Organ donation seals friendship What would you do to save the life of a family member, a friend, an acquaintance? For Ellen Druebbisch the answer was, “give him one of my kidneys.” on May 19, that is just what she did. the 22-year-old donated a kidney to 19-year-old Brenden Harrison. it was not a decision she took lightly. She sought council from her parents and others, and in the end felt it was something she should do. “once i found out i was a match, it was hard to say no knowing i could help someone,” Druebbisch said. Harrison and Druebbisch were on the Cedarwood Swim team together. She later became a swim coach and lifeguard, but the two

continued to hang out in the same crowd. “When i saw a Facebook post from Brenden’s mother, asking if anyone was willing to donate a kidney to her son, i felt bad, but did not think there was much i could do,” Druebbisch said. “When i went back to the post and saw we had the same blood type i decided to be tested.” Druebbisch contacted the organ donor center at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, but did not tell Harrison what she was doing. She did not want to get his hopes up in case she was not a good match. “Knowing Brenden made the idea of an organ donation more compelling,” Druebbisch said. “When i found out i was a match, i wrote him a letter and put it, along with a can of kidney beans, in his mailbox and told him to

call me. i explained the transplant team at Wake Forest Baptist was already setting up a date for surgery.” Druebbisch, a rising senior at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia, and Harrison, a rising sophomore at the University of north Carolina greensboro, completed their spring semesters in school, then followed quarantine measures to insure they did not contract an illness before the surgery. For Harrison, the son of Cindy and Larry Harrison, it was the wait of a lifetime. He had been born with the inability to make platelets, which resulted in his kidney deficiency. Many people were not aware of his physical Photo submitted problems since he had always Brenden Harrison, left, and Ellen druebbisch celebrate a sucbeen very active – playing foot- cessful kidney transplant and donation. The small print on Harrison’s shirt reads, “I run on spare parts,” and druebbisch’s SEE dONATION, PAGe 4 shirt reads, “Because who wouldn’t want a piece of this?”

Enjoying the ride of a lifetime By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Raeford Macon believed a person only needed one bicycle in a lifetime. His philosophy was to buy a big one for a child and let her grow into it so it would last a while. Macon’s daughter, Clarajo Pleasants, might be proving his point. Sixty-eight years after receiving a shiny blue bike for her 7th birthday, Pleasants is still tooling about her Jamestown community on that same bicycle. “it was too big when i got it and was hard to ride,” Pleasants admitted. “i grew up in Asheboro and could only ride on the sidewalk. it was a big deal when i was 9 or 10 and was able to ride it a short distance to a mom-and-pop store for my mother.” When Pleasants married her husband Bill in 1966, her parents, which included her mother Virginia, insisted she take the bicycle with Photos submitted her. Although not used, the Clarajo Macon proudly shows off the new bicycle she received for her 7th bike followed the couple birthday. Now as Clarajo Pleasants, she still enjoys riding the bicycle she with each move they made. received as a gift when she was a girl. For her 60th birthday, Bill surprised his wife by restoring the bicycle to riding condition. new tires and a slight “tune-up” were all that was needed. in fact, he was advised not to replace anything else to maintain the bike’s value and it still has the original paint, seat, handlebars and rims. “the family all went to the front porch and our oldest granddaughter, Ashton, who was 11 at the time, came riding down the street on the bike to present the surprise,” Pleasants said. Since CoViD-19 has limited activities for everyone, the Pleasants find themselves walking more. Clarajo has used the opportunity to ride her bicycle – which now is the perfect size – just a bit more also. “i ride the bike almost every day as Bill walks, circling back to where he is,” Pleasants said. Although she enjoys riding her childhood birthday bicycle and savors the memories it invokes, she does not embrace her dad’s idea of the best way to purchase one for a child. “When we brought bikes for our kids, we brought the appropriate size,” she said with a smile.

Council approves revised budget for 2020-2021 By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com the proposed budget for fiscal year 2020-2021, which the Jamestown town Council received in their packet for the June 16 meeting, changed somewhat by the time the Council held a special meeting on June 23 for approval. nevertheless, the Council unanimously approved the budget. “We had to change the tax rate, as guilford County only approved 1.7-cent increase to the PinecroftSedgefield [Fire Department] tax rate,” said Finance Director Judy gallman. “thus, i had to reduce the town tax rate also, as well as the contract amount we pay to PSFD.” PSFD, which has a station on guilford Road behind town Hall and contracts with the town for services, had requested a 2.5-cent property tax increase for its

pass-thus grant but county commissioners reduced that to the 1.72-cent figure on June 18. gallman said the town would absorb the .02cent difference. the tax rate for Jamestown will increase to $0.485 per $100 valuation. Last year’s figure was $0.468. the town did not proposed a tax increase for services provided by the town other than the fire department. the water rate remains unchanged and the sewer rate will decrease by 14 percent from the previous year. this is due to completion of the City of High Point’s Eastside treatment Plant sewer project. Jamestown is a partner in the treatment plant and was required to pay a share of the project. the budget, which goes into effect July 1, is for $15,654,235, or nearly $40,000 less than the June SEE COUNCIL, PAGe 4

Virus takes toll on golf course numbers By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

golfers may have been a little reluctant to return to play when Jamestown Park golf Course re-opened May 8 following a closure of six weeks due CoViD-19. Rounds played, not including complimentary play, were down nearly 2,000 – from the 3,523 rounds played in May 2019 to only 1,625 this year. this accounted for a reduction in revenue of approximately 51 percent less than 2019 and included four bad-weather days this year compared to five last year. Rounds played year-to-date figures are less than 4,000 behind 2019 – 18,792 this year compared to 22,368 in 2019. Year-to-date revenue for fiscal year 2019-2020 was down 16.7 percent over fiscal year 2018-19. Expenditures, however, were down in May 2020 by approximately 25 percent.

By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun Is there soon to be a new baby in the house? As the new member joins the family, the household may feel as if it’s been turned upside down. But if you keep older children involved, they’ll be part of the transition right along with you. Here’s an activity for including older siblings in welcoming that newborn. Just sit down together and decorate baby’s first one-piece cotton outfits. You’ll be dressing the baby with creative pizzazz, and the siblings will be proud of being part of it all. Here’s the basic inexpensive stuff you’ll need for one outfit: — Prewashed, solid-color or white 100% cotton baby one-piece style outfit with snaps, or you may use a newborn-size cotton T-shirt — Wax paper or cardboard — Cookie cutters — Fabric paints in squeeze bottles — Paper plate — Small foam paintbrushes or sponges clipped to clothespins — Pencil with eraser Here’s the fun: 1. Lay the one-piece outfit or T-shirt on a work surface. Place a piece of cardboard or wax paper between the two layers of fabric to protect the reverse side from any paint that may soak through. Choose a cookie cutter for a stencil. A star, moon, heart,

duckling! Anything goes. Place it anywhere on the fabric. 2. Pour a little permanent fabric paint onto a paper plate. Dip in the small foam paintbrush. Holding the cookie cutter firmly, start dab, dabdabbing inside it, making sure to reach all the edges. You don’t have to put equal density of paint all over the shape. A little variation actually adds interest. When you’re through, lift the cookie cutter up to see the beautiful design. Now it’s time for a few details. 3. Dunk the eraser end of the pencil in a little paint. It can be the same color you used for the cookie-cutter shape or a completely different one. Then stamp it along the neck or sleeves for a fun, whimsical border. 4. Add a few final details with the fabric squeeze bottles. You might want to write “Wee One” on the

heart. Or, write the baby’s name and date of birth. When baby wears it, take a photo to use for clever birth announcements. 5. Once the paint is dry, remove the cardboard or wax paper, and if the paint bottles say to do so, now is the time to iron on the reverse side to set the color. You’re done! Dress the baby in the wearable art, and notice the joy of an older sibling who is feeling just grand.

Gallman said this includes all Town operations, capital improvements and debt service. “A more accurate representation, however, is the total budget excluding interfund transfers, as these are amounts that only get transferred between funds of the Town. “The total, which excludes transfers – $13,120,035 – represents a 31 percent increase from the current amended 2019-20 budget.” Gallman said most of the increase comes from $275,000 for street resurfacing planned for 2020-2021 and nearly $4 million in water and sewer improvements.

On the personnel side, 20.2 percent of the total budget goes to salaries, FICA, retirement, group insurance 401(k) and other miscellaneous benefits for the 28 full-time employees. Part-time employees only receive FICA. The budget includes a 2.3 percent cost of living increase and a 0-2.7 percent merit increase. The Council also unanimously approved the Capital Improvement Program for fiscal years 2020/20212024/2025. But by November of 2019 his kidney function had dropped to only 20 percent and he was placed on a transplant list. When he received the letter from Druebbisch explaining she planned to give him a kidney, his feelings ran the gamut from surprise to relief to thankfulness. “I was so glad I got a match and did not have to wait any longer,” he said. “It also meant I would not have to go on dialysis, which is hard on your body.” Both Harrison and Druebbisch are home now continuing to recuperate from their surgeries. Friends before, the two feel they have more of a connection now. Druebbisch is looking forward to returning to college and finishing her degree in biomedical science. She also will continue competing on the school’s tennis team. “I think organ donation is great,” she said. “It puts your life on hold for a little while, but the risk of surgery is worth it to help someone.” In the fall, Harrison plans to resume his studies toward a degree in psychology, which he hopes to use as a marriage counselor. “I have received an extension of life,” he said. “I want to just continue being me.” To learn more about being an organ donor, contact the Living Donor Coordination Center at Wake Forest Medical Center at 336-713-5686 or email livingdonation@wakehealth.edu.

The Town Council first received a preliminary budget for fiscal year 2020-2021 on May 27 but felt several items should be reduced or removed due to the current state of the pandemic. Normally, the Council meets in March or April to see a preliminary budget for discussion but the March meeting was canceled due to the coronavirus. However, Town Manager Kenny Cole and Finance Director Judy Gallman met with councilmembers in groups of two or by telephone in recent weeks to review the budget. Since the proposed budget was the only thing on the agenda, no other business was conducted and the meeting lasted only 5 ½ minutes.
