More than a memory

Memorial scholarships aid JPC seniors It is natural when people pass away that their memories continue living in the hearts of their loved ones. The memory of Lane Pleasants, however, is much more far reaching. The daughter of Bill and Clarajo Pleasants, Lane lost her life in 1999 following a lung transplant in a courageous fight against cystic fibrosis. She was a lifelong resident of Jamestown and active member of the community and Jamestown Presbyterian Church. Following her death, the Pleasants family and Jamestown Presbyterian Church Session established a scholarship from memorial contributions. Since its beginning, 33 JPC graduat-

Lane Pleasants ing seniors have received college scholarships that not only honor Lane’s memory, but also help start the recipients on the path to their future career goals. “Our daughter’s scholarship has afforded the opportunity for Jamestown Presbyterian Church to recognize and financially assist some of the brightest and most gifted youth in our church and community,” Bill said. “It has been such a

joy to hear about their many outstanding accomplishments while in college and throughout their careers.” For more than two decades, scholarships have helped create employees for a variety of jobs, including a pediatric speech language pathologist, researcher for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in commercial gene therapy, Air Force pilot following graduation from Air Force Academy, epidemiologist with Center for Disease Control, accountant with consulting firm, Christian educator and independent living activities director, nurse, second generation owner/operator of a McDonalds, teacher, manager in strategy and planning group at Cisco, two Peace Corps volunteers, medical coordinator with Operation Smile, lawyer

serving as public defender, planner for out-of-state Regional Transportation District and contractor with a master’s in business working with a large company. Recipients of this year’s Lane Pleasants scholarships have already set their goals high. Leah Robinson plans to attend either James Madison University or the University of North Carolina Charlotte to pursuit a bachelor of arts in psychology and a minor in religious studies or pre-theology. She wants to continue her studies at a seminary to become an ordained pastor. Hayley Salthouse wants to attend either Wake Forest University or the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to obtain a degree in finance. Her career plans include working as a finan-

Leah is the daughter of Ben and Rebecca Robinson of Jamestown. A graduate of Ragsdale High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Service-Learning Club, Art Club and Tiger Guides. She earned the Service-Learning diploma, which requires 250+ hours of service. A competitive dancer for years, she also was involved in her school dance program.

Grave dowsing:

fact or fiction … or just fun? By CARoL BRooKS freeLAnce Writer cab1hp@gmail.com It sounds like someone is pulling your leg. “Straighten two wire coat hangers, bend one end to a right angle as a three-tofour-inch handle, walk over an area where you believe a body is buried, and you can not only find the body but you can determine gender and approximate age,” the prankster will say. But it really works and is a helpful tool for genealogists searching a known family cemetery. Dowsing for water or metal – and even bodies – has been practiced for thousands of years. Fans of old TV westerns may remember homesteaders using a forked stick to dowse, the point dipping down when over water. Dowsing is also called divining or witching. Witching for graves using witch hazel twigs dates back to 15th century Germany and many consider it satanic. These days, genealogists

Council to meet June 15 By CARoL BRooKS freeLAnce Writer cab1hp@gmail.com It’s that time of year again. The Jamestown Town Council will continue a public hearing from May to consider adoption of the 2021-22 annual budget at its June meeting. Additionally, the Council will consider approval or denial of a resolution adopting a Capital Improvement Program. A second public hearing is for a rezoning request for 6014 and 6016 West Gate City Boulevard from Civic (CIV) to Commercial (CZ-C). The two properties total approximately 3.35 acres. This was requested by GTCC for the mostly wooded property in front of the school’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) building. A third public hearing regards a request by GTCC to annex the properties at 6014 and 6016 West Gate City Boulevard. Under new business, there will be a discussion

about the Town’s recycling services led by Public Services Director Paul Blanchard. Additionally, the Council will consider approval of a Capital Project ordinance for Phase II of the Oakdale Road sidewalk project along with a budget amendment for the ordinance. The Council will also honor a retiring Planning Board member as well as appoint members to both the Parks & Recreation Committee and Planning Board. Following the regular meeting, the Council will go into Closed Session to discuss matters related to attorney/client privilege regarding Lori Herron (2216 Guilford College Road) vs the Town of Jamestown. The Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. June 15 in the Civic Center at Town Hall. Since Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, the meeting is open to the public. It will continue to be live-streamed at www.youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC.

everyone earns Gold By NoRMA B. DeNNIS freeLAnce Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com

It was a day Paulette Mitchell can look back on with fond memories. On May 29, her daughter Zoe received Girl Scout’s highest honor, the Gold Award. But there is much more to the story. She and Melissa Wolfe, co-leaders of Ambassador Troop #40836, had the privilege of seeing six girls – their entire troop – receive Gold awards. “These girls have known each other since kindergarten,” Mitchell said. “Our Photo by LilyGrace Wolfe families have been friends. continued from front where something is buried in the ground, the rods will cross. They will uncross as soon as you get away from the body. The rods will pick up something in the ground. It may be electrical wire, it may be a water line, septic tank, underground stream … or human graveyard. How does this work? Some scientists say the rods pick up a disturbance in the earth’s magnetic field. Others say they pick up gases from decaying bodies. However, hold the dowsing rods over the body of a living person lying on the floor and the rods will also work. Another popular theory is dubbed ideomotor action, basically meaning that if you expect to find a body or start paying close attention to your rods, you will unconsciously do something that will produce the result. You might lean forward, causing the rods to tilt downward and cross, even if there is no body. So, it is believed it is actually the dowser, not the tools, that makes the movements, even subconsciously. Perhaps like using a quija board. Other techniques There is a way to determine if it is a human body versus an animal. Humans are usually buried in a Christian manner with the head to

the west, feet to the east and on their back. They are usually two-to-three feet apart and laid out in an orderly manner. However, that rule is not followed 100 percent of the time. A municipal cemetery might not be laid out east to west. Some cemeteries contain areas where the earth has sunk into the ground but often have no marker. These might indicate a grave site. There are two techniques with the rods to determine the gender of a body. The first test often gives a false reading but is the most dramatic to watch. Standing over a grave, hold one of the rods loosely over your head, parallel to the ground. The rod will swing around and eventually point to the feet of a male or the head of a female. Dowsers often consider the second test foolproof. Balance the handle of one of the rods on your forefinger while standing over a grave. The rod will begin circling clockwise for a male and counterclockwise for a female. It is said this technique is 95 percent accurate on graves that were later exhumed. Approximate age is determined by walking the length of a grave. The rods will stay crossed while over the body, obviously longer for an adult than for a child. Allow one-

The rod will rotate clockwise for a male and counterclockwise for a female. two steps for an infant, twothree for a toddler, three-four for a child, six for an adult, and seven for a tall adult. Try these techniques on a living person lying on the floor. If the length of the body is really long, it is probably a horse. More than one person could be buried in the same grave as the rods might indicate. Sometimes a mother is buried holding a child. Coat hangers are not the only type of metal that dowsers can use – any type of metal will work. Most are about 3 feet long with a short handle on one end. Cut a drinking straw to about 4 inches and place the handle inside to allow for free motion. Experts in grave dowsing suggest testing the technique at a cemetery where there are marked graves before venturing out into the woods or fields. Telltale signs that graves are there are depres-

sions in the ground, or mounds, or even wild periwinkle growing over a grave. Although dowsing for graves is a controversial technique, it does appear to work in most cases. Unfortunately it is not able to produce the name of the person buried in the grave but a surname might be surmised if surrounding sites have grave markers. The technique works well in small, often neglected, family cemeteries. It is advisable to make a map of any unmarked graves you might find while dowsing, indicating male or female and whether it is a child or adult. But always get permission of landowners before starting your adventure. Not everyone will get the same results with grave dowsing so it is recommended you practice first on a marked grave, especially to determine gender and approximate age.

Grave dowsing works Staff members at the Jamestown News had to test the grave dowsing theory. Several years ago, skeptical reporters Carol Brooks and Norma Dennis first went to Deep River Friends Cemetery. They walked among the graves and the rods crossed over known burials. Brooks did not look at the grave markers so she would not be influenced as to the sex. Every reading was correct. The length of the body of a child’s grave also rang true. Part of this cemetery is known to have many unmarked graves, several of which were found during the test. Next, the pair went to the cemetery at the old Meeting House at the High Point City Lake Park. Most of the markers in the cemetery are gone, due to vandalism or age, so it was a good place to run the test. Although the entire graveyard was not checked, many graves were found, laid out in an orderly fashion west to east.

approve and facilitate the marriage or disclose her daughter’s condition and lose the opportunity for her happiness. In 1960, I read an early version of it in “The New Yorker” and was entranced by the story and the connection to North Carolina. Alas, the North Carolina connection was mythical. Spencer told me she was really thinking of Birmingham, where she had friends, but changed the city’s name to Winston-Salem so her friends in Birmingham would not try to see themselves in the story. The story became the basis for a popular film in 1962. It starred Olivia de Havilland, Yvette Mimieux and Rossano Brazzi. In 2005, a musical based on the story was staged in New York and broadcast on public television. Before moving to Chapel Hill, Spencer and her husband lived in Italy and Canada. Her roots, however, were in her birthplace, Carrollton, Miss., and her early work reflected the complicated racial caste systems of the South. The headliner of the new collection is “The Voice at the Back Door,” Spencer’s 1956 novel. Michael Gorra, the new volume’s editor, writes that it is “widely considered Spencer’s masterpiece.” Set in rural Mississippi in the early 1950s, complicated race relations and violence are at its center. Gorra writes that in 1886 there had been a massacre in Spencer’s hometown, where more than 20 Blacks had been shot at the local courthouse. “The bullet holes remained visible until the 1990s, and as a child she always wondered about them, puzzled that she couldn’t get the grown-ups to tell her what had happened.” Gorra continues, “The novel depicts the everyday racism of white society, ventriloquizing the spitting vehemence of her characters’ speech. And then Spencer does something more: she describes her own rising generation as one that in private might almost seem progressive, but that in public preached segregation. She names the conscious hypocrisy of the world to which she belonged, in which political expediency could excuse anything. Some white readers branded her a traitor, and her Vanderbilt teacher Donald Davidson, a Confederate apologist, refused ever to speak to her again.” The judges for the Pulitzer Prize unanimously recommended “The Voice at the Back Door” for the award in fiction. According to the new book’s jacket, the Pulitzer board, however, decided to make no award. and that decision has never been adequately explained. Perhaps, it “was for fear that Spencer’s racial subject matter was too incendiary for the national climate at the time.” Too late for the Pulitzer, but the new volume of Spencer’s work gives us another chance to rejoice in her courage and great stories. The program also airs on the North Carolina Channel Tuesday at 8:00 pm and other times.

Couch Theatre By AMy ANDeRSoN I’m a certified believer in movie soundtracks. Music can not only trigger a great movie memory, but from where I sit, it just makes sense to have a playlist curated by an expert. Maybe it’s my age — I’m firmly Gen X, and movie soundtracks are the precursors to today’s Spotify playlists. The Recording Industry Association of America ranks songs, albums, etc., and the top 20 list agrees: The majority of bestselling soundtracks are movies in the 1980s and ‘90s. Here are some gems from the top 20, by decade. John Travolta starts us out with the phenomenon that was 1977’s Saturday

Night Fever. Tony Manzano (Travolta) and friends live for the weekend disco, and the Bee Gees became the score of the late ‘70s with the title track, “More Than a Woman,” “Night Fever,” etc. Travolta follows it up alongside Olivia Newton-John with 1978’s Grease. The decade feel closes with Neil Diamond’s soundtrack to “The Jazz Singer,” where Diamond plays a young musician wresting himself from a traditional upbringing on a path to musical success. The 1980s feature some absolute iconic soundtracks that trigger instant recognition. Think about the biggies from this decade: Flashdance, Footloose, The Big Chill, Top Gun.

Warner Bros.

Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard But in the No. 3 spot of all time sits the soundtrack for “Purple Rain,” pitting The Kid (Prince, who performs with his band, The Revolution) in all his earnestness climbing the Minneapolis

While the 1990s gave us tracks like “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” in which Madonna sang her way to the No. 18 spot for the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical Evita, you have absolutely “nothing, nothing, NOTHING,” if you don’t have the soundtrack to The Bodyguard. This masterpiece by Whitney Houston — where she plays an incredibly popular and talented singer who brings on a gruff bodyguard (Kevin Costner) and falls in love — sits as the queen of soundtracks,

going platinum 18 times. Other jams from the 1990s: George Strait’s Pure Country soundtrack, as well as albums for The Lion King, Forrest Gump, Space Jam, City of Angels and Titanic (carried almost exclusively by Celine Dion’s ubiquitous “My Heart Will Go On”). Rounding out the decade is 1995’s Waiting to Exhale, also populated by Whitney Houston songs. Gold Award recipients

continued from front All of the girls are graduating seniors. Mitchell and Wolfe had hoped they could finish their Gold projects by the end of their junior years, but the pandemic added a whole layer of difficulty to the task. Some had to complete their projects as seniors, but all persevered to reach their goal. “Each of these young ladies met the important prerequisites through organizing and implementing a Take Action project during their Cadette years, which earned them the Silver Award,” Mitchell explained. “They also had to complete a Leadership Journey, which then opened the window to begin the Gold Award process.” The Girl Scout Gold Award is equivalent to

the Eagle Award for Boy Scouts. Girls work individually to design and execute a project that solves a specific community need. They must devote a minimum of 80 hours to their projects, usually over a period of one to two years. They connect with experts, community members and other Girl Scouts to bring their projects to fruition. A special ceremony was held at Jamestown Presbyterian Church to honor the Scouts for their accomplishments. Each Scout was allowed to have seven guests and a photo booth was set up to record the occasion for the families. Although other endof-year celebrations had been causal affairs, the leaders wanted this year

to be something special. After all, it is not often that an entire troop completes the requirements for Gold. Annually, fewer than 6 percent who begin the journey successfully complete it. Mitchell has participated in her daughter’s Scout troop since she was a Brownie Scout. She started as troop photographer, but in 2015 when the troop lost its original leaders, she and Wolfe agreed to take over the responsibility. What started as a troop of 12, however, had decreased to six by the time they reached Cadettes. “I promised the girls if they would stick with it, I would make sure they would make it to the Gold,” Mitchell said. Mitchell understands

the importance of family support for girls reaching for the Gold. During the formal presentation of the awards, she had each mother pin their Scout. “Each of the mothers had joined Scouts as an adult member of the troop,” Mitchell said. “They provided such a large support system.” Mitchell used photos she had taken through the years to provide a history of the girls’ Scouting careers. “It was neat to see all those memories,” she said. “There was hardly a dry eye among the crowd.” To celebrate the girls’ high school graduation, as well as recognition for earning the Gold, each girl received a photo album depicting their Scouting career and an exploding picture box. “It was emotional when they opened the gifts,” Mitchell said. The troop recognized one grandmother who had provided exceptional support with an honorary membership. It also presented Jamestown Presbyterian Church with money to purchase two large engraved pavers that will join others near the main entrance to the church. A time capsule including letters the girls wrote to themselves in 2020 will be buried under them. It will be opened in 2045. Angela Ferreira, a representative of Service Unit 151 – Southwestern Guilford County, attended the event and announced that Troop #40836 would be officially retired. No other troop will have that number. “There were lots of good feelings behind the entire evening,” Mitchell said.

ANANYA RAMESH Ananya’s desire to focus on the elderly population and their need for spirit-lifting activity and interaction led her to design and coordinate a continuous partnership between the Camden Health and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro and the youth program of a local church. With the help of her team, she organized game days, movie nights, and special holiday events and celebrations so the residents would have events to look forward to, as well as know they would have regular visitors coming to see them. JADE MARTIN Jade researched the beneficial impact of bats on the environment. She developed a presentation to educate others on the importance of bats and their habitats. She partnered with several local farms and families wanting bat houses. With the help of her team, she learned to build the houses and completed seven, which she delivered to the families. Details of the building and updates on the successful homing of bats in and around the community are included on her sustainable Facebook page. The bat house recipients agreed to update posts on the success of the project as time progresses. KATIE WHITTINGTON Katie spent numerous hours interviewing local experts in the field of science, gathering research and information to write an informative book designed to educate children on the importance of careers in the science field. She had her book published and delivered it to several local elementary schools and after-school programs, where she also conducted presentations to engage children in the joys of science. LEAH ROBINSON Leah worked with a local woodcrafter and Jamestown Presbyterian Church to build a life-sized 11-figure Nativity scene, which would be displayed on the front lawn of the church during the Christmas holiday season. As part of her project, she created an interactive Christmas coloring and activity booklet for kids that included an audiobook version. Leading up to the commencement of her project, she worked with a local artist to organize an assisted paint night at the church to help fund her project needs. NATALIE HAAS Natalie developed a Vacation Bible School program for Lutheran Church of Our Father in Greensboro. She met with staff and youth directors for the church and discerned a need for a summer youth program to be put into place at the church. With the assistance of her team of church members, staff, and youth volunteers, Natalie planned and implemented a weeklong program for the youth of the church community. Her project helped lay the foundation for more post-Covid summer programs to continue. ZOE MITCHELL Zoe planned, marketed and taught a free, introductory weekly class of ballet for after-school aged children through the local YMCA. She led a team of interested parents to advance the existing dance program within her high school by starting a Dance Booster group to support the dance teacher and students in that program. Zoe outlined her experience with instructions on how to recreate her project in a manual at the high school so students interested in volunteering in the same capacity would have lesson plans and access to tutorials she videotaped and uploaded to a YouTube channel. FIVE EARN THREE Five of the six Scouts received Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont Trifecta award pins as well. They have earned all three of the highest awards available in Girl Scouting – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
