Third plan for Jamestown Park meets with approval

The Parks & Recreation Steering Committee got a look at the third possible plan for Jamestown Park during a virtual meeting May 22. Included in this plan by McAdams Company is a renovated basketball court, sand volleyball court, new shelters, an inclusive playground for all ages and abilities, gated small-dog park, gated large-dog park, shelter for dog owners renovated restrooms, a trail around most of the site and a nature playground in the wooded area. This area is where the current playground and shel-

ters are located, to the right of the entrance to the golf course. Where the ball fields currently are located would be a fitness park usable for concerts or other events, area for a farmer’s market, a flexible open air pavilion, fitness loop, fitness wall (also usable for a stage or art wall), grassed terraces for exercise or sitting, play berms, indoor and outdoor fitness areas and restrooms. This area is to the right of the large parking area near the ball fields. The committee asked to remove the splash pad featured in the earlier sketches. The entire park would be ADA accessible and could include new steps or a ramp

from the golf course parking lot to the new fitness area. Like the previous plans the committee viewed on May 5, this proposal does not include ball fields. Diamondback Investment Company has submitted plans for the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads and has offered to construct, at their expense, three ball fields (two baseball, one softball) and parking. Once completed, these areas would be donated to the Town of Jamestown. There are currently two fields at Jamestown Park so Diamondback’s offer would increase the number of fields SEE PARk, PAGe 2

GtCC asks for bond referendum for renovations

It is often said that freedom is not free. Indeed, it comes with a price – sometimes NORMA B. DENNIS with the loss of ndworddesign@gmail.com lives or at the least the loss of time spent with loved ones. When visiting Guilford Memorial Cemetery on Memorial Day, I stopped by a special section for veterans that honors those who strived to preserve the freedoms we have as Americans. An older Army veteran stood by himself playing taps beside a flag lowered to half-staff. Although every note was not perfect, I can honestly say I have never heard it played more beautifully or with more feeling. To this gentleman and to all who have served, are serving or will serve, I thank you.

JPC members use parades to connect By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Senior Recognition Sunday at Jamestown Presbyterian Church is going to look a bit different this year. To begin with, it is going to be held on a Saturday – June 13 at 11 a.m. to be exact – and it will also be outside. “Each graduate will have his or her own station spread out along the church parking lot,” Pastor Jay Smith explained. “The stations will include decorated tents and small flags featuring the graduate’s school colors and a picture of the individual. After the event, the graduates can have their flag as a keepsake.” The plan is to have family and friends drive through in a parade format to cheer the graduates for their accomplishments. Parade participants will be able to present cards and notes to graduates as they wish. The JPC Congregational Life committee has created cards to make sure everyone is acknowledged. “We will also recognize students graduating from the fifth and eighth grades at the parade, but the main attraction will be our seniors,” Smith said. “Many have grown up in the church and it is a privilege to honor them and to show them they are still

It is special to help them embark on the next chapter of their lives in this way.” The parade to recognize graduates is actually the third in which JPC members have participated since they stopped meeting in church due to the coronavirus. At the first one, they surprised the pastor and his staff with a parade in their honor. “The secretary was in on it,” Smith said. “She tried to lure me outside by telling me to come look at a large lizard that was trying to get into the church.

When I came out, here came all these decorated vehicles with people honking and waving. Some drove through and came back through a second time. It was a powerful moment for my staff and me and brought tears to the eyes. “It showed the love of this church and was special to me as a pastor.” Smith was due to take a sabbatical but opted to postpone that during the pandemic. “I was not sure how to lead these SEE jPC, PAGe 2

GTCC President Dr. Anthony Clarke wants help … and he’s asking local governments to support him in his mission. Clarke, who has led GTCC for only seven months – the last three under COVID-19 restrictions – wants the Guilford County Commissioners to add an $86 million bond referendum to the ballot in November. The amount would go toward capital improvements to all five GTCC campuses, including Jamestown. The East Main Street campus has been targeted for $18,100,000 of the bond amount, or approximately 21 percent. Clarke said specific plans would be drawn up after the bond is approved. Plans began on the original proposal for the school in March 2019 when the school’s board began working on a 10-year facilities plan. That proposal, for $151 million, went before the County Commissioners in February of this year and has since been reduced approximately 50 percent. “We prioritized our requests,” Clarke said. “The college has done a good job taking care of its buildings,” Clarke said. “We don’t have any decrepit buildings, but we do have buildings that need updating.” Davis Hall, constructed in 1984 is slated for renovation, as is Williams Hall (1976), Gerrald Hall (1970) and the Community Training Center (1985), all on the Jamestown main campus. Many of these buildings have aging HVAC, infrastructure and ADA issues. These buildings have not been renovated since construction.

Renovations to Medlin Campus Center, constructed on the Jamestown campus in the 1970s, began in early 2019 and are expected to be complete in the summer of 2021. “We want to bring 21st century education to these buildings,” Clarke said. “We want to provide better classroom space, better labs, better technology as well as better energy use and costs.” “The estimated economic impact is $1,092,000,” he said, noting that 4,000 students each semester use these buildings and that there has been a 3 percent increase in retention and graduation rates. Included in the proposal are new classroom buildings on the Aviation and High Point campuses, a CDL/truck driving training program, a new public safety training building, and an expansion of the existing public safety building. Also included in the bond request is a land acquisition line item, which Clarke said is for future growth as contiguous properties become available in Jamestown. “We’re proud to be in Jamestown. We want to improve and be a good neighbor in Jamestown.” In his presentation to local governments, including the Jamestown Town Council, Clarke remarked SEE gTCC, PAGe 2

on the economic impact the college has on the community: $1 billion total economic impact on Guilford County; 31,296 individuals served; 15,086 jobs supported (1 out of every 25 jobs in the county is supported by the college and its students); $9,100 increase in earnings every year compared with a person with a high school diploma or equivalent; over $616 million increased earnings for GTCC students; and, taxpayers receive a cumulative value of $3.60 for every $1 invested in the school. (Figures from fiscal year 2018-19.) “This would be an estimated 22 percent annual return on an $86 million investment,” Clarke said in his presentation. The proposed bond referendum is in tandem with the Guilford County Schools referendum in November, but Clarke stressed it was a separate referendum. “When the County funds the educational system in Guilford County, it not only funds the county’s schools, but also funds GTCC,” Clarke said. “I thought it was important to pursue bond funding for the college along with the Guilford County schools in separate referendums. “Guilford County Schools would benefit from the community training,” he added. “I’m asking for the Town Council’s support in this endeavor. A resolution of support would be helpful.” Councilmembers nodded approval of Clarke’s presentation to local governments but were not willing to endorse it at this time. “I want to wait and see what happens with the Guilford County School bond,” said Councilmember Martha Wolfe. Councilmember Lawrence Straughn agreed.

people during this time,” he said. “This parade was so powerful, it encouraged me.” Church leaders are working on ways to meet the needs of members and the community in the future. Although they look forward to gathering together as a congregation, technology will likely play a part in those plans. “Normally we have about 400 attend church on Sunday,” Smith said. “On Easter Sunday, 1,100 people watched the service.” For years, JPC has sponsored a food pantry to assist those in need. Volunteers from the church deliver food to approximately 250 families every week. At Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter they provide an entire holiday meal. The church works in conjunction with Church World Service, Family Service of the Piedmont and with social workers from area schools. Because so many people are out of work at this time,

the need for food has been heightened. “A lot of food has been going out,” Smith said. “Our pantry gets cleaned out as soon as it gets filled. We decided to have a drivethru food collection. People really responded with all types of food and paper products, as well as diapers and wipes. Seventy-five cars came through with all sorts of stuff. “I was one of the people who wore a mask and gloves to get things out of the cars, and later that same day I got to deliver food to a family.” Although church members have always supported the food pantry, Smith feels the scarcity of many items on grocery shelves at this time has opened the eyes of everyone to the need to help others. Are there more parades in the future for JPC? That is yet to be seen. But one thing is likely – members will always try to find a way to connect.

ed to be on the Council’s June 16 agenda. “Are there contingencies for the ball field [area] if the PUD or sale [of the Johnson property] does not go through?” asked committee member Jim Tobin. “The fields are not in good shape and used only for practice,” said Matthew Johnson, Jamestown planning director. He added that lighting for the fields could cost approximately a quarter of a million dollars. “It’s not a good use of the area.” Jamestown Youth League uses the fields and Johnson mentioned that the town has no desire to impact JYL operations. He added that development of the Johnson prop-

erty is several years in the future and is not firm. “My answer now is, we don’t know what will happen, but the Johnson property will be before this.” The three concepts are the result of a survey conducted by McAdams last year to learn what the town was looking for in the way of park amenities. The top four facilities/amenities were: dog park, fitness walking loops, senior center and community gardens. The vote by the P&R Steering Committee was unanimous for the third proposal, with a few minor changes suggested at this meeting. Johnson wants to present the concept to the Town Council at its June 16 meet-

ing. Once the Council voices approval, the Town can begin the process of applying for a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant from the state. “Nothing happens quickly,” Johnson said about the grant process. “It moves at the speed of government. At a minimum, it’s a 3-5 year plan to get funding.” All work will not be done at once, but the project will be phased in. The golf course is not included in this plan but Johnson said the Town would like to look at it in the future. He added that the Town would offer naming opportunities for park amenities as it has down with Wrenn Miller Park and benches around the town.

Area Deaths & Funerals Nancy Wagoner Young Greensboro – Nancy Wagoner Young passed away Friday, May 29 at Moses Cone Hospital. She was born on April 13, 1927 to Mont Clair Wagoner and Katie Troxler Wagoner. She lived in Monticello, North Carolina, until attending Women’s College (now UNCG) where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She taught fifth grade in High Point City schools until her marriage. In 1983, she earned her Master’s Degree in Education from UNCG and taught for one more year after that. She is still remembered fondly by many of her former students who would stop and speak to her while eating lunch at Kepley’s in High Point. Nancy married William Elmer Young in 1953, and they had two children, Rebecca Young Hampton (Ron) and Craig Ellis Young. She is predeceased by both her husband and her son. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, and two granddaughters who she dearly loved – Elizabeth Leisinger (Jason) of Evergreen, Colorado, and Caroline Cox (Michael) of Charlotte, and three great-granddaughters – Eloise Nancy Leisinger, Dorothy Claire Leisinger, and Charlie Evelyn Cox. She took great joy in getting to hold and play with each of these grandbabies, even if for only a little while. She is also survived by one sister, Joan Hinsaw. Nancy was a member of the Christian Science Church of High Point, and later the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Greensboro. She served in almost every leadership position in the two churches including First Reader and Second Reader for several terms. A deeply spiritual person, she lived her love for God and Christ, and shared that love with those around her. Nancy was an active gardener

and loved flowers, planting, and harvesting. She is known for her beautiful iris beds at her home in High Point where many visitors stopped by each spring to admire them. Having never met a stranger, she always welcomed anyone who wanted to see her gardens. In the early 1970’s, she was asked to serve on the Piedmont Environmental Advisory Board. At the time, there was no recycling program in Guilford County, and she saw a need for this service. Nancy was instrumental in bringing recycling to Guilford County. A creative person, she took up basket making later in life and made hundreds of high quality baskets that she sold at art stores, guilds, and craft fairs. Nancy was also a friend who took care of her friends. Often she’d make applesauce cupcakes or homemade soup to take to an elderly friend, or just as an “I’m thinking of you” gesture. Perhaps her favorite recipient of her baked goods was her nextdoor neighbor, Brad Bulla, whom she always declared was the best neighbor anyone could ever have. The family wants to extend thanks to Home Instead Senior Care for providing caregivers that allowed her to stay in her home until age 92. Special thanks go to Kay Flannery and Teresa Brewster who were special caregivers while she was at home. Also, many thanks go to Carriage House Memory Care for taking care of her the last year of her life. They understood her love of laughter and kept her entertained and happy. A private graveside service will be held at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point. Online condolences for the Young family may be made at www.sechrestfunerals.com

“This plant is heavy,” said young school-age neighbor Sylvia to her mom as they each carried a honeyberry plant they had purchased at our local nursery to their backyard garden. “Why did we get two big honeyberry plants instead of one?” she continued. “To grow luscious honeyberries, we need to have both of them so they can pollinate to bear fruit. Mine is a Tundra Honeyberry, and you are carrying a Berry Blue Honeyberry, the important pollinator,” continued her mom, Kari. “If we had only one plant, we wouldn’t get the berries we want to snack on and use for jam or bake into Mom Kari and her school-age kids dig in the dirt planting their suma pie.” “Lessons in the garden mer raised vegetable and berry gardens. are bountiful,” said Kari to me over the fence. “When we garden and grow your own to your vegetable plants. dig our shovels in the dirt and food, do it now! Couch Theatre By AMy ANdERSON This week, I’m taking a break from my regularly scheduled programming. Social distancing and staying home have all of us playing remote control king and queen of the couch, but as the temperature outside steadily climbs, my thoughts have been straying to classic summer adventures. Here are five great movies that you can stream for summer vibes safely from your sofa: American Graffiti — The 1973 classic by Francis Ford Coppola is a coming of age story for a group of high school graduates on the last night of summer in Modesto, California. The

lives of drag racers, daydreamers, hoods and romantics intertwine — Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) enlists a radio DJ in his pursuit of a hot blonde in a T-Bird (Suzanne Somers); Steve and Laurie (Ron Howard and Cindy Williams) fight and make up again. One Crazy Summer — Ah, the timeless love story of Hoops McCann (John Cusack), an insecure, failed basketball player who must illustrate a love story in order to apply to art school, and Cassandra Eldridge (Demi Moore), a gutsy guitar-wielding musician on a mission to save her grandfather’s house from the stuffy Beckersted

ball from his dad, and then loses it over the fence, the boys must face a giant beast to get it back. If you haven’t seen this film, then “You’re killing me, Smalls.”

Disney

Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell in Teen Beach Movie stolen kisses and generally have a great time learning lessons and cementing lifelong friendships in this 1993 sleeper. When Scotty Smalls moves to town, he takes up baseball, joining a cast of characters that includes Benny the Jet, Ham, Squints The Sandlot — A group and Yeah-Yeah. They play of boys hang out, cruise the at an empty lot, but when local community pool for Smalls borrows a special family. Unfolding on Nantucket, this 1984 charmer was written and directed by Savage Steve Holland, and features iconic ‘80s actors Curtis Armstrong, Bobcat Goldthwait, Joel Murray and even Jeremy Piven.

Teen Beach Movie — This one is straight out of the Disney channel, and couldn’t be stickier or sweeter if it tried. Best friend surfers (Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell) find a necklace on the beach, which whisks them away on the waves and straight into a beach party musical, complete with a goody two shoes who falls for a biker gang gal — or should have until the newcomers arrive to muck it up. They’ll have to work together to make things right

in order to get back home. Packed with all the catchy tunes you’d expect from a Disney TV musical.

Wet Hot American Summer — This 2001 cult treat is set in 1981 Camp Firewood, a Jewish summer camp anchored by head counselor Beth (Janeane Garofalo). While she’s busy falling for the local astrophysicist (David Hyde Pierce), the other counselors and campers find friendship, the agony of a good love triangle and bug bites. It’s heavy on sketch comedy, parody and warped nostalgia, and is definitely not for the kiddos. ©2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
