Board denies text amendment but pig issue is not dead In anticipation of a large turnout at the July 9 Planning Board meeting, the meeting was moved to the Civic Center, where most of the seats were filled. The audience had come to hear discussion about a proposed text amendment to the Land Development Ordinance regarding the keeping of pigs within town limits. Lori Herron, of 2216 Guilford College Road, has requested the Town create a text amendment to Article

3, Definitions, of the LDO. The article currently defines “limited agriculture” as “the keeping of gardens and animals for non-commercial domestic use. Such agriculture generally refers to, but is not limited to, domestic fowl such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, bees, and other small animals (ex: rabbits). Limited agriculture does not permit livestock such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine or the like.” Herron claims her potbelly pigs are pets and therapy animals, not livestock. She wants to amend the text to read, “Limited agriculture

does not permit livestock, animals used for food or fiber, such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine over 300 pounds, or the like, not to include miniature or potbellied pigs that are kept as and considered to be pets.” “We’re seeking to clarify that pigs of a certain size, specifically miniature pigs, are not livestock,” Herron said. She added that the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not consider them to be livestock. Nor does her veterinarian. According to the Internet, pot-belly pigs can weigh SEE PIg, PAGe 3

Joy for the past, anticipation for the future By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrITer ndworddesign@gmail.com If there were themes to each Jamestown Rotary Club meeting, the one for July 9 might have been “Anticipation.” Following supper, members and guests waited to see the reaction of Lisa Hawley during a presentation of a check to support her non-profit Feeding Lisa’s Kids. Hawley, owner of the Southern Roots Restaurant in Jamestown, began the nonprofit several years ago and it has continued to grow. Club members were not disappointed at Hawley’s expression of extreme gratitude. “Thank you so much. You don’t know what this means,” Hawley said repeatedly through tears of joy after receiving a

check for $4,800. “We are currently providing food for 155 families each month and this will help so much.” The donation was made possible through the club’s second annual golf tournament, which was held June 14 at Jamestown Park. The tournament included four-person teams in a Captain’s Choice format. Local businesses and individuals also sponsored holes as a donation to the Rotary Club’s fundraising efforts. Winners of the tournament were: The 1st place prize of $400 went to the team of Chip Burch, Chuck Burch, Robert Bunch and Donny Williams. Winning 2nd place and $300 was the team of Travis Brooks, Neilson Murray, Daniel Southerd and Clint Walker. The 3rd place team of Dickie Bower, SEE FUTURE, PAGe 3

By LINdA WILLARd JAMeSTOWN FrIeNDS MeeTING Marcus Mote, the son of strict Quaker parents, David Mote, Jr. and Miriam Mendenhall Mote, was born June 9, 1817 in West Milton, Ohio. Mote’s mother Miriam Mendenhall Mote was born in the Deep River community of North Carolina. Miriam had been a member of Deep River Friends Meeting. His father, David Mote, Jr. was born in Columbia County, Georgia. In the Mote household, art was not encouraged as it was frowned on by strict Quakers who viewed it as frivolous. Despite the lack of encouragement. Mote chose art as his career. After completing his local basic education, Mote taught school in Turtle Creek, Ohio. While teaching school in Turtle Creek, Mote fell in love with Rhoda Steddom, one of his students. Mote

Marcus Mote and Steddom eloped and settled in Lebanon, Ohio. The couple was married in the Orthodox Friends Meeting House in Waynesville, Ohio. Mote and his wife became the parents of 4 sons and 1 daughter. Mote began his career in art as an itinerant limner. His most famous work was a life sketch of John Quincy Adams. Adams was on his way to Cincinnati to dedicate the Mount Adams Observatory. Adams made a stop at the Williamson Hotel, the present-day Golden Lamb Inn. In 1850, Mote and his partner, Peter Deardorff set

Marcus Mote June 19, 1817 — February 26, 1898 up a portrait gallery in Lebanon. The business partners advertised daguerreotypes, painted portraits and miniatures, and taught art classes. After about two years, Deardorff left the partnership and moved to Detroit. Mote continued to paint and expanded his work to include large panorama scenes. He also concentrated on engraving. In 1854, Mote moved his family to Richmond, Indiana where he opened a

School of Design. According to Mote, over the years, he attracted more than 500 students. Mote remained in Richmond, Indiana for the remainder of his life. Mote advocated for art as a part of the school curriculum. He managed to convince the Richmond School system to include drawing in the public schools eight years before the State of Indiana mandated drawing as a part of the school curriculum. On August 20,1897, The Richmond Item newspaper reported that Mote, who was now 80 years old was violently insane and a danger to himself and his family. Mote was committed to the Eastern Insane Hospital near Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mote would remain in the Easter Insane Hospital until his death on February 26, 1898. Mote is buried in the Earlham Cemetery in Richmond, Indiana.

Jonathan Thompson Walton zachary May 7, 1896 — January 24, 1969 while waiting to go overseas. Zachary was the rare player who had never played minor league baseball. After returning from France at the end of the war, there is conflicting information regarding how he came to be a professional baseball player. According to one source, Connie Mack was looking for pitchers. In 1918, Zachary supposedly walked into Shibe Park and asked to see Mack. He was directed to Mack’s office where he said that he might have “bragged

on myself.” Mack told him to go to the clubhouse and get a uniform. Mack said that he would come down and watch him pitch. After Zachary had thrown for a while, Mack said that he would pay him $250.00 starting then. Zachary wasn’t sure he wanted to play professional baseball. He thought he might want to pitch for Guilford College again. Zachary told Mack that he wanted $300.00. Mack stated that he would not pay that amount, but if Zachary would stick around for a few weeks and that if he could pitch, he might pay as much as $500.00. Zachary said that he and Mack shook hands and he stayed. On July 11, 1918, Mack told Zachary that he could start against the Browns. Zachary still didn’t know if he wanted to play pro ball. He stated that he wanted to play under his correct name. Mack said “That’s alright, today, you’ll be Zach Walton. He led the American League in wins with 18 in 1921. Zachary ended his career with 186 wins, 191 losses, 24 shutouts, 22 saves, 720 strikeouts, and a 3.73 earned run average. Zachary is best known for giving up Babe Ruth’s 60th home run in 1927 After Zachary retired, he returned to Burlington, North Carolina to raise tobacco and invest in real estate. On January 16, 1931, he married Etta McBane of Asheville, North Carolina. Zachary and his wife were the parents of two children, Tom Zachary, Jr. and Sally Zachary. Zachary died January 24m, 1969 and was buried in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, North Carolina. In 1966, Zachary was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

from 60 to 250 pounds, be 13-30 inches tall and live 12-15 years. A typical farm pig, destined for slaughter, could weigh up to 770 pounds and be 35-71 inches tall. Planning Director Matthew Johnson is opposed to the amendment. “Essentially what this does is to allow anybody in a residential-zoned neighborhood to be able to keep an unlimited number of the pigs as long as they are 300 pounds or less,” Johnson said. “I’m not sure we could define the word ‘pet’.” Johnson has checked other municipalities and most prohibit pigs in city limits but, if they are permitted, there is a limit of two. Herron has 10. All but three of the public comments at the meeting were against allowing pigs inside town limits. Several speakers were nearby property owners. One speaker brought up that Herron should have checked local and state ordinances before acquiring her first pig. “The proposed ordinance is dangerous,” said Elizabeth Van Horn. “It’s a hog farm,” said Fred Plunkett. “Nobody wants to live near a hog farm.” Rich Salyards, who lives several miles away, pointed out that once the Town makes an exception to a rule, it opens up the chance that other people will want an exception. The two positive speakers were Herron’s son and a friend. “They are pets,” said Sam Herron. “We do not eat them or sell them. We clean them. When they die they are buried or cremated.” “When Lori has a sei-

Jamestown Rotary Club was recognized for 20182019 as a Sustaining Organization, meaning all its members donated $100 to the Rotary Foundation. The foundation distributes funds throughout the year to help others and a portion of what the local club donates comes back to help its own community. One speaker was not opposed to the text amendment but said it was too broad and would cause future problems. A roll call vote by Planning Board members resulted in a unanimous decision to deny the text amendment as presented and to recommend the decision to the Town Council, which will likely hold a public hearing on the topic at its Aug. 20 meeting. Johnson would like the Council to request his department do more research and suggest an ordinance update which would better define the requirements for keeping “miniature” or “pot-bellied” pigs in residentially zoned areas, as well as guidelines for limitations on the keeping of other animals (cats, dogs, exotic pets, etc.), including numbers and conditions for each. The matter began when the town’s Planning Department received an anonymous phone call on Feb. 26 of this year complaining of “trash and odors” coming from Herron’s residence. Johnson investigated and found a large pile of plumbing rubbish in the yard. When he attempted to go to the front door to speak with the owner, his access was blocked by a fence enclosing 10 pigs. Johnson called to request a meeting, which was set up and then canceled. Johnson then sent a notice on Feb. 27 outlining several violations and requesting the rubbish be removed within 10 days and the pigs within 30

days. The plumbing trash was removed but Herron requested an additional 60 days to find a new home for the pigs, thus moving the date of compliance to May 27. Herron attended the Town Council meeting May 21 and asked to be allowed to keep the pigs on her property. She said she had been told in the past by the Town that the pigs were not a problem. They had become members of her family and she presented a letter from her doctor saying they were emotional support animals. In other business, Eddie Oakley, Sherrie Richmond and Steve Monroe volunteered to be on the Comprehensive Plan Update Steering Committee. A fourth member will be appointed in the future. The Comprehensive Plan is a planning tool that is the guiding document for the Planning Board and Town Council. It addresses growth, land use, development, infrastructure, parks and recreation, and historic preservation. Public meetings will be held in upcoming months to learn the community’s thoughts on needs of the town. The current Comprehensive Plan was developed in 2010 and the 2020 Land Development Plan in 2007. The 2007 Parks & Recreation Master Plan is currently being updated but it, along with the LDP, 2008 Downtown Market Assessment, 2008 Land Development Ordinance, 2010 Deep River Train Plan and 1996 Urban Design Assistance Team (UDAT) Plan, will be updated and consolidated into a master policy document.

The bypass project looking east from Oakdale Road. “The impacts to Jamestown are tremendous,” said Steve Auman, another bypass foe. He later stated he was proud of the battle his group had fought for several years. “If we have done everything we can do, then we can have no regrets,” he said. The mayor’s son, George Ragsdale, addressed the Town Council on Sept. 19, 2006, calling for an independent study to determine the effects of the bypass. He had already commissioned a private study on his own. “The results were very, very, very disheartening,” Ragsdale told the Council. “The way the road is currently laid out, you couldn’t get to Jamestown if you wanted to. I’m afraid the town of Jamestown will not be able to survive if we don’t have something to attract people.” He further stated he believed Jamestown had the power to stop the bypass but town officials had failed to take a stand on the issue. Groups in opposition were still at it as the final public hearing for the bypass project was held May 22, 2007, at Ragsdale High School. A letter sent out by Auman stated the committee “still recommends that this project, as currently designed, be removed from the TIP and further proceedings be halted” until issues can be addressed. Town council opposes bypass The Jamestown Town Council issued a resolution July 17, 2007, opposing the bypass and asking NCDOT to remove project U-2412, the official name, from the state’s Transportation Improvement Program. It was a tie vote until Mayor

Ragsdale broke the tie during a conference call. Councilmembers Volz and Brock Thomas were in favor of the resolution, while members Emily Ragsdale and Charles Dowdy opposed it. “I’ve talked with Mayor (Keith) Holliday (of Greensboro) and Mayor (Becky) Smothers (of High Point) and they both think the money can be better spent,” Ragsdale said. Holliday had said the previous week that he believed the project was no longer as high a priority today as it was when it was first conceived. He later clarified his statement to say a widening project was needed. “I’m still in favor of the road,” said Emily Ragsdale. “We may not need it now or maybe not in five years, but in 20 years we will.” “I’m also still in favor of the road,” Dowdy said. “I think we are gong to regret this.” The High Point Urban Area Technical Coordinating Committee (TAC), part of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, also affirmed the Council’s resolution. Jamestown officials addressed the MPO on Sept. 25 to state their case. The group agreed to support the Town in its efforts to get the NCDOT to take a second look at the design of a portion of the road. UPCOMING: Numerous problems delay construction.

The US women are winners, not victims By Rich lowry

The women of the U.S. national soccer team are famous for being extraordinary athletes, repeat world champions — and plaintiffs. The team’s lawsuit alleging pay discrimination against the U.S. Soccer Federation has done much to define its identity. A nearly perfect run through the World Cup has been widely interpreted as vindication of the merits of its case, so much so that fans chanted “equal pay” after the U.S. victory in the final over the Netherlands and booed the head of FIFA, the sponsor of the World Cup, during the trophy ceremony. It’s not to take anything away from the women’s achievement — they never trailed the entire tournament — to note that the equal-pay complaint is almost entirely bunk. It is true that the American women, who sweat and practice as much as their male compatriots (perhaps more, given their superior results), don’t make as much. But the women’s game isn’t as popular or profitable, which fundamentally drives pay. The total prize money for the women’s 2019 World Cup was $30 million, with the champion taking away about $4 million. The total prize money for the men’s 2018 World Cup was $400 million, with the champions winning $38 million. This seems blatantly unfair, until you take into account the completely different viewership and revenue from the two events. FIFA raked in more than $6 billion from the 2018 men’s World Cup. The women’s 2019 World Cup has been projected, when all is said and done, to make about $130 million. The women’s tournament this year may have garnered about a billion viewers across all platforms, nothing to sneeze at, but the 2018 men’s World Cup had more than a bil-

lion viewers just for the final game. The lawsuit’s explanation for a smaller audience for the women’s team is what it calls “manufactured revenue depression,” a deliberate effort by the federation to squelch the women’s reach and undercut their ticket prices. Perhaps the federation should have done more, and can do more, to promote the women’s game, but the smaller women’s audience can’t be the work of one organization. Another element of pay for women’s and men’s players is their play for professional leagues, where the scale of the audiences is, again, vastly different. The National Women’s Soccer League has two strong teams that average more than 10,000 fans per game, but the other seven teams in the league average fewer than 5,000. Sky Blue FC, based in Piscataway, New Jersey, averages 1,432. By way of comparison, the worst of the men’s Major League Soccer teams, the Chicago Fire, averages 11,417. The bestattended team, Atlanta United, has drawn roughly 70,000 people for four home games this season, about the total attendance for all NWSL games so far. The women and men have two different collective bargaining agreements, and different World Cup hoops to jump through, so making direct apple-to-apple comparisons is complicated. It’s hard to argue, though, with the simple approach the women say that they have proposed in the past — revenue sharing based on how much money they bring in. There’s risk to this arrangement if the women underperform, but this group is nothing if not self-confident, and so far has always delivered.

Opossum might make a good neighbor By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A family of possums has moved in under my porch. They are hideous looking. Are they a threat to my cat? — Julia in New Jersey DEAR JULIA: Healthy opossums pose little or no threat to your cat, as long as it doesn’t bother them. As scary as their pointed faces appear, opossums (pronounced “possums”) are not a threat to pets nor to you. In fact, they can be beneficial. Opossums are nocturnal creatures that avoid other wildlife — meaning they move around mostly at night and try to stay out of the way of, well, anything bigger than them. If you’re out at night and accidently come face to face with an opossum — as I’ve done occasionally, especially growing up in the South — you’ll probably get hissed at, which is frightening, but not attacked. When threatened, they often

flop over and emit a foul-smelling fart. (They’re not really “playing dead,” as it’s a reaction triggered by stress). Opossums may not even do structural damage under your porch, unlike raccoons and other small mammals. Opossums really are remarkable animals. They’re the only marsupial in North America, carrying their young in a pouch. (Possums without the “o” are an entirely different marsupial species found in Australia and the south Pacific region.) Opossums are omnivorous and eat snakes (even poisonous ones), slugs, grubs and roaches. They are reportedly resistant to the rabies virus and to Lyme disease, and they even eat ticks with no ill effects — up to 5,000 per year! If you still don’t want a family of opossums around, contact a pest removal service to trap the family and release them safely somewhere else. DEAR DR. ROACH: Last summer I went camping and ran out of clean water. I had to boil water and drink it without any treatment tablets. That evening, I had painful cramps in my stomach, and in my upper abdomen, under my ribcage. Since then, my digestion has been horrific. I have constant rank gas and bloating when eating foods I’ve never had a problem with before, even fruits and vegetables. I have been a big eater of probiotic foods, with no digestive disturbances. However, since this incident, any form of probiotic, whether from capsule or natural foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, gives me the worst gas and bloating I’ve ever had. I had parasite and bacterial stool testing done with my doctor, and I came up clear. I feel like I need antibiotics or something to clear whatever is going on with my digestive system, but I’m hesitant because I have had four rounds of antibiotics in 2017 from surgeries. I am worried about “beaver fever.” What do you recommend? — A.L. DEAR A.L.: There are several infections one can get from

drinking unprocessed water while camping. “Beaver fever” is a name for infection from the parasite Giardia lamblia, which is found in water where animals (especially beavers) are found. It’s a reasonable thought — it’s one of the few waterborne infections that can persist for months. However, I think Giardia is unlikely. Symptoms from Giardia normally begin one to two weeks after exposure, and the parasites are killed very rapidly by boiling water. Your symptoms are very much like irritable bowel syndrome, and I do wonder if it might have been triggered by some event that day you were camping. Usually, three sets of cultures for parasites are done to make sure there isn’t an unwelcome guest in your intestine causing symptoms. A gastroenterologist would be a good choice to help you track down an identifiable cause and to get some symptomatic relief. Antibiotics are not recommended without knowing what you are treating. Couch Theatre By AMy ANdERSON Pet Sematary (R) — Everything old is new again as directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer rehash Stephen King’s 1983 novel about occult influences in the graveyard. Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and family relocate to bucolic Maine. After Creed suffers a surprisingly real, prophetic dream, the family cat dies and neighbor Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) takes Creed to a special burial ground to inter it under the watchful eye of the Wendigo. When the cat pops back up the next day, events begin to spiral out of control, including the death and regeneration of Creed’s young daughter. But as

they say in the movie (and the other movie, and the book), sometimes, dead is better. Overall, the pace is terribly slow, and while there are some creepy visuals, it’s more jump scare than true terror. Black-eyed peas, please By ANgELA SHELF MEdEARIS KITCHeN DIVA Black-eyed peas have had a tremendous influence on both my writing and culinary career. My first book for children was entitled “Picking Peas for a Penny.” It was a rhyming story about my mother and my Uncle John picking blackeyed peas for a penny a bushel basket on my grandparents’ farm in Oklahoma during the 1940s. Black-eyed peas also figure prominently in my career as a cookbook author and chef. Blackeyed peas, okra, peanuts and sesame seeds, and the oil they produce, are documented contributions from Africa via the slave trade to our American cuisine. I prepared black-eyed peas any number of ways while doing research for my first cookbook “The African-American Kitchen.” Originally from Africa, blackeyed peas are one of the most widely dispersed beans in the world. It was a nutritious staple in Africa long before it was brought to the American South. Blackeyed peas are often called blackeyed beans, or China peas (their bushy vines grew wild in Asia). Another name for the black-eyed pea is “cowpea,” as it was used in animal food. Although called a pea, the black-eyed pea is actually an edible “bean.” Both peas and beans are legumes, and both have edible seeds and pods. The most common commercial black-eyed pea is called the California Blackeye. It is pale-colored with a prominent black spot. Black-eyed peas are extremely nourishing, both to people and to the soil. If you’re looking for a delicious way to lose weight and improve

your health, here are some reasons to eat more black-eyed peas: — Black-eyed peas are a lowfat and low-calorie food. Onehalf cup of black-eyed peas is generally less than 100 calories and contains about 1 gram of fat. Their protein helps cells grow and repair and provides energy to your body. — If you need more potassium and usually eat bananas and avocados, try adding more blackeyed peas to your diet! A 1/2-cup serving of cooked from dry blackeyed peas contains 239 mg of potassium, and the same amount from a can has 206 mg. Potassium is a nutrient that helps keep your blood pressure at healthy levels, which lowers your risk of heart disease. It also supports the health of your muscles and bones. — Protein also supports most parts of your body, including muscles, skin, hair and nails. Onehalf cup of dry and cooked blackeyed peas contains 6.7 grams of protein, and a 1/2 cup of canned black-eyed peas contains 5.7 grams. — Black-eyed peas are rich in iron, helping to prevent anemia, which produces fatigue and weakness. Iron helps carry oxygen throughout your body to your organs, cells and muscles. A 1/2 cup serving of canned black-eyed peas has 1.2 mg of iron, while 1/2 cup cooked from dry black-eyed peas contains 2.2 mg. — Black-eyed peas are high in vitamin B9 and rich in folate. Studies show that folate sourced from food can cut your risk of pancreatic cancer by up to 60 percent. Folate also helps with cell formation and is especially important during pregnancy. Black-eyed peas also contain thiamine, one of the B vitamins.

If you can, get fresh black-eyed peas; they cook up in no time. But if you can’t get them fresh, then use the frozen or canned variety. Whichever you choose, they’ll be delicious in this recipe for Texas Caviar. It’s a flavorful and nutritious dip that keeps for up to two weeks in the refrigerator. TEXAS CAVIAR 2 (15-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded and finely chopped 1/2 green bell pepper, cored, seeded and finely chopped 1 small red onion, finely chopped

together vinegar, stevia, honey or agave syrup, garlic powder, salt, pepper, vegetable oil and hot sauce. 3. Pour dressing over blackeyed pea mixture and toss to coat. Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight. Stir before serving. Makes 12 servings.
