GTCC holds public forums for presidential qualities By CarOl BrOOKs FReeLance WRiteR cab1hp@gmail.com What does the community want in a president at GTCC? That’s what organizers were seeking during five public forums on April 10 and 11. Current President Randy Parker has announced his retirement, effective July 31. “The one-hour forums included an open discussion about the opportunities and challenges GTCC will face in the next three, five and seven years,” said Aleasha Vuncannon, GTCC spokesperson. “Participants were also asked to comment on the qualifications, personality and any specific skill sets they would like to see in the next president.” Kennon Briggs, Association of Community College Trustees search consultant, moderated the discussion. Some for the comments from a session in Jamestown April 11 included: • Student success is a great opportunity: “We want a leader that understands our mission to help students.” • Visible in the community: “I’d like to see a president that can build community relationships and be out in the community.” • Importance of diversity and inclusion: “Diversity and inclusion is a big initiative at the state level. We talk about equity, but I hope we step into the deeper waters of diversity and make a greater investment in this area.”

randy Parker • “We want a president that values the whole college, both curriculum and continuing education.” • Ability to connect with the community and articulate an institutional vision. • Retention of both faculty and students. • Support the strategic enrollment activities the college has undertaken and continue to build on the momentum. GTCC’s presidential search committee met April 15 to review the feedback from the forums and develop a profile that will be used in the recruiting process. The presidential profile will then be presented to the GTCC Board of Trustees for approval. Applications will be accepted until June 7. Interested parties can visit https://www.gtcc.edu/presidentialsearch/search-main.php for more information.

Three-to-five finalists will be presented to the community (around late July) during a public forum. The college’s board of trustees is expected to select a new president in mid-to-late August. Parker has been president of GTCC since 2011, coming to the school from Vance-Granville Community College in Henderson where he had served since 2004. He is the school’s sesventh presicent, succeeding Don Cameron who had been the school’s top administrator for 20 years. During his administration, the school has grown, both in degree completion numbers and in campus size. The school’s aviation program has grown, as has the Larry Gatlin School of Entertainment Technology and the Center for Performing and Creative Art and three new campuses opened. Parker also oversaw construction and major renovation projects totaling over $100 million. Parker received the Phi Theta Kappa national Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction in 2018 as well as being named the 2018 Distinguished College President by the Carolina’s Region of Phi Theta Kappa Student Honor Society. “I’ve had a tremendous career,” Parker said. “I’ve worked for an educational system I believe is crucial to North Carolina’s economic future, and for three colleges that provide so much benefit to their communities. “I hope I’ve contributed, in a small way, to GTCC’s success.”

Deep River bridges to be replaced By CarOl BrOOKs FReeLance WRiteR cab1hp@gmail.com It’s sad to say, but when people get to age 50, creaks and groans from joint pain rear their ugly head, if they haven’t before. Sometimes these pains are so severe that they result in replacement of the injured joint. The same is true for structures and, in this case, the two bridges over Deep River on Business I-85 in Jamestown. The bridges were constructed in 1953 and have seen a lot of traffic pass over in their time, less these days since a newer interstate was completed nearby in 2006. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is in the process of replacing those two spans and to do so, constructed a temporary bridge just north of the existing road, on the Jamestown side of the highway. It is just west of the River Road exit, near Furnitureland

South, and will be used for southbound traffic. Current northbound traffic will use the existing southbound lanes during construction. When the northbound bridge is completed, work will begin on the existing southbound bridge as traffic shifts to the new bridge. NCDOT anticipates both lanes of traffic will be open during the day but there could be periodic nighttime closings. “While the roadway will not be closed, periodic nighttime closures will be in effect from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. over the next 24 months,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer William Snell. The project is scheduled to be completed in early November 2020 and is part of 181 bridge projects on NCDOT’s agenda. NCDOT warns motorists to be alert for shifting traffic patterns and construction when traveling in this area.

Tiny House Community Development aiding the homeless What started in 2014 as a casual conversation about addressing the problem of homelessness soon led to a viable idea. Today, the nonprofit organization Tiny House Community Development, Inc. (formerly Tiny Houses Greensboro) is creating housing options for the homeless in Greensboro and High Point. Six tiny houses, averaging 248 square feet, have been built on Causey Street in Greensboro. One is occupied, another is ready for occupancy and the other four are close to completion. A picnic/cookout area offers the opportunity for residents to interact. Volunteers have accomplished much of the work. “The land was donated by Teri Hammer so we have named the development the Hammer Tiny House Community,” Mark Stinson said. Stinson sees the value of having a place to live with a real address because at one point in his life he was homeless. Now he runs his

own business and has volunteered with the tiny house project in Greensboro since its ground breaking a little over a year and a half ago. He serves on the board of Tiny House Community Development and as its construction committee chair. “I knew about the Tiny House prototype and when someone asked me to help build the community, I agreed,” Stinson said. Students at Weaver Academy built one house at the school and donated it for the tiny house community. The entire house had to be moved to its current Greensboro location. When members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church offered to build a house, they wanted to erect it at the church site so the congregation could see how their money was being used. “We built it in the church parking lot, but made it so it could be taken apart and put on a trailer to move,” Stinson said. “It is now on a foundation at the tiny house community. Peace United Church of Christ also donated a house, and wanted it built in their parking lot.”

After owners of a recycling warehouse on West Gate City Boulevard went out of business, they donated the use of the warehouse to Tiny House Community Development for a year. “They wanted to help the homeless people who lived behind the warehouse,” Stinson acknowledged. “At first we planned to use it for recycling, but decided

to make it into a training facility and metal recycling center.” The training center offers seven-week courses in construction work. Participants learn to read blueprints, about building codes and how to use a variety of tools. There are also handson opportunities to work on see Tiny, PaGe 2

Quaker Slave Trader

By linda Willard JaMeStOWn FRiendS MeetinG

John Armfield, the son of Nathan and Polly Dempsey Armfield, was born in Guilford County, North Carolina in 1797. The Armfield family was descended from English Quakers. It’s not known if Armfield’s parents were members of any local Quaker meeting. Armfield’s grandfather, William Armfield, was disowned (removed from membership) in his local meeting for taking up arms during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the American Revolution. William Armfield was probably a member of New Garden Friends Meeting. New Garden Friends Meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina is not far from where the Battle of Guilford Courthouse was fought. There is no information regarding Armfield’s early years or his education. At some point, he ran away from home and worked as a stagecoach driver. In the 1820’s, Armfield took up slave trading. In 1828, Armfield and his uncle by marriage, Isaac Franklin had formed the partnership of Franklin & Armfield for the purpose of buying slaves in the mid-Atlantic states and selling them in the states in the Deep South, such as Mississippi. The Franklin & Armfield firm was unique in that it utilized sea travel to transport

the slaves. Their office in Alexandria, Virginia was essentially a prison compound used to hold the slaves in preparation for sale. The Franklin & Armfield firm has been called the most successful slave traders the United States has ever seen. In an advertisement, Armfield claims that he will pay the highest price for a group of slaves. Between 1828 and 1835 Franklin and Armfield sold an average of 1,200 slaves per year. In 1831, Armfield married Martha Franklin, the niece of his business partner, Isaac Franklin. Armfield joined the Episcopal church and his wife, who had been a member of the Presbyterian church, also join the Episcopal church. The Armfield’s attended Christ Cathedral in Nashville, Tennessee. The Armfield’s did not have any children. In 1836, Armfield quit the slave trading business and the partnership of Franklin & Armfield was dissolved. By 1849, Armfield and his wife had settled in Sumner County, Tennessee where he had purchased 339 acres of land. Armfield named his estate Hard Times. In 1854, Armfield purchased the town of Beersheba Springs, Tennessee and developed it as a resort. In March of 1857, Armfield was offered a seat on the board of trustees of the new University of the South, present day Sewanee University.

franklin-armfield Office During the Civil War, Armfield paid to equip a company of Confederate volunteers. In 1869, he promoted Beersheba Springs as the site of a colony of Swiss immigrants. His business suffered from the effects of the Civil War and the fortune he had made in slave trading, shrank from $500,000 in 1850 to just $57,670 in 1870. Armfield died at his home in Beersheba Springs, Tennessee on September 20, 1871. Armfield is buried in a nearby private cemetery. Ironically, Nathan Bracken, Armfield’s African-American body servant for more than forty years, is buried beside of Armfield. Bracken had been born into slavery and apparently was never able to entirely escape from slavery even in death.

There are many varieties of flowers found in gardens around the world. Several of them are in the lily family: Day, Tiger, Canna, Trumpet, Aurelian and Oriental, among others. At this time of year, however, the Easter Lily leads the way with its association with the death of Jesus. Easter Lilies are native to Japan. They came to the United States in the late 1800s via England and Bermuda and bulbs were being produced here by 1898. After World War I, Louis Houghton, who had been stationed in Japan, brought bulbs to the U.S. - and his home state of Oregon - in his suitcase and bulb production took off. Rather than Easter Lily, the flowers were called White Gold at the time. Japan was still a bulb-producing country, but after the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941, America no longer relied on Japan for bulb production so bulb farms began to spring up on the West Coast, primarily from Vancouver, Canada, to Long Beach, Cal. Today there are only 10 Easter Lily bulb farms left, centered primarily in Oregon and northern California. Still, that area is known as the Easter Lily Capital of the World, producing 95 percent of all Easter Lilies. Blooming in the spring, the white Easter Lilies are a symbol purity, hope and new life. These three qualities are the reasons Christians have adopted the “white-robed apostle of hope” as a symbol. The Bible mentions the flower several times, in Song of Soloman 2:2 and 5:13, Hosea 14:5, 1 Kings 7:19-22 and 2 Chronicles 4:4-5. Although not cited, it is believed Eve cried when she and Adam left the Garden of Eden and white lilies sprung up where her tears fell. It’s also said that lilies grew where Jesus’ sweat and tears fell during his crucifixion. The purity of the mother of Jesus is symbolized in the white flower and some art representations show her receiving white lilies from the angel Gabriel when Jesus was born. When her tomb was visited several days after her death, lilies were supposedly found inside. White also symbolizes the purity of Jesus. The most famous biblical reference to the Easter Lily is when Jesus told his followers, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin; and yet … Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” (Matthew 6:28 and Luke 12:27-28) To Christians, the shape of the flower is said to represent a trumpet sounding the message that Jesus has risen. Other cultures have tied the Easter Lily to motherhood. Churches all around the world have adopted the Easter Lily as the decoration of choice during the Lenten season. It is said, however, that during the Victorian era, the stamens and pistils of the flower were removed because they were seen as symbols of sexuality. Easter Lilies can be planted outdoors. They should be planted in a sunny spot in well-drained soil, with several inches of mulch. The flowers are fragrant and up to 7 inches long.

Does my cat need Himalayan salt? By sam maZZOTTa PaW’S cORneR DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats? — Jim H., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR JIM: I feel your pain. The internet has given us access to all the information we’re looking for — and all the information we weren’t. Companies have sprung up left and right, peddling the latest supplement or dietary recommendation to keep our pets totally healthy, guaranteed.

Fad diets can sometimes do harm to pets because key nutrients may be left out. Feeding dogs and cats only meat, and nothing else, can be as bad as feeding them no meat. The McCarthyite crusade against Chick-fil-A By riCh lOWry The fast-food chain Chick-fil-A is wanted on suspicion of aiding and abetting Christian organizations. The home of the “original chicken sandwich” was banned from its second airport in two weeks for the offense of contributing to Christian groups deemed anti-gay by its critics. The San Antonio City Council voted to exclude the restaurant from its airport, and Buffalo, New York, soon followed suit, thus denying travelers the option of juicy chicken sandwiches and waffle fries in the cause of social justice. This is about punishing the Georgiabased company for the faith of its leadership. The official bans are anti-Christian, unconstitutional and a harbinger of a larger effort to hunt down and punish any organization that has uncongenial views on sexual morality. In San Antonio, the leader of the antiChick-fil-A effort, City Councilman Roberto Trevino, explained that, “Everyone has a place here, and everyone should feel welcome when they walk through our airport.” The irony of discriminating against Chick-fil-A in order to demonstrate the city’s famous open-ness was, of course, lost on him. The hostility to Chick-fil-A stems from a controversy back in 2012 when its CEO, Dan Cathy, made statements opposing gay marriage, and the foundation established by the company’s founder contributed to politically engaged social-conservative groups. There was nothing wrong with this, but since most profit-seeking enterprises don’t like controversy, Cathy said the company would back off the gay-marriage debate and focus on the chicken. It has, but its critics still detect a lingering stench of Christianity. The left-wing outfit ThinkProgress issued a report cited widely in the press and

among Chick-fil-A opponents accusing the company’s foundation of “anti-equality” giving. By which it means it donated to the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (and a small Christian home for troubled young men in Vidalia, Georgia). Needless to say, a lot of other people are guilty of the same offense, given that the Salvation Army raises about $2 billion a year. To consider all that the Salvation Army does — its thrift shops, aid for the homeless, disaster relief, anti-trafficking programs, Christmas gifts to needy children and much, much more — and reduce the organization to an allegedly anti-LGBT group is perverse. For its part, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes stands accused of seeking “to spread an anti-LGBTQ message to college athletes.” It’s true that FCA asks its leaders to forswear homosexual acts, but it also wants them to pledge not to engage in heterosexual acts outside of marriage and, for that matter, refuse to use drugs, alcohol or tobacco. According to Chick-fil-A, its donation to FCA supported sports camps and school programs for inner-city kids — not exactly controversial causes. And its gift to the Salvation Army went to youth camps and Christmas presents for thousands of Atlanta kids. The latest campaign against Chick-fil-A is based on the idea that it is impermissible for it to associate with any group with a traditional Christian understanding of sex and marriage, for any purpose whatsoever, no matter how unobjectionable or noble. It is the enemies of Chick-fil-A who are intolerant and out-of-the-mainstream. They desperately need to abandon their tawdry McCarthyite crusade and “Eat Mor Chikin.” Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Easter Sunday dinner By Angela shelf medearis kitchen diva The Easter holiday has a special meaning for me. As a child, Easter meant everything was fresh and new. My mother always bought me a pretty dress and beautiful shoes to wear for the special Easter Sunday church service. After church, she prepared a lovely dinner with a lemon meringue pie, and baskets of foil-wrapped chocolate eggs and bunnies for dessert. As an adult and as a Christian, I still look at the spring season as a time of renewal, but for me, it’s more about inward spiritual reflection, repentance, gratitude and rebirth. My life as a Christian is a celebration of the real meaning of Easter.

My Easter Sunday begins with a beautiful church service. I love listening to my husband, my daughter, my son-in-law and granddaughter sing with our church choir. Our pastor, Salem Robinson, Jr., never fails to deliver an inspiring, thought-provoking sermon. After church, I cook dinner using some of the recipes from my childhood. If you’re looking for a new way to prepare lamb, try my recipe for Roasted Lamb Chops with Crispy Shallots and Pomegranate Sauce. The tradition of eating lamb on Easter has its roots in early Passover observances before the birth of Christianity. According to the biblical Exodus story, the people of Egypt suffered a series of terrible plagues, including the death of all firstborn sons. The Jews

painted their doorposts with sacrificed lamb’s blood so that God would “pass over” their homes while carrying out the punishment. Additionally, Christians refer to Jesus as the “Lamb of God,” because of his sacrifice on the cross. This is one of the many reasons why lamb is symbolically served at Easter. I love cooking and serving Australian lamb for dinner all year-round. Aussie lamb is enjoyed in more than 100 countries. Lamb from “Down Under” has an all-natural advantage. It’s free-range and feeds on the abundant pasturelands there, so it’s mild tasting and naturally lean and tender. Australian lamb is a pure product of its natural environment, free of artificial additives and hormone growth promotants. It naturally contains 13 essential nutrients required for good health, including iron, zinc, omega-3 and B vitamins. Here are a few tips for preparing lamb: * Bring your meat up to room temperature before cooking. * Grass-fed meats require less cooking time — about 30% less is a good rule of thumb. * Allow steaks, chops and roasts to rest 5-10 minutes before cutting to allow the juices to re-absorb into the meat.
