Council to try again for Horton public hearings By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

Will the seventh time be the charm for three public hearings on the property along Guilford College and Mackay Roads? Public hearings for annexation, rezoning and a development agreement are all on the Town Council’s agenda for June 23. The annexation public hearing opened Nov. 21 of last year. It has been continued each month since without resolution. A rezoning request for the property also has been continued several months. The delay has been caused by

continued work on a development agreement for the property now owned by D.R. Horton, which requested the agreement. The company is working on the plan with the town staff, town attorney and land use attorney Tom Terrell. An incomplete draft was available in the January Council packet. At the April 19 Council meeting, the hearings were continued until June, as representatives from D.R. Horton, the company’s attorney Marc Isaacson, Jamestown’s Land Use Attorney Tom Terrell and a few audience members filled many of the normally empty seats in the Civic Center that night.

“Sometimes, taking a long time on a project is a good thing,” Terrell said of the development agreement. “This is not a small project. This started months ago. We met with D.R. Horton and we made it very clear the Town is looking for a type of function and a type of quality out of this project.” Isaacson requested the continuance on behalf of the property owner, stating D.R. Horton disagrees with parts of the draft. “We believe we’re making progress, but there are a few key components and open items,” Isaacson said. “I don’t think any of us, especially a home builder, would enter into an agreement

such as this. We want to get this right.” Also on the Council’s agenda is a presentation by Tigermoth Creative of a new marketing video. Marketing of the town is part of the Town’s Strategic Plan, which is also on the agenda for updating approval. Under business, the Council will consider approval of a Jamestown Golf Clubhouse Facility Use Policy. The group will also consider an offer from George Ragsdale for property located at 304 R1 East Main St. This is a 0.53-acre landlocked strip behind Main Street businesses Simply Thai, Wells Fargo and Flare’s Boutique.

Following the regular session, the Council will go into closed session to discuss matters related to attorney-client privilege regarding 2216 Guilford College Road as well as a personnel matter. Due to conflicts, the June meeting has moved from its regular Tuesday position to Thursday, June 23. The public is invited to attend the 6:30 p.m. meeting in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The meeting will be streamed live on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page. www.youtube. com/c/TownofJamestownNC and will be available on the Town website following the meeting.

Word travels fast these days. With the media and social media, it is often only minutes before citizens become aware of an event. The same is not true for most of the 246 years since the United States won its independence from Great Britain and was certainly not true following the end of the Civil War. Enslaved African Americans living in Galveston, Texas, did not learn they had been officially emancipated until approximately two-and-one-half years had elapsed after the war ended. On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas became free, the last state of the Confederacy to learn of the independence, even though President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Texas was the westernmost state in the Confederacy and it took Union troops more than 32 months to spread the

word. General Order No. 3 read, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” This year, June 19 will have a special significance. Not just because it falls on Father’s Day, but because the day is celebrated as Juneteenth. Last year, President Joe Biden declared it a federal holiday, effective in 2022, the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. Juneteenth is officially called Juneteenth

National Independence but is also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day and Black Independence Day. The name is a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth” and is considered the longest-running African-American holiday. It is also called America’s second Independence Day and is not limited to the African-American community. Celebrations often include lectures and exhibitions on African-American culture, public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, the singing of traditional songs and reading of works by noted African-American writers, such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou. Other activities include picnics, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, historical reenactments and blues festivals. It has been celebrated annually since 1865 in various parts of the United States. Since 1979, every state and the District of Columbia have formally recognized the holiday in some way but it was not until see juneteenth, page 2

Experience is the backbone for new pastor’s ministry By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Not only did it take a lot of miles, but it also took a lot of years for Catherine Griffith to make her way from Portland, Ore., to Jamestown, N.C. In the process, there were several stops along the way. Griffith is the new pastor at Jamestown Friends Meeting, a Quaker congregation on Guilford Road. She arrived in March and has since been assimilating into the congregation and learning about the community. Griffith grew up as a Quaker in Portland not realizing that her journey in faith would one day lead her to becoming a pastor. She went to college, but quit to get married and have children. When her children were in school, Griffith returned to college and finished her undergraduate work at the top of her class at the age of 30. “In between all that I had a sense that I should go to seminary and began that right after

Catherine Griffith I graduated from college,” she said. “But after I got a divorce, I thought that meant the end of my dream of ministry. As a female, it was hard to get any job in evangelical Christian Quaker ministry in the ’80s.” Griffith found herself moving more to mainline Quaker beliefs that were similar to other denominations in some respects. While in school, a professor encouraged her to teach and during chaplain training another said she should be a chaplain. With three children to consider, Griffith continued to feel led to ministry and began to submit her resume. She received a call to pastor two smaller meetings simultaneously in Indianapolis, Ind.

“It was difficult to move my family 2,500 miles across country, but it was something I felt led to do,” Griffith said. “I pastored the two meetings for six years until one doubled in size and hired me full time. “I think that congregation would have been happy for me to stay until I retired.” When her youngest child began college, Griffith returned to school herself, taking one class at a time toward a master’s degree in religious studies. When he graduated, she decided to go to grad school full time. In the fall of 1999, she started work on a PhD at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, receiving a degree in the summer of 2004 in applied religion and ethics. For approximately 12 years Griffith taught ethics and religious studies, including online college classes, but she could not get away from that pull to ministry. A friend encouraged her to do interim ministry and it was not long until she received a call from University Friends in Wichita, Kan. She worked there for two years before

receiving a call to become a “settled” pastor at Jamestown Friends. “I felt this was a good match for my ministry,” Griffith said. “The congregation here likes that I can think as well as listen to God and provide spiritual guidance. I can help people think more clearly about difficult issues. “I bring experience and wisdom with me,” Griffith added. “My hope is to help the congregation at Jamestown Friends figure out where it will be in five years and how we can make a real difference in our world today.” Griffith notes that Jamestown Friends is more on the progressive side of Quaker beliefs. In addition to quiet time, the congregation participates in singing and hearing a prepared message. Worship is held each Sunday at 11 a.m. On the second and fourth Sundays, an Adult Forum is held at 10 a.m. with different members of the congregation leading the discussions. “Everybody is welcome here,” Griffith said.

The Jamestown Town Council met in a special meeting June 6 to discuss several items prior to the June 23 regular meeting. In the final month of the current budget year, the Council saved approximately $220,000 by canceling the order for a new garbage truck and thereby canceling the financing. The truck was ordered in 2021 but several delays have made town staff realize it would not come by the end of this fiscal year. Additionally, one piece of golf equipment would not be received by the end of June, so financing for it was also canceled. The Capital Improvement Plan identified the need for a sidewalk to be extended in front of Jamestown Elementary School on Potter Drive to improve the safety of pedestrians crossing at the Brookdale/Potter intersection. When the bids came in, the low bid of $54,925 was approximately $5,000 over the budgeted amount, but the Council unanimously approved hiring the company, Atlantic Contracting Company, Inc., of Greensboro, to construct the sidewalk. Town Manager Matthew Johnson said work should begin June 13 and be completed before school resumes in the fall. The Council unanimously approved a budget amendment to cover the cancelation of the garbage truck and financing for it and the golf equipment as well as the Potter Drive sidewalk project. Tigermoth Creative, LLC, of Greensboro, presented some marketing and branding proposals to the Council. Marketing is part of the Town’s Strategic Plan, adopted June 15, 2021. As part of the background research, the company looked at residential and business options in town, talked to residents and looked at the history in the area, among other things. They discovered four central themes: there are many opportunities to enjoy life and slow down; people feel really good here; how well businesses were crafted and the types of businesses; and the rich historic heritage and how to involve it in marketing. The agency offered two taglines for Council consideration. One received unanimous approval of the three councilmembers in attendance; “Where history and possibility meet.” This tagline will see council, page 2

College reunions take us back in time

Preparing for this month’s 60th reunion of my Davidson College class I thought about a talk I gave in 1997 to my father’s class’s 65th reunion. When those men By d.g. martin One on one first arrived at college in the fall of 1928, they brought everything they needed in a suitcase or small trunk. The Great Depression began the next year, but these men came from the South, which was just about as poor before the stock market crash of 1929 as afterwards. There were automobiles in 1928, but they were not so reliable as now. Not every family owned one. Even if they did, the idea that mother and father could leave the farm or the family business for two or three days to transport a child to college would not have occurred to many families. In 1928, most people traveled distances by train — as they had done since the middle of the 19th Century, when the construction and operation of a passenger train system first made long distance travel convenient. By 1928, trains were safe, reasonably comfortable, and much enjoyed and appreciated. So, when I asked them who rode the train to college that late summer day in 1928, almost every hand shot up. Along with their upraised hands I could see memories pushing out from their faces and their suddenly clear, bright eyes. I could tell. Each of them remembered every detail of that break-awayfrom-home trip. I wanted to stop my speech and listen to each story — to every recollection of packing the trunks and what was in them, how they got to the train stations in their hometowns, who brought them there, how they said

last year that it became a federal holiday. Observance of the occasion has waxed and waned since 1865, with it almost disappearing for many years especially during the Jim Crow era from 1877-1964 and the Great Depression of 1929-39, only to reappear in earnest during the Civil Rights Movement of 1954-1968. It has gained in popularity during the recent focus on racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement. This year, since June 19 falls on a Sunday, federal workers will have the day off on Monday, June 20. Therefore, there will be no mail delivery and government offices and banks will be closed.

Martin Court Apartments at Davidson College — named for D.G. Martin's father. good-bye, what they wore, where they changed trains, whom they met, what they talked about, what they ate, how much money they had in their pockets, how they got from the depot to the college . . . and on and on. Then something struck me — something about the connectiveness of time when we let it sweep us backwards: That late summer train ride in 1928 was closer in time to the end of the Civil War in 1865 than 1997 was to 1928. Sometime during 1928, when these men were freshmen, another college class could have marked its 65th reunion. It would have been the class of 1863. Perhaps a few of them survived the Civil War and the hard times that followed. Perhaps some of that few made their way back to campus — and remembered back in time to the day in the fall of 1859 when they came by wagon or by the newly available railroads to enter college. There is something else about my father’s class that could connect us back to the middle of the 19th Century. Those freshmen of 1928 would have been more comfortable going to

college in the 1860’s than if they had been suddenly thrust forward to the college life of today. What was in one of their trunks in 1928 was very much like the contents of trunk of a young person riding the train to college in the 1860’s — and so much different from all the possessions brought to college by today’s students. I looked out across the faces of the men 65 years out of college. All were more than 85 years old. Memories rose with their uplifted hands and brought back every detail of that train ride to college and were too quickly gone — all gone. Most of their classmates had already finished their time on this earth, including their friend, my father, whose illness, early onset Alzheimer’s, took away forever my chance to hear the story of his train ride from home to college — and all the other things he would have told me if only he could have been there with them celebrating their 65th reunion. D.G. Martin, a lawyer, served as UNC-System’s Vice President for Public Affairs and hosted PBS-NC’s North Carolina Bookwatch.

continued from front be used in a new video, T-shirts, a mural, and other marketing possibilities. Councilmembers offered several ideas of their own. The final proposal is expected to be presented at the June 23 Council meeting. The Council then turned their attention to goals of the Strategic Plan, which is a roadmap for staff and Council over the next three-to-five years. Several goals have already been accomplished, some are nearing completion, some have made moderate-tosignificant progress and new ones have been added. “A lot of goals will be ongoing,” Johnson added. One goal is to update the Facility Use Policy for Jamestown Golf Clubhouse. This item is on the agenda for the June 23 regular meeting. Other goals include to seek marketing

opportunities to promote the town, develop a strategic plan for the Main Street District, update the Solid Waste Collection policy, work with Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department to create a plan for improvements to the Jamestown station, increase internet capabilities at all Town facilities including parks, seek additional revenue sources for street resurfacing, improve and build sidewalk and cycling connectivity, increase compliance in public facilities and work on park infrastructure improvements. Councilmembers offered a few suggestions of their own. Martha Wolfe suggested updating the policy for use of the Civic Center, creating a Citizens’ Academy and give staff a personal security alarm. Lawrence Straughn

added that staff should have continual safety training. He, along with Wolfe and Mayor Lynn Montgomery noted that this item should be made a policy, not a goal. The updated Strategic Plan will be considered for adoption at the June 23 Town Council meeting. Councilmember John Capes was unable to attend the special meeting.

Couch Theatre By demi tAVeRAS Fresh (R) — Some of us know the horrors of modern dating all too well, like Noa, who gets increasingly frustrated with online dating after awful experiences. Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) then meets a doctor named Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and agrees to go out with him. Steve seems funny and different, which Noa finds refreshing. Steve decides to surprise Noa with a getaway to Cottage Grove for a weekend, but when Steve picks Noa up, she realizes that a trip to Cottage Grove would be nowhere in sight for her as Steve’s motives quickly turn sinister. Fresh can be described as a quirky romantic thriller; the two genres blend for an entertainingly unique experience. Bonus points for the cool title credits, which come in around the 30-minute timestamp. (Hulu)

The Bombardment (TV-MA) — During World War II, a Danish boy named Henry wanders upon a taxi mistakenly targeted by a British fighter plane, a car containing four dead bodies. The sight scars Henry so deeply he becomes mute. To help Henry overcome his condition, he’s sent to Copenhagen, where he meets Eva and Rigmor, two schoolgirls who help pull him out of his shell. The film’s point of view then shifts to the relationship between Teresa, a nun at the school, and Frederik, a Gestapo officer who experiences inner conflict about morality. The rest of the film is spent in gut-wrenching action as a British bombing mission acci-

Start making magic with pickle juice By pAtti diAmond DiVaS ON a DiMe If you’ve been buying pickles, eating the pickles, then throwing away the pickle juice, it’s OK. You can forgive yourself. You didn’t know what you were doing. That was then, and this is now. I’m here to beg you. Please! Don’t throw this amazing ingredient down the drain. You’re missing out, because there are so many uses for this wonderful stuff. Pickle juice is simply a concentrated zing of acid, salt and pickling spices that make magic. Not just dill pickles, but sweet pickles, bread and butter pickles, any pickled brine of that ilk. Tossing it is like throwing away really good, flavored vinegar. Here are some uses for this brine divine: The obvious — make more pickles. When you eat all the pickles, add another round of sliced cucumber for a fresh refrigerator pickle. Besides cucumber, try zucchini, carrot, radishes, onion or green beans. Let them hang out for a few days and check the flavor. The longer they sit, the more pickled they’ll become. Add a zing to everything. Add a spoonful of brine to your next batch of tuna, egg or chicken salad. Substitute brine for vinegar in most recipes for extra complexity. Add to water when boiling pasta for pasta salad, or potatoes for potato salad. Use it to deglaze

pans when making pan sauce after sauteing chicken, pork or beef. Use as a tenderizing marinade. Simply add 1/4 cup brown sugar to 1 cup pickle juice to make a marinade for two pounds pork or chicken pieces. Marinade at least 2 hours or up to overnight. Make the best DIY condiments. Recipes follow. DILL PICKLE VINAIGRETTE 3/4 cup dill pickle juice 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon grainy mustard Blend ingredients together, serve on salad. THE SAUCE THAT’S GOOD ON EVERYTHING 2/3 cup sour cream 1/3 cup pickle juice (any kind such as white button or of pickle) cremini, thickly sliced or Salt and pepper, to taste quartered Blend ingredients, season to 3/4 cup brine, strained from a taste and use to dress salad, on jar of dill pickles cooked or raw veggies, or a sauce for meat, poultry or fish. 1. In a large skillet on medium-high heat, melt together 2 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tableMUSHROOMS IN spoons butter. Divide your sliced PICKLE-BRINE BUTTER onion and mushrooms into thirds. rooms to the skillet, they’ll try to absorb the flavorful butter and oil like little sponges. So, move them around the pan quickly so every mushroom gets some goodness.) 2. When golden and delicious, add one-third (1/4 cup) pickle brine and stir until the brine is absorbed, about 1 minute. Transfer the cooked mushrooms to a serving plate and keep warm. 3. Repeat this process twice more with the remaining onions and mushrooms, refraining from eating the mushrooms that you just cooked while no one is watching. We share if we must. You also can add a spoonful of

I’m obsessed with fresh strawberries right now. Sweet to the taste and bright red to the eye, this luscious berry can be tossed into just about anything to turn an ordinary meal into a celebration. Enjoy this prime strawberry season with me, and head out to a pick-your-own field or farmer’s market. En route, challenge your family to think of all the ways you can use your bountiful baskets of juicy berries. As kids shout out their favorites, such as strawberries and waffles, peanut butter and strawberry-jam sandwiches and strawberry ice-cream cones, you’ll discover how the versatile berries can be worked into any meal of the day. Back home, learn new ways to use your bounty — like stirring up strawberryrhubarb jam or strawberry salsa. I like to use strawberries as a garnish; I toss them, along with fresh mint, into a chilled pitcher of water, and I’m always incorporating them in supper salads using other fresh local produce, nuts and cheese. Here is a simple salad that’s a headliner on our Father’s Day lunch menu. Young kids can prep the berries and peppery arugula
