Roney girls follow mother’s footsteps By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com It’s a good bet that before Elaina and Hanna Roney graduated from college – in 2019 and 2020 respectively – they already knew what they wanted to do with their lives. After interning several years with their mother, attorney Georgia Nixon, the logical step for the girls was to go into law. And they picked their mother’s alma mater, Campbell Law School, to follow in her footsteps. Elaina, 23, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, worked with her mother and in her grandparents’ restaurant for a year, waiting for Hannah, 22, to graduate

from the University of South Carolina. Both were political science majors and that background helped them get into several law schools, but they chose Campbell. “It made sense,” Hannah said. “It’s a very good school and I wanted to stay in North Carolina.” “It was always where I wanted to go,” Elaina said. “It’s a great school,” said Nixon of her alma mater. Nixon graduated from Campbell in 1990 but attended in Buies Creek, N.C. The law school moved to Raleigh in 2009. “I’m super excited they’re going together,” Nixon said, “and to my alma mater.” Both girls admit their mother’s profession definitely influenced their

decision to study law. “We grew up knowing it,” Elaina said. “It’s always been in the back of my mind.” Hannah went into college undecided then found she liked government and history. “Going to court with [Mom] was always interesting,” Hannah added. “It was interesting to hear her cases. “I don’t necessarily want to do the same type of law, but it was a huge push in that direction. There are so many kinds that I haven’t even seen. I’m excited to explore all opportunities.” Elaina also is excited to learn all the different kinds of law from which to choose. Wyndham returns Colt Baseball participants next month receive Bill White Scholarships without spectators By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com

The Wyndham Championship returns to Sedgefield Country Club Aug. 13-16. Spectators, however, will not be returning. The PGA tour made the decision July 12 and the ban on spectators includes the remaining PGA and FedEx Cup playoff season. Players are used to having fans cheering them on and those surrounding the greens will indicate how well the approach shot did.

The golfers say all the energy on the course helps. On the other hand, these days there are no distractions from fans yelling “you da man” or “in the hole” SEE WyNdHAM, PAGe 5

Comp Plan committee has to work around virus barriers By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com In a few weeks, drivers through some neighborhoods will see representatives of the U.S. Census knocking on select doors in town of people who had not filled out their census information. Additionally, a different group of representatives might be seen canvassing perhaps the entire town of Jamestown to receive input on the upcoming revision to the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee has met virtually several times during the COVID-19 quarantine, most recently on June 22 and July 6. The group, which included town staff and Vagn Hansen from Benchmark Planning, wrestled with how to best get the community – town and extra-territorial jurisdiction residents – involved in the document which will act as a guide for land use, development, capital investments and growth management decisions for the next decade and beyond. Meetings in May and June were canceled due to state

mandates that only 10 people could be in a meeting room at a time. The July or August meeting will probably also be canceled. At the June 22 meeting, the committee members discussed having community meetings within neighborhoods or developments, like Forestdale North, Whittington Hall, etc. However, they decided weather, scheduling and need to RSVP to such a meeting would be hard to accomplish. “We may do the plan without public engagement, but we don’t want to,” Hansen said. Several committee members suggested the Town delay the update until people can again meet in large groups. “We need to get results, not rush it,” said committee member Cory Rayborn. “We don’t want to get an inferior product,” said Martha Wolfe, a committee member and also a member of the Town Council. She suggested scheduling meetings for September or October, providing the virus scare is over. Matthew Johnson, Jamestown planning director, said SEE PLAN, PAGe 5

Four decades after the Bill White Scholarship was established, participants in the Colt Baseball League are still benefiting from it. In 1965, White was responsible for starting Colt Baseball locally for 15 and 16 year-olds. Following his death from cancer in 1980, the scholarship fund was created in his memory and since 1981 has continued to award scholarships to former Colt Leaguers who are entering a college or university. The criteria include academic excellence, exemplary citizenship, and financial need. Bobby Dawson was the first recipient, and to date 278 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $245,000. The amounts range from $500 to $2,000. Local 2020 recipients include Derek Martinez and Luke Pritchett, graduates of Ragsdale High School, and Tyler Lloyd of Southwest Guilford High School. • Martinez believes he has been playing baseball ever since he could walk. He explained that statement by noting his dad played baseball professionally and helped create a love of the sport in his son. “I have been involved in orga-

nized baseball since I was 3,” Martinez said. “I played on my middle school and high school teams.” Although he played football, basketball and soccer when he was younger, in high school his focus was baseball. “You do not have to be extremely athletic to play the sport, but you do have to work hard to improve your skills,” he said. Martinez was a first baseman and pitcher. He will continue to play at North Carolina A&T University where he plans to major in sports medicine. Before team play was suspended in the spring due to the coronavirus, schools were able to play five baseball games. Martinez had been injured before the season and had to sit the bench during those games. “We had a good team and it would

Tyler Lloyd have been interesting to see what we could have done,” he said. “The hardest thing is going off to college after missing a season of play and trying to stay in shape for the future. I have been participating with the HiToms (baseball team) this summer. SEE BASEBALL, PAGe 2

It’s not really meant for everybody. “Elaina would come with me and pick up on some things where I’d be arguing with the judge and she would point out [a different side].” The girls also helped their mother by filing, continuing cases, doing jail visits and sitting in on client meetings. Nixon believes their experience will help them once they pass the bar. She did not have the opportunity to intern prior to her career. “I feel really privileged to be able to have given them the leg up,” Nixon said. Growing up, both girls said there were both upsides and downsides to having a mother as a lawyer. “You never win arguments,” Hannah said, “She thinks she’s always right.” “She always has a story,” Elaina said of her mother, adding, “It’s different things every day.” “It’s an interesting job to watch,” Hannah said. Neither sister is worried about how COVID-19 will affect them in the fall semester but are concerned about how the faculty will cope with it. With the virus, two of their six classes for the fall have been canceled. Classes are currently scheduled to be conducted in person with the option for online, but Hannah expects all classes to be virtual by October. Both admit to a

dislike of virtual learning. Nixon hopes the classes will remain in person because she believes these types of classes cannot be done well online. Campbell is following guidelines issued by infections disease experts and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Large non-academic or non-course-related gatherings are not permitted and wearing facemasks on campus is required when social distancing is not possible. The school added another building to allow for smaller class sizes. Elaina and Hannah have to be in Raleigh for orientation Aug. 7, with classes beginning Aug. 17. They will be roommates in a townhouse off campus. They are undecided in which field they will specialize, but agree it will be different fields and feel working together in the same firm would be nice. Nixon specializes in state and federal criminal law. Are positions at Nixon Law in High Point a possibility? Definitely, say all three. “They have interned with me for years and they are good,” Nixon said. The sisters feel their mother will expect more of them once they become lawyers. “She’s always had high expectations, which is good,” Hannah said. “If you don’t have high expectations, you’re not really trying.” “We definitely need that extra push from her – for sure,” Elaina agreed. “I’d like to think I’ve taught them that hard work pays off,” Nixon said. “I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s a different job every day. I think I give it my all and I think I get a lot [back]. “I hope I’ve been an example for them. A good one. I’m beyond proud. I can’t wait to see where it takes them.”

“Baseball helps make you stronger mentally. If you have a bad game you just keep going. You have to work hard and be patient. Those are good life lessons.” • Pritchett, who played with Martinez on the Ragsdale team, agrees that the school team had the potential to go far. “This was going to be one of our best seasons since I was there,” he said. Pritchett has been playing baseball since he was 4 years old. In school he played corner infielder and corner outfielder. “If you understand that at baseball you fail more than you succeed you will be pretty good at the game,” Pritchett said. In the fall he will attend Barton College in Wilson, N.C., where he will major in exercise science and minor in sports management. He will also be part of the school’s baseball team. As a youth, Pritchett also played basketball and soccer, but in school his sport was strictly baseball. He says that handling life through the lens of COVID-19 has been difficult

the church,” he said. “I also participated in Young Life and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in school.” After graduating from North Carolina State University, Greene began a career selling textile machines. His life was to take a new direction, however, when he accepted an invitation from the pastor of his home church, Lafayette Street United Methodist, to participate in a church-related hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail. “Being out in the wilderness with a group of fellow Christians sparked something within me,” Greene said. “I began to lead Christian groups on hiking trips. As I got into leading more, I felt called to go into Christian ministry.”

As Greene embarks on his latest appointment at JUMC, Lara is serving as the senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in High Point. The Reverend Lara Greene can be found on WGHP FOX8 each Sunday morning at 7 a.m. Greene feels the biggest responsibility for churches during the pandemic is to offer a sense of hope. “That is what people are looking for the most,” he said. “They also are feeling a loss of community and need to be back together as a church family. I hope that can happen

sooner than later. “Even before the pandemic, people longed to be part of something with eternal significance. They want to serve and be involved in something that makes a difference. I am concerned if the coronavirus continues, it will take a toll on people.” Although much of Greene’s congregation is currently invisible to his eyes, it appears they are not invisible to his heart. “I am excited to be in Jamestown,” he said. “It seems like a wonderful community and I look forward to moving about and getting to know people. I am fortunate to be able to serve here.”

Greene helped organize the hiking groups into a non-profit ministry called Wilderness Trails. Each summer approximately 600 youths participate in hikes on the Appalachian Trail. When Greene felt the call to fulltime Christian ministry, he attended seminary at Emory University in Atlanta. It was there he met his wife Lara, who was also a seminary student. They were married during their final year of school and began serving churches in 1994. “At our request, we were assigned to minister at the same churches twice when our children were small,” Greene said. “We felt blessed to be able to serve together when they were young.”

best during those games and is happy at the prospect of playing baseball in college. The most difficult part of not having games and not going to class during the end of his senior year was missing the people he usually saw every day. Staying on top of his sport was also a challenge. “I was able to practice on the Southwest field, but it was sometimes hard to find someone to practice with,” Lloyd said. “Baseball has helped me learn to stay calm and control my emotions. It has basically helped me develop into who I am today.” All these players have participated at some point in the Colt League and appreciate the scholarships that will help them pursue their educational goals. The scholarships are normally presented at the Colt East Zone Tournament held each July in Greensboro. since no one has experienced doing that before. Pritchett is currently playing baseball for NC3, part of an independent league. Only 25 spectators may attend the games. “It is still good practice for college,” he said. “One thing I have learned in baseball is that you cannot let the last pitch or last bat define you. If you fail, you forget it and move on.” • Lloyd did not start playing baseball until the 7th grade in middle school. But that sport has received his entire attention. He has played in several positions including outfield, pitcher and first base. “I enjoy outfielder the most because you get to see the whole field and what everyone is doing,” he said. Lloyd also participated along with his school team on the Colt’s summer league. He will be playing with Pritchett on the Barton College team. His studies will include a mayor in sports management and minor in nutrition. Like his peers, Lloyd was disappointed to stop play after only five baseball games. He felt he did his

continued from front the project must be done in the current fiscal year. He added that there would be a liability issue with the Town’s insurance if there were some larger gatherings. Pam Burgess, a committee member, suggested engaging new people in the community who need to be involved. She pointed to new families moving in to neighborhoods. She went back to the notion of having meetings within communities or subdivisions to learn community input. “I really want to see the numbers representing all the communities in Jamestown,” she said. “It’s about community involvement,” said committee member Rich Salyards. “Talk to your neighbors and friends and ask them to be involved,” Johnson said. Burgess and Wolfe believed people would not do virtual meetings for something like community involvement nor would they come to outdoor meetings in the heat and humidity. Johnson suggested a recorded presentation that

would be promoted on the Town’s social media, banners, Jamestown News, flyers, etc. He suggested the steering committee go door-to-door – if they felt comfortable – to talk to residents about the presentation. The door-to-door visits could result in people signing up for small group meetings at Town Hall or virtual meetings. Johnson’s suggestion received a good response from committee members and this appears to be the plan for now. He and Hansen will work on the presentation, look at possible dates for meetings and work on promotional material. “It’s not perfect, but it can’t be perfect,” said Wolfe. “We’re trying to be creative.” A total of 580 people responded to a survey regarding the Comprehensive Plan in April and May that was available via Facebook, the Town’s website and the project’s website, www.EnvisionJamestown. com. Approximately 75 percent of respondents are

residents of Jamestown and not the town’s ETJ. “It’s a fairly large share of the population, fairly significant for a town of this size,” Hansen said. “People are engaged in Jamestown more than in a lot of [other] communities.” Over 300 of those respondents asked to be added to a mailing list to receive updates to the status of the plan. Survey questions included quality of life, primary challenges, needed services, GTCC, why respondents go downtown, parking downtown, downtown improvements needed, transportation infrastructure, walking, Deep River, impact of the bypass, preservation, parks and open space. “The survey has helped me see Jamestown in different ways and opportunities,” said Sherrie Richmond, a member of the steering committee. “I was surprised and pleased with the comments about promoting GTCC. We need to decide how to have them more involved.” Jamestown’s first com-

prehensive plan, then called the Land Development Plan, was published in 1964. It was updated December 2007, 43 years after the original. “The Comprehensive Plan is the guiding document that community leaders refer to when making decisions about zoning and other laws that guide how our town will develop in the future,” said Johnson. “The Land Development Ordinances are the rules.” The 13-member Steering Committee’s role is to review and discuss information, ideas, and recommendations prior to public presentation and assist with public outreach and engagement. They are charged with identifying issues and concerns of the town and residents, with developing a vision for the plan and setting new goals and objectives. The plan will prioritize key projects for implementation. The committee will give final recommendation to the plan prior to it advancing to the Planning Board and, then, the Town Council.

– except maybe from those living alongside the course. After all, quiet is what golf is about. Without grandstands everywhere, the players’ view of the course opens up. And it opens up for television viewers as well. TV viewers will have the opportunity to see parts of Sedgefield they never have before. J.T. Poston is expected to defend his 2019 title and Webb Simpson, who won his first tournament at Sedgefield in 2011, is also expected. Simpson is having his best season ever, having won the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February and the RBC Heritage on June 21. He has contended in the other tournaments he has participated in since the PGA resumed play June 11as a result of shutting down three months for the COVID-19 virus. Special precautions will be in place for golfers, caddies, media and support personnel this year. Tournament Director Mark Brazil keeps in contact with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as well as the PGA Tour to ensure a safe environment. The tournament will also follow state mandates. Facemasks and social distancing will be the norm. In 2019, the tournament was moved up two weeks to the first part of August and this year’s tournament was to have been played Aug. 6-9. However, due to the shortened and rescheduled season, the Wyndham Championship will essentially be played at its pre-2019 schedule, Aug. 13-16 This is the 81st year of the former Greater Greensboro Open, which now is known as the Wyndham Championship. As usual, it is the final regular-season tournament before the FedEx Cup Playoffs. This year, major tournaments like the U.S. Open and Masters have been rescheduled for September and November.

GTCC outlines fall semester plan

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Guilford Technical Community College has outlined its plan to serve students for the Fall 2020 semester. The college will offer instruction in a variety of formats – in-person and online – to best serve student needs and meet the requirements for social distancing and protective practices. Fall semester at GTCC begins August 17. “GTCC is taking a measured approach to reopening while ensuring the appropriate safeguards are in place to maximize the safety of our students, faculty, and staff,” said GTCC President Dr. Anthony J. Clarke. “Our students look to us to help them achieve their academic and career goals. We are here to serve our students and prepare them to enter critical jobs in our local economy.” For the fall term, GTCC will hold in-person instruction on campus with social distancing in place. The college will use primary and secondary classroom formats to maintain proper distancing for face-toface sessions. Hybrid and blended classes will also be offered to reduce the number of days and hours that students are required to be

on campus. Additionally, the college has increased its offering of 100% online courses to meet the needs of students who prefer remote learning. The college will continue to offer lab classes on campus for select programs. GTCC will utilize temperature checks and health screenings for labs where students cannot meet the required learning outcomes while maintaining social distancing requirements. Workforce and Continuing Education classes will be offered on campus and also follow social distancing guidelines. Following Thanksgiving break (November 26-27) the college will move all lecture instruction and final examinations online. Labs will continue on campus with appropriate social distancing and protective practices, e.g., temperature checks and health screenings. Workforce and Continuing Education classes will be moved online where feasible. Registration for Fall 2020 is underway. New and returning students can begin the registration process here. The deadline to register for classes is August 13. A complete

overview of GTCC’s Fall 2020 plan can be found at www.gtcc.edu/gtcc-builtfor/gtcc-built-for-timeslike-these.php. GTCC has adopted the latest guidance from state and local health authorities to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to its campuses. These protocols include wearing masks, practicing social distancing measures, encouraging hand washing, increasing the number of hand sanitizer stations, and cleaning of high-touch areas. A recent decision by the National Junior College Athletic Association has also impacted GTCC’s 2020-2021 volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The NJCAA has ordered closecontact fall sports to be moved to spring semester. The college is following this guidance.
