Bypass has been years in the planning By CarOL BrOOks FreeLaNCe Writer cab1hp@gmail.com There have certainly been a lot of orange traffic cones and barrels around Jamestown recently – handicap sidewalk ramp improvements, Harvey Road closing, Magnolia on Main townhomes, Black Powder Smokehouse, signal work at Oakdale and Main, West Main Street/Penny Road intersection and whatever configuration is currently at Jamestown Parkway and Guilford College Road. But the biggest impact on the town will undoubtedly be U2412A – the so-called Jamestown Bypass. The history of the bypass goes

back many years. An article in the Jamestown News dated Feb. 28, 1980, begins, “Although it’s a long way in the future, Jackson Street may become the route of the proposed bypass through Jamestown.” The article went on to say the North Carolina Department of Transportation had been looking at three alternate routes for the road, and Jackson Street “appeared to be the most desirable.” The street would be widened on the south side. Larry Goode, an NCDOT representative, added that the actual start of construction is “at least seven years away” and it would take another two years before it would be completed.

The Town of Jamestown had the option to pick which of the three routes it preferred but it is not clear if the Town actually picked, or if NCDOT determined the route. The actual route for the bypass is about one-half mile south of Jackson Street.

This route crosses Oakdale Road where Bull Run Village was once located, but wasn’t the first choice by NCDOT. A feasibility study done by NCDOT for the bypass, probably in 1988, recommended a four-lane route running south and east from Manor Drive on Greensboro Road in High Point across Deep River and Dillon, Oakdale and Harvey roads, then proceeding northeasterly across Vickery Chapel Road and reconnecting with High Point Road in Greensboro near the location of the old Sedgefield Flea Market, the currently the Villas at Sedgefield. That route is close to the current route with the exception of the starting point at Manor

Drive. The bypass work is now about one-half mile west of Manor, near where Greensboro Road intersects with I-74. A Nov. 30, 1988, article by Wesley Hyatt in the “News” suggests the bypass should connect with Groometown Road near I-85, diverting traffic away from Sedgefield, rather than the current path of connecting with Gate City Boulevard at Guilford College Road, with a new road removing traffic from Sedgefield’s entrances. The bypass was part of the Southwest Area plan, begun in 1987, which was designed to study and determine future needs, land see ByPass, page 2

Camp High Five fosters success By nOrma B. dennis FreeLaNCe Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com School is out and for many students that means an opportunity to attend camp. In fact, there are probably as many types of camps as there are weeks in the summer. Thirteen students, ranging in age from 5-11, recently completed Camp High Five at Haynes-Inman Education Center. The camp, which ran from June 17-21, did not feature lots of outdoor activities. It was, instead, a therapeutic camp for children with Hemiplegia, whose bodies are affected with muscle weakness on one side. “This is usually due to brain injury,” said camp director Ashley Collier. “Most of the kids are survivors of stokes in utero or delivery.”

Campers arrive in their pajamas at 9 a.m. and after getting dressed are required to wear a cast on their strong arm until the end of the camp day at 3 p.m. Bio-Tech donated the casts. They are custom made to each child for fit and comfort. “Wearing the cast forces the affected side to do more work,” Collier explained. “It results in creating new brain pathways to gain more function on their weaker side and leads to more independence. There is an increased personal awareness of parts of their body they may usually neglect.” Camp High Five is one of only 10 such camps in the United States. Another in Chapel Hill has been in operation for approximately 20 years. Collier’s daughter Macie attended the Hemiplegia camp in Chapel Hill

for three years from age 3-5. Collier invited a friend who is a therapist to volunteer there for one day and the two began to discuss ways to serve more children. The result was Camp High Five, which has met at HaynesInman for the past four years. Occupational or physical therapists refer most participants, and camp board members review applications. In addition to the age requirements, applicants much have independent toilet skills, be ambulatory without the use of walkers or wheelchairs and be able to follow simple directions. Collier noted that as director, most of her work is done before camp begins. She seeks grants and donations to help fund the camp so it is free to participants, registers campsee fOster, page 8

In 2017, an ordinance was changed in Jamestown to establish rules for chickens in residential areas. Now, some pigs want their own place. Lori Herron, of Guilford College Road, has requested the Town create a text amendment to Article 3, Definitions, of the Land Development Ordinance. The article currently defines “limited agriculture” as “the keeping of gardens and animals for non-commercial domestic use. Such agriculture generally refers to, but is not limited to, domestic fowl such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, bees, and other small animals (ex: rabbits). Limited agriculture does not permit livestock such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine or the like.” Herron claims her pot-bellied pigs are pets and therapy animals, not livestock. She wants to amend the text to read, “Limited agriculture does not permit livestock, animals used for food or fiber, such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine over 300 pounds, or the like, not to include miniature or potbellied pigs that are kept as and considered to be pets.” Herron’s request will go before the Jamestown Planning Board on July 8. The matter began when the town’s Planning Department received an anonymous phone call on Feb. 26 of this year complaining of “trash and odors” coming from Herron’s residence. Planning Director Matthew Johnson investigated and found a large pile of plumbing rubbish in the yard. When he attempted to go to the front door to speak with the owner, his access was blocked by a fence enclosing 10 pigs. Johnson called Herron to request a meeting, which was set up and then canceled. Johnson then sent a notice on Feb. 27 outlining several violations and requesting the rubbish be removed within 10 days and the pigs within 30 days. The plumbing trash was removed but Herron requested an additional 60

days to find a new home for the pigs, thus moving the date of compliance to May 27. Herron attended the Town Council meeting May 21 and asked to be allowed to keep the pigs on her property. She said she had been told in the past by the Town that the pigs were not a problem. They had become members of her family and she presented a letter from her doctor saying they were emotional support animals. The Council suggested she file a text amendment to the Land Development Ordinance with the Planning Department. This would not be a rezoning request. The pig story reached the notice of Fox8, which interviewed Herron on March 4 and told her story. The video showed the pigs entering her home. “I never intended to be like the crazy pig lady with 10 pigs, but you get your animals. You love your animals. I mean what are you supposed to do,” Herron said in the interview. “These are not guys that we’re trying to breed or sell. They are not animals that we are going to slaughter and eat.” The piece stated she has been rescuing pigs for 20 years. “We are not sure how long the pigs have been there.,” Johnson said. “However, once we are made aware of a zoning violation, we have a duty to remedy it. Looking back at previous ordinances, livestock were never permitted in residentially-zoned districts.” He is aware that Herron is using an online service to solicit support. “Our zoning ordinance considers swine as ‘livestock’ (per state statutes),” he said. “Our animal control ordinance (housed in our “General Code of Ordinances” and part of our police powers) has some language related to ‘domestic’ animals as it refers to our animal control ordinances. These are two separate issues. The violation here is a violation of the zoning ordinance.” see PiG, page 2

Benbow House Hotel

By Linda WiLLard JaMeStoWN FrieNdS MeetiNg

On March 28, 1870, Greensborough (old spelling), North Carolina officially became a city. At that time, Greensborough, North Carolina had 2,000 residents and one square mile of incorporated land. After the Civil War, Greensborough, North Carolina Quaker resident and businessman, Dr. DeWitt Clinton Benbow realized that the economic troubles that followed the Civil War had left Greensborough without a comfortable hotel for visiting wealthy northern businessmen. The former Southern Hotel and the Planter Hotel were either gone or no longer met the standards expected by the northern visitors. Benbow recognized the lack of a proper hotel and in 1871 began construction on the Benbow House Hotel located one block south

of Court House Square on South Street (present-day S. Elm Street). The hotel was built at a cost of $40,000. During the Reconstruction era, $40,000 was a huge sum of money. The Benbow House Hotel opened in late May 1871. A dedication speech was delivered by former New York Governor David Hill. Former North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance also delivered a speech and was the first to sign the register as a guest. When the hotel first opened, a visitor from New York was dismayed to learn that the hotel did not have rooms with a private bath.

Not to worry! Benbow quickly solved the problem with a quick visit to Odell Hardware on South Street where he purchased a tin bathtub for $2.50. Benbow returned to the hotel room with the bathtub where his guest had the honor of occupying the first Greensborough, North Carolina hotel room with a private bath. Sadly, at about noon on June 17, 1899, the Benbow House Hotel burned to the ground. The only thing left of the former magnificent hotel were the brick walls. Fortunately, there was no loss of life in the tragic fire.

The ruins of the once prominent hotel were purchased by B.H. Merrimon, his wife Nellie S. Merrimon, and E.P. Wharton. The Merrimons and Wharton paid $80,000 to construct a new hotel at the former location of the Benbow House Hotel. The new hotel was even more grand than the original Benbow House Hotel. The new hotel had Wilton carpets, marble floors, and rooms with a private bath! The hotel was renamed the Guilford Hotel. The Guilford Hotel was destroyed in 1930 and replaced with the F.W. Woolworth store.

DeWitt Clinton Benbow

DeWitt Clinton Benbow, the youngest of the five children of Quaker parents, Charles and Mary Saunders Benbow, was born February 23, 1832 in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. The Benbow family had been Quakers since the early 1700s. Benbow received his basic early education in the local Oak Ridge, North Carolina schools. Benbow next attended the Moses Brown Friends’ School in Providence, Rhode Island. He received his professional degree in dentistry from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1855. Benbow returned to North Carolina to practice dentistry in Fayetteville, North Carolina and became the youngest charter member of the North Carolina Dental Society. deWitt Clinton Benbow february 23, 1832 – september 2, 1902 newspapers and then travel to Wilmington, Raleigh, Greensboro, etc. to work. On November 30, 1857, Benbow married Mary Elizabeth Scott. Benbow’s wife died in 1896. They were the parents of four children, one son and three daughters. During his years as an itinerant dentist Benbow began to diversify and venture into business. Benbow bought and operated the Cross Creek Cotton Factory. Benbow had worked in the cotton factory as a boy. He also invested in valuable tracts of land, particularly large tracts of pine land around Fayetteville, North Carolina. In 1861, it became very uncomfortable for an ablebodied, young pacifist to live in Fayetteville, North Carolina while other young men were going off to war. Benbow hired a substitute to fight in his place. He sold both the dental practice and the cotton mill and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. After Benbow moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, he once again entered into the business world. He purchased property, built buildings, and engaged in merchandising. Benbow’s primary businesses were located on South Elm Street,

the main thoroughfare in Greensboro, North Carolina. Benbow realized that this was the junction of the North Carolina and Piedmont railroads and the perfect location for a hotel. The hotel was only partially completed when several newspaper editors from New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey visited Greensboro. This was a part of a long-planned visit to the upper South. The Benbow House Hotel formally opened on May 30, 1871. Former governor Zebulon Vance, made a speech to the northern newspaper editors and was the first person to sign the guest register. Benbow House Hotel was completed in 1872 at a cost of $40,000. The hotel was four stories with seventyfour rooms. There was a dairy, vegetable garden, and a vineyard adjunct to the hotel. One unique feature of the Benbow House Hotel was that it did not have a bar. Benbow did not use alcohol or tobacco. Benbow was a very successful businessman for the next twenty years. In the mid-1870s, as an alderman, he campaigned for graded schools for both white and African-American students. During the struggle to establish Bennett College for young African-American women, Benbow was generous with both his money and his leadership ability. Benbow also rescued Greensboro Female College (present-day Greensboro College). Fire had gutted the main building, the work superintendent died in a fall, and a bank failure deprived the college of most of its funds. Benbow immediately took charge of the work

and paid all wages and bills related to the reconstruction of the building. At one time, what is now North Carolina State University, was an annex to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Due to assistance from Benbow and Charles H. Moore, the university was able to move to Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1879, Benbow called for the establishment of a school to train young women as teachers in the public schools. In 1891, after a twelve-year crusade led by Benbow and others the Normal and Industrial School for White Girls was established. Benbow served as a trustee of New Garden Boarding School (present-day Guilford College) from 1881 to 1891. In 1891, Benbow was present at the establishment of the Greensboro Monthly Meeting of Friends. By 1892, Benbow ‘s worth was estimated to be about a half a million dollars. In addition to his other businesses, Benbow invested in the North State Improvement Company which undertook to build the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad. Unfortunately, the company was ruined by the financial panic of that time. The principal men decided to endorse notes individually. This decision proved to be their undoing. Benbow would spend the next ten years defending himself against various lawsuits. Most of the lawsuits were eventually compromised, however this took a toll on his health. Benbow died on September 2, 1902 and is buried in the Greenhill Cemetery in Greensboro, North Carolina

CoNtiNUed FroM FroNt Johnson said Herron’s request would allow an unlimited number of pigs to be kept on a residentiallyzoned property and recommends the Planning Board and, later, the Town Council deny the text amendment. He does, however, request that the Town Council direct him “to research and suggest an ordinance update which would better define the requirements for keeping ‘miniature’ or ‘pot-bellied’ pigs in residentially zoned areas, as well as guidelines for limitations on the keeping of other animals (cats, dogs, exotic pets, etc.), including numbers and conditions for each.” Also on the Planning Board’s agenda is a discussion of an update to the Comprehensive Plan and the request for qualifications of firms or teams of consultants to lead the update as well as the appointment of a Comprehensive Plan Update Steering Committee. “The Comprehensive Plan will become the primary policy guide for future land use development, capital investments and growth management decisions over the next decade and beyond,” Johnson said.

The consultants will help the Town identify strategies and actions “to support economic diversification, growth management and creating an even greater sense of place.” The current Comprehensive Plan was developed in 2010 and the 2020 Land Development Plan in 2007. The 2007 Parks & Recreation Master Plan is currently being updated but it, along with the LDP, 2008 Downtown Market Assessment, 2008 Land Development Ordinance, 2010 Deep River Train Plan and 1996 Urban Design Assistance Team (UDAT) Plan, will be updated and consolidated into a master policy document. “Many of the goals articulated in previous planning initiatives have been achieved,” Johnson said, “but there has been inadequate progress in several key areas.” He pointed to historic preservation and several properties in town that have been neglected by absentee landowners. The Planning Board will meet July 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.

use, transportation and other services in southwest Guilford County. Of all the areas under study, Betty Holt, then of the Guilford County Planning Department, said the Jamestown bypass was the one item that did not have favorable support. “They are just not in favor of it,” Holt said in a Jamestown News article dated April 19, 1989. She said residents wanted three or four other bypass alternatives. Scott Elliot, also of the Guilford County Planning Department, said, “any sort of bypass will not come about for at least two years.” In 1990, the “News” reported that the environmental study was delayed. One reason cited questions in a 1989 public hearing challenging the number of vehicles per day on Greensboro-High Point Road on the DOT’s feasibility study. These numbers were later found to be too high. Another delay was caused by a new state requirement passed in 1989 calling for more stringent guidelines regarding how to do studies on historic and archeological sites. A historian was hired to re-examine historic structures in southwest Guilford county. In 2000, the News and Record reported on plans to widen Main Street to handle the growing volume of traffic. Three alternative bypass routes were also presented but none involved widening Main Street. “This option would have endangered the following seven individually historic properties in the Jamestown Historic District: the George T. Penny House, Potter House, Mill and Millers House, Jamestown Public School (Library), Shubal Coffin House, Standard Oil Station and Ragsdale Farm.” These properties were protected under Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966 to protect public parks, recreation areas, wildlife and waterfowl refuges, and historic sites from being impacted by DOT projects unless there is no feasible alternative. The widening option went away when Mrs. William Ragsdale pointed out that the Jamestown Historic District was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Districts on Jan. 22, 1973, literally protecting Main Street from major alteration. The National Historic Preservation Act, of which the National Register is a part, came into being because, following World War II, urban renewal became the buzzwords and many buildings, blocks, neighborhoods and business districts were destroyed in the name of “progress.”

Barry Ward and tom Vaughan-Lawlor in "maze" quency trading. It’s complicated, but they are very passionate about it, and so is their ex-boss, a cutthroat woman named Eva Torres (Salma Hayek) who plots to thwart and beat them at their own game — at any price. It comes from director/writer Kim Nguyen, and is as much dark dramedy as social commentary on greed.

Maze (NR) — Irish Republican Army prisoner Larry Marley (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) is indefatigable in pursuit of freedom, even in a highsecurity breakout-proof prison such as the HMP Maze. For this challenge, all resources must be pursued, including fellow prisoners with a diverse array of talents and even,

or most especially, the guards themselves. Marley establishes a rapport and eventual friendship with a warden, Gordon Close (Barry Ward), that leads to the largest prison escape in Europe since World War II. It’s based on the real-life 1983 mass breakout at the prison. Although it’s about a prison break, it’s not an action movie. It’s a psychological drama, slowly building and unfolding, that is well worth watching. The Aftermath (R) — Keira Knightly and Jason Clark are Rachael and Col. Lewis Morgan, an English couple brought to Germany post-World War II during rebuilding. They take over the house of German

architect Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgard), but instead of sending him and his daughter off, Col. Morgan allows them to stay. With so many lives lost, it’s inevitable that grief catches up. Given time and access, Rachel and Stefan have an affair. It’s terribly cliched, but of course, beautifully done. If you’re into gloomy period romances, this is your cup of tea. The madcap caution of Donald Trump By riCH LOWry The worry was that the Trump administration was ginning up fake intelligence about Iran blowing up oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz to justify a war against Iran. Then the next week President Donald Trump said the Iranian attacks weren’t a big deal. The episode is another indication of the underlying modesty — not a very Trumpian word — of the administration. Subtract Trump’s taste for nonstop controversy and rhetorical brinkmanship, and you’re left with an incrementalist center-right government that has pursued an expansionary fiscal policy and avoided foreign war, for a period of peace and prosperity that — in any other universe — would be at the core of a stay-the-course re-election message. For a while, the Obama doctrine was, “Don’t do stupid stuff.” The Trump team has built out the doctrine to “Privately consider and sometimes openly threaten stupid stuff, but at the end of the day, don’t do it (usually).” The Mexico tariff threat was typical. If Trump had gone through with the steadily escalating tariffs, it would have been a blow to our own economy and that of an ally. Instead, he got what might prove to be meaningful concessions from Mexico. The thing about a Trump threat is that he always controls whether he’s going to go through with it or not. He’s going to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement, actually no, he’s not. He’s going to impose auto tariffs on Canada, well, not really. What he’s going to do is sign a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada that’s a somewhat altered version of NAFTA and urge Congress to pass it. Allies might be understandably appalled

(or at times alarmed) by his habit of berating them and squeezing them for concessions, but the alliance system, a product of deeper forces than the persona of any one president, remains intact. In the Middle East, Trump accelerated an anti-ISIS campaign that he inherited, announced a withdrawal from Syria that he didn’t fully follow through on and kept troops in Afghanistan. Steady as she goes. Pulling out of the Iran nuclear accord is a big deal and, given that it’s not entirely clear how the administration imagines resolving the crisis, genuinely a shot in the dark (although Trump says he wants to talk). Another gamble is the trade war with China, a truly significant departure from the old bipartisan consensus, yet even here, Trump presumably has the off-ramp of a fig-leaf deal should he decide that he wants to take it. At home, in terms of the economy, everything (except for the tariffs) has been geared to preserving and boosting the recovery, from the tax cuts, to the deregulation, to the lack of interest in cutting spending, to Trump’s jawboning of the Federal Reserve to keep rates low. Given the choice, you’d prefer that people believed that your administration was cautious and incremental, while it undertook far-reaching changes, rather than believe it’s on the verge of careening out of control, while pursuing a fairly reasonable path. For now, he can plausibly make a reelection pitch that, despite what you might have gathered, he’s been a steward of a country enjoying markedly good times. Yes, cats can learn how to do tricks By sam maZZOtta paW’S CorNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can a cat learn how to do tricks, the way a dog does? — Will N., via email DEAR WILL: Cats can be trained to do quite a few things! They respond differently than dogs to training methods though, so you might be a little frustrated if you try to teach a cat to sit down in the same way that you would a dog. Cats respond best to positive-reinforcement methods of training. Giving a cat a treat when they obey a command is one example of this type of positive reinforcement. Start by teaching your cat a simple command, like “sit.” Work with him in 5- to 10-minute sessions a couple of times each day. Place your cat on a perch, like a table, and give him a

friendly scratch. When he stands up, call his name while holding a favorite treat at eye level. Raise the treat directly over his head, where he can still see it. Your cat will need to sit down to maintain balance while looking at the treat — when he sits, you say, “Sit! Good, sit!” Give him the treat. Repeat this training session until your cat sits when you simply hold your empty hand over his head and say “Sit.” Trainers have routinely taught cats to do more complex things — even using a regular toilet bowl instead of a litter box! You can find books on effective cat training online or at your local bookstore, so grab one and see what you can teach your cat. ‘You’re my best friend:’

The good boys and girls of the Guilford County Animal Shelter katie murawski yes! Weekly editor katie@yesweekly.com

*Editors note: This story was published in YES! Weekly June 12, 2019. “I am having an emotional day,” said Guilford County Animal Shelter volunteer Allison Dunmore as she started tearing up. “They come to us, with broken souls. They start loving, they start learning, they start thriving. To be able to thrive in this atmosphere is a real challenge.” “But like Diamond here, she came to us, and she was so scared of everyone and everything. She is one of our over-bred, under-fed and unloved babies,” Dunmore added as she called for Diamond to come closer. Dunmore has been a volunteer with the Guilford County Animal Shelter for eight years, and she primarily works with the dogs. Dunmore’s shift is three days a week for two hours each time, but sometimes, two hours turns into four. Her duties include working one-on-one with the dogs for obedience training, and “whatever the dog wants to do.” For instance, “Diamond likes to go on a little sniff walk; the dog I had out earlier just thought that there was nothing in the world like playing fetch, so we played for a while,” she said. “Whatever they find enriching and whatever keeps them going, I like to do with them.” Dunmore said before she started volunteering, she went through a lot of hardship and was trying to figure out what to do with her life next. In the meantime, she decided to start spending time with the dogs, which turned into eight years. “I am just finishing up my degree in canine behavior, so yes, it was beneficial,” she said. “When I was looking for what to do next, they kind of led me down this path. I went from an exceptional children teacher to an exceptional doggie teacher.” Dunmore said with dogs, what you see is what you get. “There is an honesty to them; there is a forgiveness to them,” she said. “Humans couldn’t have nearly the compassion as these animals — the amount of forgiveness. For thousands of years, they have been our companions. And that is all a dog

wants to do more than anything else in the world, have a human to love.” Just as Dunmore was finishing her sentence, Diamond plopped on the ground and rolled over, begging to have her tummy rubbed. “That’s it, that is Miss Diamond,” she said with a giggle and stopped rubbing the dog’s belly. Diamond looked up, almost demanding with sweet, wide eyes that Dunmore continue to give her tummy rubs. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to stop scratching your belly,” Dunmore said. “Can’t you tell this is a fearful dog?” Dunmore joked as we both laughed and shared an “aww-moment.” Guilford County Animal Shelter’s community engagement manager Lisa Lee brings the animals in the shelter to the community by managing GCAS’s social media accounts (an Instagram account is coming soon), planning outreach events such as mobile adoptions (the next one coming up is in July at Friendly Center’s Whole Foods), and partnering with local colleges and universities such as Guilford College’s new Roar Club. Lee said that the municipal government funds and runs the animal shelter. “We took over the shelter about three years ago from a nonprofit organization,” Lee said. “It was animal control that would pick up dogs in a field and drop them off and leave, and the nonprofit would do the adoption.” When the county took over the adoption side, she said it had become collectively known as animal services. Lee said usually the GCAS averages 320 animals altogether. According to the GCAS report for 2018, from the years 2016 to 2017, total animal intake decreased by about 1,500, and from 2017 to 2018, the intake rate dropped by about 3,000. The rate of owner-surrenders also dropped from 3,516 in 2016, to 2,553 in 2017, and fell again to 1,118 in 2018. Lee attributed this drop to the shelter’s managed intake system, which requires owner-surrenders to make an appointment before dropping off their animal. “Before, when I started here, there was a line out the door of perfectly healthy animals, and people just standing in the sun because they were moving or the landlord wouldn’t take them, or the dog chewed a hole in the rug,

Rabbit and we had absolutely zero space,” Lee said. “Yeah, it might be two to three weeks out for an appointment, but it gives us time to provide those owners with resources. Maybe they can’t keep their dog because they need pet food? Maybe they can’t keep their cat because she keeps having kittens? We can take care of that; we can help get their cats spayed/neutered. We are starting now to provide the community with different resources to keep pet retention at home and not in the shelter.” Lee said she has always been an animal lover. She originally came from a law enforcement background. She took a break from that field and started working as an animal control officer and investigator in Fort Myers, Florida. “I went there and did an interview with a pit bull on my lap in my dress,” she said. Lee became an animal cruelty officer, a field training officer and then moved to Greensboro to start her position at GCAS. “From where we were then to where we are now, it is like a complete 180 improvement,” she said. “It is really exciting; we have a lot of good stuff going on.” Kristen Wheeley is a 22-year-old employee of GCAS. Her duties include cleaning the dogs’ kennels, spending time with the dogs, feeding the dogs, and helping potential adopters find their new best friend. Wheeley said she always loved working with animals since she was young, and she wanted to be a veterinarian. But the medical side of the job discouraged her. Instead,

If the trustee is unable to convey title to this property for any reason, the sole remedy of the purchaser is the return of the deposit. Reasons of such inability to convey include, but are not limited to, the filing of a bankruptcy petition prior to the confirmation of the sale and reinstatement of the loan without the knowledge of the trustee. If the validity of the sale is challenged by any party, the trustee, in their sole discretion, if they believe the challenge to have merit, may request the court to declare the sale to be void and return the deposit. The purchaser will have no further remedy. Additional Notice for Residential Property with Less than 15 rental units, including Single-Family Residential Real Property

she went to Alamance Community College and got an associate’s degree in animal care and management. She worked at a private shelter in Mebane called, Paws Forever before she started in Guilford County. Wheeley said the difference between public shelters and private shelters is that the public shelters, “have to take in every animal that comes to them. The private shelters don’t, so they all have different rules and standards of what they take in. Some places are breedspecific.” Lee said that most of the dogs that are at the shelter are mixed “bully breeds.” “We don’t like using the word pit bull,” Lee said. “It is a bad connotation. People think ‘oh it is a pit bull, it is aggressive.’ So, bully breeds can be anything.” Both Wheeley and Lee agreed that the biggest misconceptions that the public has of GCAS is that the shelter euthanizes animals immediately after they are surrendered. “That is the big thing, that we kill everything,” Lee said. “It is obviously not the truth.” “That is not true, at all, there is a whole process for it,” Wheeley said. “They go into intake to make sure they have all of their shots, perform assessments to make sure they are safe, and behaviorally OK. When I did work at the private shelter, a lot of people would call and say, ‘oh will you please take my pet I don’t want them to get put down,’ and most shelters don’t do that anymore.” “We do euthanize, but we

Tigger don’t euthanize for space,” Lee clarified. “We have an 81% live outcome rate, and if we were another 9%, we would be considered a nokill shelter.” Lee said the choice to euthanize is a tough decision for everyone involved, and it has to meet specific parameters in terms of “behavioral, bite level, aggression, and medically untreatable” factors. Wheeley walked me through the process of adoption: First, potential adopters come in and look around at the dogs they are interested in. Then, they can ask a volunteer or employee to take a dog out a spend about 10 minutes with them, just to get the feel of their personality. If the person wants to adopt, they fill out an application. “We can hold dogs for up to an hour if someone

needs to leave for some reason and come back,” Wheeley said. “If they are not already spayed or neutered, they have to be spayed or neutered before they go home. We give you all their records, paperwork and resources (such as potty training, or dog-to-dog training resources) and a small bag of food.” The fee for adoption is $50 for adult dogs, $25 for seniors (8 years and up) and $75 for puppies (7 months and under). Meet some of the good boys and girls Mozart is a super cute 7-year-old bully breed, who is heartworm-positive. Lee said he qualifies as a foster-to-adopt candidate for heartworm treatment. Lee said that Mozart was owner-surrendered in the field, see friend, page 8

CoNtiNUed FroM page 7 and the owner thinks he is hearing impaired. Mozart is treat-motivated and knows basic commands. “I really like him, I just think he is so adorable, he’s just like tilting his head,” Wheeley said. “He is short, so I think that is really cute.” Diamond, who was mentioned above, is a sweet 3-year-old bully breed, who was brought into the shelter as a stray from High Point, Lee said. Diamond is a gentle girl who is also heartworm-positive and qualifies for heartworm treatment as a foster-to-adopt candidate. “She was so afraid when she first came in,” Dunmore said. “We had to work with her for a while because she had no history of trusting humans; her nature was not to be afraid of humans it was her nurture that took her there.” After getting acclimated to shelter life, Dunmore said Diamond is a sweet and easy-going girl who, obviously, loves tummy rubs. Rabbit is a 10-year-old female, who was ownersurrendered and has been at the shelter for a while. Lee said Rabbit is listed as a Dalmatian-mix who loves adults and children. Rabbit loves to go on rides and “has done great when taken to adoption events,” Lee said. “She is an older gal, she is 10,” Wheeley said. “But she is super sweet, and I just think she is cute because she does a little happy dance all of the time.” Tigger is a 6-year-old Mastiff male who was surrendered to the shelter in April because his owner passed away, Lee said. He is a large, strong boy that is also heartworm-positive. Lee said Tigger is a gentlegiant that loves attention but needs someone strong who can handle his size. “He is a

big guy, and he loves tennis balls, and he goes absolutely nuts for them,” Wheeley said. “We keep them outside, and he will try to knock them over to grab like five in his mouth.” The Have-A-Heart Fund is a fund for heartworm-positive animals at the shelter that incentivizes potential owners to “foster-to-adopt,” and in return, GCAS pays for their expensive treatment. “If you wanted to adopt Diamond, you would be her foster mom first while she goes through treatment with one of our veterinary partners, which is a series of three injections,” Lee said. “Once they have the treatment, they need bed rest, and after the last treatment, fosters are provided with resources, and then the adoption is complete. It is kind of like giving a dog a second chance.” Jessica Mashburn, a volunteer for GCAS and an animal activist, attributes the homeless pet population to irresponsible citizens in the community. “It will truly ‘take a village’ to get them home and to educate about the importance of spay/neuter,” she wrote in a Facebook message. “The shelter is funded by county property taxes, and unfortunately, those that pay the most in property taxes do not visit or adopt from the shelter often. I know in my heart if folks in our county simply visited the shelter, even if they cannot adopt, they would want to either volunteer, foster or would demand that our shelter be funded better.” Mashburn encourages those who have the time, to pick some cats and dogs to campaign for and help them get a home by telling their friends, neighbors and

coworkers all about them. (On Mashburn’s Facebook page, she can be seen taking her own advice quite often.) “Everyone needs an agent, right? See not, want not,” she continued. “These animals are members of our community, too, and we should all care about them. Keeping them out of sight and mind only perpetuates the problem. They deserve love; everything is connected. Seeing a homeless animal find a loving, forever home is such a beautiful feeling. As someone that does not have children, it’s been the greatest expression of my maternal instinct to find homes for shelter pets.” Volunteering is always welcomed at GCAS, and choosing to “adopt not shop” is highly encouraged. Volunteering could be just spending quality time with the animals to socialize them; or helping GCAS employees clean the facilities; it could also be holding fundraisers for food, litter and other essentials for the shelter; or making a monetary donation. “By adopting a rescue dog, you save two dogs,” Lee said. “One that you are rescuing is making space for another animal at the shelter.” Wheeley encourages people to do research first when they are looking for a new best friend. “If you do want a certain breed, see if there are rescues that do those breeds and look it up online. Go into the shelters, spend time in the shelters. Ask a lot of questions, they are there to help you,” she said. “All shelters will have resources for you. We work here, and we know the dogs, so if you are looking for a calmer dog or energetic dog, we will be able to match you with that fit.”

do this every day. You will never find a group of people that loves these animals than the people that come here and do this day after day. They are the absolute heroes.” Dunmore said a pet is a lifetime commitment, “so think long and hard before you get a pet and make sure you get that pet for the rest of its life. Spay and neuter it; we have way too many now that need homes, we don’t need anymore.” “Every animal here needs a second chance,” Lee said. “I know we just have bully breeds, but these bully breeds are loving animals. All of our animals are fully vetted and microchipped. I mean where else can you get a fully vetted, microchipped animal for a $50 adoption fee?” Looking to the future, Lee said GCAS is planning to expand to a new shelter,

located on Guilford College Road. “We are working toward our new animal shelter, that is supposed to hopefully be done in the next couple of years,” Lee said. “It is going to be a brand new bright and shiny building. We are hoping to break ground before the year is over.” Lee hopes the new shelter will be a destination for people, one that they visit after church on Sundays or on a lazy Saturday afternoon. For more information, visit the GCAS website and social media pages (Facebook). Who knows, you might find your new best friend there.

As an eight-year volunteer, Dunmore said one must “have a big heart, and be able to say goodbye because there are a lot of goodbyes,” she explained. “And that is OK, because for every goodbye, there is a new hello. If you don’t know patience, you will learn patience. This is one of the best things you can do if you want to learn to be more zen in your life. If you want to learn mindfulness, volunteer with these dogs.” Dunmore encourages potential adopters to open their minds and not be deceived by outward appearances. “Whatever you can do, please, please do to help these animals,” she said. “So much has been said against the shelter and all, but you will never find a more caring and compassionate group than the people that come in here and

We could not do it without them.” Each camper has one occupational and one physical therapist with them for the entire day. Some therapists use vacation time to volunteer at the camp. Many volunteers are grad students, with physical therapists coming from High Point and occupational therapists from Winston-Salem State universities. “The grad students get experience working with this kind of therapy,” Collier said. “The campers are excited to be here even though it is very hard work. For some it is the first time they have seen other children like themselves. It is a win-win situation.”

macie Collier shows her cast as she prepares to strengthen her weaker arm and hand. At the end of camp, family and friends are invited to a small performance by the campers and an ice cream social. There is time for therapists to talk to parents about the progress of their children and how they can continue to help at home. Collier would like to see the camp increase to at least 20 participants, pro-

vided there could be supervision in the correct ratio. Although this is the last year her daughter can attend as a camper, Collier plans to continue working with the camp. “The need for these children does not end when Macie graduates,” Collier said. “This is a long term commitment for me.”
