Some call it lockdown. others call it social distancing or quarantine. For my family it has become a time to show a bit of creativity as they deal with national, state and community guidelines for handling CoVID-19. From enjoying a family supper on the rooftop to using rolls of toilet paper as a backdrop for a Zoom youth meeting to sharing tea and talk across a walkway while planting seeds for a summer garden – the key to coping seems to be the ability to think outside the box. When my birthday was approaching, my son and daughter-in-law decided I needed a good old-fashion family celebration, with a new twist, of course, to meet today’s standards. Knowing my fondness for hot tea, steeped in a pretty

pot and served with just a touch of something sweet, they decided to host a quarantine tea – or in their words, a “QuaranTea” in my honor. The evening event was held on my front porch with a minimum of festive décor. Six guests arrived bringing their own refreshments, along with technical devices so long-

distance family members could attend. An iPad and two phones where strategically placed and occasionally moved to allow for interaction of all the guests. Blowing out the candle centered in the middle of a fat homemade cream puff was a bit of a challenge, however. After all, the cream puff and candle

were in Raleigh. With help from one of my granddaughters and a big exhale on my part the flaming light was extinguished. “Boy, I did really well,” I exclaimed proudly. “I blew that candle out from 90 miles away.” SEE NOTE, PAGe 2

Dear Town of Jamestown Utility Customers: on March 31, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive order no. 124, mandating additional consumer protection measures for north Carolina citizens. In an effort to comply with that order, the Town of Jamestown will not add late fees or non-payment fees nor disconnect service for residential customers for the next 60 days beginning April 1. While the Town will be working with customers who are going through especially difficult financial times, it is important to realize that utility balances will not go away. There is currently no legal authority for the Town to waive account balances. As long as services are being used on any account, the total balance will increase. It is recommended that you stay as current as possible. Town staff will work with you to set up a payment plan if needed. Town Hall remains closed to the public. However, staff is working and can receive payments through the drop slot. You may also visit the Town website at www. jamestown-nc.gov and use the payment portal linked there. Customers may also call 833.394.6865 and make payment by telephone. The Town does not charge any convenience fees for online or telephone payments. Town staff continues to work hard providing essential services for the citizens of Jamestown. It is an uncertain time, but staff is available at 336.454.1138 Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm to answer questions that arise. As with most other businesses these days, it hasn’t been business as usual for funeral homes in the wake of the CoVID19 pandemic. not only do funeral home workers want to be a comfort during times of sadness, they must also pay attention to what is going on in the world around them and take appropriate measures for not only the mourners, but themselves. The national Funeral Directors Association (nFDA) issued new guidelines on April 1 for not only handling the bodies, but funerals themselves. “While nFDA is deeply committed to promoting the value of a funeral, the unprecedented novel coronavirus (CoVID-19) pandemic requires this profession to balance our long-held values with the need to: flatten the curve of the pandemic; protect the health of attendees, funeral home staff and clergy/celebrant; and reduce the potential for community spread and mass-fatalities,” reads the announcement. Hanes Lineberry funeral director Al Lineberry is heeding those guidelines. “So far we haven’t had a virus death so we’re working

continued from front like we always do,” Lineberry said. “We have not had any one of the three deaths [in the county as of April 3]. “Our protocol is pretty much the same as it’s always has been. We’re extremely cautious. We wear gloves and masks. Just normal standard operating procedures.” Jamestown resident Mickey Peeler of Cumby Family Funeral Services in High Point said they “have to take special precautions.” Funeral homes are increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting facilities. Both men mentioned the number of people at a funeral is currently limited to 10 immediate family members, plus clergy, funeral directors and cemetery staff. While small family funerals are still being held in some churches and chapels, most families are opting for a small graveside service,

often with an announcement that a memorial service will be held at a later date. Once the pandemic threat has been lifted, the funeral homes will contact families to schedule the memorial service. “We’re postponing a lot of services,” Lineberry said. “We’ll hold memorial services at a later date. It seems to be more what people are doing right now.” Peeler agreed that many people are postponing the service. He added, however, that some services are being held in backyards and columbariums, the latter for those deceased who have been cremated. Both Lineberry and Peeler say cremation requests are running about normal. Even with a graveside service, most cemeteries do not allow chairs for the mourners during the pandemic and participants must practice social distancing. The typical hugging that

NFDA recommends webcasting, Facetime or live streaming for scheduling arrangements and/or the funeral itself. While COVID-19 is a new disease and information is being learned every day, NFDA said, “There is currently no known risk

associated with being in the same room at a funeral or visitation service with the body of someone who died of COVID-19.” However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes, “People should consider not touching the body of someone who has died of COVID-19.” Someone recently noted, “Funeral home workers have a difficult job every day, providing comfort to those experiencing grief. The switch from onsite to online classes at GTCC has been very challenging. I miss the computer-tutoring lab. When I was having trouble with an assignment recently, Vickie connected to my computer and walked me through my problem. When online classes started, one of my grandsons showed me how to connect and submit work to a forum and Teams. His help was invaluable. If I make it through this semester, it will be thanks to the help and encouragement of friends and family. But I must say that as stressed as I sometimes get, learning new skills and information has been rewarding.
