Tracking animals by their skulls, tracks and scat By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

We’re all familiar with going for a walk and stepping into evidence that an animal has passed before us. Ugh! Not a happy sight on sidewalks and other pedestrian pathways. But these “droppings,” or “scat,” are important to naturalists who study wildlife. Scat, skulls and tracks indicate what types of animals inhabit the area. A recent program at the Piedmont Environmental Center gave some key insights into how anyone can determine what type of animal has passed by just by the marks it leaves. The threat of rain canceled a scheduled walk on the grounds to find actual traces. Heather Key, a naturalist

at PEC, led the program and while it seemed to be aimed toward the several children in attendance, the adults also learned a lot from her demonstrations. “The point of this program is to get you out more so when you are in your back yard, on a nature trail or out camping, you can spot those different animal identification signs,” Key said. “The most prevalent animals in this area are deer, possum, raccoon, heron and gray squirrel.” She added the coyotes, which many Jamestown residents have noticed, have declined in population in recent years. Key passed out several papers describing such items as teeth, prints and, um, droppings, left by different animals. She noted that carnivores, such as bobcat and

both types of teeth. Based on the teeth and other characteristics, Key invited participants to look over some skulls she had collected to determine the animal. A handsee skulls, page 3

Galuski honored for service to JMS Builders Club By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

The end of the school year brings many activities to a close – classes, clubs, sporting events. For Julie Galuski, however, it is more than a summer hiatus until school resumes in the fall. Galuski will close an entire chapter in her life as a teacher at Jamestown Middle School and an advisor for the school’s Builders Club, a Kiwanis service organization. She and her husband are moving to Florida where he will work as a Photos by Norma B. Dennis coach with his alma mater. The group opted to change its end-of-the-year family banquet to a picnic on May 24 at the Field of Honor in Kernersville. Co-advisers Linda Magley, a JMS teacher and Bill Cegles, a Kiwanis member, knew this was the opportune time to thank Galuski for her 12 years of service to the club. The club began in 2007 when Lora Farlow was looking for a school activity her daughter Cara could join. “Sixth grade students were not allowed to participate in sports,” Galuski explained. see jms, page 3

What’s happening with downtown Jamestown? What do you think needs improvement? How will the new bypass affect business? These and other questions will be under consideration June 10 at the Jamestown Planning Board meeting during a discussion titled “Making Plans for the Changing Landscape of the Main Street Business District.” With work steadily progressing on the bypass, town officials believe it is time to begin considering how diverting Main Street traffic will impact how customers come to businesses – and how these businesses will survive. Also under discussion is the town’s 102-page 2020 Comprehensive Land Development Plan. Since the plan was written in 2007, the town has annexed several areas and has seen considerable growth near the Jamestown Parkway/Gate City Boulevard/ Guilford College Road area and current construction on West Main Street near Penny Road, not to mention a re-invention of businesses along the downtown area. According to the summary, “This plan serves as a guide for the community in making land development decisions and is intended to provide for the orderly growth and development of the Town.” The purpose of the plan is in four parts: A Source of Information, A Guide to Likely Government Decisions, An Opportunity for Community Involvement and An Outline for Strategic Actions. The plan’s mission includes building “the town’s historic heritage, diversify our local economy; fit our community’s small-town character; preserve our cherished natural, cultural and historic resources; enhance our quality of life; and be consistent with our ability to provide adequate public services and infrastructure.” Copies of the Comprehensive Plan as well as an 18-page summary are available at https://www.jamestownnc.gov/downloads. If you are interested in either of these discussions, the Planning Board urges residents and business owners to attend the meeting June 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.

Historic Society looking for Village Fair vendors, sponsors The 17th annual Village Fair at Mendenhall Homeplace is less than two months away, on Saturday, July 20. The Historic Jamestown Society is looking for exhibitors, crafters and vendors for the event. “The Village Fair offers a terrific opportunity for participants to exhibit and market their talents in various trades, crafts and other artistic and heritage-based endeavors,” said Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace, “while helping to raise much needed funds for Mendenhall Homeplace and its parent organization, Historic Jamestown Society. “There will be no booth fees charged for those who will not be selling items or services. However, we are

asking vendors who offer items for sale to contribute a portion of their sales (at least 15 percent) to the Historic Jamestown Society. As a private, nonprofit organization, we rely upon individual donations to interpret and preserve the heritage of Mendenhall Homeplace and the community of Jamestown.” Sponsorships are also available in the $25-99, $100-249, $250-499 and $500-plus ranges. Volunteers are needed to help HJS with set-up, break-down, traffic control and other needed duties. Contact Rogers at 336454-3819 or email director@mendenhallhomeplace.com if you want to be a vendor/craftsman, want to sponsor or are able to volunteer. Village Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and parking is across the street

Quaker meetings in Guilford County, then and now BY LINDA WILLARD JameStowN frieNdS meetiNg When the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) establish a monthly meeting, we do so with the expectation that it will be an active meeting for years to come. Some Quaker meetings in Guilford County, North Carolina have been in existence for hundreds of years. New Garden Friends meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina was established in 1764, that’s 260 years as a friends meeting. New Garden meeting was founded by Quakers from New Garden Friends meeting in Pennsylvania. Centre Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina was established in 1772, that is 247 years as an active Quaker meeting. Springfield Friends in High Point, North Carolina was founded in 1773, that’s 246 years as an active Quaker meeting. Next is, Deep River Friends meeting in High Point, North Carolina. Deep River meeting was founded in 1778, that makes Deep River meeting 241 years old. These meetings are followed by much “younger meetings” such as Friendship meeting, Concord meeting, and First Friends in Greensboro, North Carolina and High Point Friends meeting and Oak Hill meeting, both in

High Point, North Carolina and Jamestown Friends meeting in Jamestown, North Carolina. These meetings have survived opposition to wars, slavery, and others have survived a population ever on the move. Other meetings have not been as fortunate. Dover Friends meeting in Colfax, North Carolina was established I815 and laid down (discontinued in 1899). There is no definitive information regarding the demise of Dover Friends meeting. Perhaps it was due to a population shift, or maybe just a lack of interest in the members, many of the older members who were the pillars of the meeting may have died leaving the meeting without their support. The only thing left of Dover Friends meeting is an overgrown cemetery with tombstones bearing such notable names as: Benbow, Starbuck, Gardner, and others. Hopewell Friends meeting in the New Garden area of Guilford County, North Carolina was established in 1793 and laid down in 1849. Hopewell Meeting was located in Guilford County about 4 miles from New Garden Meeting. The name, Hopewell, was selected by a committee of New Garden Monthly Meeting in 1793. A meeting for worship, called Lower Reedy

Fork, had been held for some time previous to this. The members of Hopewell Preparative Meeting automatically became members of Hopewell Friends Meeting. There is no complete list of the names of the members of the meeting. Kennett Friends meeting was under the care of Springfield Friends meeting in High Point, North Carolina. There is no information available regarding the date the meeting was established or the date it was laid down. The meeting may have been established in the late 1700s as it is mentioned as early as 1800 by Stephen Weeks in Southern Quakers and Slavery. Apparently, Kennett Friends was a small meeting. The property where Kennett Friends meeting was located still belongs to Springfield Friends meeting. Kennett Friends was located in southeast Guilford County. There are still a few of the old tombstone visible. Providence Friends meeting in High Point, North Carolina (not to be confused with Providence Friends meeting in Pleasant Garden, North Carolina) was apparently under the care of Deep River Friends Meeting. The meeting may have been located on or near the Providence Wesleyan Church on East Fairfield Road in High Point. Members of the meeting could only attend when the weather was warm as they had no shoes in order to

walk the mile or more in cold weather. Abbotts Creek Friends meeting in High Point, North Carolina was established probably in 1792 under the care of Springfield Friends meeting. There is no information regarding when Abbotts Creek Friends meeting was laid down or why it was laid down. Hickory Creek Friends meeting was established in 1950 and is the first meeting in recent times to be laid down. Hickory Creek Friends meeting was originally called Bundy’s Chapel. Unfortunately, Bundy’s Chapel/Hickory Creek lasted only four years and was laid down in 1954. At least one meeting managed to rise from the “dead!” Jamestown Friends meeting, located in the High Point City Lake Park, was actually a part of Deep River Friends meeting. The “old” Jamestown Friends meeting was used by Quakers living in and around Jamestown. At times, it was not possible to travel to Deep River Friends to attend meeting for worship or other activities, if this involved crossing the Deep River. If the weather was bad or the river was high, it was not possible to get to Deep River Friends meeting. In 1964, Jamestown Friends “rose from the dead” with the establishment of the current Jamestown Friends meeting. There is now a bridge on Penny Road that eliminated the problem of crossing the Deep River.

continued from front “The principal, Dr. Denise Richmond, told her to do some research and if Farlow found something she liked, she would look for a faculty advisor to help head the club.” Farlow discovered the Builders Club and Richmond emailed teachers asking for someone to work with it. “I had no idea (what was involved),” Galuski said. “But one afternoon, Mrs. Farlow, John Gibbs, a member of Gate City Kiwanis and I had a ‘meeting of the minds’ with Dr. Richmond and that is how it all began. “Mr. Gibbs was the guiding force, helping to navigate starting a new club. The three of us formed this spectacular club of kind and caring (young) leaders.” Through the years, JMS Builders Club members have been involved in a variety of service activities: helping with the Arc Challenge Baseball League, school beautification projects, assisting with numerous functions at Haynes-Inman Education Center, ringing the bell at Christmas for The Salvation Army, packing boxes for the Jamestown Presbyterian Church Food Pantry and more. To honor Galuski’s involvement, the other advisers got a banner that Magley hung at the school. “I was a little embarrassed,” Galuski said. “It is a very large banner.” At the picnic, the club continued their honor of Galuski by presenting her with an engraved plate, as well as a bouquet of flowers and beautifully decorated cake, both from Blossoms Florist and Bakery. “I was surprised by the love that was bestowed

Izabella just finished playing soccer for the Ragsdale women’s team. She was also elected to be vice president of the sophomore class for next year.” The Tessau brothers, Nathan and Nicholas, came, and helped set up the event. They are graduating and will attend UNC in the fall. Their younger brother, Noah, will be a junior at Ragsdale. “I am proud of all these kids,” Galuski said. “It touches my heart that they were able to attend this special night. I love seeing my Builders all grown up, hearing how they are doing and the impact I was able to have. As a teacher, you don’t always feel appreciated, so these students have often kept me going.”

Galuski saw two former Builders who could not attend the event at a local store. They shared their future plans to attend college, travel and continue to help others. “I got great joy in hearing about their accomplishments and where they are heading next,” Galuski said. “Doing Builders has always been about the service and the students for me, not money or recognition.” Galuski feels the biggest accomplishment of the club has been staying active for 12 years and building great student leaders in the community. “Kiwanis Club has been such an asset to these students and I can only hope that they continue to see the importance of service in their community and globally,” Galuski said. “But the club would not have been so successful without the help of all its

advisors. This is not a one man/one woman show.” Galuski named several people who were instrumental in the club including Farlow, the parent who suggested the club, Principal Richmond and Gibbs, who served as the Kiwanis advisor. Parents who served as advisors were Donna McLamb, Dee Jellicorse, Dianna Olmedo, Stacy Miller and Tonya Byrd. “For the past several years I have had the pleasure of working with teachers Linda Magley and Cecelia Evans,” Galuski said. “Melanie Potter, a 7th grade math teacher, will be working with them when I leave.” When Gibbs retired and moved to Virginia two years ago, Bill Cegles became the Kiwanis advisor. “I am so appreciative of all the adults who have had a hand at making Builders Club such an impactful group,” Galuski said.

“Julie will be hard to follow,” Magley noted. “Everything she does is with a great sense of responsibility and attention to detail. She has built up the club so much and touched the community deeply. She leaves a legacy at JMS that has expanded into high school and college. “The best word to describe her is profound. She has a heart for service.” Galuski advises students to become involved in the Builders Club. “Help your school and

community to be a better place. In turn, you will become a better you,” she said. “It is difficult for parents to add another activity to their own schedule, but one life lesson that can’t be overlooked is kindness to others. Too many people are self-focused. If we want to be proud of the world we live in, parents need to help guide their children to goodness. Builders Club is an excellent resource. The JMS club will welcome them with open arms.”

JMS Builders Club officers

At the Jamestown Builders Club end-of-the-year picnic, advisors recognized last year’s officers: MacKenzi Cabiness, president; Ciara Dawson, vice president; Leanne McGowan, secretary; and Sam Rindal, treasurer. Recently elected officers for the 2019-2020 school year include Ava Blum, president; Triniti Cabiness, vice president; MacKenzi Cabiness, secretary; and Morgan Isaacson, treasurer.

continued from front out helped by noting the number of each kind of teeth, shape and size of the skull and placement of the eyes. Skulls ranged in size from 3.5 cm in length to 29 cm. “Start by determining if it is a carnivore or herbivore,” Key said. “[Humans] technically have carnivore dentition (teeth) but we have canine incisors, molars and premolars. “First thing to check is the molars.” Key said that animals like deer, cows and goats have no front teeth so if you should stick your finger in their mouth, they can’t bite you. Participants also had the chance to guess which animal left which track, or footprint. These ranged from a large bear, to a small rabbit and a heron. The number of toes is a major clue, as are claws, size, webbing, whether the front feet are larger than the back and whether the print is one long solid print or if it has breaks in it. “Sometimes it comes down to common sense,” Key said. “If it’s a great blue heron track, you know it won’t look like a bear track. It’s based on where you’re finding it and other things.” Key used popular candy to demonstrate different types of animal scat and participants were given the opportunity to guess which animal left something behind. A handout showed a photograph of an actu-

al dropping for comparison. Raisinets mimic rabbit pellets while something like Twix bars could indicate a possum came through. A handout, or scat dichotomous key, made determination easier as a flow chart broke things down into mammal or other, shape, size and other characteristics. How one question is answered would lead the participant to the next question. The Piedmont Environmental Center, 1220 Penny Road, is located beside High Point City Lake and the Bicentennial Greenway. Over six miles of natural trails also traverse the center grounds, the shortest coming in at 2/10 mile and the longest at 1.8 miles. A map can be downloaded at https://www.highpointnc. gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/PiedmontEnvironmental-Center-18. The center offers programs year-round for children and adults – many free – including kayaking, wildflowers and walks. Her dog knows many words BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S corNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can dogs really understand what we’re saying? Well, my little rat terrier, “Adam,” understands many words, such as “hot” when he gets too close to my coffee. He backs away quickly. He also picks up many words from our conversations, such as “cook” or “hungry.” I always tell him a person’s name when they meet him for the first time. Once, the woman he met was named Laura, so that’s what I told him. He looked at her, then at me, then back to her. He knows that my daughter’s name is Laura, and this wasn’t “his” Laura! — Anita T., Chicopee, Massachusetts DEAR ANITA: You’ve got one smart dog there! Some dogs do seem to understand new words, names or associations faster or better than other dogs. And a research study published last year seems to back that up. An evaluation of 12 dogs of different breeds

found that they could tell the difference between words they had previously heard and words that they hadn’t. The words they “knew” were the ones used when training them to distinguish between two objects. What was interesting is that when the dogs heard unfamiliar words or even “gibberish,” their neural centers for auditory processing were more active than when they heard familiar words. This is the opposite of the way our auditory processing activates. The researchers said it’s likely because the dogs were trying hard to understand what their humans were saying to them. It’s really cool that Adam can associate a familiar person with her name, Laura, and it seems clear that he noticed a difference. Now, will he identify “new Laura” and “old Laura” in the future? That’s definitely something to watch for. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

no apology needed on crime bill BY RICH LOWRY Donald Trump and Bill de Blasio agree: Joe Biden should be ashamed of his support for the 1994 crime bill. The bipartisan legislation that was long a point of pride for Bill Clinton, who signed it into law, is now in such malodor that CNN the other day identified it in a chyron as the “infamous” crime bill. Trump says that African Americans won’t vote for someone who supported the crime bill, which he calls a “dark period in American History” that Biden should apologize for. De Blasio, the no-hope presidential candidate, agrees, deeming the crime bill “a painful era in our nation’s history.” Biden will have a lot of explaining to do about the bill, in the primaries and — now, it’s clear — even in a potential general election. The legislation was a mixed bag, representing the blunderbuss approach typical of sweeping bipartisan federal legislation. But the bill was, overall, a politically necessary response to a devastating decades-long crime wave. It is our good fortune to have forgotten the visceral fear and loathing engendered by the crime wave beginning in the 1960s. Violent crime increased 350% from 1960 to 1990. Criminologist Barry Latzer points out that from 1970 to 1995, almost 675,000 people were murdered in the United States, Civil War-level carnage. Charles Lane of The Washington Post notes that 49 percent of people in 1994 said crime was the top problem in the country. This wasn’t white voters alone. The crime bill had the support of nearly 60 percent of nonwhites. Thirty-nine black pastors

signed a letter supporting the legislation, and 10 black mayors urged the Congressional Black Caucus to back it, which most members did. The bill’s funding of more police officers probably helped, and the emphasis on greater incarceration certainly did as well. It’s not true, as de Blasio says, that the “crime bill was one of the foundations of mass incarceration.” Incarceration began to increase in the 1970s as the crime wave built, and the crime bill most directly affected the federal system, accounting for less than 10 percent of all prisoners. According to a study by the National Academy of Sciences, the drivers of mass incarceration were increases in prison commitments per arrest and in time served. Time served for murder went from five years in 1981 to 16.9 years in 2000, and for sexual assault from 3.4 years in 1981 to 6.6 years in 2009. It is true that the arrest rate for possession and use of drugs increased 162% from 1980 to 2006. We shouldn’t exaggerate, though. At their height in 1990, drug offenders were about 20% of state prisoners and are currently less than 15%. Overall, the U.S. incarceration rate is now at its lowest in 20 years. Almost any public policy has its tradeoffs, and in the fullness of time, with crime having fallen so dramatically, it is natural that the priorities — and overkill — of the 1990s will look different. But no one should apologize for having worked to get dangerous people off the streets at a time when they were causing untold grief and rending the civic fabric of America. Couch Theatre BY AMY ANDeRSON “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” (PG-13) — Tyler Perry is back in a swan song for Madea, this time in rural Georgia for a reunion centered around the anniversary of Vianne and Anthony. But the happy occasion is suddenly eclipsed by Anthony’s untimely and inelegant demise. Madea plans a true sendoff, while all around her, family intrigue and shocking secrets erupt. For a PG-13 movie, there sure are a lot of sex jokes; I’d put it more at a PG-16. Perry has said this will be his final Madea movie, dropping the drag in favor of some new projects. For that reason, I was hoping for something a bit more epic. But it wasn’t

Madea’s funeral, so maybe we’ll see her again. “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” (NR) — It took Terry Gilliam a couple of decades to get this epic adventure-comedy off the ground, but it finally makes its way to DVD. Toby (Adam Driver) is an ad-man working unsuccessfully on a commercial. He serendipitously ends up with a copy of his own student film, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” and travels to the nearby village where it was filmed. There he runs into his lead actor (Jonathan Price), who years later still believes that he truly is Quixote. The actor tags Toby as Sancho Panza, his squire, and the two go off on a

Got Milk?

BY ANGeLA SHeLF MeDeARIS KitcHeN diVa June is Dairy Month! Since 1939, the National Dairy Council has encouraged families to make milk their beverage of choice. Originally, it was a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer by grocer organizations. Dairy’s rich history continues with people, communities, companies from across the country observing Dairy Month in a variety of ways. In many areas, dairy farm families open their gates to visitors for tours, while local fairs and festivals offer taste testing and events featuring tasty dairy products. Dairy farming is a family tradition, one that has been a way of life for many generations. Ninety-eight percent of dairy farms are family owned and operated. These hardworking men and women provide Americans with fresh dairy products year-round. Whether it’s in coffee, cereal, smoothies or dairy-based dressings, adding one more serving of milk to your family’s day can help ensure they get the nutrients they need to build strong bones and teeth. Dairy provides three of the four nutrients that are typically lacking in American diets: calcium, potassium and vitamin D. Dairy’s unique combination of nutrients plays key roles in preventing heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis. Dairy also is important for building strong bones and teeth. Low-fat, fat-free milk or lactose-free dairy products are the best choice for the fat and calorie conscious, or those who are lactose intolerant. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 150 calories and 8 grams of fat (4.5 grams saturated fat). If you choose an 8-ounce glass of fat-free milk, you consume 85 calories and less than 1 gram of fat. This dairy-licious recipe for Tres Leches Cake is popular in Mexico and has been updated

with a few time-saving twists. It’s typically soaked with three kinds of milk — sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream. This recipe uses frosting as the third milk, in the form of whipped cream. It’s a delicious way to celebrate National Dairy Month.

TRES LECHES CAKE If you’re pressed for time, just use a good quality packaged butter cake mix and follow the directions for baking, soaking and frosting the cake below. 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup butter, softened 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk FROSTING 2 cups heavy whipping cream 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract MILK MIXTURE 1 cup half & half 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract BERRIES (OPTIONAL) 1 cup fresh raspberries or strawberries, leaves removed 1 cup fresh blueberries or blackberries 3/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut, toasted, optional 1. Heat oven to 325 F. Grease and flour 8-inch round cake pan; set aside. 2. Combine sugar, butter and vanilla in bowl; beat at medium speed until combined. Add eggs, one at a time, continue beating until fluffy. 3. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in bowl; mix well. Add flour mixture to butter mixture; beat at low speed until well-mixed. Add 1/2 cup milk; continue beating until well mixed. 4. Pour batter into prepared

pan. Bake 30 minutes and turn the cake halfway around. Continue to bake another 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. 5. Place cake in refrigerator to cool completely. The cake also can be made a day ahead, if desired. (A chilled or cold cake is much sturdier than a cake at room temperature, and easier to cut.) 6. Meanwhile, make the frosting by combining whipping cream, powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in bowl; beat at high speed until stiff peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to use. 7. To make the soaking liquid, combine half & half, sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in bowl; mix well. 8. To slice the cake in half horizontally, you’ll need a small paring knife and a large serrated or bread knife. 9. Use the paring knife to score the entire outside edge of the cake halfway up the side. Go slowly, get down at eye-level if necessary to keep it even, and don’t cut too deeply. Take the serrated knife and cut through the cake along

the indentation made with the paring knife. 10. Use the serrated knife to lift one layer of the cake, turn it over and place it, cut-side up, onto serving plate. Carefully pour half of milk mixture over top of the cake, a little at a time, allowing it to soak in before adding more. 11. Spread a 1/2-inch layer of frosting onto soaked cake. Top with second cake layer, placed on top, cut-side up. Pour remaining milk mixture over cake. Frost with remaining frosting. Refrigerate until serving time. Top with berries and/or coconut just before serving, if desired. Angela Shelf Medearis is an awardwinning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was diagnosed with a benign neoplasm of my cerebral meninges (meningioma). I am a healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman. I do not take any medications. The finding was incidental. I have no symptoms from the meningioma. I sometimes feel as if my mental capacity has declined somewhat (such as memory), but I attribute this to the normal aging process. I have been getting an MRI every year since the diagnosis. The last test showed that the tumor was 2.9 cm by 1.6 cm by 2.7 cm. The mass measured 2.3 cm by 1.3 cm by 2.1 cm when I had the first MRI in 2014. It seems to be slowly growing. What are your thoughts on this? Do you advise surgery at this time? — C.C.

DEAR C.C.: A meningioma is a type of brain tumor that arises from the meninges, the lining of the brain. Most of these are benign, although they do range from benign to cancerous. Even the cancerous tumors very rarely spread. The main problem with this type of tumor is that they grow, and there is not a lot of room inside the skull to spare. An enlarging tumor can compress the brain, and that can lead to symptoms. Depending on the exact location of the tumor, it can cause weakness, loss of vision or loss of hearing or smell. Another common symptom is a seizure. Changes in mental function are less common, but I am very cautious about ascribing symptoms to aging. Although the change in size seems small, the tumor has approximately doubled in size since 2014. That is a clear indication for treatment. It will likely keep growing and cause symptoms. Surgery is a treatment option, as is radiation, but only an expert can make the assessment of what is best in your situation. If the tumor is in a favorable location, most authorities would recommend surgical removal of the tumor. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
