Get out for a tour of Jamestown area By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

Feeling a little cabin fever right about now? Why not get in your car and take the family on a little excursion around Jamestown looking for historical markers? The historically rich Jamestown area, settled in the late 1700s, making it older than either Greensboro or High Point, can be studied by following a roughly 11-mile route with 16 informational markers. The list includes some little-known facts about several Confederate arms factories and an armory, as well as the

popular Mendenhall-related buildings, Oakdale Road structures and the “Yellow House” (Shubal Coffin House) on Main Street. Also included are markers remembering Beard’s Hat Shop, the Reece House, the Potter House, Jamestown Public School, Deep River Friends Meeting and the RobbinsHolton Mill and House. Unfortunately, several of the original buildings are no longer standing, but the historical markers serve as reminders of their past importance to the community. The State of North Carolina, Division of Archives and History, erected the Beard’s

Hat Shop and Deep River Friends markers. The Colonel John Sloan Camp #1290, Sons of Confederate Veterans erected both Confederate Arms markers and the Florence Armory marker. The Historic Jamestown Society erected the remaining signs. According to the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, “The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program [is] one of the oldest such programs in continuous operation in the United States. Our highway markers program has been providing passers-by with SEE TOUR, PAGe 4

Taking a punch

Doing the same thing – differently By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com In January, Erin Betlej, head of contemporary worship and college/ young adult ministries at Jamestown United Methodist Church, decided to reach beyond church walls to connect with the community as well as to church members. She started Community Coffee Hours on Wednesday mornings at the Blue House Bakery on East Main Street. There she chatted with people of all ages who stopped by her table. “Part of my work is pastoral care and I thought it would be good to get out and meet the public and also support a local business,” Betlej said. “Jamestown has a wonderful downtown area and I wanted to be supportive of it and present in the community.” Some people came to the “coffee meetings” for counseling and advice or to share prayer concerns. Others just wanted to discuss something mentioned during the Sunday morning worship service. They stayed anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or so.

“There was only one time that no one showed up.” Betlej said. “Most weeks we had two-four people overlapping. It was fascinating to be able to introduce church members who had never met.” After meeting at the bakery for two and a half months, however, COVID-19 put a new spin on Betlej’s ministry. Now called Coffee With Erin, she is meeting with interested persons on Zoom each Wednesday at 9 a.m. Online participants average from one to three people. “Most of what we are discussing now is dealing with the pandemic,” Betlej said. “It is a way to connect with people and allow them to still feel safe. It offers a sense of normalcy and people can feel part of a bigger community even through we are apart.” Betlej noted that the people showing up online are different than the ones who came for coffee in person. If she forgets to open a Zoom meeting, they message her to find out why. Betlej feels that even after churches open their doors again, they will still need to keep an online presence

for older adults and those with autoimmune problems. “We are a church in transition,” she said. “We have the opportunity to meet people where they are. I think our church will continue online contact in some way,” In addition to Coffee With Erin, JUMC offers many online opportunities including Sunday morning worship services and “Staff Moments” on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. On Friday and Saturday evenings at 5 p.m. a story time for children can be seen on You Tube. “I have a good friend in Tennessee whose daughters watch the story time,” Betlej said. “All our online connections have been very well received. The feedback is that people find it good to see our faces. It provides a sense of comfort.” Betlej hopes to be able to meet people from the community and church members in person again once businesses open. “I wear my name badge so people realize I am a minster,” she said. The meeting ID for Betlej’s Zoom meetings is 290-290-0290.

VIRUS TAKES TOLL ON GOLF COURSE The May 6 Jamestown News reported that rounds played at Jamestown Park Golf Course this past March were down approximately 200 percent from March 2019. The information received was incorrect, according to Ross Sanderlin, Golf and Recreation Director. The actual rounds played were over 2,000, which is actually a slight increase over the previous year.

The coronavirus has made Zoom meetings, Facetime and other online connections more popular than ever as a way to stay in touch with others.

“And he can take a punch.” A former colleague was describing John Gleeson, who popped into the news last week when U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan appointed him to an unusual assignment. Judge Sullivan presided over the prosecution of retired General Michael Flynn for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After the judge accepted Flynn’s By d.G. MARTIN guilty plea, it became his responsiONe ON ONe bility to impose the sentence. But before sentencing took place, Attorney General William Barr directed Justice Department lawyers to move for Sullivan to dismiss all charges against Flynn, explaining that, based on a new review, Flynn had not committed the crimes to which he had pled guilty. Sullivan is on the spot. He had accepted Flynn’s guilty plea and arguably has the power and responsibility to move forward with the sentencing. On the other hand, ordinarily if a prosecutor determines that a defendant is innocent and asks for the charges to be dropped, a judge would be accommodating. Not necessarily this time, thought Judge Sullivan. Before he decides to dismiss the charges against Flynn or move forward with sentencing, he wants to hear arguments against Barr’s and Flynn’s assertion that no crime was committed. John Gleeson, a former federal judge and, before that, a prosecutor of New York mobsters, is the man Judge Sullivan chose to make those arguments. Who is this man who will be confronting the combined forces of Flynn’s attorneys, Barr’s Justice Department, and President Donald Trump? As a federal prosecutor Gleeson led the successful effort to finally convict mobster John Gotti in 1992. According to a May 14 article in The New York Times, Gordon Mehler, Gleeson’s co-worker during that time said, “There was a feeling among our generation of prosecutors that John was a rock star. He was super smart, but also incredibly hardworking. “And he could take a punch.” Learning about Gleeson, I realized how important it is

The High Point Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (HPMPO) is responsible for transportation planning and managing federal transportation funding for the region. The HPMPO region covers almost 700 square miles and includes the municipalities of High Point, Archdale, Trinity, Jamestown, Wallburg, Thomasville, Lexington and Denton. Also included are portions of Guilford, Davidson, Forsyth, and Randolph counties. The HPMPO is kicking off the public review process for the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP). HPMPO staff are preparing to update the plan for the 2045 timeframe. An essential part of this plan is learning what people think of transportation today and how it should serve us in the future. The 2045 MTP will look at the challenges and issues over the next 25-years. Key factors used to develop this plan include regional goals, projected population, job growth, transportation demand and public input. The HPMPO needs to know how people view the current transportation system as well as learn about people’s ideas for future improvements. Go online to the High Point MPO website and view the existing 2040 MTP at https://www.highpointnc. gov/287/Metropolitan-Transportation-Plan-MTP. The public review and comment period for the DRAFT MTP will take place this summer with adoption anticipated to take place in August. Given the current situation with the COVID 19 pandemic, inperson meetings will not be held until we are approved to do so. All information will be provided through the MPO website and on social media. As we move forward in the planning process there will be opportunities to present our Draft 2045 MTP to the public either in person or through video conferencing. Those meeting times and locations will be advertised through local media, on our website, and on social media. All information will be provided in an alternative form if requested. in residential real property containing less than 15 rental units that is being sold in a foreclosure proceeding under Article 2A of Chapter 45 of the General Statutes may terminate the rental agreement for the dwelling unit after receiving notice pursuant to G.S. 45-21.17(4) by providing the landlord with a written notice of termination to be effective on a date stated in the notice of termination that is at least 10 days, but no more than 90 days, after the sale date contained in the notice of sale, provided that the mortgagor has not cured the default at the time the tenant provides the notice of termination. Upon termination of a rental agreement under this section, the tenant is liable for the rent due under the rental agreement prorated to the effective date of the termination payable at the time that would have been required by the terms of the rental agreement. The tenant is not liable for any other rent or damages due only to the early termination of the tenancy. If you are a tenant and have any questions about your legal rights, please consult an attorney. Although not required by statute, any and all bidders and purchasers at sale should understand that the property described in the subject foreclosure proceeding may or may not contain a structure of any kind. The Substitute Trustee in this matter makes no representation or warranty as to the type or existence of a structure situated on the subject property or whether or not said structure has been affixed in any way. Likewise, Substitute Trustee makes no warranties or representations of any kind as to whether title to the mobile/manufactured home(s) on the subject property, if any, has been properly cancelled or whether there are any outstanding liens thereon.

Said property will be sold subject to taxes, including all transfer taxes associated with the foreclosure, assessments, and any superior easements, rights of way, restrictions of record, liens, or other encumbrances prior to the lien of the deed of trust being foreclosed, said sale to remain open for increased bids for ten (10) days after report thereof to the Clerk of Superior Court. In the event the debtor files a bankruptcy petition prior to the expiration of the 10-day period required by G.S. 45-21.27, an automatic stay of the foreclosure will be imposed in accordance with the Bankruptcy Code (11 U.S.C. §362) and the bidder must pursue relief through the bankruptcy court.

The Substitute Trustee may require the high bidder to deposit cash at the sale in an amount equal to the greater of five percent (5%) of the amount of the bid or $750.00. If no upset bid is filed, the balance of the purchase price, less deposit, must be made in cash upon tender of the deed. Third party purchasers at sale must pay the tax of Forty-Five Cents ($0.45) per One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) as required by NCGS 7A-308(a)(1).

continued from front ‘history on a stick’ since 1935. “Markers commemorate historically significant statewide places, people and events, and cover an array of subjects including schools, churches, battles, generals, artists, poets, preachers, musicians and civil rights.” Why is our past important to us now? Well, for the Town of Jamestown, if it were not for James Mendenhall receiving a Granville Grant in the mid 1700s, he might not have moved along the Deep River. It was his son, George, who named the new town after his father. A marker for James Mendenhall’s house and mill is on Penny Road at the High Point City Lake bridge. The arms factories produced guns for families to hunt for food, as well as for protection. These “Jamestown Rifles” are widely known as excellent firearms. Perhaps it was this reason that the Confederacy purchased a number of guns from our local arms factories, even though the area was a Quaker settlement. Quakers are known as pacifists. It has also been said that staying home to fabricate guns allowed men to avoid conscription. So, load up the kiddies and significant others and take a ride around the Jamestown area. It will be good to get out of the house –

and educational as well. And not only that – once the Jamestown Public Library (Jamestown School) and Mendenhall Homeplace and others reopen, they would be excellent places to visit to learn more about the history of the area. to be able to take a punch. I thought about a long list of people I admire, who after taking a hard punch in the gut, were able to work through the experience and turn it into a positive. Gary Pearce’s 2010 biography of former Governor Jim Hunt told one of my favorite stories about how taking a punch can lead to important accomplishments. In the 1964 governor’s race, the ambitious Hunt worked hard for Richardson Preyer, hoping to gain an important position in Preyer’s administration. Preyer’s loss ended that hope. Later in the year, Hunt flunked the bar exam, postponing his aspiration to practice law. That double punch in the gut led to his leaving North Carolina for a two-year stint as an economic advisor in Nepal. He worked at a high level to develop an economic plan for the entire nation. Hunt says, “I learned to get a big view of a country… What you have to do to develop a nation-the importance of educating people, providing infrastructure like roads, electricity, banks.” His time in Nepal made him more pragmatic and less ideological. “It isn’t just a

matter of dividing the pie. You can grow the pie. That’s a fundamental thing to know.” When Pearce’s book first came out, I wrote, “My theory, based on Pearce’s short description of the Nepal experience, is that it, as much as anything else, set Hunt apart. If Richardson Preyer had won or Jim Hunt had passed the bar exam, Hunt would have missed Nepal. His life and North Carolina history would have made for a much different story from the one Gary Pearce tells so well.” Hunt’s ability to take a punch and come back stronger made North Carolina a better place. Hopefully, Gleeson’s proven ability to take one will serve the public similarly. One thing for sure, if he challenges the forces of the president, those punches will come hard and fast.
