Community Food Drive planned for June 6 By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Due to the rise of unemployment from COVID-19, area food banks are being pressed more than ever to help those facing food insecurities. The Sedgefield Area Coalition of Churches – which includes All Saints Episcopal, Sedgefield Presbyterian, Lutheran Church of Our Father, Celia Phelps United Methodist and Hinshaw United Methodist – has planned a Community Food Drive to help restock the food pantries of two of the churches. In the past couple of months, food pantries at Lutheran Church of Our Father and

Celia Phelps United Methodist, both located on Groometown Road in Greensboro, have had more people needing food and less to go around. “People are out of work and hungry,” said Jane Davis, a member of All Saints Episcopal who is helping coordinate the food drive. “Our churches want to do what we can to help.” All Saints Episcopal at 4211 Wayne Road, Greensboro, is hosting the food drive June 6 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. People may drive through the parking lot and place their donations on large tables set up for the occasion. Social distancing will be

observed to ensure everyone’s safety. Although sponsored by The Sedgefield Area Coalition of Churches, the entire community is invited to participate. “We hope everyone will be willing to help and to realize that anything they can give will be appreciated,” Davis said. Items needed include canned meats, fruits and vegetables, boxed foods, diapers and baby food hygiene items, paper goods, shelf-stable milk and more. “All the typical items one thinks about

donating to a food drive,” Davis said. “Everything will be divided between Lutheran Church of Our Father and Celia Phelps United Methodist.” Sedgefield Area Coalition of Churches began meeting quarterly last September. “We believe we can do more for our community by working together than if we did things separately,” Davis said. “There are some issues that affect all of us.” The coalition used Zoom to hold its last meeting but Davis feels much was accomplished. “The food drive is the beginning of things the churches hope to do together,” Davis said. “There is a lot of work to be done.”

Council delays PUD hearing, sees preliminary budget Once again, the public hearing to consider adding a Planned Unit Development (PUD) zoning district to the Land Development Ordinance has been postponed. The Jamestown Town Council, meeting virtually May 19 for the second time, postponed the hearing as well as a public hearing regarding the amendment to the Town’s operation of water and wastewater system until June 16. The delay is believed to be to allow the next meeting to be held in person in the Civic Center so concerned citizens can speak on the PUD. For recent meetings, citizens have submitted public comments, which have been read aloud by Katie Weiner, clerk. The Town Council got a look at the preliminary budget and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for 2020-2021. Normally, the Council meets in March or April to see a preliminary budget for discussion. However, due to the coronavirus, the March meeting was canceled. However, Town Manager Kenny Cole and Finance Director Judy Gallman met with councilmembers in groups of two or by telephone in recent weeks. The total budget presented for 2020-2021 is $15,873,890, a 29 percent increase from the current amended 2019-2020 budget. “This is really misleading because some of these are just interfund transfers that really cancel each other out,” Gallman said. “The total budget excluding interfund transfers of is $13,339,690.” That figure will change, however, because the Council deleted some items.

The budget does not include a tax increase for Town services this year, but the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire District, which services Jamestown, is asking Guilford County Commissioners for a 2.5¢ tax increase for county-wide fire service. If approved, that figure will be added to the Jamestown property tax. “Thus the tax rate for Jamestown, if the 2.5¢ fire district tax is approved by the County commissioners for the 2020-21 fiscal year, will increase to $.493 per $100 of valuation,” Gallman said. “If the County commissioners do not approve the entire increase, then the Town property tax rate (and revenues) will be adjusted down accordingly before the budget ordinance is adopted.” The water and sewer rate remains unchanged and the sewer rates will decrease by 14 percent from previous years. This is due to completion of the City of High Point’s Eastside Treatment Plant sewer project. Jamestown is a partner in the treatment plant and was required to pay a share of the project. Predicting other sources of revenue, like sales tax, was tricky this year, due to the virus, so projections were considered conservatively – approximately 75 percent of the normal amount of sales tax revenue. On the personnel side, the 2020/21 budget contains provisions to allow for a 2.3 percent cost of living increase and a 0-2.7 percent merit increase for employees. Prior to discussing the budget, the Council considered increasing the minimum wage for Town SEE COUNCIL, PAGe 2

Following the rule of ten and wearing masks, Flaco and Ze Clownettes circled a building at Brookdale Retirement Center on Skeet Club Road and entertained residents who watched out their windows. Included in the group were Angela Biagioli (dancing Rosie), Anna Biagioli (Cat girl), Macie Chandler (Miss giggles), Abby Foster (Happy Jewelz), Julianna Cliford (Miss Buttons), Londyn Lee (Unicorn), Regan Meinecke (Cutie), Haley Walker (Skippy Sparkles), Lundee Amos (LuLu Pickels) and Ned McMillan (Flaco).

Clown troupe performs outside for audience inside By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Those finding it difficult to stay in their houses and yards during the coronavirus pandemic should try to image being confined to one room. That is what has faced residents of assisted living facilities. To protect their health, residents have not been allowed personal contact with family and friends or with each other for several months. Their only interaction with people has been with the facility staff. Ned McMillan, a.k.a. Flaco and founder of Flaco and Ze Clownettes, wanted to change that for residents of Brookdale Skeet Club, an assistant living facility on Skeet Club Road. On May 16, he, Lundee Amos (LuLu Pickels) and eight clownettes gathered outside Brookdale Skeet Club to spread a bit of joy to residents inside.

Escorted by Amy Jordan, executive director of the facility, Flaco, LuLu Pickels and Ze Clownettes paraded joyfully around the building to entertain residents watching through their windows. Although not able to provide a regular performance, there was bubble blowing, ribbons fluttering, acrobating, juggling, waving

continued from front employees to $15 an hour. All councilmembers wanted time to review the figures, so a vote was continued until the June 16 meeting. The outcome of the vote could change budget figures. The CIP is broken down into must-do, should-do and could-do projects, with expected expenses broken down over several years. The must do capital project funds for 2020-2021 include $2,653,433 for the East Fork sidewalk and pedestrian bridge, Lydia/E. Main Street sidewalk, Oakdale Road sidewalk and Penny Road sidewalk. Several of these projects are underway and the Town will receive reimbursement for much of the expenses. Other must-do projects include the update to the Comprehensive Plan, new recreation maintenance building, paving, crosswalk improvements, new sanitation truck, a sidewalk along Potter Drive, renovations to the Civic Center and Town Hall and a sound system for the Civic Center. These projects total $1,571,964 for 2020-2021. Water-Sewer fund projects total $3,979,260 for the upcoming fiscal year and must-do items include an odor control project, incinerator rehab, Riverdale pump station repair and expansion, sewer improvements, survey for water line replacements and the Main Street water line. While Councilmembers liked the proposed 20202021 budget and CIP, they did ask for several items to be removed this year. One was to cut back on some of the renovations to Town Hall and the Civic Center. The Council will hold a special meeting June 23 to vote on the budget. This will take place after the Guilford County Commissions vote on the fire department request.

continued from front

The budget must be approved by the end of June to go into effect July 1. Copies of the preliminary budget will be available at Town Hall. Since the building is closed to the public right now, anyone requesting one should contact Town Hall prior to coming by. In other business: GTCC President Dr. Tony Clarke addressed the Council regarding a 2020 bond referendum request from the school. Details of the request will be featured in the June 4 Jamestown News. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee survey has been extended to June 15 and the census has been extended to Aug. 15. Councilmember Martha Wolfe mentioned that the N.C. Department of Transportation has put all projects on hold but current projects can continue. The department has begun furloughing employees during the virus and a $300 million loss is projected by June. Over $2 billion in projects are on hold. Music In the Park has been canceled through June and the Town is waiting to see whether it can start up in July. Bands have been rescheduled for 2021. The League of Municipalities is helping towns experiencing shortfalls in their budgets. Wolfe asked Cole to look into this for Jamestown. Mayor Lynn Montgomery mentioned that Guilford County has funds to cover town expenses for COVID-19. The May 19 Town Council meeting is available for viewing at https:// www.youtube.com/ watch?v=uYOBbU7RFgo. Since many people have watched the videos posted by the Town, staff are considering continuing video recording of meetings once in-person meetings are allowed.

watch had their blinds open. “Donna told me they were surprised and excited to see the clowns and clownettes,” Jordan said. “One lady was in bed and got up so she could see better. We even got feedback from some family members who had learned about the activity from residents.” McMillan got the idea to entertain outside the windows of the facility after seeing a Facebook post of a similar activity by clowns from a Shiner’s Club in Dunn, N.C. When he suggested the idea to Jordan, she agreed immediately. The week before the scheduled event, McMillan and Jordan walked around the building to determine what could be done and where. Following the performance, McMillan said he was especially impressed with the professionalism of the kids, noting that none complained of the heat. “The kids had a mission and were going to do it,” he said. “That is a true performance ethic – do your best under any situation.” Many of Saturday’s performers were third graders. When Flaco and Ze Clownettes first started years ago, participants were all fifth graders. Currently, they range from second to fifth grade, most from Florence Elementary School. Rehearsals begin in September and are held weekly after school. Shows start in January with a performance for students in the Florence Elementary School ACES program and continue through early June.

the windows at Brookdale Sheet Club, Jordan would like to see it entertain outside for residents at the other Brookdale facilities located on the same campus. McMillan is more than open to the idea. He also hopes to visit Adams Farm Living & Rehabilitation with his troupe of merry makers. “We might be able to do some kind of entertainment for health-care workers during their shift changes,” McMillan added with enthusiasm. “As the limit to the number of people who can gather increases a bit, we may be able to do an entire show outside.” (McMillan has created a Facebook salute to former students who were clownettes as fifth graders and are graduating from high school this year.)

“There are lots of moving parts to get the show organized and ready to perform,” McMillan said. “It is a big commitment for the kids and their families. In addition to rehearsals, we perform about every two-three weeks at rest homes, hospitals, churches and schools. “The shows we do at Haynes-Inman Education Center and Word Seekers International Church are almost electric with audience reaction. The hardest part of performing outside the windows of the assisted living facility was not being able to see the audience.” Flaco and Ze Clownettes held only eight events this year before being forced to postpone their performances. Feed your mind By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva The unrelenting barrage of bad news and stress can have a negative impact on both your body and your mind. Need a boost? According to recent research, some foods have the same effect on your body as taking a prescription mood-enhancing drug. Do you reach for food or caffeine during the day in an attempt to feel calm, or find a jolt of energy or a moment of bliss? But above all else, do you just really crave a better mood? While good habits such as eating breakfast every morning and regular meals and snacks throughout the day form the cornerstone of an energized outlook, science has increasingly revealed the vital ways in which our food impacts our mood. And it may surprise you that some of the best weapons to help cure crankiness and boost energy can be found in your local grocery store. The following foods will help your mood in two ways. First, they deliver several key nutrients that play a vital role in supporting brain chemistry to reduce the risk of depression and improve the quality of your sleep. And they do something equally important as well: Powerful combinations of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help you build up your energy and capacity to manage life from your body’s deepest levels (your cells’ metabolic and energy pathways). This is what we should all aim for, rather than a quick burst of stimulation from a sugar or caffeine fix that ultimately leaves you feeling cranky or tired. Try my Good Mood Salad recipe, and make these feel-good foods a part of a delicious new happiness and health routine. Dark Chocolate: Not only delicious, dark chocolate is high in magnesium, a mineral that calms your muscles and reduces anxiety. It also contains tryptophan, which helps reduce symptoms of depression. Salmon and Walnuts: Both are packed with omega-3s, which help fight off depression and mood swings. Bonus: They also can help improve your memory and focus. Spinach: This leafy green is stocked with folic acid, a B-vitamin that has been found to boost your mood. It’s

also an antioxidant that works to protect your brain cells from free radicals, which can lead to low energy and mood swings. Chicken: The white meat contains B12, a vitamin that helps to keep you calm. Low B12 levels can make you moody and tired. Tofu: Tofu helps your muscles relax, causing a calming effect on your body. Avocado: Contains serotonin, a feelgood neurotransmitter. It’s also really good for your skin, hair and nails. Greek Yogurt: Not only is it a wonder food, the probiotics in Greek yogurt help boost your mood and immune system. Green Tea: It’s full of theanine, an antioxidant that acts as a calming agent. Berries: Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries contain anthocyanidins and anthocyanins — nutrients that help reduce stress and depression. Chia and Flax Seeds: Chia and flax have about the same amount of protein per ounce, at 4.4 grams and 5.1 grams, respectively. However, chia is one of only a few plant sources that is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all of the needed protein-forming amino acids. Both of these seeds are a great way to get more fiber in your diet. Chia is one of the richest sources of soluble fiber, which takes longer to get through your digestive tract, adding bulk to stool and slowing glucose absorption. Flax is mostly soluble fiber, which is tied to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. GOOD MOOD SALAD Serve this mood-enhancing salad along with a tall glass of green tea and 2 ounces of dark chocolate as a sweet finish to uplift your mood and nourish your body and your mind!

These are stressful days. Some of us were living under tough circumstances in the best of times, and nowadays the daily news just ratchets it up. There are two Department of Veterans Affairs smartphone apps that might be of help to you. Tactical Breathing Trainer, or Tactical Breather: Created by the National Center for Telehealth & Technology, the phone app can teach you to get control over your responses to stress, both psychological or physiological. Record medications and treatments, daily events — anything that can alter your mood. The information can be saved to help your medical professional help you, or just for your own knowledge to see how you’re doing. The VA has a few other helpful apps as well. Look for CBT-I Coach if you’re battling insomnia. Try Stay Quit Coach if you’ve quit smoking and need help staying quit. MOVE! Coach is an app for weight management, with lots of information and places to store your results. See Life Armor for help on 17 different topics, such as relationships, PTSD, depression and more. Twist, shape and bake healthy bread bears By dONNA ERICKSON DONNA'S DAY: CreAtIve FAMILY FUN Baking bread is just plain fun when your preschoolers shape prepared dough into adorable bear shapes. Toss in simple math along the way too, as your pintsize bakers divide the dough into halves, fourths and even sixths to form the bear’s arms, legs and snout. They’ll watch the dough rise before their eyes, and they’ll love “painting” the bears with an egg wash before you pop them in the oven. Serve them warm, drizzled with some honey from a little pot for a memorable afternoon treat. Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need for two 8-inch-tall bears: — One loaf of prepared frozen bread dough, such as Rhodes brand (available in the frozen-food section of grocery stores) — 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon of water — Raisins — Honey (optional) Here’s the fun: 1. Thaw the loaf of frozen bread dough for two 8-inchtall bears. Use it while it is still cold. 2. Cut the loaf in half. Set one of the halves aside for a few minutes while you form the first bear. 3. Cut the dough into two even pieces and let your

child roll one of the pieces into a ball with his hands. Set it on a large, greased cookie sheet for the body. Press it down to flatten slightly. 4. Cut the other piece in half. Roll one of the halves into a ball for the head and place it above the body. You may need to pinch the two parts together. 5. Pick off a small bit from the remaining piece for the snout. Cut the rest into six even pieces. Roll all seven small pieces into balls. Place a ball on the face for the snout, two ears at the top of the head, 2 arms at the sides of the body, and 2 legs to the bottom of the body. 6. Make tiny slits in the dough and insert raisins for eyes and for a belly button. Repeat steps for second bear. 7. Let them rise, covered

with a damp towel or plastic wrap, for about 45 minutes in a warm place until doubled in size. 8. Remove covering and brush some egg mixture on top of the bears. Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a cooling rack. TIP: Make several bears, and dress them up with thin ribbons tied around their necks. Set in a basket as treats at a teddy bear party. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
