Liveable communities needed for seniors As it is everywhere, Jamestown residents are getting older but staying healthier and are more active longer. With this in mind, communities must adapt to serve their citizens.

In 2019, Sherrie Richmond and Councilmember Rebecca Rayborn attended a meeting and learned how municipalities could create age-friendly communities. In February 2020, an AARP representative addressed the Jamestown Town Council and in October of that year, the Council voted to become a part of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Commu-

nities, a worldwide network of communities committed to giving older residents the chance to live rewarding, productive and safe lives. Jamestown is the first community in the immediate area to participate and state and federal funding is available for programs.

Planning includes community revitalization and economic development that recognize the needs of all people regardless of age, income, physical ability, race, and other factors. Community decisions on land use, housing and transportation must be taken into consideration. Focus areas are outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, work and civic engage-

By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The City of High Point Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted 9-0 on March 25 to approve the Jamestown Bypass Land Use proposal.

The review of the document has been a long process, beginning in January.

The Commission had a few questions on the proposal regarding what the City could do with its portion of the Jamestown Bypass at its meeting on Feb. 23. It voted to continue discussion until a Feb. 25 meeting. At that time, there was no discussion and the matter was postponed until March 23 to give commissioners additional time to review. There was no discussion on that date and the vote was moved to March 25 to allow further public comment.

Now that the Planning and Zoning Commission has approved the plan, the High Point City Council will hold a public hearing on the matter May 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Only Areas 7 and 8 of High Point’s Land Use

Assessment, an area of approximately 132 acres along Dillon and Bales Chapel roads, would affect properties near Jamestown.

These areas are in the High Point Extraterritorial Jurisdiction and abut the Jamestown town limits.

Since the January meeting, proposed plans for 82 acres of Area 8 – closest to the Jamestown town limits – were modified, with medium-density residential cut approximately in half and eliminating just over half of the proposed development along Bales Chapel Road. It no longer abuts Jamestown town limits.

The deleted portion was in the Oakdale Reservoir Watershed Critical Area Tier 3 area. This area includes protection of fragile natural watershed areas. “[This] limited development to two dwelling units per acre and 35 percent built-upon area,” said Heidi Galanti, planning administrator for the City of High Point. “Due to these constraints, the area was modified. Golf course revenue continues to rise

By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Covid-19 doesn’t stop avid golfers, especially in good weather. Revenues for Jamestown Park Golf Course were up 37 percent in February over the prior year. Year-to-date revenues are up by approximately 25 percent.

Rounds played in February were up 49 percent from the previous year – even with more bad weather days – with 300 more rounds played this year.

Year-to-date, rounds were up 24 percent.

Golf maintenance expenses matched the previous year and year-to-date expenses are up by just over 5 percent.

Increased play also meant an increase in other areas of the golf course.

Greens fees were up 40 percent, cart rentals up 53 percent and pull carts up 87.5 percent. Sales of golf shop inventory rose 172.5 percent. Only the driving range saw a decrease, this time of slightly less than 10 percent.

Gerken noted that age-friendly means housing, public safety, and

“By 2035, the number of adults older than 65 will be greater than the number of children under 18,” Gerken said of the need.

The life expectancy in the United States in 1950 was 68 years. The current life expectancy for U.S. in 2021 is 78.99 years, according to MacroTrends. Projections indicate live expectancy will be nearly 89 years in 2102.

“Where do you want to spend as many days as you have?” Gerken asked.

Community involvement is important. People need to be with other people and not be social-

ly isolated. Of course, Covid-19 changed this for most of us. An age-friendly community can aid in socialization.

Jamestown’s committee immediately went to work, dividing into subcommittees to research what is available to the community. At the second meeting on March 23, committee members reported.

Laura Gulledge looked at Senior Resources of Guilford and their community programming. The organization offers a wide range of federal, state and locally funded programs that assist senior adults in maintaining their independence and continuing their involvement in community activities. Christian service and travel draws Berry to The World Race

The time is typically used to deepen one’s practical, professional and personal awareness.

But Claire Berry, who will graduate soon from Liberty University with a major in sales management and professional selling, has decided now is a good time to invest in a year of personal growth before starting her career. She has been accepted to take part in The World Race, a mission trip that allows participants to experience a deeper life with Jesus while sharing his love and serving others.

“I am not ready for a 9-5 job,” Berry said. “Friends recommended The World Race and after researching it, I felt it was what I wanted to do.

“It was everything I was looking for – a Christian organization that included travel with a small group.

The World Race also handles all necessary arrangements, assuring safety as we travel. It has been doing this for a long time.”

Berry’s only responsibilities will include getting the proper vaccines and camping gear, which includes a tent, sleeping bag and backpack for her personal belongings.

“I have never been camping,” Berry said. “During the trip we may

have to sleep in a tent or in some facility. We just have to be prepared.”

Berry’s particular “race” will begin in August 2021 and take her to 11 countries in Africa, Asia and South America during an 11-month period.

“I have a travel bug,” Berry admitted. “This gives me the opportunity to mix travel and my Christian beliefs.”

Tom Tervo spoke about the Town’s proposed Parks and Recreation Master Plan. One version of the plans calls for removal of the ballfields, replacing them with walking paths, which he believes seniors would use.

One item Tervo believes needs to be added is a Senior Resource Center. Other committee members agreed, noting the Griffin Recreation Center in Greensboro and Culler Senior Center in High Point are where Jamestown residents go.

Add roasted vegetables to spring meal planning

Spring onions flavor the season

By dONNA ERICKSON DONNA'S DAY: CreAtIVe FAMILY FUN As a kid growing up in California, most of the vegetables I ate, with the exception of steamed artichokes and corn on the cob in the summer, came from a can. Mom was a good cook, but even she would later admit, there wasn’t a lot of veggie appeal on our plates.

During college years, stir-fried vegetables were the rage. I bought a wok, took a class on basic Chinese cooking techniques and discovered a new world of tastes. Served over brown rice, topped with cashews or sesame seeds, I prepared plates of deliciousness in no time flat.

While stir-fried meals are still part of our family menus, we love ovenroasted vegetables to balance out a meal. Easy to prepare on a sheet pan, and appetizing to look at in an array of colors, the mostly root vegetables cook up crisp on the outside and tender in the middle, often with a sweet intense flavor. Here’s my basic recipe that serves 6-8: ROASTED VEGETABLES 1 medium sweet potato, peeled 2 carrots, peeled 1 pound Brussels sprouts, halved lengthwise 1 red onion, cut into wedges 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, rosemary or thyme (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Cut sweet potato and carrots into 1-inch chunks. Place in a large bowl with Brussels sprouts and onions.

Add oil, salt and pepper, toss well, then place mixture in a single layer on prepared pan.

3. Roast 20-25 minutes or until all vegetables are tender, turning once with a spatula.

Serve sprinkled with fresh herbs and an extra drizzle of oil if you wish, or experiment with maple syrup or pomegranate molasses for a dash of sweetness.

VARIATIONS Roast a pan of cherry tomatoes to amp up the flavor of a pasta salad.

Need More Space?

Preheat oven to 375 F. Slice cherry tomatoes in half and toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil, two minced fresh garlic cloves, and salt and pepper on a parchment lined rimmed baking sheet. Bake 15-20 minutes.

Cool. Lightly toss into your prepared pasta salad, top with fresh herbs and grated Parmesan.

Most chilled leftovers keep their crunch. Dip in hummus or yogurtbased dressing for a snack. Or, reheat and complement a bowl of greens and delicious grains like quinoa, bulgur and other wonder foods at lunchtime.

There’s nothing like the intense flavor (or the smell) of an onion. Wild onions were among the first foods that mankind gathered and ate and are one of the first signs of spring. Onions are in the allium family, along with garlic and shallots. Spring onions are one of my favorite varieties. Spring onions are also called green onions, young onions, pencil onion and scallions.

Scallions aren’t as fully ripened as a green onion and should not have a bulb. Spring onions are the milder, first stage of a mature onion. If left in the ground to grow, they’ll form into an onion bulb.

Larger, older, spring onions may have limp or faded stalks and a stronger flavor than the smaller ones.

Spring onions should be small and thin, with a firm base at the root tip and crisp, bright green leaves. Select spring onions that are not fully developed with a white bulb end and long green stalks. The flavor of the leaves is milder than the root end. Spring onions will keep for five to seven days when wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator.

Spring onions are a great source of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and fiber. They also contain a substance that prevents the formation of blood clots.

Eating onions also helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

To prepare spring onions, cut off the roots and peel away the outer layer to remove any lingering dirt.

Next, rinse the leaves, spreading them gently with your fingers to get at the dirt in the crevices. Both parts are edible. Although the white bulb is most often listed as part of recipes, the green leaves should also be incorporated in the recipes and as a garnish.

You also can use the leaves to add a wonderful burst of green color, to tie up appetizers into a package or to use as a frilly, edible garnish. To curl the ends, cut off the roots and all but about 3 inches of the green tops. Slice the tops lengthwise down from the green end into the white section. Put the leaves in cold water and chill for several hours to curl them.

While spring onions are best served raw, they’re also delicious grilled or sauteed. Spring onions should be added during the final stages of a recipe for maximum flavor.

This Spring Onion Pesto is the perfect way to flavor couscous or orzo pasta, to tuck under the skin of chicken, or to place on fish or pork before grilling or baking.

SPRING ONION PESTO 6 green onions, root ends removed, white bulbs and tops chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled 2 tablespoons lemon zest 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 cup olive oil Using a food processor or a blender, finely grind the spring onions, garlic and lemon zest. Add the lemon juice, salt and pepper. Slowly drizzle in olive oil until everything is well-combined and creamy. Make up to 24 hours before using. Place the pesto in an air-tight container and refrigerate.
