Seven from Ragsdale sign letters to attend college By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com It was a full table at Ragsdale High School on May 15 as seven senior student-athletes signed letters of intent to attend college. Four of the students are featured here, with three featured in next week’s issue. Athletic Director Brian Herndon introduced each of the players, but broke down near the end as he said this would be his last signing before he retires. Although Herndon will no longer be athletic director, there is no denying that he has been the school’s strongest cheerleader. ARTURO CAMPOS Arturo Campos applied to three colleges but select-

ed one close to home, Guilford College. He will play soccer for the Quakers. “I chose Guilford because my best friend goes there,” Campos said. “Also the coach is a really cool guy.” During the times he has visited his friend, Campos has also met most of the soccer team. While at Guilford he plans to study engineering. Campos has played soccer since he was 6 and his local club, Fusion N.C., won the state championship when he was 14. “What I like about it is it doesn’t matter what size you are,” he said. “Anybody can play. You can still contribute to the team. “I think I’m really aggressive. I don’t let people get the best of me.” While many college soc-

Some students sat on the rowing machines, others used their wheelchairs or sat on someone’s lap, but all were able to experience rowing on some level.

It was a first-time experience for students at Haynes-Inman Education Center as each felt the sensation of rowing a boat. Well, it was not really a boat – it was actually a rowing machine. But the technique was certainly similar. Longtime community friend and Haynes-Inman supporter Wes Cashwell had connected Vicki Simmons, the school’s adapted physical education teacher, to Scott and Katie and assured her they could make rowing work for the children. “They exceeded my

The Jamestown Public Library Basket and Gift Card Raffle is nothing new. In fact it has been used to raise funds for the library for approximately 10 years. But time is winding down to take a chance at winning your favorite item this year. The raffle runs through the end of May with the drawing on June 1. Baskets are filled with goods or gift cards donated by area businesses and individuals. Those who wish to win a particular basket or gift card may drop tickets into a container beside the one they want, hoping their ticket will be the lucky one drawn. Friends of the Library, who sponsor the raffle, see the raffle as a fun way to spread cheer to the community as well as raise money to purchase library books and materials or to help fund special programs. Baskets are currently on display during normal library hours and townspeople and patrons will have the opportunity to bid on items during that time. They will also be on display at the Friends of the Library Annual Fish Fry on May 25. “We have 35 different businesses represented, including 13 baskets and a like new, 26 inch, 18 speed bicycle,” said Nancy Dyer, a Friends of the Library member. Some of the businesses represented in the raffle include Olive Garden, McAllister’s Deli, Texas Roadhouse, Cheesecake Factory, Jamestown Golf Course, Ragsdale YMCA, Jamestown Jewelers, Pennybyrn at Maryfield, Southern Roots, The Soap Lady, Bojangles, Carter Brothers and SidWill’s Catering. Tickets may be purchased at the library checkout desk or at the fish fry. The cost is $5 for 25 chances or $10 for 75 chances. Tickets may be used to bid on one basket or spread out over several. Winners do not have to be present at the drawing.

Preservation Award goes to OJSA By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com It wasn’t hard to pick the winner of the 6th annual Mary A. Browning Historic Preservation Award. The award committee picked the charter members of the Old Jamestown School Association and because of their efforts to save the old library and turn it into the public library. Julia Ebel nominated the group “with awareness and deep gratitude for their profound and lasting contribution to the community through historic preservation efforts.” The charter members

Alethea Flukes Coffin BY LINDA WILLARD JaMeStOwN frieNDS MeetiNg Alethea Flukes Coffin was born April 16, 1798, in Big Springs, North Carolina near present day Greensboro, North Carolina. The name of her father is unknown. Her mother’s first name is given as Mary. There isn’t much information about Alethea Flukes until her marriage in about 1817 to Vestal Coffin. It isn’t known if Alethea was a member of the Religious Society of Friends prior to her marriage to Vestal Coffin. Shortly after their marriage Alethea and Vestal Coffin moved to the New Garden section of Guilford County, North Carolina. Alethea and Vestal were the parents of five children, four of whom lived to adulthood. In about 1819, Vestal Coffin developed the idea of the Underground Railroad as a means of helping slaves to freedom in the northern states. Alethea was apparently very much in favor of this and assisted Vestal by covering for his extended absences as he acted as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. Vestal died in 1826,

leaving Alethea who was very ill at the time, with small children to care for and no provisions made for the coming winter months. Somehow, Alethea and her family managed to survive a bitterly cold winter. Alethea somehow managed to take in homeless boys, feed, clothe them and in some cases nurse them back to health. Alethea apparently also continued the work of the Underground Railroad. The Coffin farm is thought to have been the primary “station” on the Underground Railroad in the New Garden area of Guilford County, North Carolina. Alethea’s job was to counsel the fugitive slaves, feed them, hide them at various locations around the farm, and them direct them on to the next Underground Railroad station and eventually to freedom. Once her sons were old

ALeTHeA FLUKeS COFFIN April 16, 1798 – November 2, 1891 enough, they assisted Alethea in her work with the Underground Railroad. With more and more Quakers moving to the free states, Alethea felt the need to move on also. With very careful saving and a loan from her brother-in-law, she managed to acquire the $100.00 necessary to purchase an 80-acre farm in Indiana and join a wagon train headed west over the Blue Ridge mountains and on to Indiana. Alethea apparently didn’t like the bumpy wagon ride. It’s reported that she walked nearly 300 miles! Once in Indiana, Alethea rode horseback alone visiting with friends and searching for property for

her farm. Alethea retuned to North Carolina, planning to get everything in order and move to Indiana permanently. This was not be, instead in 1849 she became the Matron of New Garden Boarding School, presentday Guilford College. In 1852, Alethea was finally able to move to her farm in Indiana. She also served for nine years as the Assistant Matron of Earlham College in Indiana. She probably also continued her work with the Underground Railroad. Prior to her death on November 2, 1891 (11th month, 2nd day, 1891), Alethea asked her son Addison Coffin to promise to return her body to New Garden to be buried in the cemetery at New Garden Friends Meeting. She also asked to be buried in her wedding gown. By this time, Alethea had been a widow for sixty-five years. Addison remembered his promise to his mother. Her body was returned to Greensboro, North Carolina and laid to rest next to her husband Vestal Coffin presumably wearing the wedding dress she made in 1817 when she and Vestal were married.

the children were able to do it on some level.” Scott and Katie found their experience at Haynes-Inman amazing. “The staff told us that several students were able to independently participate in PE for the first time in their lives,” Scott said. “One blind student quickly learned the technique and was able to rhythmically move by herself for almost a half hour. “A paraplegic child rolled his wheelchair up to the indoor rower, locked the brakes, and proceeded to row for the entire class. While the students were rowing indoors, we played rowing videos on a screen at the front of the gym. One video was of the 2016 Olympics. This student was able to make the connection that he and the Olympic rower had the same physical limitations.” Scott was first introduced to rowing in High Point in 2014. He and Katie later moved to Boston to train as coaches and returned to Greensboro to start their own rowing center in 2017. The

center has programs for both adults and youths. The youths have been involved in competitive rowing for about a year and the adults, who began rowing for recreation, now are beginning to compete as well. Weather permitting, rowing takes place at Lake Higgins in Greensboro. Winter training is held indoors at College Hill Cross Fit. The majority of students at Haynes-Inman would never have the opportunity to row on a lake, but now that they have been introduced to rowing, Simmons would like the opportunity for them to repeat the experience. “I think they would be able to access it more quickly if they could do it again,” she said. The staff at North Carolina Rowing is open to the idea. “We’re excited for the next opportunity to visit Haynes-Inman,” Scott said. She tried basketball for one year but didn’t like it. “I like tumbling the best and all the girls on the team, or boys if it’s coed. “My strongest aspect of cheerleading is tumbling, but I could always get better at it. AWARD

cONtiNUeD frOM frONt “This group evolved from a core of concerned and far-sighted community residents who joined efforts in what became the Save the Old School Committee,” Ebel wrote. “These persons recognized the importance of preserving the Jamestown Public School building, opened in 1915, used last by Jamestown Elementary School in 1984. With the country’s intent to demolish the building, the committee soon began forming a plan of action to preserve the old school. Dot Miller, Steve Crihfield, James Foscue and Alan Johnson met with county commissioners in hopes of gaining their support in preserving the building. Fundraising efforts followed, involving a number of active supporters and donors, enough to enable the acquisition of the original building for use as a community library.” Supporters and organizes formed the Old Jamestown School Association, which was chartered March 13, 1986, Crihfield chaired the committee for over 20 years and OJSA was responsible for the building, renovation and preservation. “Efforts of this group with foresight, commitment to community and appreciation of history and heritage have made possible the continued use of the old Jamestown School building as a library since its opening in 1988,” Ebel wrote. “Arguably, efforts of the forward thinking Old Jamestown School Association, along with its forerunner, the Save the Old School Committee, may have led more persons in contact with Jamestown’s history than any other organization. “No other historic structure in Jamestown is as consistently open and accessible to the public as the old Jamestown Public School.” The Guilford County Board of Education transferred the property’s deed to the Town of Jamestown Jan. 21, 1986.

The building, at the corner of West Main Street and Ragsdale Road has become the unofficial symbol of Jamestown, even appearing on the Town’s seal. In an article in the Jamestown News highlighting Feb. 66, 2008, on the 25th anniversary of the library, current OJSA president Gary Haynes noted that the building is a landmark in Jamestown. “Its impact is right there on the corner. Every time you’re stopped at the light, you have to look at it. There’s no way you can’t,” Haynes said. “I can’t think of many other buildings that have that impact.” “There were so many individuals who put time, money and effort into this project for the last 35-40 years,” Haynes continued. “ The Old Jamestown School Association, Inc., is the group that actually oversees restoration and operation of the library, assists the Friends of the Library, Alumni Association – we’re the parent company for the whole organization.” Also nominated was Alan Johnson for his part in OJSA and convincing the Historic Jamestown Society to erect a historic Marker noting the location of his family’s Johnson Shoe Company and the Cedarwood Garden Club for their work on the historic herb garden at Mendenhall Homeplace. The award honors Browning, a wellknown local historian and genealogist. She has used census records and the National Archives as well as research in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, local libraries and newspaper archives to compile her ever-expanding notes on the area. The award was presented on May 19 during a special ceremony in the historic Meeting House at High Point City Lake Park. A reception followed at the Richard Mendenhall house across the street.

Weather permitting, rowing takes place at Lake Higgins in Greensboro. Winter training is held indoors at College Hill Cross Fit. The majority of students at Haynes-Inman would never have the opportunity to row on a lake, but now that they have been

introduced to rowing, Simmons would like the opportunity for them to repeat the experience. “I think they would be able to access it more quickly if they could do it again,” she said. There really are no Trump mysteries By Rich lowry The surprise about the big New York Times story on Donald Trump’s tax returns is that there are no real surprises. Trump’s taxes have been an obsession of the left since he, in violation of a longstanding norm, reneged on his promise to release his returns during the 2016 campaign. Democrats counted as one of the advantages of taking the House that they could demand Trump’s returns. The dispute resulting from the administration’s refusal to turn them over is now probably headed to the Supreme Court. All the while, the expectation, or at least the suspicion, was that the returns contained some awful secret, perhaps evidence that he is a tool of the Russians. And here, The New York Times has obtained Trump’s tax information spanning a decade from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, and the revelation is that he wasn’t doing as well as he said in public and lost a boatload of money in a period that nearly destroyed him. In other words, exactly what anyone paying any attention would have expected. Yes, the amount of the reported loss, $1.17 billion, is remarkable (although inflated for tax purposes) and some of the details memorable, but can anyone say that they are surprised? Trump himself, the Washington Examiner notes, talked about his precarious financial state in this period on the first episode of “The Apprentice.” In fact, he may have exaggerated, saying that he had been “billions of dollars” in debt. As for Trump’s use of tax loopholes, he said in a debate with Hillary Clinton that if he didn’t owe any tax liability, that made him “smart.”

There really are no Trump mysteries. His flaws aren’t hidden away. He often attests to them himself, or demonstrates them publicly. For someone who cares so much about his image, and so assiduously crafts it, he’s a relative open book. No blockbuster report has more than a passing effect because each dispatch is, ultimately, another dot in a pointillist portrait of the president that was largely completed long ago. This is also why the hope that we are one investigation, tax return or subpoena away from the revelation that will finally bring Trump down — or even make a difference — is almost certainly forlorn. Obviously, it was news that he had paid off a porn star during the presidential campaign, and highly embarrassing. This is why Trump denied it for so long. But he’d already told us about his womanizing in his own words, often on “The Howard Stern Show.” Likewise, the most blameworthy conduct regarding Russia’s election interference in 2016 was out in the open — the Trump campaign was happy to derive any possible advantage from the WikiLeaks disclosures, and Trump tried to deny the obvious Russian involvement. We didn’t need a 400-page special counsel report to break this news. None of this is to defend or excuse Trump’s business practices, or his conduct in office. It is merely to say that he’s an extravagantly known quantity, and will likely win or lose in 2020 based on what we already know rather than the fruits of further investigation and fact-finding. Kennel vs. Pet Sitter By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: How do I know if a dog-care facility or a dog sitter are legit? We’re planning a vacation this summer and can’t take “Riley,” our German Shepherd. — Barbara L., Parsippany, New Jersey DEAR BARBARA: You’re doing the right thing by checking out more than one option for Riley’s care while you’re away. A dog kennel has its good points — as well as specific things to watch for. Likewise for a dog sitter, who will come to your home regularly to feed, walk and play with your dog. In New Jersey, animal facilities including kennels must be licensed annually. They also must be inspected by the local health department to make sure they are sanitary and comply with building codes. Of course, that’s not enough to ensure a satisfactory boarding experience for Riley. No one wants to come back from vacation to find their dog got sick or, in the case of an Indiana couple, was lost.

Here are some tips: — Personally visit each facility and ask for a tour. — Do research online: Read reviews, search for notices of violations, and look for any news articles about the facilities, good or bad. — Ask around at the dog park: Find out where other owners boarded their pets. The regulations for in-home pet sitters are not as clear, and so you need to check out potential sitters closely. Wordof-mouth recommendations and positive online reviews are a good start, but don’t go by these alone. — Meet the sitters personally to interview them, learn about their experience and see how they interact with Riley. — Ask if they’re affiliated with any national or international pet sitter organizations. — Find out if they are bonded and insured — this protects both you and the sitter should anything go amiss. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Scene from “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” show — musical numbers, censored curse words and all. How does she get back to the real world, and with a handsome billionaire suitor (Liam Hemsworth), does she really want to? It’s refreshingly funny, and re-teams Wilson with “Pitch Perfect” love interest Adam Devine, who plays Nata-

lie’s best friend Josh. Both have great comedic timing, and for all the poking fun at romantic comedies, they sure did make a cute one. Isn’t it ironic? “The Upside” (PG-13) — Recently paroled and on the prowl for work (or trying to look like it), Dell

(Kevin Hart) interviews for a position as caregiver to quadriplegic billionaire Phil (Bryan Cranston). He gets the job, and grudgingly takes it, and the two begin an unfolding friendship under the watchful eye of Phil’s assistant Yvonne (Nicole Kidman). Through this friendship, both grow and influence the other. It’s a story that’s been told several times, most recently in 2011’s French film “The Intouchables.” Although Hart and Cranston — and in her own way Kidman — are big personalities who can do justice to both comedy and drama, the story lacks a certain zazzle. “Trading Paint” (R) — Father and son racers face adversity and a falling out when son Cam (Toby Sebastian) leaves dad Sam (John Travolta) to drive for a rival team headed by the slick Linsky (Michael Madsen). So, dad climbs behind the wheel once more to grind out the gears on his legend. I promise you’d have a funner 90 minutes in a car crash — it would probably be more exciting, and you wouldn’t have to hear Travolta’s Southern accent. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
