Herndon leaves Ragsdale with a lot of love By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com When Brian Herndon walks the halls of Ragsdale High School, he stops to greet every student and teacher by name, all with a friendly smile on his face. But June 30 will be Herndon’s last day he walks the halls of Ragsdale as the school’s athletic director before his retirement. He’s quick to recall the number of state championships the school has won – 29 – but regrets that none of those have been in his eight years as athletic director. Several students have won

individual state championships, however, during that period. Herndon got into coaching after playing quarterback for Grimsley High School’s football team and at East Carolina University. While rehabbing after an injury at ECU, he was offered a job as coach at Grimsley. He went from there to Lexington, Page and Ragsdale, where he has worked under three principals in his 30 years there. He not only coached football, but also track for a while at Ragsdale, where he also taught English for a few years. He knew he wanted to

coach in high school when his Grimsley team was playing Burlington Williams, a state powerhouse. “We beat them convincingly,” Herndon recalled. “I saw the excitement from the players and coaches and I see ragsdale, page 3

Graduation – an end leading to a beginning By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com “Pomp and Circumstance” never sounded sweeter than it did while played as nine graduates from Project SEARCH filed into the meeting room at Millis Health Center in High Point on June 3. Wearing blue graduation stoles and matching caps, which each had personalized, participants took their place on the front row and were recognized for completing a 10-month internship at Wake Forest Baptist Health High Point Medical Center. Project SEARCH provides unpaid internships to individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, preparing them for a tran-

sition into the workplace. “So far, we have five graduates with jobs or job offers,” said Brandi Pittman, a teacher with Guilford County Schools who serves as a Project SEARCH teacher and job coach. “We have one who is going for a second interview that we are 100 percent sure will be given a job offer.” Charlotte Lesane and LaShawna Covington also assist with the program as job coaches. They are from the UNC TEACCH supported employment program and work fulltime with Project SEARCH. Participants in the program are in their last year of high school and have completed requirements for a see graduation, page 3

Students selected designs for their caps from several they were shown and spent time in class decorating them. The message on Xavier Rikard’s cap – Y’all Hiring? – seems to say it all.

At its June 18 meeting, the Jamestown Town Council hopes to clear up several items of old business that have been on the agenda for some months. First up is adoption of the new budget for 2019-20 and the Capital Improvement Plan for 2019-20. The budget must be approved by June 30 and go into effect July 1. The budget of $10,836,284 has changed slightly from the preliminary budget submitted earlier and reflects a 3.85 percent increase from the current budget. Finance Director Judy Gallman said at the May meeting there would be no tax increase and tax rates would remain at $0.468 per $100 evaluation. She added that the water rate increase by 3.5 percent is due to an increase in the rate from the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority, from which the Town purchases water. Sewer rates will remain the same. Recommended capital outlay include an entrance sign near the West Main Street/Penny Road intersection, updates to the 2020 Comprehensive Plan, work on Phase II of the Oakdale Road sidewalk project, construction of a new recreation maintenance facility, crosswalk improvements, a sound system for the Civic Center, driving range improvements, and flood

lights at Town Hall. Also under old business is an update on the sidewalk projects as well as the consideration of a property donation of 2.78 acres from the City of High Point at 107-115 Kingsdale Court in the Cedarwood subdivision, which is in the Jamestown extra-territorial jurisdiction. Legal wording has delayed approval of this donation since it first appeared on the agenda in March. Under new business, Mayor Lynn Montgomery will recognize Dr. Randy Parker on his retirement from Guilford Technical Community College. Montgomery will also recognize Micah Marston, who has served as the Town Council representative from Ragsdale High School. Captain Pruitt, of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, will give a neighborhood safety update. One project on the proposed Capital Improvement Plan is a sidewalk along the east side of Penny Road, from West Main Street to the bridge over High Point’s Koonce City Lake. The Council will consider a resolution to set up a capital project fund for the sidewalk as well as a budget amendment to transfer the town’s match to this fund. Following the regular session, the Council will go into closed session for a job evaluation discussion. The Town Council will meet June 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Pennybyrn continues mission of care with major expansion plans “It is fitting that we make this announcement here in front of the convent,” said Rich Newman, president of Pennybyrn at Maryfield. “This is where it all started.” Newman referred to a plan to invest millions to expand Pennybyrn, a senior living and healthcare community located in High Point at the city limits with Jamestown. The project would add 40

independent living apartments; enhance Pennybyrn’s dining venues, fitness center and other general spaces; upgrade the skilled households and assisted living areas; complete a small adult day enrichment center; and build a standalone transitional rehab center. The standalone rehab center, which will face Penny Road, would be the only one of its kind in the area. “We expect to begin building in a year,” Newman said.

“In 1947, the Sisters, Poor Servants of the Mother of God, felt lead to serve patients released from the hospital with the first transitional care and rehab facility,” explained Sister Lucy Hennessy, mission leader. “Since then, our commitment has been to serve the community in new and better ways and to demonstrate God’s love for the lives we touch. This project builds Photo by Norma B. Dennis upon that commitment.” As Sister Lucy Hennessy, right, watches, Rich Newman, president of Pennybyrn The project has been at Maryfield, introduces Kitty and Earl Congdon. Alvah Unthank

BY LINDA WILLARD JameStowN frieNdS meetiNg Alvah Unthank, the son of Jonathan Unthank and Rachel Williams Unthank, was born January 3, 1831 in Preble County, Ohio. Unthank’ s father was originally from the New Garden section of Guilford County, North Carolina. His mother was originally from Tennessee. Unthank’ s parents were married in 1830 and moved to Newport (presentday Fountain City), Indiana. The Unthank’ s were strongly opposed to slavery and worked closely with Levi Coffin in the Indiana operation of the Underground Railroad. Unthank’ s grandparents Joseph and Ann Unthank were early Quaker settlers

in Guilford County, North Carolina and members of New Garden Friends Meeting. At the time, many Quakers in North Carolina still owned slaves. The Unthank’ s freed their slaves and moved to Ohio. Unthank, nineteen years old at the time, was working as a saddler in his father’s Newport, Indiana store. Gold fever soon struck the town in 1850. Two local school teachers, Henry Puckett and Steve Venard

Alvah unthank January 3, 1831 – July 1, 1850 began organizing the Newport Mining Company. Puckett and Venard were soon joined by Solomon Woody and Pusey Graves. The Newport Mining Company consisted of twentyseven men, mostly residents of Newport or Richmond, Indiana. The men left home on April 9, 1850. Several of

the men bought personally owned draft horses. These men and the draft horses were to travel overland while the rest of the company traveled by steamboat from Cincinnati, Ohio to St. Joseph, Missouri. The first month of the trip was uneventful and mostly routine. However, trouble soon began a few miles west of Ash Hollow on the Platte River in present-day Nebraska. Joe Lauter and Addison Lamb died of cholera within a day of each other. Several of the men were also afflicted but were able to recover. On June 26, 1850, Unthank began complaining of not feeling well. He seemed to be well enough to travel, so the company kept moving on. Three days later, Unthank suffered a seri-

ous relapse. The company stopped to “nurse and doctor” Unthank, however it soon became clear that he was not going to recover. On July 2, 1850, Puckett wrote that “Alvah died this morning about 3 o’clock. We buried him at 1 P.M. This mournful event caused quite a sensation in our little company. …….The bluffs nearby afforded some very nice smooth stones, upon one of which we recorded in the best style our imperfect implements would allow, his name, age, state, etc. and place it at the head of his grave.” Records indicate that Unthank’ s grave was lost and found numerous times in the late 1850s. Cowboys noticed the grave in the early 1880s and in 1886, railroad construction work-

ers found the grave overgrown and the headstone fallen. In 1899, a sheepherder once again found the headstone down. He tidied up the area and planted wild flowers. Until the last discovery in 1920, little was done to preserve the grave. The Casper, Wyoming Lions Club initiated a research effort to identify Alvah Unthank. The club members wrote letters to Indiana and Oregon. Relatives were eventually found in Richmond, Indianan and the story of the Newport Mining Company and Alvah Unthank finally came to light. In 1924, Converse County, Wyoming Deputy Sheriff, Howard Jackson built an iron fence that still surrounds the Unthank grave.

Sophia, daughter of Chris and Karen Johnson, states, “Peer Tutoring has been very meaningful to me in that I can help others with some of the same obstacles that once held me back.” She plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and major in psychology to further her goal of humanitarian service. Each of the recipients will receive $2,000 for use in their education pursuits. Following the presentation of the scholarships, the Reverend Dr. Jay Smith presented the sermon and special music was provided by the JPC Praise Band. Attendees were treated to a Pentecost picnic following the worship service and two birthday cakes: one for Pentecost and the 50th birthday of the church and the other, for the graduating seniors and scholarship winners past and present. This scholarship was established by the JPC Session and the Pleasants family from memorial contributions made by church members, friends, family and business associates following the death of Lane Pleasants on January 29, 1999. Lane, the daughter of Bill and Clarajo Pleasants, was a lifelong resident of Jamestown and member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church who lost her life following a lung transplant as she fought a courageous fight against cystic fibrosis. She graduated from Southwest Guilford High School, attended UNC-Greensboro and worked part time for Fossil Watches as well as the After School Program at JPC. During its Sunday worship service on June 9, 2019 at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, those in attendance had the awesome experience of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the church in conjunction with Pentecost which is the universal birthday of Christian Church. The day also included recognition of the 20th anniversary of the Lane Pleasants Memorial Scholarship culminating in the recognition of the 2019 graduating seniors. Jim Ray, church member since 1977, welcomed to the service previous scholarship recipients and their families who had received the Pleasants scholarship or a stipend during the 20 years since its inception. Jim Ray served on the Scholarship Committee at least ten years as a member of the Resource Management Committee which oversaw the investment of the funds. The amount grew from the initial $9,000 to the current balance of approximately $34,000. Past recipients attending the service were: Katy McGill Burkholder, Leigh Ann Tally, Elizabeth Minor Namkung, Adam Smith Mitchell, Sara Kenzie Powell, Savanah “Vania” Tally, Jordan Hjelmquist, Clay Guernier, Brian Stroud, Catherine Minor. Daniel Rankin a former church member returned to present the Pleasants scholarship stating, “It is such an honor to present this scholarship because Lane was one of my babysitters. I grew up in the Jamestown Presbyterian Church and to be here today feels like coming home.” In making the scholarship presentation, Daniel stated, “The scholarship committee consisted of Jim Ray, Brian Stroud, Charles Stanfield and Bill and Clarajo Pleasants. They recognized that several of the 2019 graduating senior were equally outstanding in their academic accomplishments and although different were stellar in those other attributes that the guidelines required.” “How fitting,” Daniel continued, “that on the 20th Anniversary of the scholarship three remarkable young people will receive this award: Miss Anna Grace Gibson, Mr. Zachary David Hannah and Miss Sophia Mae Johnson.” These three young people were equally impressive in their academics, leadership qualities, church, school and community activities. Each of their grade point averages on a weight-

graduation continued from front certificate or diploma. During the graduation ceremony, each individual student was presented a special award. “Charlotte, LaShawna and I worked for over a month compiling things we wanted to recognize about each student,” Pittman said. “Then we came up with awards based on their hobbies and likes and tried to tie that into characteristics we’ve seen throughout the year.” Guilford County Schools has been part of Project SEARCH since November 2012. The school system partners with the hospital in High Point and Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The two local hospitals are among 12 Project SEARCH sites in North Carolina. The program began at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Erin Richel, director of the emergency department there, had the idea to fill entry-level jobs with people with disabilities and Project SEARCH was born. The program has since spread to over 500 sites worldwide. Graduates of the program have successfully completed three rotations in various departments of the hospital, as well as classroom time where they learn a variety of life skills that help support their goal of at least 16 hours a week of integrated employment. “During the first rotation, we access their skills and that determines their second rotation,” Pittman said. “For the first few days of each rotation, participants receive one-on-one support from a job coach, but by the fourth or fifth week most are able to work independently at the tasks they have been assigned. “I have seen students’ self esteem grow throughout each program,” Pittman added. “There is a huge burst of confidence in many of them. From when they were too

shy to speak up at the beginning of the year and wouldn’t participate in class discussions, to where they felt confident enough to talk to multiple people and were fully participating in class discussions by the end of the year.” Pittman also saw changes in participants’ maturity levels, with several going from a lot of whining and defensiveness to just a bit of whining, with more acknowledgement of wrongdoing and accepting feedback with composure. “They have more awareness of themselves and their place in the world,” Pittman said. “In the beginning there was an attitude of, ‘I can just show up and everyone will be thankful for any help I can give.’ By the end of the year, they understood that they have to actually do a good job and earn praise in order to receive it. “There is also more of an awareness of what they want to do – like living on their own, and taking care of themselves and their houses – and how they have to work to get there.” Nina Manivong was extremely pleased at the progress her son Adam made throughout the program. “It surpassed what I expected,” she said. “Adam was shy and now he talks more. He surprises me. I want him to be as independent as he can be and this program has helped.” Adam said he most enjoyed being with his classmates and learning new things. But like all graduates, Project SEARCH participants find it is the end of one chapter in their lives and the beginning of another. The job coaches will continue to help those who have not found jobs as they seek employment. They also will provide on-the-job assistance with participants who have jobs until they can work on their own.

The transitional rehab center will be named the Lillian Congdon Transitional Rehab Center after Earl’s mother. It will have 24 rooms and a large therapy space that can serve outpatients and residents needing short-term

rehabilitation care. Although Earl’s mother was never a resident at Pennybyrn, other family members have been. “We saw the need for this in the community,” Earl said. “God has blessed us with a long life and we might need it ourselves some day. “It is a nice way to help ourselves and the communi-

ty,” he acknowledged with a gentle smile. “Pennybyrn and the Sisters are so grateful to Earl and Kitty and all the others who have enabled us to reach this first $7,000,000 goal in our overall campaign,” Sister Hennessy said. “Fundraising is continuing and will provide further enhancements to our healthcare area.”

said, ‘This is what I want to do.’ I never looked back. I loved it right away.” Ragsdale seemed destined to be the place he would spend most of his coaching career. “Ragsdale is home. When we landed here 30 years ago, it became home right away,” he said. He added that the people are what he loves about the job. “We honored our seniors the other day and I told them, relationship is a really good word. But the connotation of the word ‘relationship’ is an incredible understatement. What we have is love here, with me and with the community and with the kids.” He pointed to a sign on the whiteboard in his office that says, “Servant. Team. Always in trenches with coaches and athletes.” The sign is his mantra and it defines who he is. Herndon never had a student whose potential was a concern. He said he always saw greatness in every student-athlete. “I always saw what they could become,” he said. “Same with our coaches.” Herndon could have a second career as a motivational speaker. He is always praising those he meets and holds studentathletes to a high standard. “We always appreciate a win but always want to tweek things. Don’t ever get complacent.” “We’re Ragsdale and we always expect to win,” he said, but should a team suf-

fer a loss, he makes certain his team congratulates the other team. “Nobody does a better job in customer service than Ragsdale. Things like that matter. We’re not going to lower the bar.” “Coach Herndon is very committed,” said Ragsdale Principal James Gibson. “He rarely talks about anything else. “He is very passionate and takes time to get to know the families. He has earned the opportunity to enjoy retirement. [Incoming Athletic Director] Deborah Jones has big shoes to fill.” Andy Durham, at Greensboro Sports, wrote on the group’s website, “Brian Herndon has been one of the top athletic directors that we have ever worked with. Such a nice person, always a positive attitude, with loads of energy and he always went out of his way to make you feel welcome at the Diamond R, Ragsdale High School. Guilford County has some great ADs and Mr. Brian Herndon was one of the best in history of the Guilford County Schools System. “Brian Herndon provided the sort of old-fashioned hospitality you just don’t see that much of any more, and it was always a pleasant change to get that special treatment, when you went out to Ragsdale High School.” When asked what his favorite memory was of his time at Ragsdale, Herndon

couldn’t pinpoint a single event, but said, “every day is a blessing.” Each year, seniors do a “senior block” on a few walls in the school with their name and their college. Herndon teared up when he said this year the seniors took four blocks to honor him. Herndon’s legacy will continue past his retirement as it does past the graduation of 30 years of students at the school. As a recent graduation program let out, Herndon greeted former students by name, some of whom now have children at the school or who will be attending soon. He knew everyone’s name. That is one reason he said the thing he will miss most are the people – “and every aspect of the job.” Brian Herndon is Ragsdale High School’s biggest cheerleader. He will be missed, but friends will probably still see him at games, possibly dressed in his Ragsdale blue blazer and blue-and-white-striped tie. “I will forever bleed that Ragsdale Tiger Blue,” Herndon said in an email retirement announcement. “Thank you all so much for the privilege it has been for me to be on this journey with you. I love you all.” The sentimental man who continues to call his wife “my bride” after years of marriage may soon leave the building, but he will always hold a piece of the school in his heart.

Help shaggy dog beat summer heat BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S corNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a big, shaggy mutt named “Dover.” I’m pretty new to owning a dog, and I wonder if his thick fur coat will bother him here in the South. What can I do to make sure he’s comfortable? — Gerry in Macon, Georgia DEAR GERRY: First off, congratulations on your new family member! It sounds like you’re already doting on Dover. Talk to Dover’s veterinarian about how he should be groomed for summer. Some long-haired dogs do very well in the summer if they’re regularly groomed, their fur is brushed out and trimmed a bit, and they don’t spend a long time outdoors in the heat. Other dogs suffer in their long coats — they have trouble cooling off, and their skin

can get very irritated. I’ve met more than a few that have their fur shaved very short during the warm months. A couple of other important notes for summertime dog care: Never leave a dog (or any pet) inside of a car, even for a few minutes, even with the window open a couple of inches. Car interiors can quickly become far too hot for pets and overwhelm their ability to cool off. (Remember, dogs don’t sweat like we do to cool off.) Also, be careful walking your dog on a sidewalk or street in the heat. The pavement can easily burn the treads of their paws, causing pain and sometimes an infection. Opt for a dog-friendly park with lots of green grass instead. Or, put booties on your dog’s paws to protect them from burns. The daily beast's shabby scoop BY RICH LOWRY Breaking news: Some guy posted a doctored video of Nancy Pelosi. But fear not. The website The Daily Beast sprang into action. It tracked down the random, Trump-supporting man who allegedly posted the offending clip, hounded him until he talked, then published his name and other details about his life in a shocking instance of harassment masquerading as journalism. The man whose identity was revealed by The Daily Beast is, by the publication’s account, an unemployed African American forklift operator who lives in New York City and runs a couple of very minor Facebook pages. He had done it anonymously, one assumes, to avoid any professional and personal fallout, which The Daily Beast has now exposed him to. The video in question, doctored to make it sound like Pelosi was drunk when talking about Donald Trump at a progressive conference, dominated a news cycle a couple of weeks ago. In other words, it was a big deal for about six hours, and then disappeared like most everything else in our disposable news culture. The video was certainly a testament to the debased quality of online discourse, but it was also quickly identified as a fake, because it was pretty obviously a fake. None of this justifies outing the man supposedly responsible for it. In a better world, anonymous political commentators could be identified without fear of social media mobs attempting to ruin their lives. As has been demonstrated time and again, this is not the world we live in. Widely criticized for its decision to name the man — or in online parlance, “dox” him — The Daily Beast defended its story

as a way to show “that disinformation isn’t the purview of Russia alone.” But who ever believed this? Even if it’s relevant that someone in the Bronx rather than St. Petersburg produced the video, that didn’t require naming the man — let alone detailing his employment history, talking to his ex-girlfriend or delving into his guilty plea to a domestic violence charge and an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a probation violation. (The man denies many of the details of the story.) All of this was completely gratuitous. The balance, which any responsible publication should have considered, between the public benefit of naming the man (none) and the personal harm that might be done by naming him (considerable) isn’t even close. Of course, it matters that he is a Trump supporter. Outlets like The Daily Beast don’t make a routine practice of hunting down trolls who are producing the vast sea of antiTrump material online, because they don’t consider spoofing or maligning Trump to be a threat to democracy, or at all undesirable. Incredibly enough, according to The Daily Beast, someone at Facebook provided details about the man’s posting history that were used to confirm the story. Users of Facebook should take note. Although reporters might believe that rank abuse of America’s high elected officials is something new, it’s as old as the republic. And it’s often been anonymous. By all means, call out online distortions and lies, but deliberately exposing low-level political advocates to personal destruction is shabby and irresponsible, and more an act of political retaliation than journalism. On Saturday, Christopher Coke joined his classmates as a member of the 2019 graduating class of Ragsdale High School. It was not the only excitement Coke had during the week, however. On June 4, he was one of three recipients of a Stephen L. Knier Memorial Scholarship, which supports high school seniors with disabilities who plan to pursue a higher level of education. Knier was the former executive director of LIFESPAN Inc., and a longtime member of the Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities, whose mission is to create a barrier-free community. One way it helps is through providing the Knier scholarships. Other recipients this year included Calley Hull and Elijah Blake. The $750 scholarship Coke received will help as he begins pursuing a degree at Campbell University in the fall. “I like the idea of attending Campbell because it is a small school,” Coke said. “It is far enough away from home, but not too far, and I can still have instate tuition.” Born with Spina Bifida, Coke uses a wheelchair, which could make getting around a college campus somewhat of a challenge. But he has never let a wheelchair interfere with his goals. Not only did he receive his Eagle Scout Award, he has been a major competitor in sports, excelling at swimming and track and field. “I come from a family of athletes,” Coke said. “Both my parents and grandfather played sports in high school and I wanted to give it a try.” His parents, Larry and Carol Coke, have supported him in all his athletic endeavors.

Pictured with Christopher Coke are Vickie Coke, aunt; Jesse Coke, PawPaw; Ann Coke, Nana; David Coke, uncle; Carol, mother; and Larry, dad. Coke participated on the Miracle League and Challenger baseball teams and used a sports chair to play Upwards basketball with a church team. He also competed with the Adams Farm community swim team and for the past three years participated in Paralympic swimming at the Junior and National levels, which saw him and his family traveling throughout the United States to various competitions. “I either won or placed every time I competed,” he said. He was on the track team at Jamestown Middle School and participated in indoor and outdoor track at the varsity level at Ragsdale. Sitting on a special throwing frame, which his father built after Coke outgrew a rented one, the athlete competed in shot putt, discus and javelin. During his track career, he acquired six state championships, as well as several second- and third-place honors. Coke also participated in 100-meter and 200-meter races at the state level. “I only competed in wheelchair races at regional and state events but at regular school competitions

I would race by myself to get qualifying times,” Coke explained. “The scores I got also helped my team. “The best part of competing was being around other athletes like me. I have stayed in touch with some of them.” Coke has no plans to participate in competitive sports in college, but will focus instead on working toward a degree in mechanical engineering, a subject that has intrigued him since he was young. “I have a creative mind and could often see better ways to make things work,” he said. “I took art in school and enjoy the design aspect of drawing.” Coke was surprised and pleased to get the Mayor’s Committee memorial scholarship to help with his studies. He also received several other scholarships including some from Campbell University.
