Supporting one another and others keep church members busy By nORMa B. dennIs FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com The words “busy” and “All Saints Episcopal Church” seem to be synonymous. The first certainly identifies the second’s members. The congregation, though small in size, is constantly reaching out to connect with and support each other and surrounding neighborhoods. The next five months are no exception. On May 5 from 4-6 p.m., the church at 4211 Wayne Road in Greensboro will host its Celebration of Creation, including gardens and animals. People may bring soil, plants or seeds to be blessed by a special litany. That will be followed by individual blessings of animals that have been brought to the event. A reception with snacks for the animals and their owners will follow. “This is open to anyone who wants to come,” said the Reverend Paula Rachal, the church rector. “We also will offer tours of the church.”

For the third year, the church will host a Farmers’ Market from May through August. Representatives of Bernie’s Berries bring fresh produce to the church each Saturday from 8-11 a.m. Church members use this event as a fundraiser as well as a way to reach out to the community. “We have a tent and chairs so people can sit and hang out for a while,” said Pam Alexander, a longtime member of the church. “People share recipes,” added Rachal. “There is one lady who, no matter what we have for sale, has a recipe for it.” A special basket at the market is filled with crocheted squares called prayer patches. “Anyone may take one,” Rachal said. “If they are feeling overwhelmed, they can hold it and realize someone cares and is praying. We also offer prayer cards and people are invited to write down any concern they have and leave it with us so we can pray for them. It’s amazing how positive they are about this.”

For the past five years, volunteers from the church also have cultivated vegetables in their own little “Garden of Eatin’.” The produce from it goes to local food pantries. “Our original vision was to provide space where people could raise their own gardens,” Alexander said. “But many who needed it the most did not have transportation or means to work in the garden, so we took it over.” Volunteers who enjoy gardening raise a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, green beans and melons. “They water, hoe and weed . . . and weed . . . and weed,” Alexander said smiling. “The biggest problem is keeping the deer out of it.” New this year is Summer Movie Night, which will be held on either Fridays or Photo by Norma B. Lucy Coffin Ragsdale: a pioneer in Jamestown education By CaROL BROOKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

By CaROL BROOKs FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com In about a month, ambitious walkers, joggers and cyclists will be able to go from the Piedmont Environmental Center (PEC) on Penny Road all the way to Armstrong Park near High Point University. Although the trail is already in use, the City of High Point plans to officially open the new 1.3-mile connector of the High Point Greenway from Deep River Road’s University Park to PEC on June 1, not so coincidentally, National Trails Day. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the connector Greenway will be held at University Park, 1800 Deep River Road, on June 1, followed by a “first walk” for those interested. A National Trails Day event will be held at 10 a.m. at the Environmental Center, with guided hikes, live birds

of prey and environmental education exhibits. The connector is the final leg of the Greenway to be completed. While much of the pathway is paved, about 70 percent of the connector is an elevated boardwalk, necessary because of the low-lying wetlands the path crosses. “There are a lot of pretty greenways in the area,” said Lee Tillery, High Point Parks and Recreation director, at a meeting in March. “This is the prettiest section you will ever see. You will literally be walking in the trees when you’re up on this boardwalk.” The total length from Armstrong Park (305 E. Parkway Ave.) to PEC (1220 Penny Road) – where it connects to the Bicentennial Greenway – is approximately 4.55 miles. In 2010, David Hyder, then-transportation planning administrator for the City of High Point, reported

The new elevated portion of the Greenway gives walkers, joggers and cyclists the sense of walking among the tree branches. that an environmental review found there would be a problem crossing the floodway and wetlands area just east of Deep River Road at University Park. Several bridges would be required. The project cost at the time was estimated to be $3 million, factoring in bridges in low-lying floodway and wetland areas, rather than just pouring asphalt to match the existing Greenway. Plans were to begin in 2011 with a projected opening of 2012. That didn’t happen. The High Point City Council rejected the use of $2 million in existing bond funds to complete the trail by a vote of 8-1. The reason cited was that there were more pressing parks and recreation issues in the town. Just before Thanksgiving 2015, Tillery announced the city had received a U.S. Congestion Mitigasee GReenWay, PAGE 2

With the school year winding to a close, it is probably fair to say that many students and teachers at Ragsdale High School don’t know the story of the school’s namesake. To most people, Lucy Coffin Ragsdale is just the person for whom the local high school is named. But for former Jamestown mayor Billy Ragsdale, Lucy Coffin Ragsdale was more – she was his grandmother. Lucy Cook Coffin was born in Greensboro on Nov. 5, 1879, the granddaughter of Jamestown physician Dr. Shubal Coffin and Thomas Cook, the owner of Oakdale Cotton Mill. Billy Ragsdale thinks that she probably met her future husband, William Gannaway Ragsdale, at the mill. William was president of the company. The couple married in 1902 had seven children, Joe, Mary, Lucy, Virginia, William Jr., Emily and Tom. “She was just a real kind, hardworking person,” Billy recalled several years ago. “She didn’t work outside the home (but I think) she did teach school for a while. I don’t know how long, but I know she was a teacher. Probably before she married. “She was real active in the school after teaching because, you know,

Quakers are very much into education.” It was this dedication to education that resulted in the naming of the school. Lucy organized the first PTA in Guilford County in 1919 and served as its president from 1919-1928. Her husband served on the Jamestown School Board. When it came time to name the new school on High Point Road in 1959, son William Jr., who was a county commissioner, suggested his mother. “When they were talking about naming the school,” Billy recalled, “(my father) said, ‘I want you to name it see RaGsdaLe, PAGE 2

Once again, construction stalled, but the city awarded a contract in December 2017 for a cost of $3.96 million and construction began in earnest in 2018. Greenway trails are left in a natural, well-shaded state but with an asphalt path to provide an enjoyable course for walking, jogging, biking and skating. Interpretive displays dot the pathways. They provide wildlife habitats, migration, breeding and nesting sites and protect floodplains from encroachment by development. Greenways are an important element not only of recreation, but they add safe routes, boost economic development and connect communities, something Tillery said was more important than ever. He pointed out that connectivity is one of the basis of his department’s new Comprehensive Master Plan. “Probably the most popular request citizens want is that walkability, that connectability of greenways and trails,” Tillery said. “It’s a national trend, and it’s also reflected in High Point and Guilford County. We’re glad to be a part of that, and we want to move forward.” The Bicentennial Greenway can be accessed at Burnt Poplar Road in western Greensboro. The PEC itself features 6.6 miles of natural trails. For years, area outdoor enthusiasts have longed for a regional trail from High Point to Greensboro. When complete, the Bicentennial Greenway, a joint effort between the county and Greensboro begun in 1989, will run nearly 20 miles from Guilford Courthouse National Military Park to Armstrong Park. Additional shorter trails branch off from the main greenway, including seven at PEC and 10 at Gibson Park. High Point is not the only municipality emphasizing fitness. The Town of Jamestown has long promoted itself as a walking community, citing the brick sidewalks installed several years ago around

town. Capital Improvement Project plans call for construction of more sidewalks along Oakdale Road, East Main Street and East Fork Road. The East Fork Road project will include a pedestrian bridge over Koonce City Lake connecting to the Bicentennial Greenway. Construction is expected to begin this summer. Future plans show a new sidewalk along Penny Road, connecting with the back entrance to City Lake Park, which High Point is hoping to turn into a connector to the PEC. These additional sidewalks will create a loop around Jamestown and Koonce City Lake approximately six miles long. This monthly activity highlights different countries from the members’ heritage and includes games, songs and food related to that country. If a person grew up in the country, he or she may lead the activities. There is a cover charge of $9 for adults and $5 for children. “This is another way to build relationships,” Rachal said. “Members may invite family and friends.” September finds All Saints members again helping others. On the 15th they will participate in Greensboro Pride to show support for the LGBTQ+ community. “For the past two years we have had a table there,” Alexander said. “We listen to people’s stories, laugh with them and pray to let them know they are supported.” On Sept. 28, the church will host Dining With Friends, a fundraiser for Triad Health Project, a nonprofit that serves the HIV and AIDS community. Guests are invited to attend and make a donation for the project.

On the third Wednesday of each month, the church provides lunch for Higher Ground, a day respite for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Participants are invited to be guests at the Dining With Friends meal. Add a couple of annual fundraisers for Urban Ministry and the Winter Emergency Shelter and the word “busy” looms even larger. “Our small congregation does a lot,” Rachal said. “Sometimes we feel like the little church that could.” Sunday services at All Saints Episcopal include: Holy Eucharist at 8 a.m.; Coffee and Conversation at 9:15 a.m.; Children’s Chapel at 10:15 a.m.; and Holy Eucharist at 10:30 a.m.

In 1817, Greensboro, North Carolina was just a small village located in the Piedmont section of North Carolina. It was also home to numerous Quakers who were very opposed to slavery. Greensboro, North Carolina was also the site of a historic trial that involved slavery. Benjamin Benson, a free man of color, was living in Delaware, who when John Thompson, a Greensboro, North Carolina slave owner, kidnapped him. Thompson shackled Benson and back to Greensboro to work as a slave. A local slave by the name of Saul brought learned of Benson’s plight and notified local Quaker abolitionist. Vestal Coffin contacted authorities in Delaware. The authorities in Delaware issued an arrest warrant for Thompson. However, before the warrant could be served, Thompson sent Benson to Georgia and denied any knowledge of Benson. Benson’s existence was established. Thompson was ordered to return Benson to the New Garden community of Guilford County, North Carolina. Local Quaker abolitionist Vestal Coffin, George Swain, and Enoch Macy filed a lawsuit on his behalf. Thompson’s response to the lawsuit was to sell Benson to a new owner in Georgia. After a lengthy four-year trial Benson earned

Name a school for her.’” The booklet, “A Brief History of our School and Community”, written in the early 1960s, reads: “The present high school was named Lucy Coffin Ragsdale because of Mrs. Ragsdale’s avid interest in perpetual education and the vital role it plays in the heart of her community. … She has consistently upheld the high ideals of all early forebearers who believed that right was right and has richly shared her kindnesses and good works by proving a benediction to present residents.” “She was kind, but real stern, very set in what she believed in, and there wasn’t any variance,” recalled Billy. “But it was good enough that you believed it yourself, not just because she said it. She lived by example. When you’re a kid, you really don’t think about those things until later in life. But she was very fair. “If you got on her wrong side, she acted disappointed,” Billy said. “’I expected more of you.’ So you felt bad. ‘I love you, I care about you. Why did you do this to both of us?’ It gave you more to think about than just a whipping.” “She treated everybody fairly and alike, no matter who they were. I think she thought everyone had a value of some kind. I think that’s more of a Quaker way of thinking.” Billy also recalled that when it came time for meals, no matter who you were or what you were doing at the house, everyone – not just family – stopped work and came to the table. “She was an excellent cook and could bake anything. There was always food.” “I think one of the amazing things about her was she was exactly what she was,” said Billy. “There was no pretense or anything like that. “I think she was the kind of person who wasn’t about to ask someone to do something she wasn’t going to do herself – or couldn’t do herself or minded doing herself.”

Even with seven children to look after, Lucy still wanted to help others in need. If someone was sick, or if a woman was having a baby, she would look after their household, leaving her own daughters to run the Ragsdale home. Billy said that while the family was Quaker, there was not a Quaker meeting house in Jamestown at the time. Rather than travel to Deep River Friends with seven children in tow, Lucy and William attended and supported Jamestown United Methodist. “On Sunday they felt that was an important thing to do,” said Billy. A Sunday School class at the church today bears Lucy’s name. Lucy’s health began deteriorating by the time Billy was old enough to attend the school named for his grandmother, but that did not stop her from keeping up with his education. “The students expected me to be a good ol’ boy,” he recalled, “but others expected me, because of my grandmother, to set an example. I was kinda betwixt and between. I wasn’t above cutting up. She was sick most of the time I was in high school and my daddy told me to visit her every day after school. Of course, she had already gotten all the information from school by the time I got there. She’d give me a little talking to: ‘I heard so-and-so and I hope it’s not right. But if it is, you should not be cutting up at school.’” Lucy Cook Coffin Ragsdale died in February of 1964 and is buried at Deep River Friends Meeting. Her influence and love of education lives on in the high school, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year. She will also live on in the heart of her grandson. “She was a wonderful lady,” said Billy. “She was always good to me.” There’s another Lucy Coffin Ragsdale in town to keep the name alive. Lucy Ragsdale, the daughter Billy’s son Will, is the great-great granddaughter of the school namesake.

his freedom once again. Benson is believed to be the first African-American to use the legal system to gain his freedom. John Dimery was a newly emancipated slave living in New Garden community. Dimery had been freed when his former master died. Dimery and his wife moved to the New Garden community. The sons of former master came to the New Garden community looking for Dimery. They planned to kidnap Dimery and return him to slavery. The men came at night to kidnap Dimery. Dimery instructed his daughter to “run for Mr. Coffin.” Vestal Coffin and fellow Quaker Isaac White caught up with the kidnappers and were able to detain the kidnappers. The women of the house untied Dimery. Dimery “disappeared into the woods.” Dimery was soon started on his journey to Richmond, Indiana and true freedom. Dimery worked for two years to earn enough money to send for his family. The plight of Benson and Dimery are thought to be the impetus behind the Vestal and Levi Coffin starting the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was not a railroad, but rather a means of transporting fugitive slaves to freedom in the northern states. John Dimery is believed to be the first “passenger” on the Underground Railroad.

Do dogs really know what we’re saying?

By saM MaZZOTTa PAW’S CORNER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Settle a bet for me. Can dogs really understand human speech? Or are they reacting to other signals when we give them commands (like a hand signal that’s repeated at the same time as the sound we make)? — Jerry in Seattle DEAR JERRY: You may have lost that bet. A study in 2016 found that dogs do indeed understand human speech, and that their brains process language in very much the same way that human brains do. The left side of a dog’s brain processes the meaning of the words being spoken, while the right side of the brain processes the emotional intent. Of course, this understanding worked mainly when words were used that the dogs were familiar with, like “good boy” and “well done.” And dogs responded most strongly when a familiar word was

matched with equal intent: for example, saying “good boy” in a way that clearly praises the dog. They also responded much better to praise than to criticism (and honestly, who wouldn’t)? If they didn’t understand the word being used, but the intent was clear, they responded — though not as enthusiastically. So yes, as any dog owner who has ever had to spell out the word W-A-L-K to keep their pet from dashing toward the leash will tell you, dogs do understand us. How can pet owners use this information to better relate to their dogs? It certainly can help when training a pet. Using positive praise, consistent words and keeping that training fun and happy will ensure that dogs learn faster and respond positively to commands. Try it out. Sorry, Democrats, your stars are Socialists By RICH LOWRy There was Bernie Sanders at a Fox News Channel town hall, not giving an inch in a forum every Democratic presidential candidate has shunned. His reward was a cataract of good reviews, and monster ratings. Sanders had a solid hour to try to reach people not favorably inclined to his worldview, at the very least demonstrating that he’s willing to show up outside his political silo. Why hadn’t any of the other Democrats done it before? Because they lacked the verve and ideological self-confidence of Sanders, as well as the independent streak to buck the Democratic Party’s attempt to hold the line against Fox. As a message candidate, Sanders is willing to take his anywhere. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, miraculously transformed into a relatively moderate Democratic elder stateswoman, has been pushing back against the notion that she leads a socialist party defined by a few radicals in the House. On “60 Minutes,” she stalwartly declared: “I do reject socialism as a economic system. If people have that view, that’s their view. That is not the view of the Democratic Party.” She dismissed the left wing in her caucus as “like, five people.” In sheer numbers this is true, but it’s the wrong way to count. The fact is that the most compelling stars of the party are self-declared socialists with a knack for generating controversy and media attention, and with committed mass followings. Pelosi might wish it weren’t true, but poll numbers, fundraising and follower counts don’t lie. Sanders is reliably second — sometimes first — in national and state presidential polling. He’s outraised everyone else in the field and, with his massive small-

donor base, probably can continue to do so for the duration. More than anyone else, he has defined the Democratic Party’s current agenda. It’ll be much harder to maintain that the Democratic Party isn’t socialist if it nominates one as its presidential candidate, which everyone paying attention realizes is a real possibility. If this happens, it won’t be the work of conservatives hoping to negatively brand the Democrats, but of the party’s faithful. The same goes for the prominence of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has been on the cover of Time magazine, Rolling Stone (with Nancy Pelosi), Hollywood Reporter and Bloomberg Businessweek. Annie Leibovitz photographed her for Vogue. She’s been interviewed by “60 Minutes.” She was among the top 10 House Democrats in fundraising the first quarter, and had the highest percentage of small donors (her ally, Ilhan Omar, also excelled). It’s obviously vexing to Pelosi to see a House majority built by the careful avoidance of ideological extravagance and won in marginal districts hijacked, at least in terms of public attention, by a few freshmen and a 77-year-old Vermont socialist. Yes, there are vast numbers of Democrats out there who aren’t on Twitter or Instagram. Maybe there are enough of them to nominate Joe Biden, or a Pete Buttigieg can win on a progressive platform clothed in a moderate demeanor. But the party’s stars will have something to say about it. The great Zionist Theodor Herzl maintained, “It is the simple and fantastic which leads men.” As Bernie Sanders showed, it’s also willing to go on Fox News.
