Forestdale Plaza sold By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Forestdale Plaza Shopping Center, at 108 W. Main St., commonly known as the Food Lion Shopping Center, has been sold to Peters Development of High Point under a special warranty deed. The sale price of the 6.36-acre site was $6.95 million. The property was previously owned by RCC Forestdale, LLC, and TF Forestdale, LLC, both of Richmond, Va. Bethany Medical Center, which is a part of Peters Development, has leased a vacant portion of the center for a clinic. Dr. Lenny Peters, founder and CEO, told an area newspaper that there will be five

medical providers in the location offering primary care, urgent care, specialty care and pain management services. The center also houses Subway and Domino’s Pizza. Peters Development plans to make improvements to the façades, signage and parking lot. Forestdale Plaza is the first venture out of High Point for Peters Development, which has been purchasing several shopping centers in the larger city in recent months. Just days after the July 8 purchase of Forestdale Plaza, the company purchased Oxford Station on North Main Street. It is not known if Peters will rename Forestdale as Peters V, following the naming convention of the company’s other acquisitions.

Future land use discussed By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com What might Jamestown look like in 2030? That’s the vision the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee is considering. The Committee has met several times in recent weeks with the focus being on future land use for the town. Vagn Hansen, with Benchmark Planning, led discussions about 14 possible categories, or districts, for these areas. One new category of interest to many in Jamestown is the Mill District, centered around the former Oakdale Cotton Mill. “The intent of this land use classification is to foster the preservation and revitalization of the mill and traditional mill village in a manner that both preserves the rich history of Oakdale while transitioning the mill village into a mixed-use development focused on the mill and spurring additional residential development on the property,” Hansen said. Putting an actual designation to the mill area could meet with opposition. Martha Wolfe represents the Town Council on this committee and recalled that several years ago there was pushback from residents along Oakdale Road when there was talk of establishing a Historic Commission in town. Residents believed they would be forced to abide by strict rules for their properties and the Council later rejected the application for a Commission. She

noted the west side of Oakdale Road containing the mill and village is already in the National Historic District. A district designated as Village received several comments as to its name. This area encompasses what is known as the Johnson farm along Guilford College and Mackay roads. The land was the subject of a rezoning petition for development, which was denied by the Planning Board in 2020 after months of discussion and in 2021 by the Town Council, which also denied an annexation petition. The property has since been sold to a new developer. It is the largest single undeveloped tract in Jamestown’s jurisdiction. “We see this as one of the premier development tracts in the Triad,” Hansen said. “Given the size and prominent location of this tract, the Town is expecting it to be developed in a manner that creates an integrated, walkable and mixed-use ‘village’ “This would contain a wide range of housing options and neighborhood types focused on a ‘village center’ that provides neighborhood-scale convenience, retail, entertainment and services that residents can easily access on foot or bike.” Hansen expects this area would exceed standard residential development while still being consistent with the character and quality of development found in the see land, page 2

William J. White scholarships hit 40-year milestone By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Since 1981, select area high school seniors who participated in the Colt Baseball League for 15-16 year-olds have received Bill White Scholarships to attend the college or university of their choice. The criteria include academic excellence, exemplary citizenship and financial need. The scholarship fund was established in 1980 following White’s death from cancer. White was responsible for starting Colt Baseball locally in 1965. Bobby Dawson received the first scholarship in 1981, and since then (including 2021) 291 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $265,000. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $2,500. Included among the 2021 Bill White Scholarship recipients are Ragsdale students Win Scott and Chadwick Carpenter. Both will attend N.C. State University. Win Scott Scott began his baseball career at the age of four when his parents Mark and Marcia signed him up to play tee-ball with the Jamestown Youth League. Games were held on the fields behind Jamestown Elementary School. “It was apparent very early that his arm was special,” Mark said. “The coaches were shocked at how far he threw the ball.” The next year, Mark requested that, if possible, his son play for a coach with a baseball background because he wanted him to learn from someone who knew all the fundamentals. After one practice, he asked if Win could play with the older kids coached by Richard Walls and the league allowed the transition. Scott continued to play baseball, participating on his middle and

Chad Carpenter and Win Scott high school teams – primarily as a pitcher. He also ran track, played basketball his sophomore year and football his senior year. Although he enjoys all sports, from the time he was in middle school, baseball has been his favorite. “My junior year, I locked in on that,” the Jamestown resident said. On May 5, Scott pitched a perfect game against the Grimsley High School team. His was only the 59th perfect game in NCHSAA history and the first seven-inning perfect game in Guilford County. Scott’s dad credits Colt baseball with helping improve his son’s game. “The Greensboro Colt baseball league is solid on so many levels, but we believe the summer high school league was key in the development of our son as a baseball player,” Mark said. In August 2020, Scott committed to play baseball for State. He plans to major in business administration while in college. Although that is a competitive field, Scott feels he can bring something unique to the table

and noted there are always going to be business jobs. “My ultimate career goal would be to play pro baseball,” Scott admitted. Due to the credits he has achieved through his high school academic classes and by participating in summer school sessions in college, Scott possibly could graduate after his junior year and be eligible for the draft. (Scott was featured in the May 26 issue of Jamestown News after pitching his perfect game.) Chad Carpenter Compared to some youth, Carpenter might be considered a late bloomer to the game of baseball. He was 8 years old before he began to play in a coach-pitched league. “My dad did not want me to play until I could catch and throw,” Carpenter said with a smile. “We had plenty of long-night practices in our backyard.” As he was growing up and throughout school, Carpenter parsee white, page 2

Incumbents, others file for town government At the end of the first week of the July 2-16 candidate filing period, it appeared Jamestown would retain its current mayor and Town Council as no challengers appeared. But judging from the final day of filing, that scenario might be in jeopardy. Two opponents, Michael Young and Robert Frederick, filed to unseat sitting Mayor Lynn Montgomery. Young is the husband of Lori Herron whose pig battle with the town is still undecided. Frederick is a frequent criticizer of the local government and this is his third bid for the mayoral position. According to North Carolina

General Statute 163-294, “there shall be a primary to narrow the field of candidates to two candidates for each position to be filled.” Therefore, a primary election for mayor will be held Oct. 5. The two with the most votes will go on to the general election Nov. 2. Seven candidates have filed for Council positions and winners will be chosen in the general election. Joining incumbents John Capes, Rebecca Mann Rayborn, Lawrence Straughn and Martha Stafford as Council candidates are Darren Myers, Al Stewart and Dave Cohen. Cohen previously ran in 2019. This year will be the beginning of staggered terms for the four councilmembers and a new term

for mayor, based on an ordinance adopted by the Council May 21, 2019. The candidate winning the mayoral position will serve a four-year term. The two candidates for Town Council who receive the highest number of votes will be elected for four-year terms, with the next two highest vote-getters serving two-year terms. At the municipal election in 2023, and every four years thereafter, two members of the Council will be elected to serve four-year terms. Thus, a maximum of half of the Council would be elected every two years. The next election of the Jamestown mayor would be held in 2025. The new Council and mayor will be sworn in Dec. 21.

Incumbents speak Current councilmembers and Mayor Montgomery comment on their years of service and goals. Comments from challengers will appear in a future Jamestown News. Mayor Lynn Montgomery “We have seen many changes in Jamestown over the past few years and have more on the horizon. The development of the Johnson Farm property and selection of a new town manager are two of the items that the Council will be asked to address in the near future. I feel that my experience in representing the

citizens and leading the Council would be of benefit to the town during the next term.” Councilmember John Capes “I believe that everything we have accomplished has been built not only from our own personal sweat equity but from all of the councils and individuals that preceded us. “It’s no secret that there is a heightened awareness of property development issues and the downstream impact of that development to the future of Jamestown. continued from front and special town here. I intend to do my part to help keep it that way while also helping the previously mentioned development process for the best interest of all involved. While doing that, I also want to protect and advocate for our town and it’s history, including revitalization of Oakdale Cotton Mill.” Councilmember Rebecca Mann Rayborn “I have a strong understanding of the needs and desires of Jamestown residents and want to ensure that any new development in town enhances our community, benefits those of us

who have lived here for generations, and allows us to retain our ‘small town’ feel. “With the anticipated opening of the Jamestown Bypass closer than ever, I would love to work with the Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit on Guilford Road and Main Street, and to make our downtown more pedestrianand bicycle-friendly. “I am also interested in seeing new ways that we could utilize current employees – chiefly in seeing if our stellar sanitation crew could also take over our recycling pickup. I want to see historic designations in town expanded where appropriate so significant structures can be shielded from future development. I also want to continue encouraging community involvement – especially on projects that bring together residents from different generations.” Councilmember Lawrence Straughn “I am not finished serving. I believe the Council leadership is part vision, part statutory, and part voice of the people of our town. Our current Council seeks input. I want that to continue no matter who may be elected to serve. “We have before us a future development that could greatly and forever change the landscape of

Jamestown; the future development on Guilford College at Mackay Road, commonly called the Johnson Farm. It needs to be a quality build. “The Bypass has really stepped up. Its appearance and how it re-designs parts of Jamestown have become more evident. I want to see it continue its course and see the least amount of disruption to our citizens as possible. Although it’s diverting a portion of traffic around us, I want our town to continue to thrive, to grow, and flourish as tastefully as possible.” Councilmember Martha Stafford Wolfe “Several changes have taken place during my two terms, including the East Fork Road Pedestrian Bridge and sidewalk, upgraded audio and video equipment to record and stream Council meetings, staggered terms for the Town Council and strategic goals adopted for the Town. “There are several unfinished projects I would like to see to the end, including the Lydia (East Main Street) sidewalk and Oakdale Road sidewalk, Recreation Maintenance building and Comprehensive Plan update. “I think it is important that the Oakdale Mill and mill village be revitalized and a strategic grown plan for Jamestown and the ETJ areas be developed.”

ticipated in many sports including baseball, basketball, football, volleyball and swimming. “I fell in love with baseball,” he said. “It was my favorite and I devoted more time to it. Baseball gave me an opportunity to travel and play teams from other places.” Carpenter played baseball in middle school and throughout high school, as well as with the NCBA Golden Spikes during the summer. Playing with the Colt League enabled him to apply for the Bill White scholarship. At Ragsdale he played shortstop and pitcher, but says his favorite position was third base. Carpenter has considered trying out for the baseball team at State as a walk-on or participating on a club team. “I still enjoy the game and want to be part of it,” he said. “It is also a good way to meet new people.” Besides baseball, studying took up much of Carpenter’s time during high school. He was salutatorian of his senior class and also earned a service-learning diploma. He plans to major in bio-medical engineering in college. A friend influenced that decision. “He majored in that and it opened a lot

of doors for him,” Carpenter said. “There are so many more efficient ways to practice medicine and having this degree is a way I can help people.” Carpenter is the son of Carl and Kim Carpenter of Greensboro and has an older sister, Hope. He is working during the summer as a lifeguard at Lindley Pool in Greensboro. When time allows, he enjoys fishing, golf and disc golf. His advice to other young people is to try a variety of sports until they find one they like best, then focus on it. “But it is important to remember, they are games,” Carpenter said. “They are supposed to be fun.” Carpenter and Scott, along with 11 other former Colt players, were award their scholarships July 21 between the opening night games of the Colt East Zone Tournament at Stoner-White Stadium in Greensboro. White’s grand-daughter, Courtney Lowrance, and Dawson presented checks and plaques to the recipients. “I think the Colt League is a goodhearted organization,” Carpenter said. “It is cool that we could still (reap the benefits of playing ball with the league) after the fact.”

continued from front greater Jamestown community.” “The term ‘village’ doesn’t sound like it is part of Jamestown,” said committee member Sherrie Richmond. Others agreed and Hansen mentioned that word might have a bad connotation at this time. “Part of this [process] is coming up with the right names for this,” Hansen said. He noted the current Future Land Use map designates this property both as suburban residential and traditional neighborhood. The town center district runs from Ragsdale Road along Main Street to Guilford Road and includes the traditional downtown area. “The classification is intended to support and perpetuate the walkable, mixeduse development pattern in the core of the town,” Hansen said. “This area serves as the economic, cultural and civic heart of the community. Traditional development patterns have buildings constructed adjacent to the sidewalks to create an inviting atmosphere for pedestrians while parking and service areas are located to the rear or sides of buildings.” Hanson presented some Main Street improvements, such as a reduced speed limit to 25 mph on Main Street, no center turn lanes, which would create room

for bicycle lanes, and more and wider sidewalks. More crossings were also suggested as well as some type of traffic management at the Main Street/Guilford Road intersection. He also pointed to the need to redevelop the parcel of land on Main Street across from the Oakdale Road intersection which houses several vacant buildings, as well as developing a “linear park” on the thin strip of land across from Forestdale Plaza Shopping Center and abutting the railroad. Hansen believes there is a need for a “downtown gateway” area near the library that would alert travelers they are entering the downtown business section. Several other categories elicited few comments from committee members. “The goal is not to make any immediate changes to [existing] zoning,” Hansen said. “This can influence and inspire future changes. It does not mandate it.” “Future land use and zoning are not the same,” said Planning Director Matthew Johnson. “This is not saying, ‘this is what is allowed.’ We’re not talking about permitted uses or names of zoning districts. “We’re trying to get a feel what you think this area might be in the future.”

Recipes for Life By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva Dear Readers: Over a decade ago, I was given the wonderful opportunity to work King Features Weekly Service to create The Kitchen Diva! food and lifestyle column. Editor Jim Clarke helped me to craft 800 words, including a recipe, into a user-friendly and, hopefully, entertaining format each week, year in and year out. This is my last column for King Features, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jim for being such an extraordinary editor, the King Features Weekly Service staff and all of you for your interest and support of my work. I’ve enjoyed reading your emails, searching for recipes that you loved and lost, and answering questions about your cooking dilemmas. I feel like I’ve made thousands of new friends over the years. I can’t thank you all enough for the privilege of doing what I love, and the honor of being able to share my thoughts and new discoveries with you each week. When I started The Kitchen Diva column, I was transitioning into the culinary world after writing more than 100 children’s books and visiting schools and presenting speeches at literacy conferences all over the U.S. and Europe. My love affair with studying culinary history, writing about food, creating recipes, publishing cookbooks and doing cooking demos as The Kitchen Diva! is an odd turn of events considering I was never a great cook. My mother, Angeline, is a wonderful cook, among her many other artistic talents, so I never felt the need to try to cook anything when I was growing up. My mother’s decision to supplement her income by baking and selling her fabulous pies was the impetus of my career change. But instead of baking and selling pies, my

sister Sandra suggested that I write a cookbook containing her recipes. I taught myself how to cook and to write a recipe as part of the educational process of creating my first cookbook, “The African American Kitchen,” with lots of help from my mother and my sister Marcia. I had no idea how labor-intensive, expensive (we bought all of the ingredients and tested over 150 recipes) and challenging this cookbook would be. I spent two years studying culinary history and heritage recipes from Africa, South America, the Caribbean, old Southern “receipts and scripts” and the African-influenced melting pot of cuisines that make up the foundation of the way that we eat in America today. Over the past two decades, I’ve also observed the impact of recipes, handed down from generation to generation and prepared for the people you love, to bond together a family or to welcome new friends. It’s those recipes for life that have held me in good stead through the horrible and heartbreaking national and personal events during the pandemic last year. Jim, my editor at King Features, took over my column in order to allow me to take the time that I needed to run The Kitchen Diva’s Health Outreach, a division of Book Boosters, our families’ non-profit education, health and social-service agency. We were able to distribute hundreds of prepared meals, and to purchase canned and packaged foods to establish onsite pantries for families living in apartments in underserved communities here in Austin, Texas, during the pandemic and the horrible winter storm last year. I want to devote more time to operating our nonprofit health outreach division and focus on educating and empowering people all over the world about ways to combat diabetes and diet-related illnesses using every form of media.

Angela Shelf Medearis with her mother, Angeline So, dear readers, as a tribute to my mother, Angeline, who LOVES collard greens, I’m sharing one of her favorite recipes with you. Enjoy, and “see” you soon! ANGELINE’S EASY COLLARD GREENS 1 large bunch (about 10 ounces) collard greens 3 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil 1 red bell pepper, seeded, ribs removed and thinly sliced 1 yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons balsamic or red wine vinegar 1. Wash the greens in cool water to remove any dirt. Cut the thick central ribs out of the collard greens. Stack the leaves on top of one another. Starting at one end,

roll them up into a cigar-liked shape, then slice across the roll to make the greens into thin strips about 1/8-inch wide, and cut again lengthwise. 2. Place a large, heavy bottomed skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and heat for a minute. Then add the greens and all of the rest of the ingredients except for the vinegar. Cook the greens, stirring every 30-seconds to combine the ingredients and cook them through, about 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Transfer the collards to a serving bowl, sprinkle them with the vinegar, stir and serve immediately. Serves 4.

Make summer sand candles By donna erickson Donna's Day: Creative Family Fun Like most people, I enjoy taking long walks on the beach. I love the feel of sand under my feet and the way it stretches for miles before me. And then I suddenly feel inspired, thinking of the ways sand can be used in decor and crafts. That’s when I know it’s time to go home and have some more fun. Here’s a popular sand craft kids enjoy at day camp year after year. The adults melt the wax and the kids create the molds and add decorations for state-of-the-art sand candles. With a child’s touch, they’re whimsical, spontaneous and useful. To make candle at home, you’ll need: — Clean, damp sand in a bucket or sandbox — 1 pound box of paraffin wax (available in canning section at many markets) — 1 saucepan — 1 tin can, such as a large soup can with lid removed (Pinch rim of the can with pliers to form a spout for easy pouring) — Candle coloring or stubs from colored candles

(optional) — Candle wicking (available at craft stores) — Pencil or sticks — Tiny trinkets, stones or shells (optional) Here’s the fun: 1. Carve out a 2-3 inch depression in the damp sand, about 3-4 inches wide. Pat the sides and base of the depression to make a very firm mold for your candle. Press several trinkets into the mold, if you wish.

2. Meanwhile, an adult should fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and set the tin can in the center. Put a chunk of paraffin in the can, and add candle stubs or coloring, if you wish. As the water gets hot, the wax will melt. Stir occasionally, keeping a constant eye on it, since it is flammable. 3. An adult should carefully pour the melted wax into the sand mold. While the wax is still liquid, place a length of wicking down the center of the mold with at least one inch of wicking exposed at the top. Hold the wick in place until the wax begins to harden. Then, prop the wick with a stick until the wax is completely hard. Or, tie the wick around the middle of a pencil and let it rest across the top of the mold with the wick in the wax. 4. When hard, gently lift the candle out of the sand mold. Brush off excess sand from the candle and embedded trinkets with an old toothbrush, leaving some sand on the surface for a natural look. Note: An adult should always be present when burning candles.

Railey follows the less than perfect investigation. There were a number of promising suspects including the boy Brenda Holland dated on the evening and early morning of June 30/July 1, his roommate, another boy who had recently sexually assaulted Holland, the grandson of an Episcopal minister, a local dentist, and a Black man who had been accused by a woman seeking revenge. Railey gives a critical review of the sheriff’s treatment of all the suspects, but, in the end, he does not charge any of them. A great strength of Railey’s rendition of the story is the suspense he creates for the reader, who will not know Railey’s conclusion about the actual killer until the very end. He puts his readers in the shoes of Sheriff Cahoon as he does his best to crack the case. Then he leads them through Railey’s research and the basis for his persuasive conclusion about the real killer’s identity. The charm of the book goes beyond the author’s story-telling gifts. He takes readers back to the 1960s on the Outer Banks and the town of Manteo, lovely and complicated, with its fishing and seafaring traditions. The history and relics of unsuccessful settlement in the late 1500’s and today’s production of “The Lost Colony” enrich this complex setting. Railey gives bit parts to

some famous people living in the town during the time of the murder: Andy Griffith, who made his home there, and the late powerful state legislative leader, Marc Basnight, who grew up and lived in Manteo. Railey has promised to write a biography of Griffith. I wish he would write one about Basnight. Coincidently, Basnight’s sister, Dotty, plays a major role in the book. Rainey writes that when she was 35 in 1967, “she had cut her hair into a bob and dyed it blond again. She was 35, but looked 25. The town and the beach were hers.” Thus, she looked something like Brenda Holland, and that coincidence turns out to be important to Railey later on. Ultimately, when Railey shares his conclusion about who killed Holland, he is persuasive. But we will never know if it would have been enough to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt. What we do know for sure is that Railey, already widely admired as an investigative journalist, has written a masterpiece of entertaining nonfiction. It should serve as a model for any other writer who wants to sort out an unsolved crime and write a readable and entertaining book about it.
