Educators adjust to a new style of teaching School closings have forced teachers to create new paths of learning for their students by using technology. Guilford County Schools provided devices to students without them and made sure they had Internet service, and teachers are connecting to their students with the help of a program called Canvas. They report to principals the results of their classes. During the first week of online school Jamestown Elementary School experienced a high rate of participation with over 400 of their 444 students logging in to online learning. Teachers have done virtual walk-throughs to tell parents and students how to handle the computer assignments and called those who have not logged in. “Teachers provide a flexible schedule of must do, should do and can do assignments,” JES Principal Dwayne Jordan explained. “We don’t want students to be

overwhelmed with the resources we are providing but we are trying to maximize their learning growth while we are physically closed.” Some teachers at all grade levels use live conferencing, which allows them to conduct videos and chats with students and parents. They can read aloud to students, have activities with them and question and answer sessions. “The technology makes it easier,” Jordan said. “But it is not like having personal interaction with the students. “Our teachers are in good spirits. This is probably hardest on parents.” Trent Vernon, principal at Jamestown Middle School, estimated that 50-60 percent of students logged onto classes the first week. “We are recommending a schedule the students can use to help them stay focused,” he said. We find that students log on at various times from early morning to later in the evening. The majority of teachers are putting the work together for their students, so it

looks as much like the regular classroom as possible. Some teachers have been tutoring with the conferencing feature.” For now teachers are focused on getting the kids online and doing their assignments. They realize when students return to school they will be at different levels in their academic growth. At the beginning of next year, there will be a need to fill in the gaps. “We have never done anything like this and are doing the best we can to move the students forward,” Vernon said. “Teachers are learning so much about online instruction. I think some good will come of this if we just get past the bad. “We want our kids and families to know we are working hard for them. We are in education because we love children. We miss the kids and look forward to having them back.” According to James Gibson, principal of Ragsdale High School, even those familiar with technology have experienced a learning curve when using it to teach. Access to technology for the stu-

The school checked out nearly 200 laptops to students who had no device. “In some of those homes there may be three or four school age children, so access is still an issue,” Gibson said. Although hesitant to estimate daily participation, Gibson feels that 50-95 percent of students log

Town continues operations: pedestrian bridge in place By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com It’s impossible to shut down the operations of a town during a pandemic. Office work has to be done and telephones answered along with other work that can be done in ways other than face-to-face. The doors to the Jamestown Town Hall are locked but the staff is still working away inside. “We have altered operations somewhat,” said Matthew Johnson, assistant manager and planning director. The Jamestown Town Council will get back to business by live-streaming the April 21 meeting on the town’s YouTube channel. An agenda was not available at press time. “We had a boatload of phone calls this week,” said Sharen Apple, accounting manager/HR for the Town. But some town workers

still have to get out. “Our crews are working hard to ensure that citizens continue to receive essential services such as garbage and brush collection,” reads the Town’s Facebook page. “Please do not approach employees in the field as they are working to maintain social distancing as best they can. The Town operates with a very small number of staff members, so it is imperative that they remain healthy. Even losing one staff member to illness could result in the loss of services to citizens. “Also, volumes of garbage and brush have increased substantially and we are working hard to provide the same level of service to which our citizens are accustomed. However, please be patient as we are working to comply with social distanc-

Jamestown Park Golf Course closed a couple of weeks ago – although many

other courses remained open – and now the entire park is closed, including the grill at the clubhouse. “It was a collective decision [of staff] to close the golf course,” Johnson said. “Our responsibility is to protect employees and the public. A large number of people were coming out and congregating. “This is in the interest of public safety.”

One project that did not shut down was work on the pedestrian bridge on East Fork Road over the City Lake. In fact, the new bridge was put into place by cranes on April 8. Without the deck, the bridge weighs approximately 11,000 lbs. “It lined up dead on,” said Chris Spainhour, project manager for North State Environmental. “It couldn’t have gone better.” “We are very pleased with their efforts,” said Jamestown Public Services Director Paul Blanchard, The bridge arrived in Jamestown in pieces, which were placed on the vehicle bridge for assembly. Moving the bridge into place took less than 15 minutes. There is still work to be done, including installation of a concrete deck. A guardrail will be installed on the Jamestown side of the bridge along with continuation of the new concrete sidewalk along East Fork Road.

On the golf course side, the Greenway crossing will be re-aligned and curb and gutter added. Parking has always been illegal in that area and now will be impossible with the installation of a guardrail. Both Johnson and Blanchard believe the project is ahead of schedule but declined to say how much ahead. The approximately $1.8 million bridge project is funded by grants received by the Town of Jamestown and any money paid out by the Town will be 100 percent reimbursed. Anthony Thomas of Taurus Studios shot drone videos of the construction and bridge installation. teaching continued from front ents working from home.” Some assignments are things normally done in class while others must be handled more creatively. Gibson noted it is a challenge to have a discussion and hear the viewpoints of others, but people are making the best of it. “I think GCS has done an incredible job of trying to keep people engaged and connected during these challenging times,” he said. “There wasn’t a blueprint for this and people had to plan and adjust on the fly. “Our biggest priority right now is to reach out to students both from academic and social-emotional standpoints, and to reach students we have not heard from. It has been a constant battle to keep it all in perspective. We want to provide the best possible education under the circumstances but with the understanding that there are some challenges that will be very difficult to overcome. “People’s lives have been completely disrupted so we have to understand how education fits into it all.” Acknowledging that school closings have affected every student, Gibson especially sympathizes with seniors who have had what is often their best year put on hold. With so many things postponed or cancelled, this rite of passage of the senior year has been drastically altered. “We hope to do some things in the future to recognize these students and hopefully have a little fun as

well, but we are just waiting to see what happens now,” he said. How students at all levels move forward with grading and accountability is being reviewed at the district and state levels. College and university professors have not been exempt from the challenge of converting their classes to online instruction. In today’s technological world many courses are already taught exclusively online, but occupied facilities of higher learning show there are plenty that are not. “Many classes are not formatted to do online,” said Gaines Bailey, a drawing professor at Guilford Technical Community College. “We were fortunate to have most of the semester face to face. “Teaching online is crazy and stressful, but it is also kind of exciting to think of what technology can do moving forward. “A change like this within the semester makes you worry that a lot of students will fall off,” he added. “Instructors invest a lot of time responding to students.” Todd Zimmer, adjunct graphic design instructor, admits he has lost a few students but says others have flourished. “Some students feel at home on the computer,” he said. “Some that produced nothing in face-toface classes have actually done a little better. I might recommend online learning to them at the end of this

semester. Other students who do better in face-toface situations have stumbled. “I have tried to keep as many students as possible engaged by lots of one-onone communication. But if I had larger classes, I would probably be more of a ‘moderator’ than a handson instructor.” Zimmer noted that he thrives from being in front of a class and can gauge student’s interest levels from their body language. He finds it annoying to work with the impersonal format of a computer and to use massive amounts of typing to communicate. He likes to talk and sketch on a board or paper to get his ideas across and to see the process students do to create their work. He also misses seeing the final work printed and presented in person. However, Zimmer thinks computer classes are going to be a default learning environment for many going forward. “I am positive for the future, but I don’t think the timeline of when things will turn back to normal is realistic,” he said. “I think we’re going to be online for another semester or two at least. That’s neither positive nor negative – just realistic.” Zimmer plans to take a course in online teaching to better prepare for whatever the future holds, possibly teaching at other schools along with his classes at GTCC. Helping to homeschool

his second grader because of school closings has opened his eyes to another reality. “I think teachers of all levels should be paid more,” he said. “It’s a nightmare at times.” Vicki Craven, who teaches freshman composition at High Point University, finds it very difficult not to be in a classroom setting. “I miss seeing the students in person and the group dynamics,” she said. “It is harder for me to discern if they understand the material. I cannot look over

their shoulder to see if they are getting it. I also feel students miss the opportunity to learn from one another.” Craven considers herself the least technological person on the High Point University campus. Although offered several workshops about online teaching, it was one professor that went the extra mile to help her set up a system she could use that has allowed her to continue her classes. “I divided my class into three sections,” Craven said. “It takes longer to lecture that way, but I feel it is

more manageable. I follow up with typed notes of the main points for the day and send them to the students. When we look back on this experience, we all can say we did not quit and that we learned new things from doing it.” Craven is trying to look at the upside of online teaching. Before class, she still gets dressed and fixes her makeup. “But it is the first time in my entire teaching career that I have taught in bedroom slippers,” she acknowledged.
