is approximately 2 miles long. Because this road is on a new alignment, new areas will be opened for potential development and redevelopment. The City of High Point has conducted a land use assessment of a 1.4 square mile area along the Greensboro Road and Jamestown Bypass corridors from Montlieu Avenue in High Point to the Jamestown town limits at the Deep River. The “Jamestown Land Use Assessment Document” issued by the City of High Point is available at www.highpointnc.gov/ landuseassessments. planning continued from front minor revisions to the sign ordinance to make us compliant with federal laws based on content neutrality, removing antiquated portions of the ordinance based on changes to state laws, and clarifying language to coincide with Town operations,” Johnson said. Johnson added that the Johnson farm/ Diamondback Investment Group discussions did not factor into any of the changes. “It has been a large undertaking, but we did have quite a bit of assistance from Benchmark [Planning], which we are certainly grateful for,” he said. Benchmark is working with the town to update the Comprehensive Plan. The Land Development Ordinance was originally adopted in 2009. It has been

amended several times since then, the latest being June of 2020. Due to Covid-19, restrictions on public entry to Town Hall will be observed. Public entry will be limited to one person at a time for public hearings and/or public comment. Anyone wishing to speak should contact the Town Clerk at 336454-1138 before noon on March 8 to have your name placed on the list of speakers. Speakers will be requested to line up outside of the Civic Center prior to the start of the meeting. Anyone entering Town Hall must agree to have their temperature taken by a contactless thermometer and are encouraged to wear a face covering. The meeting will be broadcast live on the Town’s YouTube channel at www. youtube.com/townofjamestownnc.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst By ANgELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA I live in Texas, in an area that has been hit recently with a massive power-grid failure, freezing temperatures, icy roads, frozen pipes, water pressure woes and boil water notices for the past several days. To say that our state was unprepared for this weather disaster is an understatement. Whether you live in an area that has been hit with pandemic quarantines and lockdowns, work and school closures, bad weather, power outages, frozen pipes and water cutoffs, or you just need to stock your pantry for the times when you’re unable to shop, here are some ways to create an emergency pantry using canned goods as staples. A typical emergency pantry: * Dried and/or evaporated milk * Pasta, rice, cereals, crackers, bread (can be frozen for months) * Jars of processed cheese spread * Granola bars, Pop Tarts * Canned fruits and vegetables * Canned meats & fish (chicken, ham, tuna) * Canned fruit, vegetable juices * Peanut butter * Canned bean, potato salad * Unsalted nuts * Canned baked beans, chili, hash, spaghetti, soup * Dried fruits * Instant beverages * Baby food and formula (if needed) * Bottled water Additional supplies: * Non-electric can opener * Paper towels, foil * Medications (prescription and nonprescription) that family uses on a regular basis * Paper goods (toilet paper and tissues), napkins, plates, bowls, cups

* Plastic cutlery * Bar soap and rinse-free body wash (if sanitizers or liquid soaps are unavailable) * Food and water for pets * Catering sterno cans, matches and aluminum chafer pan sets (disposable party buffet serving sets can be used for cooking and re-heating food safely) Tips for creating and stocking an emergency pantry: — Choose foods your family enjoys. Good options include low-sodium canned beans, vegetables, fruit (packed in juice), breakfast cereal, peanut butter, pouches of fully cooked whole grains and pastas, nuts, whole-wheat crackers and shelf-stable milk or plant milk (sold in aseptic boxes in the grocery aisle). — When buying canned foods, choose low-sodium or no-salt-added products, and choose fruits packed in their own juice or water instead of syrup. — Store canned goods in a cool, dark, dry area away from furnaces, pipes and other places where temperature changes occur. Store metal cans off the floor because moisture may lead to rust. — Always use the FIFO (first-in, firstout) method when it comes to using foods from storage so that you’re sure to use your oldest cans first. If you see a can or jar with a broken seal or is rusting, bulging or denting, it should be discarded. If any food does not look or smell right, throw it out. — Keep at least 6 gallons of water per family member to be prepared for one week. Store water in airtight, food-grade storage containers. Replace water every six months. Here are a few recipes using ingredients that should be in every emergency pantry — grains and beans! They are versatile, nutrient-dense, packed with protein and very filling. These No-Cook Emergency Pantry Recipes courtesy of Trisha Calvo, a
