Land cleared for Penny Road development By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

The site for another new housing development near Jamestown– just north of the intersection of Penny Road and East Fork Road – is being cleared and it, like the many other recent developments, will have an impact on area schools. In this most recent case, perhaps the most affected school will be Florence Elementary, just across Penny Road from the new development. Older students will attend Welborn Middle and Andrews High schools in High Point. An article in a local newspaper in 2018 announced that Greensboro-based Keystone Group, Inc., was planning construction of up to 470 townhomes and apartments on approximately 39 acres. The apartments would be similar to Keystone’s James Landing development in Jamestown and the townhomes similar to Keystone’s The Trellises in High Point. Calls to Keystone’s office for an update were not returned. In August 2018, Keystone received

rezoning approval from the High Point City Council for the property at 1761 Penny Road from Low Density Residential to Medium Density Residential. It also received rezoning approval from a Residential Single Family-3 District to a Conditional Zoning Residential District for 1761 and 1781 Penny Road. In September 2018, Briggs Development Trust, owner of the property, received voluntary contiguous annexation of approximately 38 acres at the same location as Keystone’s rezoning. The Trust planned to develop a mixed residential development of more than 400 multifamily apartments and townhomes on the site. Briggs Development Trust sold the property to Keystone Group, Inc., in October of 2018. A piece of local history will be razed when the land is totally cleared. The 1830 Nereus Mendenhall house, called the Oaks, was moved to the site in 1998 by historian Benjamin Briggs in order to preserve it. The original location is now an office park off Hwy. 68. A recent report by Guilford County on the property did not list any buildings,

so it is assumed the Mendenhall house had deteriorated too much to be inhabitable. Nereus Mendenhall (1819-1893) was the son of Jamestown’s Richard Mendenhall and was once principal of New Garden Boarding School, which became Guilford College.

New planner has knowledge of Jamestown By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com You might say Anna Hawryluk is the girl next door. Jamestown’s new town planner most recently worked for eight years in Kernersville at the Piedmont Triad Regional Council. And being the girl next door, she already knows something about the town as she was interim planner for two months between Carrie Spencer and the return of current Planning Director Matt Johnson. Additionally, PTRC has worked as an advisor to Jamestown in planning matters and Johnson knows her abilities quite well. Hawryluk – the “w” is pronounced as a “v” – is not Johnson’s assistant, he stressed. With growth possibilities in the near future, the one-person Planning Department needed to grow as well. The desire for an additional planner has been in the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan for several years. “We understand there’s a great desire to live in Jamestown,” Johnson said. “Greensboro is growing, High Point is growing and

we’re growing as well. I knew that as we started to see the growth come, we were going to need some additional help. For many months, Johnson has been busy with development discussions about the Johnson property, which he believes will eventually develop, and he is looking at growth potentials along the new bypass. He also is assistant town manager and is working with the interim town manager until a new manager is hired. He noted that each of the departments helps out other departments. “[Anna] has a lot of experience in grant writing so I’m looking forward to

The room was quiet and dark, with only tiny spots of light illuminating the pages of music in front of the musicians. The door slammed shut and the director raised his baton – a glow stick that shone for all to see. Then the concert began. The occasion was actually part of a special recording of Christmas music by members from the three bell-ringer groups at Jamestown United Methodist Church: the John R. Ebel Memorial, Jubilee and Youth choirs. “The Memorial bell ringers usually go to rest homes or retirement centers to entertain during the holidays,” said Evan Petty, director of JUMC’s bell ringers program.

Claybrook takes over as golf superintendent James Claybrook is the new golf superintendent at Jamestown Park Golf Course. Claybrook replaces John Crowe, who left in February. He began his new position March 8. Claybrook, 47, has worked at Deep Springs Country Club in Stoneville, Grandover Resort in Greensboro, Greensboro National and finally at Oak Hills Golf Course in Eden. He was hired thru the Carolinas Golf

Superintendent Association. The Madison/Stoneville area native majored in turf grass maintenance at N.C. State University. He considers himself a “middle-of-theroad golfer.” “It passes the time. You can get away from yourself and everyday stresses,” Claybrook said of the game of golf. “That’s how I started in golf [maintenance], playing golf,” he said. “I was interested in what they did and I [spoke] with the superintendent there.” A golf course superinten-

dent is responsible for the course from tee to green, making sure everything is constantly improved. A large part of his duties is making certain the players are happy and that the greens are rolling the best they can be. “I think Jamestown Park is a great layout. I love the pine trees,” he said, noting that trees are bad for the grass near tees or greens. Still, he feels more ornamental trees would make the course more beautiful. The main challenge, he feels, is the irrigation system. There have been many

James Claybrook breaks in the system, which was installed in 2011, not typical for this type of system. He doesn’t believe the entire system needs to be replaced.

“The main problem is the fairways,” Claybrook said. “Sections need to be replaced. If we can get those sections replaced, we should be very good.” Jay Gardener, a previous course superintendent, filled in after Crowe left and is still available for advice. “I’m grateful for the opportunity [in Jamestown],” Claybrook said. “It’s going to be a challenge but I’m up for the challenge. I’m excited.” Claybrook will have a lot of input on the proposed new golf maintenance building,

which will replace outdated space adjacent to the first hole. Plans now call for moving equipment to the old fairgrounds building just up East Fork Road. Claybrook is not the only recent hire at the golf course. Justin May has been hired as assistant golf superintendent, returning to the position he held in Jamestown from 2003-2013. He will begin his duties April 5. Justin King has been hired as turf equipment mechanic. King comes from Oak Hollow Golf Course in High Point.

continued from front “Last summer, Erin Betleg, an associate minister, and I began to discuss how we could safely share our music ministry with this population.” A video recording seemed to be the solution, but that proved to be much more challenging then imagined. Mike Jenkins, the church organist, served as the engineer for the recording and he and Petty spent a lot of time together over the fall trying to figure out how to get a clear recording that sounded good on a video. “How the human ear and the microphone pick up sounds is totally different,” Petty said. “After the clapper hit the bell, the sustaining sound which is musical to the ear blended into white noise on the microphone.” Much trial and error revealed that sounds from the lights in the room, traffic outside, whistles from passing trains and even the recording equipment interfered with the melodious sounds of the bells. Every tiny sound was magnified. The solution was the darkened room with the equipment placed outside it. “If ringers whispered to one another or counted to themselves the microphone would pick it up,” Petty said. “You even had to be careful about the clothes you wore,” acknowledged Leonora Ingle, who plays treble bells in the Memorial choir. “One night I made the mistake of wearing a blouse with buttons. When I was tying to silence my bells, I

kept hitting the buttons and the microphone picked up the sound.” Because of Covid-19 the logistics of setting up the bells for practice also had to be taken into consideration. The group tried playing outside but the conflicting noise made it impossible. A classroom in the church was selected and to keep the six-foot recommended social distancing the tables were configured into a large horse-shoe shape instead of a line. “The technical difficulties also completely changed the nature of what we were doing,” Petty said. “All we had inside the room was one stereo microphone. “Every recording started with the door slamming,” he added with a smile. The musical numbers were recorded by measures so an entire piece would not have to be redone if interrupted by traffic, train or emergency sirens from the nearby fire station. Some pages of the music were copied to eliminate the sound of pages turning. Although Petty says ringing bells is 80 percent mental and 20 percent physical, he noted that the visual element of a performance is very much a part of the experience. “There is a lot of movement involved,” he said. After the audio was successfully completed, the ringers were videoed performing in the church sanctuary. Betleg then melded the two parts into one smooth video production. By the second week of December, the video was ready to share. The finished production included seven pieces of music and was over 20 minutes long. Petty sent out 28 letters including a QR code, which could be scanned to link to the video online, to rest

Gingery Shrimp and Noodles Light and fresh, this Asian-inspired dish tantalizes with the scents of ginger, soy and green onion. Low-cal shrimp and nearly 2 pounds of nutrient-rich cabbage keep it healthful. Salt and pepper 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 bunch green onions, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon peeled finely chopped fresh ginger 1 pound shelled and deveined 16- to 20-count shrimp, with tail part of shrimp left on, if you like 3/4 cup water 1/3 cup lower-sodium soy sauce 2 bags (14- to 16-ounce) shredded cabbage mix for coleslaw 1 pound rice noodles 1. Heat covered 6-quart pot of water to boiling on high. Add 2 teaspoons salt. 2. In 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium. Add green onions and ginger; cook 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle shrimp with 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Add shrimp to skillet in single layer; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until shrimp just turn opaque, stirring frequently. Transfer shrimp to medium bowl. 3. To same skillet, add 3/4 cup water and soy sauce, scraping up browned bits. Stir in cabbage mix; cover and cook 6 to

7 minutes or until vegetables are crisptender, stirring often. 4. Meanwhile, add noodles to boiling water in pot. Cook minimum time that label directs, stirring occasionally. Drain well; rinse under cold water and drain again. Return to pot; add shrimp and vegetable mixture, tossing until wellcombined. Serves 6. continued from front getting our Parks and Recreation Master Plan adopted and start the process of looking at grant applications,” he said. “She’ll be of tremendous help there.” Johnson said that partially due to the pandemic, the Town is getting a lot of remodel and pool requests and he has been overwhelmed with work. With the hiring of Hawryluk, he will be able to share duties and the Planning Department will be more efficient and more responsive to needs. “She’s definitely going to do a ton of stuff. We’re very, very, very happy to have Anna here,” Johnson said. Hawryluk believes her background will be an asset to all departments. The Mooresville native minored in planning at Appalachian State University and has worked in energy planning, weatherization, environmental programs, long-range planning, transportation-related fuel emissions and sustainability. She began with PTRC after graduation, prior to beginning her master’s degree. Grant writing, an important part of the planner position, to request funding from

programs to offset costs to the municipality, is one of her specialties. She has also worked in Raleigh and Winston-Salem. “I really liked working in Jamestown,” she said when the job in Jamestown became available, since she had worked as interim planner. “It was an easy fit for me. “I’d like to work for one government, rather than 74,” she added, noting the scope of PTRC’s coverage. Her LinkedIn profile lists several personal goals, two of which “are to spend lots of time outside and finally make a birdie at golf.” Hawryluk is anxious to get to work in Jamestown, in fact, she was a half hour early her first day, March 22. When asked what she sees as the biggest challenge facing Jamestown, she mentioned managing growth. “Jamestown is a sweet little town,” Hawryluk said. “[I like the] sidewalks and little neighborhoods. There are a lot of opportunities [for development] It will take a lot of time. “I’m excited. It’s a fun place to be.”

homes, retirement centers and rehab facilities. “We recently completed an Easter video that was about the same length,” Petty said “The recording projects were very different from what the ringers are used to, but there was a lot of determination to do them. I appreciate their effort and adaptability. The entire production took a lot of teamwork. Some people had to learn new skill sets that were not in their job description.” “I think making the videos was more stressful than playing before an audience,” Ingle said. “But it was a learning opportunity for all of us. It broadened our horizons.” “Challenging and time consuming are the best words to describe what we did,” said Sarah Burger, who typically plays the bass bells. “(Betleg) did an amazing job of putting the sound and visual together. At one point I rang the wrong bells when filming the visual but just kept going. No one could tell because the audio was correct. “Kudos to Evan for all the work he has done as director,” she added. “He has gone above and beyond. He encourages us to do our best. John (Eble, who started the bell ringing program at JUMC decades before) would be pleased with what Evan has done.” Although making the videos was indeed time consuming, sharing the music in an online format has inspired Petty. He is considering doing videos in the future to complement the bell ringers’ in-person performances. “I do not want to lose what we have learned along the way, but hope to continue to use this for a good purpose,” he said.
