Golf returns to Sedgefield this week By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The 2019 Wyndham Championship first round tees off Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club and some major players are scheduled to play. Jordan Spieth returns for only his second Wyndham visit, the first being as a 20-year-old rookie in 2013 when he lost in a two-hole playoff to Patrick Reed. Spieth went on to win three majors and was the 2015 FedEx Cup champion. Spieth is no stranger to the Sedge-

field course, having played the AJGA Wyndham Invitational in 2008 and 2009 during his junior golf career. “Having a three-time Major winner in Jordan Spieth in the Wyndham Championship field is a big deal,” tournament director Mark Brazil said. “We’re looking forward to having

Jordan back at Sedgefield for the first time since he was in the playoff in 2013. He’s had a lot of success at Sedgefield, and I know our fans will be excited to see him play the Wyndham. In his two AJGA events, he finished fourth and sixth, and he finished second in his only PGA TOUR event here so Jordan definitely knows his way around Sedgefield. For me, this is a big one. “Our field has a little bit of everything. We have nine guys who are see golf, page 3

Baseball athlete changes direction to continue play By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com “Don’t change horses in the middle of the stream,” sounds like good advice. But although hard to do, it could become a necessity. That is what happened to Isaiah Hairston. The Southwest Guilford High School senior had signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Winston-Salem State University with a full athletic scholarship, only to learn in mid March that the school had dropped its baseball program. Hairston was left to find another “horse” to guide his college career. Submitted Photos He immediately began to Isaiah Hairston is pictured in his Colt uniform, left. Body in lake deemed suicide By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Occasionally police cars can be seen gathered around the bridge over Arnold J. Koonce City Lake as divers practice rescue and recover. But on July 17, motorists along East Fork Road and golfers at the 14th green at Jamestown Park Golf Course might have been surprised to see so many High Point Police and Fire Department vehicles swarming that location. The reason was the body of a woman reported in the water of the lake. Around 5:30 p.m., responders arrived at the scene and found the body near the bridge. A week later, police announced they determined the cause of death was a suicide. The name of the victim has not been released. This is the area of East Fork Road that the Town of Jamestown is planning to put a pedestrian bridge in the near future.

Funding, historic properties and Park and golf course route part of numerous bypass delays showing a profit Part 4 of 4 By January 2004, discussion about a proposed Jamestown Bypass had been heard for around 30 years. A presentation was held in late fall 1988 and a draft Environmental Impact Statement had been prepared in the late-1980s/early-1990s and published May 1992. But no bulldozers were in sight. The project regained some momentum around 1994, but nothing came to fruition. But in the fall of 2003, NCDOT moved forward

with a timetable for right-of-way acquisitions and construction. The first right-of-way acquisitions would begin in 2005 with the first phase of construction slated to begin 2007. However, in early December 2003, representatives opposing the bypass met with DOT officials and Board of Transportation Chairman Doug Galyon. “It is our understanding that the DOT will be reassessing everything based on what we gave them,” said Steve Auman, one resident against the project. The Jamestown News reported in February 2006, “Purchase of rightsof-way is expected to begin in 2007 and construction to start in 2009.”

It was reported that NCDOT set aside $10,000,000 for right-of-way purchases. In 2000, John Frezell, who was then the Jamestown Town Manager, said the Jamestown Bypass would not displace any homeowners. That obviously was not the case, as an entire development, Bull Run Village, right in the center of the bypass at Oakdale Road, was obliterated, as well as homes on and near Harvey Road. (A piece by a local television station in 2017 estimated more than 100 homes and businesses were in the path.) Later in 2000, the paper reportsee bypass, page 3

Almost a perfect Quaker BY LINDA WILLARD JameStowN frieNdS meetiNg Ernest “Ernie” Shore, he second son of Quaker parents, Henry Shore and his wife Martha Shore, was born April 24, 1891 on a farm in rural Yadkin County, North Carolina. Shore would sometimes play outfield for a local baseball team called the Red Strings. In 1910, Shore enrolled in the preparatory department of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Guilford College was the only Quaker college south of Philadelphia. Shore hoped to become a civil engineer. He taught mathematics at Guilford College during the off-season. Shore pitched on the Guilford College baseball

team for five seasons. This included two years after he turned pro. In 1912, the New York Times wrote that the Giants had acquired “the thinnest pitcher in captivity.” “He reported yesterday from Guilford College, North Carolina. His front elevation is 6 feet 3 inches, and he looks as if he weighed 110 pounds.” Shore actually was just over 6 feet 4 inches and weighed almost 180 pounds. Shore was used almost

ernest grady "ernie" Shore March 24, 1891 — September 24, 1980 exclusively to pitch batting practice. On June 20, Shore was sent in to relieve George Wiltse in the ninth inning of a 21-2 blowout at Boston. It was reported that Shore got an unmerciful pounding. This was the only inning Shore ever pitched for the

Giants. McGraw ordered him down to Indianapolis, Indiana in September. Shore protested saying that this was an attempt to deprive him of the rights to the World Series. Shore refused to go to Indiana, Indiana, McGraw suspended him. Shore returned to East Bend, lost his share of the World Series money, and by his own account, felt rather sour at baseball on all accounts. The following January, Shore paid a $25 fine in order to be reinstated by the National Commission. In 1913, Shore played in Greensboro, North Carolina with the North Carolina State League. Shore’s most famous game occurred on June 23, 1917 against the Washington Senators. This was a double header at Fenway

The Freedman's Friend

Yardley Warner was born in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania on November 2, 1815. His parents were William and Letitia Field Warner, both of whom could trace their Quaker ancestors back many generations. The Warner family was active in the Underground Railroad assisting fugitive slaves to freedom. Warner stated that as a child he and his brothers were often sent to drive his father’s team with a load of hay, under which was hidden one or more fugitive slaves. Warner’s father died when Warner was about thirteen years old. His mother somehow managed to scraped together enough money to send him to Westtown Boarding School. Warner briefly taught elementary school in order to earn money to complete his education. Warner read law with John Cadwallader, a prominent Philadelphia lawyer. Warner practiced law briefly before deciding that he preferred to teach. In 1838, Warner returned to Westtown as a teacher. He stayed until 1841 when he opened a private boarding school for Quaker girls. In 1842, he married Hannah Allen who died in 1852. In 1863, following the Emancipation Proclamation, Friends realized that there was an urgent need for assisting the newly freed slaves.

Yardley Warner November 2, 1815 – January 4, 1885 The Friends Freeman’s Association raised money to establish schools for the former slaves. They soon realized that there was a great need for African-American teachers. They began establishing Normal Schools in North Carolina and other southern states. Warner spent years traveling to assist in opening these schools and visiting the ones already in operation. In 1865, Warner left Philadelphia and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where he purchased 35.5 acres of land in the southwest part of the city. Warner sold small lots to the

free blacks for a low cost. He also built a schoolhouse, organized the Warner Day School for black children, and taught crafts and agriculture to the adults. Warner also lived in the community he had started. For this he was severely criticized by the white community. The community was named Warnerville in his honor. In 1972, descendants of the early settlers of Warnerville erected a monument in honor of Yardley Warner. With this phase of his work complete, he moved to Wales where he spent several years as superintendent of Pales Monthly Meeting School. While living in Wales, Warner married Anne Elizabeth Horne, matron of the Hospital for Children in London. Warner and his second wife would become the parents of three sons. In 1881, the Warner family returned to the United States where he conducted a Freedman’s School in Jonesboro, Tennessee. In 1833, the family moved their membership to Springfield Friends Meeting in High Point, North Carolina. The Warner family lived in Bush Hill, North Carolina (present-day Archdale) where Warner taught in the Little Davie School, a private school for African-American children. Warner died from typhoid fever on January 4, 1885 and is buried in the Springfield Friends Cemetery.

Ruth was removed from the game; Ruth became even more enraged and hit the umpire a glancing blow. Ruth was removed from the field. The catcher, was also removed from the game. Shore was brought in to pitch. The runner, Ray Morgan tried to steal but was thrown out. Shore then proceeded to retire the remaining twenty-six Senator’s players without allowing a baserunner. This earned the Red Sox a 4-0 win. For several years this game was listed in record books as a “perfect game.” Officially it is a no-hitter. Shore was sold to the

Bartlett Yancy Clark

Bartlett Yancy Clark, the son of John Granville Clark and Elizabeth Jessop Clark, was born in Guilford County, North Carolina in 1831. In 1855, Clark married Phebe Elizabeth Stephenson Clark. Clark and his wife would become the parents of five children, two sons and three daughters. Bartlett Yancy Clark The Civil War was a 1831 — 1913 difficult time for Clark. As a Quaker, Clark was opposed to fighting. Clark’s brothers Christopher or Cristerfer and John, apparently did not share his conscientious objector beliefs. Both brothers had probably enlisted in the confederate army as early as May 23, 1861. Clark was conscripted into service in Company H (Stanley Marksmen) Fourteenth Regiment North Carolina Troops on October 1, 1863. Clark deserted a few days later. On October 30, 1863, Clark was arrested on October 20, 1863. He was courtmartialed on or about January 8, 1864. Clark was then confined to the prison in Salisbury, North Carolina. Clark served out his sentence as an orderly in the prison hospital. He was known as a man who showed great compassion to his guards and prisoners, both Confederate and Union. After the war, Clark returned to his farm in the Deep River township in Guilford County, North Carolina. The 1880 census lists his occupation as a wagon maker although he was living on the family farm. Clark died in 1913 at the age of 81 or 82. He is buried along with other family members in the Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina.

From The Front baseball continued from front leges and his high school coach helped the skilled baseball player reach out to college coaches in hopes of finding a new direction for his athletic and academic skills. “The day after I found out about Winston-Salem State dropping baseball, I killed at a game against our rival Ragsdale and I began to get offers from other colleges,” Hairston said. “He had to hurry up and do something, because by that time most college teams are set,” said his mother, Angela Penny. “By the grace of God Guilford College offered him some academic funding.” Hairston, the son of Angela and Brad Penny and Walter Hairston, accepted the offer and is now identified with Guilford’s mascot, the Quaker Man. “Attending Guilford College allows me to play baseball and the school also has a good academic program,” Hairston said. “I plan to major in sports science.” Another boost to Hairston’s academic career was obtaining a Bill White

Scholarship. He was one of 15 baseball athletes presented scholarships July 24 between opening night games of the Colt East Zone Tournament at Stoner White Stadium (Jaycee Park). The scholarships are awarded to former Colt Leaguers who are entering a college or university. Criteria include academic excellence, exemplary citizenship and financial need. The Bill White Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 following White’s death from cancer. In 1965, White started Colt Baseball locally for 15-16 year-olds. Bobby Dawson was the first recipient in 1981, and since then (including 2019) 266 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $230,000. The amounts range from $500 to $2,000. Hairston not only played on the Colt League, but has participated in baseball since he was 3 years old, starting on a tee-ball team. He played baseball in middle school and throughout high school. A lefty, he has played first base, pitcher and outfielder.

continued from front “I also played travel ball, Legion Ball and for two summers participated in the Pony/Colt League, Hairston said. “Baseball has been such a big thing all my life.” When Hairston was younger, he played soccer and Upwards basketball, but it was baseball that kept his interest. “He’s good at it,” Penny said. “We could see that sport as a possible way to help with college.” Hairston has been told he has the potential to play pro ball and would not discount the idea. “Right now it is about having fun and playing a game I am good at,” he said. According to Hairston, the game also offers lots of life lessons including listening to adults or getting benched, interacting with teammates, discipline and the ability to shake off a bad game or play. “After all, it’s a game,” he said. The game, however, is allowing Hairston to strive for higher goals, both athletically and academically.

bypass

continued from front ed, “Talk of the new road around Jamestown has been going on for years and heated up in the early 1990s but stalled because of disagreements between area municipalities.” Interest picked up again a couple of years ago with plans to begin right-of-way purchases in 2005 and construction in 2008. However, in 2006, the schedule called for construction to begin in 2010, but the Jamestown News reported that date could change to 2011. The decision was finalized Dec. 30, 2006, by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to construct the bypass. A start date was not given. Past editions of the Jamestown News indicate that by 2008, construction had been delayed three times due to historic properties concerns, environmental issues and lack of funding. A 2009 article said work was suspended until 2013 due to lack of funding and that right-ofway acquisitions would not be scheduled until after 2013. Jamestown Mayor Keith Volz told an area newspaper on Sept. 22, 2013, “The current thinking of town leaders is that we’re sort of happy that the money for this is still very scarce. If it’s going to be inevitable, we might as well push it out as far as we can.” The article goes on to state that funding for the bypass had not been scheduled and wouldn’t take place “until the next decade,” according to Mike Mills, division engineer for

the NCDOT. “Under current state transportation plans, funding wouldn’t be in place any earlier than the year 2023. The DOT does have funding to buy right-of-way for the road.” Mills added that some property owners in the proposed route of the bypass had already contacted NCDOT about property acquisition. In 2014, NCDOT’s website estimated construction to begin in 2030. With the inevitability of the bypass, Jamestown officials began to look into developmental possibilities and updated the town’s Land Development Ordinance to reflect possible changes. A Bypass District was established in 2009 “to provide opportunities for compatible and sustainable development along the future Jamestown Bypass. … Goals of the Bypass District include providing a pleasant environment for motorists, a safe environment for pedestrians along the secondary streets; ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians; and preserving the capacity of the Bypass to accommodate high traffic volumes at high speeds. Uses in this district include services, employment, residential and industrial. Allowed building/lot types include Urban Workplace, Shopfront Commercial, Multi-Family Cluster, Attached House and Civic Building.” Lot sizes and other specifications were detailed. A bypass scenic corridor was planned “providing for buffering of the bypass to

protect the traffic carrying capacity of the road and to provide for a pleasant experience for motorists using the bypass.” “We wanted to look at what we think would happen along that corridor as it relates to development,” said Matthew Johnson, Jamestown planning director, in early-2014. He mentioned the one-mile stretch of bypass that is now designated Jamestown Parkway. Since 2014, Millis and Main apartments have been constructed by Koury Corporation at the intersection of Jamestown Parkway and East Main Street. Koury’s Grandover expansion was held up for several years until the company knew exactly what route the bypass would take. Johnson also mentioned the Harvey Road-Hethwood Drive area and a tract on Dillon Road surrounded on three sides by Deep River. Volz told the Town Council on March 18 of that year that there was interest in moving the bypass project forward. Still, delayed as it was, the project looked like it would actually happen sometime. This prompted the Jamestown Town Council to slightly reverse their July 17, 2007, stance opposing the bypass. At its June 24, 2015, meeting, the Council unanimously approved a resolution stating the town was in favor of the Connect NC Board Initiative. The initiative would mean improvements to roads, ports and rail traffic.

The minutes show that Mayor Keith Volz suggested the resolution, which did not actually change the earlier decision, but, rather, voiced support of funding of the project. “(The bypass) is going to come through anyway,” Volz said. “Whether the money that’s in [Connect NC] is going to speed it up, I’m not sure, but it’s pretty inevitable we’re going to get it.” He said that the only thing that would happen if the bond was passed was that the funding would be moved up. Carrie Spencer, then the planner for Jamestown, said construction could begin “as early as 2017.”

“The fear we had 10 years ago was the fact that we thought the Town would be by-passed by motorists. But, we have new businesses located here. We are now more of a destination Town. The Town now has a traffic and safety problem.” The Connect NC Bond passed the Senate in 2015, but no money was allotted for transportation. An area newspaper stated in July 2017, “State officials plan to greatly accelerate the extension of the Jamestown Bypass from its current ending at Vickrey Chapel Road to the U.S. 311 interchange in High Point.” The article goes on to

say, “To the south, the Jamestown project wins the prize for the Greensboro area’s most accelerated construction schedule. The project’s 4.4-mile, second and final leg had not been set for construction until 2025, but was moved up to 2019 recently when more money became available.”

The long-awaited – by some – construction of the Jamestown Bypass actually began in late-2018 and is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

If it’s too hot to keep your hand pressed to it, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Walk on a grassy area, instead.

— If you must walk your dog on pavement (you live in the city, for example), place booties on your dog’s paws to protect them. — Make sure your pet has plenty of cool, clean water to drink, even if it spends all day indoors. — Don’t let your pet out in the backyard unless there’s a shady, open-air spot for it to rest. A blog post at Vets Now breaks down the details. Even when the air temperature is below 80 F, asphalt on the street can reach 125 F, especially on sunny days with little wind. That’s hot enough to cause severe skin burns, even on dogs’ seemingly tough pads. Brick and concrete pavement are only slightly cooler. So don’t leave it to chance. Take control of your pet’s comfort and safety this summer by making sure they are protected from heat-related injuries. Ilhan Omar holds America in contempt BY RICH LOWRY Beto O’Rourke, the losing Texas senator candidate who bootstrapped his way into becoming a losing presidential candidate, had a message for refugees who had come to America: Your new country is a hellhole. The former congressman told a roundtable of refugees and immigrants in Nashville, Tennessee: “This country was founded on white supremacy. And every single institution and structure that we have in this country still reflects the legacy of slavery and segregation and Jim Crow and suppression.” Just in case the newcomers were inclined to believe that they had escaped to the greatest country on Earth, an open, dynamic, generous society that, whatever their struggles now, will afford them opportunities unimaginable back home — Beto was there to tell them of all its sins. He had made himself into an instrument of woke assimilation. This is the backdrop of the controversy over Ilhan Omar, the Somali-born left-wing member of Congress whom Donald Trump urged, in particularly noxious tweets, to return to her native country and fix it before presuming to tell us what to do. It’s a mistake, though, to think that Omar is anything other than on her way to total assimilation, only on the terms set out by Beto O’Rourke. American has two assimilation problems. One is immigrants feeling only a tenuous connection to America, and getting isolated in ethnic enclaves. The other is immigrants like Omar — and some of her second-generation colleagues — assimilating into the America of identity politics and grievance. They have learned to speak not just English, but the language of oppression. They understand our system (at least no less than

the average officeholder), but hold it in low regard. They know our history, as taught by an instructor cribbing from Howard Zinn. They may be citizens, but they are certainly outraged victims. According to a profile in The Washington Post, Omar felt betrayal immediately upon getting to America. “I arrived at the age of 12 and learned that I was the extreme other,” she explained to The Post, noting bullying when she was in school in Arlington, Virginia, an affluent Washington, D.C. suburb. “I was black. I was Muslim. I also learned I was extremely poor and that the classless America that my father talked about didn’t exist.” Somehow, despite all the depredations, she gained a seat in Congress. Omar doesn’t represent a majority-minority district. She started her elected career, as The Post puts it, by getting to know “older peace-and-justice hippies.” She attended Black Lives Matter protests, and established relationships with all the left-wing groups in Minneapolis. Omar’s default is to blame America first. She explained that local Somali-Americans attempted to join the Islamic State as a function of “systemic alienation.” She contends that she has met American veterans “who say the most horrendous things, who have complete disregard for life.” And she accuses her congressional colleagues of singling her out for demonization. Anyone who thinks these attitudes are alien to America has never been to a college campus or watched MSNBC. In short, whatever foolhardy things Trump may tweet, Ilhan Omar is not suited to return and fix Somalia, rather to join a segment of the American elite. Turn nature finds into artful sunprints

By donna erickson donna’s day: creative family fun

“You know, it makes a fellow think, The shape of you, the shape of me, the shape of everything I see ...” begins Dr. Seuss in one of his whimsical, poetic books, “The Shape of Me and Other Stuff.” As the images and rhyming continue, we are happily reminded that everything around us is unique. The shape of things can become a focus for all ages when you do this stunning sunprint project. This isn’t a rainy day activity — save it for a bright sunny day! First, enjoy searching for and collecting flat items in nature or familiar small objects around you. Arrange them on a readily available sunpaper product and place them under the power of the direct sun. Within minutes, interesting shapes will appear like magic. Art! Here’s what you need: — A sunny day. — Gathered flat nature finds such as leaves, ferns and feathers, or objects in your home like a key, toy or lace — anything you want to print in silhouette. — Sunprint treated paper available at art stores and online. — Cardboard and clips or a clipboard.

When specialists disagree By keith roach, M.D. to your good health DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a snowbird who uses two different cardiologists for my health, and I am devoted to both of them. However, they have conflicting advice. I have coronary artery disease and had three stents placed in New York. I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. — S.T.M. DEAR S.T.M.: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many

months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@

Go green this summer BY ANgeLA SHeLf MeDeARIS KitcheN diVa

* Wash your greens immediately to rid the leaves of pests and dirt. You don’t need a storebought vegetable spray to properly clean greens. Just fill a kitchen sink or large bowl with warm water and a few tablespoons of vinegar (apple cider or white vinegar are just fine). Submerge your greens in the solution, swoosh them around gently, and shake off excess water. * Air-dry your rinsed greens on a paper towel or clean hand towel, then wrap them loosely and store in the fridge. * Remove the hardy stalks, ribs and/or stems just before cooking with greens like Swiss chard, watercress or kale. Either discard the stems, or remove them, finely dice and cook them first with onions or garlic as you would celery. * Cook your greens fast. Summer greens tend to be much softer and just need a quick flash of heat on the stovetop with just a bit of oil. Stir constantly, as they will wilt, and use right away. * Try summer greens in place of spinach in your favorite recipes. Purslane, Swiss chard, watercress and arugula all are great substitutions for spinach in most recipes. * Keep it simple. Summer greens can be enjoyed raw or cooked and have a light flavor that can easily drown in heavy sauces or spices. This recipe using wilted summer greens puts a flavorful twist on a potato salad.

Summer is one of the best seasons to indulge in beautiful, leafy green vegetables. These include the most common varieties seen in grocery stores or farmer’s markets, like spinach, kale, collards, mustard greens or Swiss chard. You also can eat the green, leafy tops of many root vegetables, such as beets, turnips and rutabagas. Greens should be stored in a perforated bag with a moist paper towel to keep them fresh. They can last up to a week in the refrigerator. To prepare them for use, wash thoroughly on both sides to remove any soil that clings to them. Spinning in a salad spinner or allowing to drip dry removes excess moisture that may be undesirable when eating or cooking. Greens can be eaten fresh in a salad or cooked. There has been some debate about whether greens are more nutritious fresh or cooked. Cooking breaks down the cell walls and releases some of the phytochemicals, like the carotenoids and ferulic acid that are present in the plant, making more of them available to your body. These compounds are important for good health, making cooked greens a good option. On the other hand, the amount of water-soluble vitamins present in greens — like vitamin C and the B vitamins — decreases with cooking, so fresh also has its advantages. Either way, dark green leafy vegetables are an excellent source of vitaWILTED SUMMER min K, which is important in the GREENS WITH EGGS clotting of blood needed to heal AND POTATOES wounds. 4 large eggs Here are some tips from Organ- 2 ounces sliced bacon, cut ic Authority about cleaning and crosswise into 1/4-inch strips prepping greens before cooking: 1 small onion, finely chopped

Add onion, garlic and potatoes; season with 1 teaspoon of the salt and pepper and the cayenne pepper. 3. Cook, shaking pan occasionally, until bacon is crisp and potatoes are cooked and tender when pierced with a fork, 8–10 minutes. Remove from heat. Add honey mustard or whole-grain mustard plus honey, agave, stevia or sugar, and 1 tablespoon of white wine, apple cider or rice wine vinegar; toss to coat.

4. Toss greens and herbs in a large bowl, add warm potatoes and season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and remaining vinegar; toss again to coat. Peel and halve eggs and sprinkle with remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper. Arrange eggs over potatoes and greens. Serve immediately.

Vaden Landers Old-time/Country Blues

Mendenhall Transportation Terminal

A regular busker on the streets of Asheville, Vaden Landers is a true folk artist that focuses primarily on old-time and country blues music. Vaden Landers launched his musical career when he became known as part of a famous busking group in Asheville known as the Fly By Knight Rounders; which included the infamous Abby the Spoon Lady and the talented Chris Rodrigues. Vaden’s music is the epitome of art that is authentic and heartfelt. With a voice that’s been compared to a young Hank Williams, Vaden’s full band performance at the High Point Museum is not to be missed.

With over 100 songs in their repertoire, Black & Blue always delivers a fun, high-energy performance that keeps audience members up and dancing. Covering a wide array of genres, Black & Blue seamlessly transitions between Motown, beach, soul, and modern pop hits. Black & Blue consists of over ten members that fill the stage with harmonizing vocals, drums, guitars, keys, and a horn section. In addition to the music, Black & Blue’s live performance also features choreographed dancing. Black & Blue is one of the most versatile groups in the Triad and is sure to end this year’s Arts Splash summer concert series on a high note.
