Board approves GTCC rezoning By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com GTCC is one step closer to increasing the physical diversity of its campus, this time as potential commercial development. On May 10, the Jamestown Planning Board unanimously approved a rezoning request for approximately 3.35 acres of the school’s property at 6014 and 6016 W. Gate City Boulevard from Civic (CIV) to Conditional Zoning/Commercial (CZ-C). This mostly wooded property is in front of their Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) building, which is within Jamestown’s corporate limits, and adjoins the complex containing the Sheetz station. The property was part of the Daimler Bus facility before

GTCC’s purchase in 2013 and had the zoning changed from Industrial to Civic. GTCC is looking for businesses that would be interested in building on the property but do not have commitments from any as of now. During the public hearing, no one spoke in opposition. While the Board approved the rezoning request, it did note that it was inconsistent with the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. Effective Oct. 1, 2017, state law has changed regarding the adoption of “consistency statements” when amending zoning ordinances. “Boards are not required to take action that is consistent with an adopted Land Development Plan (aka – Comprehensive Plan or “Comp” Plan),” said Matthew Johnson, planning director.

“They only need to consider what it says.” However, the Planning Board and Town Council must adopt a statement that notes consistency or inconsistency. Board member Cara Arena read a “motion to approve even if inconsistent” statement, noting the request meets the development needs of the community, was reasonable and is in the public interest. By approving the motion, the Board also recommended that the Town Council amend the Land Development Plan (Comprehensive Plan) to reflect the approved zoning amendment. The plan is currently being updated and this will be taken into account. GTCC’s rezoning request will go before the Town Council for a Photo courtesy Town of Jamestown public hearing on July 12. The red outlines indicate the two parcels at 6014 and 6016 W. Gate City Boulevard for which GTCC is requesting rezoning.

Iddings House a part of Jamestown history By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com (The following is an update of a story that appeared in the Jamestown News in 2008.) Mark Iddings inherited property from his Quaker father where his house, GTCC, Christine Joyner Greene Education Center and Millis Road Elementary are now located. More property may have been involved, 158 acres total. Jonathan Howell, Mark’s grandfather, originally owned the land. The younger Iddings and his wife Elizabeth built the house, using a rock in the foundation dated 1783. The inscription is still visible, but the rock probably dates from an earlier house on the property which stood northwest of the current house. Some references call this the Armfield house, but that is a mistake, according to Shelly Lutzweiler, retired associate professor of speech and communications at GTCC. One of the Iddings’ daughters married an Armfield but never lived in the house after marriage. As an “overseer” of the road, Iddings used the house, in part, as a stop

and tavern on a stagecoach route from Petersburg, Va., to Salisbury. The lower part of the house, on the east side, was used as the tavern, while the family lived in the two-story part and also allowed stage riders to stay overnight if needed. Across what is now East Main Street, in the area where the Greene Education Center is located, Iddings kept a barn and stable. He probably kept relay horses for the stage there, as well as horses for his farming operations. “They (the Iddings family) would have been of a little more means than most people,” said Lutzweiler in 2008. The house is about 2,000 square feet in area. “Actually for that time period, this was a pretty nice house.” It was extensively renovated in the 1950s. The original porch on the front of the house was two stories tall, with a door at the second level. Later owners closed over the second-floor door and widened the porch, but most recent renovations returned the porch to the smaller size and added a second story window. The charm of the house, for many, is the interior. see history, page 2

Iddings House undergoing restoration at GTCC The white house, built around 1825, sits incongruously in front of the modern buildings of Guilford Technical Community College, on the heavily traveled East Main Street. The college is a large part of the education system in the county. But the Mark Iddings house carries a very important history in the Jamestown area and now, that history is being preserved as GTCC is renovating the house. “The house had gotten unstable,” said Mitchell Johnson, GTCC vice president of operations and facilities, noting structural problems. “The renovations that had

been done in the past made it more modern [but] actually damaged the house as far as structural instability. We’re taking it back not for the majority of its life but the time when it was a tavern to turn-of-the-century style.” All original hardware latches, knobs and hinges on the doors will be restored and replaced in the house. The school relied heavily on Shelly Lutzweiler for the house’s history before she retired as associate professor of speech and communications at GTCC. “I want to complement her for her unwavering commitment and efforts. This absolutely would not be happening if not for her,” Johnson said. The house is on its original foundation, an oddity for

GTCC (then Guilford Technical Institute) acquired the property in 1974 from Guilford County and Johnson said the deed requires

the school to keep up the Iddings House in perpetuity. The school received several grants for the restoration and hired structural engineers to investigate what needed to be done. The remainder of the cost will come out of the county operating budget for build-

ing maintenance. “Before she retired, Ms. Lutzweiler was able to get a rather large grant of $100,000,” Johnson said, adding they have received another grant of $10,000. Grants come through the GTCC Foundation, Inc. A wall was replaced

coNtiNued from froNt Dark, low ceiling timbers and walls make the large room at the entrance rather gloomy. Lutzxwiler said the walls would have been painted white. Low doorways cause visitors to duck. “Mark Iddings must have been short,” said Lutzweiler, who, at 5’6”, clears the doorway with about 4 inches to spare. All original hardware latches, knobs, and hinges are on the doors. A large fireplace between the two rooms was probably a see-through fireplace at one time, but it was shored up with brick during renovations. Large rocks form the foundation for the fireplace. At one time, the large room downstairs was divided into three rooms, but is currently in its original configuration. A feature of those extra rooms are what Lutzweiler called “the most famous doors in Guilford County.” Now used upstairs, these doors are hand-made with an odd lozenge, or

diamond, shape design across the center, the horizontal lock-rail. Several years ago, Lutzweiler interviewed two sisters who had lived in the house in the 1930s and learned that there had been an opening to the cellar in the main room and a fireplace upstairs. There is no evidence of either now. A kitchen was added, probably in the 1930s and a back porch in the 1950s. “For the age of the house, it’s in very good condition,” said Lutzweiler. It had been used as a residence for doctors, teachers, and school staff for years and GTCC used to hold socials and receptions in the house. It was once office space and storage for the drama department.” When the house passed out of the Iddings family, H. Albion Millis of High Point bought the house at auction for $4,325. He sold it to the J.E. Latham Co. which, in 1922, deeded it

to the Guilford County Commissioners for $10. The property was used for the Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanitorium from 1924-55. In 1974 the county deeded the property and house to GTCC (then Guilford Technical Institute) for $10 with the stipulation that the trustees maintain the house for “the purpose of preserving said residence’s historical significance in the county” in perpetuity. “I would like to see it put on the National Register of Historic Places,” said Lutzweiler. “I was told by several people that we could have it on there tomorrow if we wanted.” As of now, there are no plans to list it. However, the historical significance of the Mark Iddings house as well as the property surrounding it, obviously played a large part in the history of the Jamestown area. In addition, Iddings’ grandfather the was brother-in-law of James Mendenhall, for whom the town of Jamestown was named.

chartered as part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NC on May 10 of that year. Its first full club year ran from September 1961 to May 1962. The organization has grown to over 100 women who assist many other nonprofits by providing volunteer time and finances. Most of the groups they help are local, but some include state and international organizations. They fall under five categories, including arts and culture, civic engagement, education and libraries, environment, and health and wellness. GFWC-NC will celebrate its 120th anniversary next year. Diverse in age, interests and experiences, members are united by a desire to create positive change in their communities. Crystal O’Neal, GFWCNC president, shared a brief history of the General Federation of Women Clubs, of which all North Carolina clubs, including SWC, are a part. GFWC was founded in 1890 when 63 women’s clubs throughout the United States attended a convention in New York City and officially organized by ratifying a constitution. Fran Pollock, SWC member and president of District IV, encouraged everyone to be willing to volunteer at district and state levels. “That is how you learn,”

Biden’s reelection campaign What is going on? President Joe Biden is on primetime television almost every day. He looks into the camera directly, seriously, and calmly explaining the country’s challenges and possible solutions. He has a near monopoly on network news coverage and the non-Fox cable news/opinion chanBy d.G. MARtin nels. oNe oN oNe The free news coverage is priceless. Ask former President Donald Trump. He could tell you how coverage of his rallies and his use of social media gave him a unique edge in his two runs for the presidency. Democrats and progressives are loading up paid TV message ads that promote Biden’s programs and portray him as calm, cool, collected, competent, and healthy. Certainly, this media campaign is designed to secure and sustain public support for Biden and his proposed economic recovery legislation. Also, it is certainly designed to bolster Democratic chances in the 2022 mid-term congressional elections. Still, with Biden everywhere, you could believe that the 2024 presidential campaign has begun. And Biden is running hard. I remember thinking during the 2020 Trump-Biden contest that Biden, at 78 years old when he took office, would only be a “bridge” president. After beating Trump, he would, at age 82 in 2024, step aside for a younger Democratic candidate who would secure his legacy. It might be Vice President Kamala Harris or another popular senator, governor, or other high office holder. The problem with this scenario is illustrated by the losing campaigns of Al Gore, Bill Clinton’s vice president, in 2000 and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama’s first term secretary of state, in 2016. Neither Gore nor Hillary Clinton could win an Electoral College victory, even though Bill Clinton and Obama, arguably, would have won reelection had they been permitted to run. Will Biden really run again? Here is what he said at his first news conference as president, “My plan is to run for reelection. That’s my expectation.” But he also said, “I’m a great respecter of fate. I’ve See Biden, Page 4

continued from front beam to split,” Johnson said. Unique lozenge or diamondshape doors were brought back downstairs for the bedrooms. The stairs that had been added to the second floor were removed. “The second floor was basically a sleeping loft for the kids,” Johnson said, rather than bedrooms created during a 1950s renovation. He said steep steps, like a ladder on a ship, would have been used. That “ladder” is being restored. Outside, workers found the siding was in poor shape and had lead paint on it. Johnson said the school decided not to fix it since it was not original, but instead use new durable Hardie board siding. The asphalt shingles are being replaced by cedar shake. One thing motorists might notice is that there are now two doors fac-

ing East Main Street, rather than the one they’re most familiar with. The “new” door on the east side of the building led to a room Iddings used as a tavern. The stone step had remained even though the door was converted to a window. GTCC would like to find furniture that was original to the house or historically-accurate furniture. The school is also planning informational signs in the house and the possibility of a historical highway marker along East Main Street. Johnson is not entirely certain what the Iddings House will be used for when renovation is complete in June, perhaps teaching history or tours. Current codes do not allow a large group of people to occupy the building at one time and it is not handicapped accessible.

But he seems to be preserving the option to change his mind. Whether or not he runs again, Biden has been running for president most of his life. Some remember a North Carolina connection to his decadeslong series of presidential candidacies. Mayor Russell Knox and College Union director Shaw Smith came to meet Biden and hear him talk about a run for president some day. I lost that congressional election, but we learned that Biden was energetic and focused, traits that will serve him again if he runs in 2024.

race was close. Lots of senators and members of Congress came to campaign with me. I loved hobnobbing with famous political personages like Jim Wright, Claude Pepper and Charles Rangel—and future presidential candidates Bill Bradley, Dick Gephardt, and Gary Hart. But these visits often drove our campaign volunteers crazy trying to figure out how to readjust our campaign schedule, develop an “appropriate” program for them, and gather respectable crowds to greet them. One of these visitors was Senator Joe Biden, then in his mid-40’s. His staff gave our campaign scheduler Marcia Webster only a day or two to prepare. Couch Theatre By AMy AndeRSon The catalog of films available to watch on any given platform is immense. Some days I feel like I spend more time with the TV guide and movie menu than I do actually watching a movie. When you just aren’t sure what to watch, you can draw inspiration to guide you to a new discovery. For example, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and there is a wonderful selection of films starring or directed by entertainers from this background. Here are a few to get you started: Crazy Rich Asians — A regular gal, Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), joins her

seemingly normal longtime boyfriend on a trip to his best friend’s wedding — and back home to meet his family. Henry Goulding plays Nick Young, the boyfriend in question — considerate, elegant, with a six-pack that won’t stop. What Rachel doesn’t know is that Nick’s family is, well, crazy rich, and the couple is greeted with nonstop elaborate displays of ostentatiousness as soon as they hit Singapore. Michelle Yeoh plays Nick’s disapproving mother, and comedy relief comes from Rachel’s college friend Peik Lin, played by a hilarious Awkwafina, along with Ken Jeong, as Peik Lin’s dad. Give jars in bloom to thank a teacher By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun As the school year winds down, it’s time to show appreciation to a special teacher. Here’s a springy idea: Arrange a casual bouquet of flowers with offshoots of your child’s creativity. First, choose some flowers and greens, such as hosta leaves and herbs for fragrance from your garden, or purchase a bouquet at your market. Let your child trim the stems, loosely arrange the blooms and greens in his hand, and then head for the recycle bin. The perfect “vase” for the blooms just may be lurking between a milk carton and yesterday’s newspaper. I’m thinking pint-size pasta-sauce jars, but any

glass pickle, mayonnaise or fruit jar makes a casual and charming “jar in bloom.” Simply wash with soapy water, remove the label, tie twine around the rim, and set the bouquet inside. Add some water and a card, and it’s ready to give. It’s also fun for kids to decorate and personalize the jars before adding the flowers. Here are some handmade arty ideas using nontoxic paint pens, ribbon, wire, beads or anything that catches your child’s attention in your craft box. Compose a jingle or rhyme about the teacher receiving the bouquet and write it on the jar with paint pens. Tie ribbon around the rim and thread a few small beads near the ends of the ribbon to dangle on the jar. Use acrylic paints to paint designs or images of the

teachers’ favorite things. Simply write a thankyou greeting directly on the jar with paint pens, and then finish it off with copper wire twisted around the neck of the bottle several times. Arrange a curly willow branch and two or three flowers in the modern vase. Extra idea: Painted and decorated jars make attractive containers for displaying kids’ summer camp and vacation nature finds. Write the place and date directly on the jar with paint pens and fill with pretty rocks from a lake in Wisconsin, mini pinecones from a woodland walk in Oregon or sand from a beach in Florida.

On a crisp spring morning in a sunlit garden, the Cedarwood Garden Club held its May meeting. The featured “Spotlight” was member Eddie Fuselier who gave interesting highlights of his family and his career from Louisiana to North Carolina. After the business session, the club inducted officers for the 2021-2022 year.
