Bypass development may not be as extensive as thought

By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

The Jamestown Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee met in person April 14, the first time in over a year. Previous meetings had been via Zoom. The group – made up of town and extraterritorial jurisdiction residents – is responsible for guiding Benchmark Planning in what they believe the goals of the town are in the upcoming years. Vagn Hansen, of Benchmark

Planning, the company working on the comprehensive plan, presented figures on research the company has done which will influence how much Jamestown could grow. He noted that as Guilford County population has grown, so has Jamestown. However, new housing has not kept up with the population. Jamestown currently has less than 4 percent housing availability, a smaller figure than neighboring cities High Point and Greensboro, as well as less than the county and state. The medium

JUMC hosts community-wide National Day of prayer By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com The year 2020 saw the National Day of Prayer observed quite differently because of closures due to the pandemic. But with the spread of Covid-19 lessening, 2021 will once more see the Prayer Warriors at Jamestown United Methodist Church sponsoring a community-wide daylong call to prayer on May 6. The community is invited to participate. The theme for this year’s National Day of Prayer is “Lord Pour out Your Love, Life, and Liberty.” The theme verse is found in 2 Corinthians 3:17, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” The Prayer Warriors at JUMC are asking individuals who wish to be part of a prayer chain to choose a 30-minute time slot between 6 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Call 336-420-9362 to designate the time you wish to pray. “We want to have continuous prayer during that time period,” said Phyllis Allen, a member of the Prayer Warriors team. “You can pray in your home, your car, at work or any place you are. The church sanctuary will be open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and you can pray in a pew or at the alter.” Those who choose to pray at church will receive a prayer guide booklet filled with prayers and scripture verses. It also explains how to use the word ACTS to direct your prayers – Adoration, Confession, Thanks and Supplication. At noon, the Rev. David Greene, pastor at JUMC, will present a short devotional and Erin Betlej, associate pastor, will lead a candlelight vesper service at 7:30 p.m. The wearing of masks and social distancing will be observed. value of homes in Jamestown is second only to Elon in the state. With this in mind, Benchmark looked at parcels within Jamestown and the extraterritorial jurisdiction area for potential market demand. The company found 19 potential growth areas with a total of approximately 1,100 acres. They compared these areas in several categories, including whether the sites were within watersheds and the ability of the Town to provide public services. Of those sites, Benchmark believes 100 acres could be non-

residential use, 500 residential and the remaining 600 mixed use, but primarily residential. There are several undeveloped areas that are privately owned with limited accessibility. “There will be very little commercial and light industrial,” Hansen said, noting over 90 percent would be residential development. Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson echoed Hansen’s statement by saying, “Most of the easily developable areas are gone.”

Some of these areas are along the new Jamestown Bypass, but Hansen believes the Town should not be as worried as expected about development there. “We’re not not sure the bypass will have as much development impact on the town as it might have if it was designed a different way,” Hansen said. He pointed to the 2007 Land Development Plan, which showed potential commercial development on the bypass, but noted that since there SEE ByPASS, PAGe 2

Jamestown boasts a wealth of architectural history By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

In a county that is 250 years old and in a town like Jamestown that was settled 269 years ago, it is not surprising to find interesting – and sometimes odd – architecture constructed by early settlers. Preservation Greensboro focuses on architectural history and its website states the mission: “We build thriving communities by protecting and renewing our historic and architectural treasures.” As a part of the “Guilford at 250” recognition, Preservation Greensboro recently sponsored a virtual program on Jamestown’s early history and architecture, presented by Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace. The town was settled in 1752, 19 years before the county was founded. It was founded in 1816, just eight years after Greensboro and 43 years before High Point. “Jamestown was the commercial, educational and cultural center of Guilford County in the 1800s,” Rogers said. “There were three dozen manufacturing companies here.” “Jamestown was not backwoods, but very sophisticated,” added Benjamin Briggs, executive director of Preservation Greensboro. “People were educated and had wealth.” The majority of settlers of Jamestown were Quaker and that influence is seen in the style of architecture. Quaker James Mendenhall had moved to the area from Pennsylvania by 1759, constructing a home around 1765 on Deep River, which

is now under High Point’s Koonce City Lake, near the Penny Road bridge. He received a Granville Grant of 240 acres in 1769 of what is now the lake and part of City Lake Park, Rogers said. Mendenhall had built grist and saw mills earlier. James moved to Georgia, leaving his home to son George who rented rooms as an inn along what was called the PetersburgSalisbury Stagecoach Road. When George learned the Salisbury Road would reroute a mile south, away from his inn, he decided to move as well. Learning of the 240 acres his father had received in the Granville

Grant plus more acreage James had acquired, George created a community he named Jamestown, in honor of his father. He laid out the town in a grid, with perpendicular roads and blocks with half-acre lots. Most of the lots were given to his children, including Richard, who built his SEE HISTORy, PAGe 2

remembering Wilber’s real barbecue and real hospitality Writing about another North Carolina barbecue icon, Pete Jones, founder of The Skylight Inn in Ayden, Bragg described the real barbecue that fires Reed’s passions: “They offer slow-cooked pork, chopped and blended with a vinegar-based sauce perked up with red pepper or Texas Pete hot sauce. This barbecue is as different from the tomato, mustard or molassesbasted meat of the lower South as white whiskey is from hot chocolate. It has a zing, a whang and a fo-dee-doe-doe.” Those results don’t come easy, noted Bragg. He followed Shirley as he “stalks through his long, low cookhouse, through a thick haze of smoke. The dull glow from the dying coals is still hot on his skin. It would seem a little bit like hell, if it didn’t smell so good.” It takes a bit of hell to make the heavenly ‘cue. Those results are what fires Reed’s passion. For me, however, it is the ambience of the good barbecue restaurant, a community gathering place where the owner and staff know your name and make you feel at home.

You could sum it up in one word: hospitality. It is a hard word to define, but you sure feel it when you are lucky enough to experience it. The New York Times writer, Tejal Rao, gave it a try last week: “Unlike service, which is technical and easy to describe, hospitality is abstract, harder to define. It can’t be summed up in a checklist. It can’t be bought. Hospitality is both invisible and formidable—it surrounds you. You can find it at a rest stop on the highway, and miss it at the host stand of a fine-dining restaurant. You feel its presence, or you don’t.” It is at Wilber’s and other communitybased restaurants that I feel hospitality’s presence. That is why I join John Shelton Reed in giving thanks for Wilber Shirley and others like him who provide the joyful experience of real hospitality and real barbecue.

continued from front house around 1811 on Federal Street. It still stands at what is now 602 West Main Street. “It’s been said this is probably the biggest single grouping of Mid-Atlantic Georgian architecture in the South,” Rogers said. “I don’t think anyone would argue that. “The chimneys are inset. This architecture [style] was old-fashioned when it was built. There are blind segmental arches over the windows. A transom was added probably in the 1830s to the arch of the front door.” Rogers noted that a twostory brick extension was added to the western side of the house in the 1820s or ‘30s. Parts of the addition didn’t last long. “One afternoon, I think it was April 8, 1837. a tornado ripped through Jamestown and it tore off the upper section of this addition and threw most of it into Federal Street (Main Street). Richard Julius Mendenhall, Richard’s son, was sleeping in front of the fireplace when it happened and he later said when he awakened, he looked up to where the ceiling should have been, and it was gone.” The damaged upper section was rebuilt of wood. A Tidewater-style porch was added, something odd in this area, along with a side porch, which was once enclosed and used as a post office by Richard’s oldest daughter Minerva, who was Jamestown’s first postmistress. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Men-

These were later used to restore the chimney at his grandson Richard’s house. The Pennsylvania-style bank barn at the Mendenhall Homeplace is possibly the only one of its kind in existence in the South. It is built into a bank or hill on two levels, both with ground access. In the back, the cantilevered top floor acts as a roof over the doors for the animal stalls. Ezra Kersey built Mendenhall’s store across the street at the entrance to City Lake Park. “It’s Flemish bond pattern, much like the Richard Mendenhall house,” Rogers said. Flemish Bond alter-

side the new railroad around 1855, moving from the original Jamestown community west of Deep River to what would become new Jamestown, or Jamestown Depot. “It was positioned at an angle so Coffin could watch the depot,” Rogers said. “It is basically a saltbox house.” The house features board and batten wooden siding, which adds to the strength of the building. “Windows are almost to the floor and it has a high foundation,” Rogers said. There is a herringbone brick floor and spring in the cellar. Rogers ended his presentation with the Iddings House, on the grounds of GTCC. The white clapboard house was build around 1825 by Mark Iddings, who may have owned 158 acres where GTCC, Christine Joyner Greene Education Center, Ragsdale High and Millis Road Elementary schools are located. Perhaps the most interesting interior features of the house are some of the doors. Now used upstairs, these doors are hand-made with an odd lozenge, or diamond, shape design across the center. GTCC is planning major renovation on the Iddings House this year. Rogers’ presentation was the fourth in the series “Guilford at 250”. Previous videos and more of his presentation can be found at preservationgreensboro.org/ event. Tours of Mendenhall Homeplace are available and those of the Park buildings can be arranged. Some of the houses featured in the presentation are privately owned. For more information, visit https://preservationgreensboro.org/ and mendenhallhomeplace.com.

would not be access to land abutting the bypass except at interchanges, development should be limited. “We are all in agreement that the development around the bypass in Jamestown’s jurisdiction will be limited to those areas where the bypass has ‘at-grade’ crossings,” Johnson said. “That would primarily be near Harvey and Vickrey Chapel roads. “Benchmark feels that the area first identified in the 2007 Land Development Plan was a little too large and would like to shrink that somewhat. The area in the 2007 plan was identified at a time when the exact location of the bypass had yet to be determined. This plan update will allow us to

narrow that scope since we know the exact location of the right-of-way now.” The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will hold public workshops on May 1 and 4, lasting approximately an hour and a half each. There will be four sessions per day. The purpose of the workshop is the same as that of the Committee – to learn what residents believe are goals of the town as far as development and growth in upcoming years. The meetings will be held in the Civic Center at Town Hall to allow for social distancing. Residents are urged to sign up for one of these meetings by visiting envisionjamestown.com. Signup times will be posted in the near future.

Plan purpose

The Steering Committee met twice in March to review a new vision statement and learn some of the purposes of a comprehensive plan. Those purposes are: • to facilitate compatible growth, • maintain strong neighborhoods, • preserve and protect historic and cultural resources, • promote pedestrian and bicycle transportation, • enhance the vibrancy and quality of downtown, • expand public recreational opportunities, • provide effective and efficient public services, • protect valuable natural resources, • maintain excellent public safety services, • promote diversity and inclusiveness in the community, • build a safe and efficient transportation network, and • strengthen the economy by leveraging the Town’s unique resources. Some of the things the committee targeted was building strong neighborhoods and making certain there was high-quality growth. Another goal was historic preservation. Environmental protection was also important as was building up the downtown area and creating neighborhood parks within a walk-able and bike-able community. Making certain people from all walks of life and abilities were able to take part in Jamestown’s amenities was important. On everyone’s mind was restoration and redevelopment of the Oakdale Cotton Mill and mill village.

nates stretchers, the sides of bricks, and headers, the ends of bricks. Rogers noted this is very hard to create. Along the roofline are what Rogers called cogging, or dog teeth, bricks set at a 45-degree angle to those of the walls, creating a jagged appearance. This feature is also seen on the nearby Meeting House, constructed around 1814. On the east side of the store is an exterior fireplace and on the north side, facing into the park, is a dead man’s door. No stairs lead to this exterior door, so anyone walking out would probably fall to their death. Early settlers used a pulley to take items to the second floor because stairwells were too narrow. Putpost holes were left in the brick facade so a pole or beam could be inserted to create scaffolding to reach the second floor. Some of these holes still exist while others have been filled in. Welcome spring with fresh artichokes By ANGELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA Artichokes are strange and lovely. It’s a thistle, a flower and its pale green blossoms are one of the first signs of spring. Artichokes are in season, so it’s time to go to the market and get some thorny deliciousness for yourself. Artichokes may be a food you already think you know, stripped down to its heart and frozen and packaged in a box, a jar or a can. The wonderful thing about artichokes is that they are delicious in all their forms. But if you’ve never had the chance to buy them in their full, sculptural beauty, fresh off the plant, mature or tender and young, then you are missing something special. The artichoke is a member of the cardoon family, which is native to the Mediterranean, and cultivation began there as early as the ninth century. The plant likes mild, dry climates, and in the United States it seems to like California’s central valley almost exclusively. Being what it is, which is a leafy flower, it is a great source of fiber. It’s also high in vitamin C and magnesium. If you live in California, you’ve probably had the opportunity to savor a fresh artichoke. However, the artichoke might be a little exotic to the rest of us. The big round globe, with all its layers, might seem a little intimidating. What to do with it? What is edible, and what is not? Use fresh artichokes within a few days of purchasing. You may want to trim off the prickly points of the leaves before preparing them. Surprisingly, most of the artichoke flower is edible. The only exceptions are the more fibrous end of the stem (although

the upper part of the stem is very good) and the fuzzy center, or beard of the flower, called the “choke.” This part of the large, mature artichoke is not edible. There are many tasty and attractive ways to prepare fresh artichokes. Large heads are delicious stuffed and roasted. Or artichokes can be steamed and the leaves removed and served for dipping into any sauce your imagination can dream up. Once the “choke” is removed, the hollowed-out core can be used as a serving dish for salads or soups. Small, young artichokes don’t need to have the fibrous center choke removed, and it can be cooked and eaten whole. This recipe for Lemon Chicken With Artichokes and Olives is the perfect showcase for fresh artichokes and the vibrant flavors of spring. Just follow my step-by-step instructions for preparing them. LEMON CHICKEN WITH ARTICHOKES AND OLIVES 1 large (4 pound) chicken, halved, backbone removed 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth 6 whole garlic cloves with skins on 1/2 medium yellow onion, peeled and roughly chopped 5 large artichoke hearts, quartered, 3 1/2 pounds total (See “How to Prep Hearts” below) 2 tablespoons grated lemon peel 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 cup pitted green or black olives 5 flatleaf parsley sprigs

How to Prep Artichoke Hearts: Snap off thick green outer leaves down to yellowish core. Halve artichokes crosswise; discard thorny tips. Trim stem to about 1/2 inch and peel tough outer skin from remaining stem. Halve artichoke lengthwise; scoop out and discard fuzzy, redtipped choke. Put hearts in cold water with a little lemon juice and set aside until you’re ready to cook.

ISRAELI COUSCOUS WITH CURRANTS Israeli or pearl couscous is a delicious alternative to traditional couscous. This larger, chewier pasta (contrary to popular belief, couscous is not a grain) adds a pleasant texture to the dish, and it takes on a hint of nutty flavor when toasted.

To Prepare the Recipe: 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Heat oil and butter in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. 2. Sprinkle chicken all over with poultry seasoning, salt and pepper; lay chicken in hot oil, skin-side down. Cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Turn chicken over. Pour the chicken broth around the outside edges of the chicken. Add the garlic, onion, artichokes, lemon and lemon peel. 3. Roast chicken in the oven, uncovered, until cooked through, about 1 hour, or when the temperature reaches 165 F on a thermometer placed in the thickest part of the thigh without touching the bone. 4. Remove the bird from the oven and let it rest 10 minutes. The thigh meat is forgiving, even if overcooked. In fact, it becomes more tender when cooked to at least 160 F. Add the olives and parsley, and serve immediately. Serves 4-6.

1 bunch green onions 2 tablespoons margarine or butter 3 cups Israeli (pearl) couscous 2 cups water 1 cup chicken broth 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice Salt and pepper 3/4 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped 1/2 cup currants 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves, chopped

1. Cut white and light-green portion of green onions into 1/2-inch pieces. Thinly slice dark-green portions; set dark-green onion slices aside separately from 1/2-inch pieces. 2. In 4-quart saucepan, heat margarine on medium until melted. Add white and light-green onion pieces, and cook 3 minutes or until beginning to soften. Add couscous and cook 7 to 9 minutes or until most grains are browned, stirring couscous frequently. 3. Add water, broth, allspice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper to couscous; heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and couscous is tender but still slightly chewy. 4. Remove couscous from heat. Stir in toasted walnuts, currants, chopped mint leaves and reserved sliced green onions. PRAyER

CONtINUeD FrOM FrONt The Circle of Hope is sponsoring a prayer tree on which cards containing prayers may be hung throughout the day. “People may write one word or pour their hearts out and write on both sides,” said Cathy Hicks, a circle member. “These are prayers from the heart between the individual and God.” Hicks noted the prayer tree is an ongoing project. After seeing it done in Blowing Rock, Circle of Hope members wanted to model the idea at JUMC. “At the National Day of Prayer event we will hand out cards to anyone who wants to use them,” Hicks said. “We are richly blessed to have a law that has proclaimed a day of prayer for our nation each year since the first observance

of the law was signed in 1952,” said Kathy Branzell, president of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. “Decades later, America still needs our prayers. We need to be praying for all people, every day … because people are still in need and the Church is still called to a prayer, care, share lifestyle.” The original resolution was created by Congress and signed into law by Harry S. Truman. President Ronald Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. “It is our prayer today and throughout 2021 that the Spirit of the Lord pour out, pour through us across America, to fill our lives, families, churches, workplace, education, military, government, arts, enter-

tainment and media, with Biblical, not cultural, not worldly, but Spirit-empowered, Spirit-filled love, life and liberty as designed and defined by our Creator and Savior,” Branzell said.

Prayer Tree

Perhaps families or neighborhoods would like to create their own prayer tree(s). Someone could make tags or pass out index cards with string attached on which prayers can be written. These could be hung outside as an outward expression of faith in God and the power of prayer.
