M.o.o.r.e spells encouragement By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com In her book Face to Face With God My Best Friend, author Terri L. Moore discusses how to be such good friends with God that you can talk to him intimately. It is written from a personal and professional perspective. In addition to being an author, Moore is a breakthrough coach and speaker. Her background has equipped her to help others. “My life has been a soap opera,” Moore admits. “Friends and others told me I should write a book.” Apparently they were right. The book was published in 2016 and by 2018 it had pushed her into the realm of a best-selling author. It is still selling today. Moore is working on her second book, a devotional titled Stories of Unstoppable Women. She currently conducts a Zoom class by the same name. Raised in Indiana, Moore’s early years were filled with tragedy. Her parents were alcoholics, she was

bullied in school and experienced domestic violence in her first marriage. Moore found herself turning to alcohol and selling drugs as a means to deal with life. In her late 20s, she was kidnapped in the parking lot of a shopping center and held at knifepoint. As she lied to her abductor trying to get out of the situation, she also prayed to God, saying she would turn her life over to Him if He would help her. The man let her go without further incident and was later apprehended by the police. But Moore did not forget her promise to God. “I ran into a high school friend who invited me to attend a Bible talk by her boyfriend,” Moore said. “I finally agreed to go to church with them.” That changed her life and she has been going to church for the past 33 years. Besides gaining a personal relationship with God, Moore’s association with church led her into a leadership role for a domestic violence shelter. During a fundraiser for domestic violence, the pastor shared data

about the problem and discussed the need for a shelter in the participants’ section of Indianapolis. He told Moore he felt she was called to head the project. “At the time, statistics showed that one in four women would be abused in their lifetime and 75 percent of children who witnessed domestic violence would become abusers themselves,” Moore said. “I could not sleep for days and invited the others who had been at the fundraiser (all of whom were victims of domestic violence) to discuss it. We felt it was a daunting task, but one that needed to be done.” Admitting she was petrified of public speaking, Moore was thrown into the position of conducting meetings and seeking grants to move the project forward. In 2009, the center opened in a warehouse that Moore’s husband Scott had renovated. From the day the center opened, Photo submitted Moore was called on to speak to An Internet description of Terri L. Discovering history by cleaning gravestones By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Cemeteries have been in existence for thousands of years. Many offer a record not only of the persons or families interred there but also of the history of the community. Deep River Friends Meeting Cemetery is one of the oldest in Guilford County. The earliest marked grave that can be read is that of P. Chipman, 1803, but the Meeting believes the original Burying Ground, beside the first Meeting House, built in 1758, is full of unmarked graves. Today,

that site is just a bare, grassy area, but ground impressions indicate gravesites. Early Quakers typically did not mark graves because they considered it prideful – a memorial to yourself – but later moved to plain fieldstone markers and then a marker with only the initials of the deceased. It wasn’t until the mid 1800s that the Yearly Meetings permitted more elaborate headstones containing the name of the Photos courtesy of Shawn Rogers deceased, dates of birth and death and Rogers reconstituted the broken age. An interesting feature of early Quaker grave markers is how dates were recorded. Early Quakers, or Friends, thought the names of days of months were non-Christian. So, January would become 1st month and if it were on a Wednesday, it would be 4th day. Unfortunately, many grave markers have weathered, naturally decayed, are poorly maintained, and sometimes vandalized. When this happens, history is lost. But there are dedicated people who take their own time to help preserve and restore these markers. Shawn Rogers is one of those people see gravestones, page 2

Budget, LDO amendments on Council agenda By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council has a full agenda for its May 18 meeting, including a public hearing to adopt the recommended fiscal year 2021-22 budget and Capital Improvement Plan as well as a second public hearing to consider amendments to the town’s Land Development Ordinance, including changes to zoning procedures, sign regulations and other changes to comply with Chapter 160D of the North Carolina general statutes. The Council held a special meeting May 7 to discuss the proposed amendments. In addition, the Council will consider approval of a capital project ordinance for a new Recreation Maintenance Facility. Also on the agenda is a presentation on the Town’s current code enforcement status, a subject that has been before the Council for several months.

At the April meeting, the Council voted to oppose General Assembly HB401/ SB349 which would strip local governments of the authority to regulate residential zoning by requesting that municipalities permit “middle housing” such as townhomes, duplexes, triplexes and quadplexes to be permitted “by right” within single-family detached housing districts. This month, the Council is expected to approve a resolution in opposition to House Bill 496. This bill calls for a constitutional amendment changing terms for legislators from two years to four years. Following the regular session, the Council will go into closed session to discuss a personnel matter. The Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center. The public is invited to attend but the meeting will be live-streamed at www. youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

Can you pass this North Carolina history test?

Finally, after 50 years, on May 20, 1825, Charlotte held its first celebration of the anniversary of the event. When Jefferson’s letters were published in 1829, his “spurious” description prompted loyal North Carolinians to stand up for the validity of their state’s early version of a declaration of independence. In 1831, the state legislature established a special committee to settle what had become known as the Mecklenburg Controversy. The committee, after an investigation that

included interviews with 13 eyewitnesses to the events of May 1775, concluded that the Meck Dec was genuine and that it was incumbent “to usher to the world the Mecklenburg Declaration, accompanied with such testimonials of its genuineness, as shall silence incredulity…[and] forever secure it from being forgotten.” The committee’s report did not end the controversy, but its sanction gave credibility and cover to the state’s official embrace of the Meck Dec and 150 years of bragging about our “First in Freedom” status. Syfert observed that after years of big celebrations that attracted American presidents, interest had waned. Why was so little known and reported about the Mecklenburg Declaration before 1819? And why, after more than 150 years of attention, did interest in the Meck Dec wane? see history, page 2

gravestones continued from front and he has been working for several months on gravestones at Deep River Friends Meeting. Rogers, who has a masters degree in historic preservation and heritage interpretation, got his start at Deep River reconsolidating a broken stone for a member of the Horney family. A family member provided funding for the cleaning materials and Rogers also offered to clean some of the adjoining stones. “I’ve only done an initial cleaning on those,” Rogers said. “I haven’t even finished them. “I don’t touch a stone unless I get permission. I like to get permission from descendants in case someone comes back and says, ‘We like that they’re old and crusty.’ But if I can’t find an heir or a stone is illegible, that’s a different story.” Just a glance over the grounds of Deep River Friends Cemetery is enough to see which stones Rogers has worked on. The whiteness of these stones stands in contrast to the dull gray or almost black majority of stones. “A small stone could take two weeks to two months to do,” Rogers said. “There are a number of variables.” Cleaning is necessary to remove growth, dirt, stains and other issues. Removing

a substance like lichen can prolong the life of a gravestone because the lichen eats into the stone. Lichen’s byproduct is basically acidic and it will actually etch the stone like someone sandblasted it,” Rogers said of the damage done by nature. Rain and other precipitation deposit pollution on grave markers, resulting in discoloration and sometimes breakdown of the stone itself. Other climate problems like light, humidity, temperature shifts and wind all have an affect on the markers. Even frequent watering of the grass in a cemetery could cause damage. “People don’t understand that stone is porous, it’s like a sponge. When it freezes, water expands and [the stone] begins to crack.” Rogers is not able to take on the task of cleaning the stones on a full-time basis because he is director of the Mendenhall Homeplace in Jamestown. He has been able to probe the ground and find headstones and footstones at Deep River that have fallen and covered by years of dirt. Some of the headstones have been broken, whether by vandalism, mowers, or other reasons. Before he starts cleaning, he resets any stones that have fallen or are

Do not damage gravestone to make a rubbing

continued from front

Making rubbings of gravestones is an old tradition but Shawn Rogers is not in favor of the practice. Rogers, a gravestone conservator, said one process that could be used to get a rubbing is put aluminum foil over the stone and rub it into the impressions. Damage to the stone would be minimal but Rogers still doesn’t recommend it. Do not use chalk, shaving cream, flour, crayons, etc. to highlight lettering on the stone. He also doesn’t like to use any kind of materials that come into direct contact with the stone, except distilled or filtered water. “You want the sun behind you,” he said. “When you spray a stone with a mist of water, and look at it at an angle, if you can’t read it, you can’t read it [no matter what you do].” Also, keep in mind that some cemeteries frown on rubbings because they could damage the stone. broken using materials recommended by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior. He has found several that had been mended previously using mortar containing Portland cement, a totally inappropriate impervious material when used against the porous gravestones, but probably applied originally with good intentions. Rogers uses different strengths of epoxy. “The binding agent has to be weaker than the stone,” Rogers said, “yet strong enough to hold it together.” He has also found several stones that had once been cleaned with bleach or vinegar, both of which have been used to clean in the past by amateurs. These products are caustic and soak into stones, breaking down the stone’s mineral composition. Some of these stones now have a reddish or greenish tint from iron or copper seeping out. Rogers also uses NPSapproved materials and techniques to clean the gravestones. “The first rule of preservation is ‘do no harm,’” Rogers said. “So oftentimes, the very best thing you can do is absolutely nothing.” One good cleaning will not last forever. It is important to maintain the stones to keep family and community history alive. “I could spend another 10 years out here and not finish all of them,” Rogers said,

GUILFORD MEMORIAL PARK

“and by the time I finish I’d have to start over.” Rogers’ interest is peaked when he reveals the writing on stones, making him want to research the person. He often reaches out to descendants he finds to show them what he has done to the marker. During a tour last year put on by the Historic Jamestown Society, Rogers was able to steer a tour member across the street to where her family home was, just through his research on the family. Rogers would like to work on the little graveyard beside the Meeting House in City Lake Park. This graveyard contains many unmarked graves and as well as those of African-Americans. It was not a part of the Meeting House, since that congregation was an “indulged” meeting, basically meaning a satellite meeting place of Deep River Friends. Contrary to what many believe, not all the graves at Deep River Friends belong to Quakers and there is even one section that contains graves of African Americans, probably slaves.

week public speaking class lead by her pastor helped her overcome her fear of talking in front of people as she began to offer messages of faith, hope and healing. After receiving numerous calls about abused pets, Moore approached the shelter’s board about starting a foster pet program for abused animals. The result was Lilly’s Lighthouse Foster Pet Program, named after Moore’s pet dog. The program was so successful that others soon began copying it. Moore resigned her position on the board of the domestic violence facility in 2017, but during the time she was associated with it the facility was able to serve over 7,000 people. The executive coach who helped with the board had approached Moore about expanding her talents. “She said she saw me as being a speaker, empowerment coach, workshop

facilitator, radio talkshow host and best-selling author,” Moore said. “Her encouragement led me to go to school to become a certified breakthrough coach who helps people out of their past problems and into the future.” Thinking to semi-retire, Moore and her husband moved to Jamestown in October 2020. It did not take long, however for them to assimilate into the community. They became active at Piedmont Triad Church of Christ and Terri joined the Jamestown Business and Guilford Merchants associations to enhance her opportunity for speaking engagements, book signings and breakthrough clients. “I am available to help anyone who needs a monumental breakthrough,” Moore said. “My four-step program gets results.” To find Moore’s book, look at https://www.amazon.com/author/terrimoore.

continued from front Syfert dealt with these two questions. He also lays out the facts, pro and con, so readers can form their own conclusions about the Meck Dec. Syfert says he began his research a believer, but became a skeptic as he reviewed the many challenges to its authenticity. Finally, however, all the evidence convinced him that the story of its adoption was true. Thanks in part to Syfert’s book, Charlotte is celebrating the declaration again, in a big way. At noon on May 20 on Tryon Street in the center of Charlotte, military and colonial reenactors, horses, military parades, and cannon firings will accompany patriotic speeches. A big dinner with special beverages from

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery is already sold out. On Sunday May 23, a massive bike ride to various historic locations in Charlotte will commemorate Captain James Jack’s 450-mile horseback ride to deliver the Mecklenburg Declaration to Congress. Next time you notice that May 20, 1775 date on our flag, you can think, “Now I know the rest of the story.”

Get creative with cow-print lampshade

Good Housekeeping CHERRY PORK CHOPS

Boneless pork loin chops cook quickly, and since they have no bones, it’s easy to cut off all the excess fat. Fruit always goes nicely with pork — and here we used some of the season’s early cherries to make our special sauce.

By donnA eRiCkSon DONNA'S DAY: CREATIVE FAMILY FUN When sprucing up your home for spring, think twice before tossing out a tired-looking, plain-white lampshade and spending money on a new one. You and your school-age kids can brighten it up and give it new life with the miracle of acrylic paint and decorative trim or ribbon. Dream up and paint any designs you like, or give “cow prints” a try. The black shapes are simple for beginners to draw and paint on a lampshade, plus the fun cow-spot look is versatile for a range of decorating styles. While providing a delightful accent to the most contemporary decor, they also add a fresh pop to an easy country style. And if there’s a new baby in the house, the spotted lampshade whimsically accentuates a barnyard theme in the nursery. Since newborns are attracted to black-and-white shapes, this shade will be a favorite with baby from the start. Here’s what you’ll need: Cleaned used or inexpensive standard, plain-white lampshade without pleats Acrylic paint from crafts stores in black or in the color you prefer for the spots Pencil Newspaper Paintbrush Decorative fringe, trim or ribbon to fit around the bottom edge of the shade with a slight overlap Glue gun

3/4 pound green beans Salad oil Salt 1/2 pound dark sweet cherries 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 4 (about 4 ounces each) 1-inch-thick boneless pork loin chops 1/4 cup cherry-juice cocktail, or cranberry-raspberry juice 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon beef-flavor instant bouillon

Cow-print lampshade and pillows Here’s the fun: 1. You might want to start the project with your kids by looking at photos of cows, paying particular attention to various sizes and shapes of their spots. Practice sketching a few spots on paper with a pencil. On a newspaper-covered work surface, fill in the practice spots using paint and a paintbrush. Once you get the hang of it, begin sketching and painting on the lampshade, going from top to bottom. Let dry. 2. An adult should carefully glue the fringe or ribbon in place around the bottom rim of the shade. Let dry. Place on your lamp base.

Extra-bright ideas: If your kids want to make more cow prints, look around for other decorating items that could be embellished, such as a picture frame, a removable cover of a plain fabric throw pillow, a clay flowerpot or a wastepaper basket. 1. Trim ends from green beans. In 3-quart saucepan over high heat, in 1 tablespoon very hot salad oil, cook green beans and 1/2 teaspoon salt until green beans begin to brown, stirring frequently. Add 1/2 cup water and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cook, covered, until beans are tender, about 3 minutes. Drain; remove green beans to warm large platter; keep warm. 2. Meanwhile, remove pits from cherries; cut each cherry in half. In cup, combine pepper, thyme and 1 teaspoon salt; rub pork loin chops with herb mixture. 3. In nonstick 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat, in 1 tablespoon hot salad oil, cook pork chops 10 minutes or until still slightly pink in the center but juices run clear when pierced with a knife, turning chops once halfway through. Remove to platter with green beans. 4. In measuring cup, combine cherry juice, brown sugar, vinegar, cornstarch, bouillon and 1/4 cup water. Add cherry-juice mixture and cherries to drippings in skillet; over high heat, heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; simmer 3 minutes to blend flavors. Serve sauce over pork.
