Volunteers wanted for second cleanup day by caroL brooKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Your chance to help preserve a major part of Jamestown history is coming up soon. The Historic Jamestown Society is looking for volunteers to help spruce up the Mendenhall Homeplace on June 29 from 9-11 a.m., rain or shine. Every year, Society members dust, weed, prune and do other maintenance work to the West Main Street site. An earlier work day was canceled. “We will be spiffing up Mendenhall House, Madison Lindsay House, the School House, the Bank Barn, the Museum Building, and the restrooms in preparation for the Village Fair,” said Shirley Haworth, chair of the Facilities Committee. “If our group is large enough, we might be able to give some attention to the grounds.” HJS members will be on hand to work on the project but the Society is asking Jamestown residents interested in preserving the town’s history to join in the task. Those wishing to help are asked to bring their own tools and gloves. Water will be provided.

“Mendenhall Homeplace represents the legacy of a small community of Quaker tradespeople and farmers who actively opposed slavery, promoted universal education and labored to create a life of peace and simplicity in the midst of troubled times,” states mendenhallhomeplace. com. “This authentic Quaker homeplace includes several early 19th century structures such as the Richard Mendenhall House (circa 1811), the Madison Lindsay House (circa 1817 and one of our state’s first medical schools), the James Mendenhall Bank Barn (circa 1820) and North Carolina’s oldest Pennsylvania-style bank barns, and a restored workman’s home that is interpreted as an early one-room school house. Mendenhall Homeplace is also home to one of our nation’s most significant Underground Railroad artifacts, the Stanley-Murrow false-bottom wagon, which was used to help dozens of enslaved people escape north to freedom in the years leading up the Civil War.” If it were not for the Mendenhall family, there would be no Jamestown. Council delays Penny Road Board discusses beautification, sidewalk project connectivity

by caroL brooKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com With several delays in the East Fork Bridge and East Main Street/Lydia sidewalk projects and inactivity on the Oakdale Road sidewalk project, on June 18 the Jamestown Town Council rejected a resolution to start plans for yet another sidewalk project on Penny Road. While the project is still listed as a “must do” in the Capital Improvement Plan, the Council decided it wanted to see progress on the other projects before approving a resolution to set up a Capital Project Fund for the Penny Road project. Councilmember John Capes made a motion to approve the resolution, but other councilmembers in attendance, Rebecca Rayborn and Martha Wolfe, did not second the motion. It died for lack of a second. “Do we have the staff to realistically do this with everything else going on?” Rayborn questioned. Greg Pittman’s goal is to change the world. This is not some lofty, unattainable desire. The entrepreneur is actually doing it – one cup of coffee at a time. Pittman’s business, Cause Roast, has partnered with Charity:Water to help provide clean, safe drinking water to developing countries. He donates 15 percent of his total coffee sales to the non-profit. “There is a symbiotic relationship between clean water and coffee,” Pittman said. “I wanted to help people connect the dots between the two. We take for granted using a coffee maker with water from the tap. Many people cannot do that. At the same time it takes water to grow coffee. “It is ironic that most of the countries that produce coffee are not in an area that has access to clean water.” When starting his busi-

He wanted to create a coffee company that sold a good product, but whose name let people know immediately what the business was all about. “Eventually, I would like to rotate the causes the com-

and apparel. Ready to move forward with his business, Pittman recently created a coffee bus that serves the beverage to satisfy most every conceivable palate. “For as long as I can remember, I have wanted a coffee shop,” Pittman admits. “This is a way to test the market. “Our goal is to be a relational brand, not just a transactional one. It is more than just selling a product. When you build a business around relationships you have a greater opportunity to change the community and impact the lives of those around you. It’s the principle of human interaction – we love and care for others well, even in the way we make coffee.” When Pittman decided to invest in a mobile coffee unit, he wanted something besides an ordinary food truck. Jamestown’s Planning Board sat down on June 10 to discuss several issues vital to the town – the changing landscape of the Main Street business district and an update to the Comprehensive Land Development Plan. The group discussed methods to beautify the Main Street business district. One area the group believed needed to be targeted was the West Main Street/Penny Road intersection. NCDOT is adding a turn lane and curbing to the northeast corner of West Main Street to help with traffic flow and the increased volume that will be generated when the Wrenn Farm development grows. The Town hopes to install a sidewalk on Penny Road to the lake in the future and has it as a “must do” in the 2019-20 Capital Improvement Plan. “Maybe we need to review the landscaping requirements,” said Sherrie Richmond, a member of the Planning Board, in reference to beautifying this area. “We’re a Tree City. Let’s go ahead and put some more trees in.” Board Chair Sarah Glanville added that the Main Street/Oakdale Road intersection needs landscaping. With all the restaurants now in Jamestown, it has become a very visible area, with patrons walking from business to business and from remote parking lots. She added that perhaps a walkability study was needed. Deep River divides Jamestown into two parts, making it seem almost like two separate towns. The High Point City Lake Park – which looks like it is in Jamestown but is really in High Point – and the historic Mendenhall Homeplace break up the flow of businesses. The topic that has come up several times over the years is how to connect the businesses on both sides of the river. “We’ve been talking for a while how to make that side of Main Street feel connected to the other side,” Glanville said. “To feel more a part of Jamestown.” “That end of Jamestown should have the same flavor as the heart of Jamestown, the same character,” said Board member Ed Stafford. “The new Magnolia on Main development [across from Flowers Bakery] … [the people] are going to be walkers,” said Eddie Oakley, a member of the Board. “I think we need to address the west side of Jamestown.” “Once they finish that, it will be a visual improvement on that side of the street,” said Board member Bob Lichauer. Stafford noted that the new residents moving into

Council passes budget of nearly $11 million By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

The Jamestown Town Council unanimously approved the 2019-20 budget and Capital Improvement Plan on June 18. The budget weighs in at $10,836,284 and is 3.85 percent higher than the previous budget. There will be no tax increase for the upcoming fiscal year, continuing the rate of $.468 per $100 evaluation. The Ad valorem property tax revenues are estimated to be approximately $2, 007,000. An increase of 3.5 percent is seen in the Water & Sewer Fund. This is due to an increase in the rate the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority charges the Town to purchase water. Sewer rates remain the same this year but the

Town anticipated the 202021 fiscal year budget would be lower. Water and Sewer fees are projected to bring in approximately $3,983,600 in revenue. Personnel expenses are $2,357,515, or 21.8 percent of the total budget. Capital outlay – vehicles, equipment, buildings and improvements – total $2,284,000, or 21.1 percent of the total budget. This includes a new entrance sign near the Penny Road/ West Main Street intersection, updates to the Comprehensive Plan, work on phase two of the Oakdale Road sidewalk project, construction of a new recreational maintenance facility, crosswalk improvements, a sound system for the civic center, driving range improvements, flood lights at Town Hall and Jamestown’s portion of improvements to the Eastside Sewer

Treatment Plant and Riverdale pump station. Other capital outlay expenses include the East Fork Sidewalk and Pedestrian Bridge project ($1,711,459), East Main Street/Lydia sidewalk ($850,000) and phase three of the Oakdale sidewalk ($675,000). The East Fork and Main Street projects are mainly funded through federal and state grants. “We have projected revenues on a very conservative basis,” said Judy Gallman, finance director.

Vice-chair Art Wise noted the large number of pedestrian traffic that crosses Main Street from Courtyard Commons to Walgreen’s. Lichauer remarked how many people use the town’s sidewalks. “There’s more pedestrian traffic there than I realized,” he said. Talk then briefly turned to bike lanes. Jamestown resident Wid Painter has addressed the Town Council several times about the need for bike paths. The Jamestown Bypass will bring changes to the traffic flow of Jamestown, but the impact won’t be known until the road is completed. The Board will consider having another traffic study done in the future. The Town has plans to update the Comprehensive Land Development Plan within the year. It was last updated in 2007. “We need to look at what we did (in the current plan), what was implemented and what wasn’t, why there were changes, etc.,” Glanville said. In other business, Oakley mentioned the need for more handicapped parking in Jamestown. “There is only one space per business,” he said. Planning Director Matthew Johnson said the number is set by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Town has

We do want to have it happen,” said Capes. “If we do throw a block in the middle of this, don’t we hold it back?” “You’re not committed to award the project,” said Cole.

“I think we need to slow down on these sidewalk projects,” Wolfe said, “until we see these three projects we’re working on currently get started.” Capes disagreed, saying he thought the town should go ahead and see that project through so the framework was in place. He didn’t see any any harm in that. Even though the resolution did not pass, there is still a possibility that it could arise later for consideration. The Town received a Federal Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) grant

of $400,000 in 2017 for the project and would be required to match the grant with $100,000. The Penny Road sidewalk would complete a loop around Jamestown that could be enjoyed by walkers and cyclists. It would connect with the Bicentennial Greenway at the Piedmont Environmental Center. Public Services Director Paul Blanchard reported on progress on the sidewalks. There is a new bid date for the East Main Street project, following earlier bid dates that did not garner the required three bids. Plans for the East Fork Pedestrian bridge are still in the hands of the NCDOT. Blanchard believes the bridge itself has been approved, but NCDOT is requesting changes to the approaches. He was scheduled to meet with NCDOT as well as the construction company this past Thursday. He now believes work could begin in July. Wolfe questioned why there have been several delays since everything had already been approved. “At this stage we should not be told that we have something to be reviewed,” Blanchard said. “We’re trying to get it back on track as soon as we can and as costeffective as we can.” “I’m frustrated that this project was approved and now we’re looking at a situation,” Cole said. “I think it would be reasonable to ask if [NCDOT] would fast-track it once they get the reports,” said

no jurisdiction to ask existing businesses to expand handicapped parking. A check online indicates that ADA 2010 Standards are for a minimum of one handicap-accessible parking space per up to 25 spaces in a lot, plus a minimum of one van-accessible space. “The 2010 Standards require two vanaccessible spaces, but the store does not have to modify its parking lot to provide the additional space until the lot undergoes a planned alteration (restriping, re-surfacing, etc.).” (https:// adata.org/factsheet/parking) Lichauer mentioned that people park beside van-accessible spaces, leaving no room for a wheelchair lift to be lowered from the van. Johnson said he would follow up on the problem. Oakley also brought up the speed limit and noted that speeding on Guilford Road is bad. Town Manager Kenny Cole said that the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office will report on neighborhood safety at the June Town Council meeting. Tractor trailers coming through the center of Jamestown are a problem, said Oakley. He hoped there was a way the Town could stop these large vehicles coming through town once the bypass is completed. Since the meeting was just for discussion, no action was taken and Glanville said she would talk further with town staff on ways to implement the ideas put forward by the Planning Board.

continued from front Mayor Lynn Montgomery. In other business: Capt. Pruitt of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office reported that the department has increased patrols of Forestdale Drive after two drive-by shootings occurred within two days of each other in March. However, Pruitt said the crime rate in Jamestown is down. A speed trailer has been positioned in several areas of town to check the rates of speed of vehicles. Mayor Montgomery presented a resolution to Micah Marston who has served as Ragsdale High School’s student representative to the Town Council for the past year. The Council also approved a resolution honoring retiring GTCC President Dr. Randy Parker for his years of service to the college. The Council approved a new lease for equipment at the golf course and the audit contract with Dixon Hughes Goodman. After approximately one hour of the public session, the Town Council went into closed session to consider the qualifications, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment, or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee or prospective public officer or employee. When the public session re-convened, the Council set the town manager’s salary at $99,000 with a $500 travel allowance.

questions. After researching vehicles he could convert to a coffee bus, he opted for a Volkswagen van. “My dad grew up driving a Volkswagen Beetle and I heard about a guy in Australia who lived in a VW bus and served coffee out of it for fun. “I realized that type of vehicle communicated a lot of what we wanted our business to be. It represented simplicity, looked fun-loving and made people smile. It also got attention because you do not see a lot of them around any more.” Pittman brought his Volkswagen from someone in Las Vegas and had it shipped to the Jamestown area. Then came the task of trying to retrofit it to serve coffee. “There are no playbooks like there are for traditional food trucks,” he said smiling. “We had to make it up as we went along. I did much of the work myself, but had lots of help from family and friends.” For major reconstruction of the bus, Pittman credits East Coast Autowerks in High Point, which helped with the roof and cut out the panel for a service bar, and Owensby Enterprises in Greensboro who welded extra support inside the vehicle and created a custom trailer hitch so the bus could pull a generator. “We serve everything you could get at a walk-in coffee shop,” Pittman said. “We also have some specialty drinks we created ourselves.” Pittman says he got his coffee degree from the

But wisdom also comes from hiring the best and he thinks he has found that in barista Hannah Leigh, who not only creates amazing coffee, but coordinates events and catering. “She is a rock star at what she does,” Pittman said. Cause Roast can be found in front of the Healthy House 56 in Jamestown, weather permitting, Monday-Friday mornings. On weekends it participates in food-truck festivals, corporate events, weddings and other parties. Lynn Tice, owner of the Healthy House 56, plans to change her business model somewhat to include healthy desserts and ice cream, wine by the glass, coffee and tea, and wants to bring Cause Roast inside. “It is the best coffee I have every tasted,” she said. “We are very intentional in how we make our drinks,” Pittman acknowledged. I think that time and care makes a difference in how it tastes.”

Charity: Water

Clean water can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school. Although the water crisis is huge in developing countries, Charity:Water believes it is solvable. The organization joins local experts and community members to find the best sustainable solution to a community’s water needs, whether it’s a well, a piped system, a BioSand Filter, or a system for harvesting rainwater. With every water point funded, the group’s partners coordinate sanitation and hygiene training and establish a local Water Committee to help keep water flowing for years to come. Greg Pittman is donating 15 percent of his total coffee sales to support Charity:Water.

The climate trap for Democrats by rIcH LoWry The more the climate debate changes, the more it stays the same. Polls show that the public is worried about climate change, but that doesn’t mean it is ready to bear any burden or pay any price to combat it. If President Donald Trump claws his way to victory again in Pennsylvania and the Upper Midwest, his path will likely go through abortion and climate change, two issues on which the Democrats are most confident in their righteousness and willing to embrace radical policies that appeal to their own voters much more than anyone else. Joe Biden, the relative moderate, is subject to these forces. He dumped his longtime support for the Hyde Amendment prohibiting federal funding of abortion and released a climate plan that, even if more modest than the “Green New Deal” (a low bar), is clearly derived from it. There’s no doubt that climate is a top-tier issue for Democrats. In a CNN poll, 96 percent of Democrats say it’s very important that candidates support “taking aggressive action to slow the effects of climate change.” It’s doubtful that mom, baseball and apple pie would poll any higher. Among the broader public, according to a survey by climate change programs at Yale and George Mason universities, 70 percent believe that climate change is happening, and 57 percent believe that humans are causing it. It’s easy to overinterpret these numbers, though. An Associated Press/University of Chicago poll asked people how much they were actually willing to pay to fight climate change, and 57 percent said at least $1 a month, or not even the cost of a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

The political experience of other advanced democracies is a flashing red light. In Australia last month, the liberal opposition lost what was supposed to be “the climate change” election, against all expectations. Polling showed that about 60 percent of Australians thought the government should address climate change “even if this involves significant costs.” It turned out that it was one thing to tell that to pollsters and another to vote to make it happen. In France, gas and diesel hikes as part of a government plan to reduce carbon emissions by 75 percent sparked the yellow vest movement in car-dependent suburbs and towns, and had to be ignominiously reversed. The politics of climate change will be problematic for the duration, for several reasons. The voters most opposed to the costs of climate action tend to be “deplorables” most easily dismissed by center-left parties at their own peril: voters in rural Queensland in Australia, economically distressed residents of unfashionable rural and semiurban areas of France, working-class voters in the Rust Belt in the U.S. Bearing real costs for the sake of the climate will always be a sucker’s game for any one country so long as there isn’t a global mandate for emission reductions. Finally, whatever the costs, no one is going to feel any climate benefits anytime soon, or likely ever. The supposed upside of plausible policies adopted by the U.S. would be minuscule changes in the global temperature decades from now. All this should counsel caution rather than apocalyptic rhetoric and policies, although Trump has every reason to hope it doesn’t. Camping with your pet by saM MaZZotta Paw’S corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I want to go camping with my dog “Tinney.” I’ve never been camping before, and I overheard someone at a party saying that dogs weren’t allowed at campgrounds. Is this true? How can I bring Tinney along with me? — James in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR JAMES: While some campgrounds expressly do not allow pets, others are fine with them — as long as you follow their rules. Most campgrounds require dogs to be kept on a leash at all times, and that you always pick up your pet’s poop. Here are a few tips to make your first camping trip with Tinney a fun time: — Check with campgrounds in the area to make sure they allow pets. If a state or federal campground prohibits them, a private campground may be a good option. — Bring everything you need for Tin-

ney: A food and water bowl, sleeping pad, leash, medications, his pet food and a doggy sweater in case it gets cold. — Purchase a tent that will fit both you and Tinney: a 3-person tent should be roomy enough. — Make sure Tinney is safe in your car as you travel to the campsite, either in a travel kennel or in a pet restraint. If you drive a pickup truck, do not tie him on a leash within the truck bed, ever. — Keep Tinney near you at all times. Remember, you’re responsible for him, even if you’re camping with a group. — Check Tinney’s fur and paws daily for ticks, fleas, thorns or other debris. — Make sure he gets plenty of water throughout the day and take the time to rest and play with Tinney so he enjoys the experience! Our celebration traditions have changed now that my daughter does most of the cooking, and my son-in-law does the grilling for our family gatherings at their home. These days, all I typically have to do is bring something to add to the meal, enjoy the day with the people I love the most, eat and return home to a clean kitchen! Hooray! The history of our country’s July Fourth celebration is fascinating! “No taxation without representation!” That was the battle cry of the 13 colonies in America that were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III with no representation in Parliament. As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell any signs of rebellion, and repeated attempts by the colonists to resolve the crisis without war proved fruitless. On June 11, 1776, the colonies’ Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, formed a committee to draft a document that would formally sever ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the document. (Nevertheless, a total of 86 changes were made to his draft.) The Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4. Copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed the next day, and on July 6, The Pennsylvania Evening Post became the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document.

The Declaration of Independence has since become our nation’s most cherished symbol of liberty. On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks. The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks. Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of 1812 with Great Britain. Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday, but with full pay for federal employees. Today, communities across the nation mark this major summer holiday with parades, firework displays, picnics and the playing of the “The StarSpangled Banner” and marches by John Philip Sousa. The most important part of this classic celebration is recognizing the blessing of being an American! Cool off your hot Independence Day celebration with tall glasses of this deliciously patriotic Red, White, Blue and Lemonade, Too! recipe. Happy Fourth of July! RED, WHITE, BLUE AND LEMONADE, TOO! I love fresh lemonade, but I hate squeezing out the juice! Using the method in this recipe to process the lemons saves time and energy.

3 cups sugar 3 cups water 15 lemons, plus 3 lemons for slicing into rings for decoration 12 strawberries, hulled and sliced into quarters 1/2 cup blueberries, washed 12 fresh mint sprigs, optional 1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the sugar dissolves, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and cool completely. 2. Cut off both ends of each lemon, and discard. Cut each lemon into four to five thick slices. Put about 2 cups of the sliced lemons at a time, along with 1/2 cup of cold water into the food

processor or blender and turn it on high for 2-3 minutes. 3. Pour the ground lemons into a mesh strainer placed over a large bowl. Remove any large pieces of the lemon rind and discard. Press out the juice with the back of a large spoon. Repeat this process until all of the lemons have been ground up and the juice pressed out to make about 3 cups of lemon juice. 4. In a large pitcher, combine the lemon juice, 3 cups of the cooled sugar syrup and 6 cups cold water. Stir well to combine. Taste the mixture and add more cold water or more of the remaining sugar syrup to adjust sweetness to taste. Refrigerate until chilled. 5. Add equal amounts of the

strawberries and blueberries to each glass. Add ice and fill each glass with the lemonade. Place a slice of lemon on the rim of the glass and top with a sprig of mint, if desired. Makes 10-12 (8-ounce) glasses.
