Principal at Union Hill Elementary follows parents’ footsteps BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Adults often influence the direction a child takes in life. That was certainly the case for Therman Flowers, the new principal at Union Hill Elementary School. His dad was a teacher at his local high school and his mother was an elementary school teacher. An uncle was also a school principal. “They were my role models,” Flowers said. “From the time I was in the 9th grade and a member of the Future Teachers of America Club, I knew a career in education was what I wanted.” Flowers majored in early childhood education at North Carolina A&T University and did his student teaching at Guilford Middle School. His first position was as a 4th grade teacher in the Wake County School System “I received a N.C. Principal Fellowship scholarship for grad school, which enabled me to attend A&T full time,” Flowers said. “While completing my studies, I held prin-

cipal internships at all levels of schools in Guilford County. My first job was as assistant principal at Guilford Primary, then I was transferred to Fairview Elementary as its assistant principal.” He later served as principal at a magnet school and at several elementary schools in Durham and Wake counties. He worked in the Central office of NashRocky Mount. Public Schools as executive director of secondary schools. A federal grant allowed him to work fulltime as a transformation coach at C.C. Spaulding Elementary School in Durham, assisting the principal and staff to raise achievement scores. But the decision to come back to Guilford County to work was not difficult for him to make. “I have family in the area and wanted to be closer to them,” Flowers said. “I also knew the quality of the professionals I would be working with and wanted to be part of a great leadership team. “I want to ensure that students’ achievement at Union Hill continues upward in a positive way.”

Already working toward that goal, Flowers has been meeting with individual teachers and plans a drive-by meet-andgreet with parents where he will share his vision for the school with them. He is also working with a leadership team to make sure the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year goes smoothly, whichever way the school opens. Flowers enjoys spending time with family, which includes his two children. He also puts emphasis on his own mental, physical and spiritual life. He enjoys reading poetry that tells stories and views the book Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss as valuable for both children and adults. “There is a lot of optimism in that book,” he said. “Children have so many possibilities and the book helps them to hope for and achieve a better life. “I enjoy public speaking,” he added. “That got me out of my shyness growing up. “I’m looking forward to this school year. I think it will be amazing. I am excited to be at Union Hill and know it will be a great journey.”

Pilot Life tract sold BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Another piece of the former Pilot Life Insurance campus has been sold. Resort Lifestyle Communities plans a senior living community on what is known as Tract 4 at the corner of High Point and Alamance roads, across from Sedgefield. The Triad Business Journal reported last week that the Lincoln, Neb., company paid $2.4 million for the 11.8-acre site. Plans call for approximately 130 units of 55+ active adult apartments. All Resort Lifestyle Communities properties have many amenities, including paid utilities, cable TV and wi-fi, ceiling fans, live-in managers, a 24/7 medical alert system and concierge service, gourmet chefs, 24-hour Chef’s Pantry, housekeepers, daily activities, free scheduled transportation, on-site pharmacy and salon/barber shop, 150-seat theatre, banking services and more. The apartments are offered in a range of sizes and shapes. Pets are welcome. No specific plans were available at press time nor information about when construction would begin. Resort Lifestyle Communities manages Carolina Pines Retirement Community LLC. The purchase by RLC was on behalf of Carolina Pines and Jimmy Spahr, both of Nebraska. RLC is part of Cameron General Contractors and has over 50 “resort-style” senior living communities in the United States, including Capital Oaks in Raleigh. Attempts to contact RLC were unsuccessful. Berkley Hall, of Greensboro, is currently constructing the 248-apartment Retreat at Sedgefield

on 16.8 acres of the campus on Tract 2. The site is on the backside of the property and can be seen from West Gate City Boulevard. It is also at the dead end of Alamance Road, off High Point Road. The plans call for a 248-unit two-story retirement apartment complex. The tract containing the Pilot Life headquarters building, Tract 3-A, is also under contract but Kisco Senior Living representatives have not announced who is interested. It is believed that the building will be saved using historic tax credits. It is not known to what purpose the building will be used. Kisco’s plan from the beginning had been to preserve the historic buildings that were the home of Pilot Life Insurance, begun in 1924 by Alexander W. McAlister, a principal in the original Sedgefield Country Club development. The main building’s cornerstone bears the date of 1927. Pilot Life merged with Jefferson Standard Life Insurance in 1987 to become Jefferson-Pilot Life and moved to downtown Greensboro in 1990. Jefferson-Pilot became Lincoln Financial Group after a merger in 2006. Kisco started the process in 2008 of placing the buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. It was put on a study list at the time, but a recent search did not indicate the buildings had made the list. BACKGROUND Kisco Senior Living of Carlsbad, Cal., purchased the Pilot Life Insurance property in 2008 with the plan to construct a senior living facility. Plans changed after the recession, however, and the company decided to subdivide the land and sell tracts to other interested parties. SEE TRACT, PAGE 2

Board of Adjustment to hear variance request BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Board of Adjustment will hold a called meeting July 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The virtual meeting can be viewed on the Town’s YouTube page at https://www.youtube. com/channel/UCmi_MH3cM_ DfOvhsLO9ZC6w, and also will be available after the meeting. On the agenda is a consideration of a variance for setback relief along the rear setback at 213 Knollwood Dr. The applicant, Matt Lothakoun, is requesting a reduction of the setback from 25 ft. to 10 ft. to add an 8 ft. deep deck spanning the back of his house. The town’s Land Development ordinance requires a minimum rear setback of 25 ft. According to the plot plan, the existing house already encroaches into the required setback. However, the house was built around

1955, nine years before the earliest zoning ordinances for the Town. According to Planning Director Matthew Johnson, a variance remedy exists to permit owners the right to vary from the strict application of the ordinance when it is believed that health, safety and welfare would not be adversely affected. He does not believe that health, safety and welfare would be adversely affected and that this variance would be consistent with the spirit, purpose and intent of the ordinance. The property abuts Arnold Koonce City Lake. Due to COVID 19 and socialdistancing requirements, the number of persons able to attend the meeting in person is limited. Anyone believing they may have legal standing and wish to testify should contact the Town Clerk at 336-454-1138 no later than 12 p.m. July 20, 2020, and she will obtain your information. Testimony via video conference is acceptable.

The Jamestown Town Council’s July 21 meeting will again be held virtually at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. New business on the agenda includes the presentation by Judy Gallman, finance director, of Town funding to library, recreation and cultural/historical services. This part of the budget used to be called grant funding but due to changes in state laws, the Town now contacts groups it wishes to fund, rather than the groups themselves submitting grant proposals. The Council will hear a resolution honoring Art Wise for his service on the Planning Board and will consider appointing a new member and alternate member of the Planning Board. Ross Sanderlin, golf and recreation director, will present the

Jamestown Park and Golf Course quarterly report. After having a month to review the proposed Parks and Master Plan, the Council will vote to approve it. Under old business, the Council will consider an amendment to the lease agreement with the Jamestown Public Library. The Jamestown Town Council’s July 21 meeting will be available to view live at https://www. youtube.com/channel/UCmi_ MH3cM_DfOvhsLO9ZC6w and it will be available after the meeting at the same site. Anyone wishing to speak during public comment periods must call 336-454-1138 prior to the meeting to sign up. There will also be a sign up sheet outside the meeting on July 21. Those people will be allowed to enter the meeting one at a time in order to address the Council. All public comments must be made in person.

GCSO asking public for help identifying woman fatally hit by train The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the community’s help in identifying a woman who died Saturday after being hit by a train. Officials said the incident happened at 3:44 a.m. near Bonner Road and Main Street in Jamestown. The sheriff’s office described the victim as a Black female and said she is believed to be between 20 and 40 years old. She

is about 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds, with “pierced ears but no tattoos,” a spokesperson for the department said. Officials said the person died at the scene. Foul play is not suspected. Anyone with information about the victim is asked to contact the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office at 336-641-3355. (Info from WXII.)

CONTINUED FROM FRONT The company received city zoning for a Planned Unit Development, mixeduse category that sets conditions such as limits on building heights that will ensure future development complements the Sedgefield area’s attractive design. A Planned Unit Development, or PUD, was recently added to the Jamestown Land Development Ordinances. Many residents of Sedgefield were not happy when they learned of the plans in 2018 for development and attended the Oct. 12

Greensboro Zoning Commission meeting that year to voice their disapproval. However, the Zoning Commission granted Kisco and Cameron General Contractor’s request to rezone Tract 4 at the corner of High Point and Alamance roads, but added several conditions requested by the Sedgefield group, namely that a seniorliving community for people 55 and older be constructed on the site, along with some architectural conditions. While the Sedgefield residents could live with that verdict, they were not happy with the height of the buildings on the site and were still concerned about the overall planned development for the Pilot Life property. The residents were concerned the development would impact the environment, traffic and schools, which are already at- or over-capacity.

Strawberries are the perfect fruit BY ANGELA SHELF MEDEARIS THE KITCHEN DIVA Strawberries have been considered a tasty and nutritious treat for hundreds of years. Nutritional experts believe that strawberries are as close as you can get to a perfect fruit. They’re low in calories (just 27 per 100 grams) and fat-free, but packed with nutrients, including vitamins and antioxidants that bring numerous health benefits. Eating just five strawberries gives you more vitamin C than an orange. The vitamin content in strawberries drops quickly, so you need to eat them as soon as you can after they’ve been picked. The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberry sometimes gives off a rose-like aroma. Many speculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans, and perhaps even the Greeks. The strawberry plant was originally grown in Northern Europe, but wild species also are found in Russia, Chile and North America. At one time, wild strawberries grew everywhere from Canada to the Carolinas and westward beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Before modern refrigeration, a day of “strawberring” meant a long day of picking, followed by gorging on delicious strawberry treats — pies, tarts, shortcake and all the ripe strawberries the family could consume. Berries that were not eaten were preserved as jam, jelly, sauce, strawberry vinegar and strawberry tonic, a medicinal drink. The remaining berries were dried on flat rocks for several days. These dried berries would be used throughout the fall and winter in breads, cakes, puddings and porridge.

The first American species of strawberry was cultivated in about 1835. Today, the strawberry is the leading small fruit crop in the U.S. It is farmed from Florida to Alaska, with the largest strawberry growing centers located in California and Florida. When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without any soft or brown patches. Never buy strawberries that are green or hard, or that look dry, dull or wrinkled. When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed. Always dispose of any berries that have signs of mildew or are rotten, as they’ll contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the refrigerator. Store the berries in a cool place. Strawberries should be lightly rinsed, not washed, before serving, and eaten as soon as possible. This recipe for Strawberry Flower Cups is an easy way to serve fresh berries as a dessert or to use as a beautiful decoration. The strawberries are cut to resemble flower petals then stuffed with sweetened cream cheese. It’s a cool, delicious way to showcase these beautiful berries! How about a quick word game with your kids? Start with “corn.” There’s corn on the cob, corn mazes, cornflakes, corndogs, corny jokes. Keep going. You might even hear someone exclaim, “can of corn!” referring to an easy catch at the baseball field. This summer, I’ve been thinking “Mexican street corn” (elotes), a lightly grilled and slightly charred corn on the cob typically slathered with mayo, rolled in crumbles of tasty cotija (pronounced ko-TEE-hah) cheese and chopped cilantro, then drizzled with fresh lime juice. A dusting of chili powder raises the heat, if you dare. The mix of flavors is dynamic and will be memorable at your next barbecue. Many street corn recipes call for mixing the add-ons before spreading onto the corn, but I prefer a buffetstyle toppings bar to let each guest customize with his or her favorite textures and flavors. Rather than cooking the husked corn on the outdoor grill, which takes time, skill and space, I opt for boiling it in a big pot on my stove while the main course cooks on the grill. Just before we eat, I set the boiled corn on the empty hot grill until lightly charred on all sides. MEXICAN CORN FAMILY-STYLE 1/4 cup mayonnaise 3/4 cup cotija cheese, crumbled (substitute with crumbled feta or Parmesan) 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped 1 jalapeno chili, seeded and finely chopped (optional)

Chili powder (optional) 2 limes, cut in wedges 6 ears of fresh sweet corn, shucked 1. Set up the toppings bar next to a stack of dinner plates. Place mayonnaise, cheese, cilantro and chopped chili in bowls. Arrange in a row on a serving table with a shaker of chili powder and plate of cut limes at the end. Set a brush by the mayo. 2. Boil or steam corn until tender. 3. Remove corn from cooking pot, pat dry and set on hot grill. Rotate with tongs for a few minutes. 4. Arrange on a large platter and set by toppings. Invite family and guests to take a dinner plate and begin by brushing the corn with mayonnaise. Press cheese and cilantro into

the mayo. Add chilies or sprinkle with chili powder if desired, then drizzle all over with squeezed lime juice. Serve hot. Serves 6

TIP: For those who prefer eating corn removed from the cob: Secure the end of an ear of corn in the hole of an angel food cake pan. Slice down with a sharp knife to remove the kernels — they will fall directly in the pan.
