Compiled By NORMA B. DENNIS Sermons by phone Shut-ins, members of the Jamestown United Methodist Church congregation and others in the community who are unable to access worship services online can now listen to scripture lessons and sermons each Sunday with only a phone call. Just dial (336) 270-2391. “We hope this service will allow everyone to have full access to the sermons each week,” said JUMC Pastor David Greene. “Please help reach out to those who may not know about the opportunity to enjoy sermons on their phones and share the telephone number.” GCS launching virtual schools Guilford County Schools (GCS) is launching two, tuition-free virtual schools for the 20202021 academic school year. Guilford eLearning Virtual Academy will be housed at Hunter Elementary School’s location and will serve grades K-5. Guilford eLearning University Prep will serve grades 6-8 and will be housed at Jackson Middle School’s location. Students in grades 9-12 can enroll in the eLearning University Prep Academy program while remaining assigned to their home school. Each school will have a principal, counselors, staff and teachers skilled in online learning. Long term, the virtual schools also will allow students who thrive online, need a more personalized approach to learning, or those who desire a more flexible learning environment continue to receive a quality education. More than 2.7 million students across 30 states were enrolled in some form of online learning prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and several countries have placed their entire K-12 curriculum online. Food drive info During the month of May the Missions Committee at Jamestown United Methodist Church held a drive-by food drop off with the donations going to the Helping Hands Food Pantry in High Point. John T. Langdon at Helping Hands reported that a total of 4,500 pounds of food was donated throughout the month. “Many thanks for coming through for Helping Hands High Point and our most vulnerable community,” Langdon said. JUMC also hosted a food drive for Helping Hands at the close of its virtual Vacation Bible School this summer. Members of the Chancel Choir helped with the food collection as participants dropped off their food donations.

Principal feels at home in new position By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com It is possible Jennifer Cooper had the smartest teddy bears in her neighborhood. As a girl she lined them up often and taught them well, sometimes assisted by her younger brother. Today, she is continuing that early experience in education as the new principal of Millis Road Elementary School. Along the way, of course, she increased her own skills by obtaining bachelor’s degrees in both special and elementary education and a master’s degree in educational lead-

ership from High Point University. Cooper noted that her grandmother and aunts were educators. “It is in my blood,” she said. “I began as a classroom teacher, but the seed was planted very early in my career to be in leadership as well. “Educators get to impact the life outcome of students and provide opportunities for all to make sure they are successful. Just as a house must be built on a firm foundation, education needs to be also,” she added, stressing the importance elementary education plays on the future of a child. Cooper comes to Millis Road

from Montlieu Academy of Technology, where she served as assistant principal since 2018. During that time first-grade proficiency grew from 29 to 51 percent. Cooper also has worked as curriculum facilitator and K-8 reading specialist at Johnson Street Global Studies. She is a member of the New Leaders Assistant Principal Leadership Academy. She was named principal at Millis Road July 28 and got right to work the next day. “I have been very warmly welcomed and received by the commusee principal, page 6

Celebrating a century plus five By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Anyone traveling north on Skeet Club Road in High Point on Aug. 7 may have been surprised at one point to see several clowns holding large signs standing in the right lane of the road. They were not advertising a car wash, but were encouraging drivers to honk their horns in celebration of Casey Medlin’s 105th birthday. Medlin, a resident of Brookdale Skeet Club, behind where the clowns were standing, was seated on the patio in front of the facility enjoying the activity. Haven Barrier (Sequin), Bea Hewston (Clownina) and Lejla Suvalic (Rosie), members of the local clown troupe INJOY, were joined by the group’s leader Ned McMillan (Flaco) and Joy Callanan, Brookdale Skeet Club programs director, to get as many cars as possible to beep for Medlin’s birthday. Ten High Point Police cars also paraded by with sirens blaring, horns honking and blue lights flashing to honor Medlin on this special occasion. Dr. John McKinney, who served as Medlin’s doctor until he moved to the retirement center, was a guest at the outdoor celebration. To top off the afternoon festivity, all

Casey Medlin waves to well wishes – gathered at a safe distance – to wish him a happy 105th birthday. His daughter-in-law, Sara Medlin, recruited a friend to design a special shirt for the occasion, which read “105 Years Young.” residents were served banana pudding, one of Medlin’s favorite desserts. “I enjoyed it Medlin said,” speaking of the day’s activities. The most remarkable aspect of Medlin’s life is not that he has lived 105 years, but that he has lived it well, staying active well past the age of 100. He grew up in Mills Home in Thomasville after his mother died in childbirth when he was 10. “There were lots of folks there that were like brothers and sisters to him and they became like extended family to us,” said Medlin’s son Danny, a Jamestown resident. The Medlin family included his wife, who passed away in 1997 and children Danny, Sonny, and Janis, who is also deceased. “Dad joined the Navy in 1936 and married Mom after he returned home. Because he was working on a government contract in a hosiery mill, he did not have to fight in WWII.” Medlin is best known for his dedication to the Thomasville High School Bulldogs. From 1962 to 2018, a total of 57 seasons, see Century, page 6

Council meets virtually again By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com For the fifth straight month, the Jamestown Town Council will meet virtually, this time at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 in the Civic Center. The Council will hold a public hearing to consider an amendment to the Town Code of Ordinances. For many years, the Council has met at 6:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month. The public hearing is to discuss changing the regular meeting time to 6 p.m. Also under consideration by the Council is approval of the new Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The plan the Council saw in July eliminated

the ball fields at Jamestown Park, something the Council did not approve, so the vote was continued until the August meeting so another option could be created, saving the ball fields. Additional items under old business include consideration of an amendment to the lease agreement with the Jamestown Public Library and consideration of approving contracts with nonprofits to provide services to the Town. Under new business will be the appointment of a Planning Board member from the Town’s extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) as well as approval of a Coronavisee council, page 2

Top golfers scheduled for Wyndham this week By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com A lot of big-name golfers are coming to the Wyndham Championship this week – but no spectators. Due to Covid-19, the PGA Tour has said there will be no spectators for the remainder of the season. However, that will not stop those living in houses lining the course to be outside cheering. Imagine living in the home just behind the No. 16 green and missing the tournament due to all the grandstands. Residents there should have an

unencumbered view this year. A large number of former Wyndham champions and other top-ranked golfers announced they would play this week. All appearances are subject to change. Davis Love III’s three victories (1992, 2006 then called the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, 2015) are second only to eight-time champion Sam Snead. This will be Love’s 24th appearance. Brandt Snedeker is a two-time winner, his first victory in 2007 being the see golf, page 6

Plans for Castleton Village submitted to Town By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Diamondback Investment Group appears to have listened to many of the complaints about the company’s original development plans for the Johnson farm property, along Guilford College and Mackay roads. The company formally presented a new design to the Jamestown Planning Department on July 10. The town’s Planning Board will begin discussion on Aug. 10. This is the first time the Planning Department has received any plans from Diamondback. The submitted plan is available at https://www.jamestown-nc.gov/ my-government/meeting-minutes-andschedules. Click on Planning Board meeting for Aug. 10.

This plan eliminates the controversial apartment complex on the 467-acre site. Only 765 townhomes and 644 singlefamily dwellings remain, totaling 1,409 units, along with a farmers’ market and 34 mixed-use structures. The eight major concerns Diamondback discerned from public comments were: a commercial area on Guilford College Road across from Cedarwood development, a swimming pool across from the Jordan Creek townhomes, preservation of the old farmhouse and artifacts, traffic, schools, number of apartment units, sidewalks along Mackay Road and a desire to make the commercial area consistent with PHOTO COURTESY DIAMONDBACK INVESTMENT GROUP the small-town feel of Jamestown. This is a proposed concept drawing of the townThe property will be developed in three homes submitted by Diamondback Investment Group for Castleton Village at the corner of Guilford see plans, page 2 College and Mackay roads.

continued from front phases, phase 1 consisting of 172 townhouses facing Guilford College Road and 270 single-family units with an entrance off Mackay Road. There will be eight new entrances to the entire development and Zach Tran, co-founder of Diamondback, said that Mackay Road would probably be widened to four lanes up to the current four-lane section. Also in phase 1 is a potential church to be located at the corner of Guilford and Guilford College Road, across from the development. Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson (no relation to the property owners) said he had no information about this. Ball fields will be located at the corner of Guilford

College and Mackay Roads and Diamondback plans to turn these over to the Town of Jamestown upon completion. The fields are not listed under any of the phase plans. The first set of plans for Castleton Village, which Diamondback principals unveiled at two neighborhood meetings Feb. 13 at GTCC, indicated the property would be developed into 312 apartments, 700 townhomes, and 600 singlefamily properties, potentially amounting to 1,612 units. The company presented a revision on the company website March 16. This plan showed approximately 208 apartments, 674 townhomes, 521 single-family homes and 700 multi-family

Preserving history

Edward Armstrong’s 1885 house is on Guilford College Road, just north of the Guilford Road intersection. History tells us Armstrong, worked for Clarence Mackay at his hunting lodge for more than 50 years. The Johnson property as well as the Cedarwood, Whittington Hall, Woodbine, Quarterpath Trace and portions of Forestdale North development were once part of the Mackay land. When Mackay died in 1938, Armstrong was able to buy much of the property. Armstrong’s grandsons, Ted and Bill Johnson, were the most recent owners. Diamondback representatives say the new Castleton Village was named because the Armstrong family came from Castleton, England. Some Cedarwood residents believe the Armstrong house is on the National Register of Historic Places but a search did not affirm that belief. They are concerned that the house will be destroyed for the new development. Diamondback originally said the house might be saved – at least for a few years – but now believe it is in such disrepair it cannot be saved. Part of the plan submitted to the Jamestown Planning Department reads, “The developer of Castleton Village understands and appreciates that the subject property has historical significance to the Town of Jamestown. Through conversations with the Johnson family and the Historic Jamestown Society, we have learned about the interesting heritage of this property as a hunting reserve. The Futrell-MackeyArmstrong house … still stands today but is in a very advanced state of disrepair. After a thorough evaluation by the appropriate experts in building and renovation, we have concluded that we are sadly not able to rehabilitate the structure for incorporation into the Castleton Village development. We are willing to donate the structure to an organization who would like to preserve it off-site and we welcome those discussions. “Unfortunately, the original [Mackay] hunting lodge no longer exists. However the Historic Jamestown Society provided us with the architectural elevations of that building. We are using the lodge as the design inspiration for the Castleton Village amenity center and the commercial buildings. In doing so, it is our intent to not only honor the previous life of this property but also ground the Castleton Village development in meaningful pieces of Jamestown’s history.”

homes, bringing the number to 1, 403 units. There will be three outparcels for restaurants and areas for medical or professional office space. There was still opposition from many in the area, including the Cedarwood and Jordan Creek neighborhoods across the street from the site who complained about the added traffic, apartments and commercial properties. “During the development of the 2020 LDP (Comprehensive Plan), town staff met with members of the Johnson family and inquired about the proposed future of the property,” Matthew Johnson said in his staff report on the Castleton Village plan. “Staff, knowing that the Johnson Farm represented a large portion of potentially developable land within the Town’s jurisdiction, felt that it would be prudent to carefully consider the future use of the property and include that in the comprehensive plan. The family indicated they felt it would be most likely it would be developed primarily as a residential community with a light mix of supporting commercial.” With that in mind, Johnson recommended adding a Planned Use Development (PUD) zoning amendment to the Land Development Ordinance. Now that the Jamestown Town Council has approved the PUD, Diamondback has requested rezoning of the property to PUD and Castleton Village must comply to PUD regulations. Diamondback has also requested annexation into the Town of Jamestown. The property is currently in Jamestown’s Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction, or ETJ, meaning the town has control of the areas but they are not technically within the town limits. If annexation is approved, the addition

would add about 0.5 square miles to the town’s size, which is currently 3 square miles. The town currently has about 4 square miles in the ETJ. The annexation question will be heard by the Town Council at a future date. The town’s population – currently 4,416 – could double in size once Castleton Village is fully developed. Diamondback said it would take 5-10 years to complete. Any construction at Castleton Village is still several months down the road. “Due to the size and complexity of this proposal, staff is recommending the following schedule for review by both Planning Board and Town Council,” Johnson said. “Staff feels that they, along with Planning Board and Town Council should have additional time to fully consider the proposal.” Therefore, the Planning Board held a public hearing on Aug. 10 with no public comment to discuss the rezoning request. The video of that meeting is available at https:// www.youtube.com/channel/UCmi_MH3cM_DfOvhsLO9ZC6w. Additional meetings will be available as well. Johnson has proposed the Planning Board hold a special called meeting Aug. 24 for more discussion and public comment, with the earliest possible vote on the matter at a third meeting Sept. 14. The Town Council would hold its first public hearing Oct. 20, with a special called meeting Nov. 3, leaving Nov. 17 as the earliest possible date a vote could occur. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, dates, times and locations are subject to change. Only one person at a time will be allowed to enter the Civic Center to address the Planning Board and Council in person.

NOTICE OF REMOTE PUBLIC HEARING HIGH POINT METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE City of High Point Municipal Office Building 211 South Hamilton St, High Point, NC City Council Chamber NOTICE is hereby given that on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020, at 10 a.m., a public hearing will be held before the High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Transportation Advisory Committee on the following requests. DRAFT 2045 High Point Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) The MTP is Federally mandated multi-modal transportation plan and is the official multi-modal transportation plan resulting from regional collaboration and consensus on a region’s transportation system. The DRAFT MTP was out for public review and comment from June 15 until July 31. DRAFT Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) The CTP is a State of North Carolina mandated multi-modal transportation plan. North Carolina General Statute 136-66.2 requires each MPO, with the cooperation of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), to develop a Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) serving present and anticipated travel demand in and around the MPO. When a CTP is adopted by the NCDOT, it represents the state’s concurrence with the locally identified transportation needs. The DRAFT CTP was out for public Review and Comment from June 15 until July 31 DRAFT Public Participation Policy (PPP) Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) must establish and periodically review and update their public involvement processes. These processes should assure early and continued public awareness of and access to the transportation decision-making process. Involving the public is a major challenge, especially in the metropolitan planning process, which is inherently complex, has a long time horizon, and is removed from project-specific planning. THE DRAFT PPP was out for a 45-day public comment period. In order to maintain the health, safety and well-being of our residents, staff and elected officials, the High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization (HPMPO) Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) Meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020, will be conducted electronically. Once the TAC is in session, please use the following link to listen to the meeting live. www.HighPointNC. gov/VirtualPublicMeeting There will be time allotted for Public Comment at this meeting. The public can submit comments by calling 336-883-3310 and leaving a message or by emailing written comments to greg.venable@highpointnc.gov. Email submissions and written comments should be kept at 350 words or less. The deadline for submitting public comments is Friday, Aug. 21, at 5:00 p.m. Please note that there are several Public Hearings regarding specific subject matters that will also be on this agenda. The time restrictions/deadline for the Public Comment Period do not apply to the Public Hearings that are scheduled. In accordance with recently adopted legislation regarding public hearings at remote meetings, after the public hearing is held, the required 24-hour waiting period will be open before a vote can be taken on this matter. During that time, the public can submit any additional comments on the subject matter for the public hearing. All comments received for the Public Hearing matters should include the subject matter for the public hearing. The deadline for submitting comments for the public hearings will be 24 hours after the public hearing is held by the TAC. Questions regarding the Public Comment Period or the Public Hearings that are scheduled can be directed to Greg Venable at 336-883-3310 or greg. venable@highpointnc.gov. August 12, 2020

For Cooper, family, friends and faith play a big part in who she is. She and her husband run together and they both enjoy camping, hiking and family dinners with their son. “We like creating memories with the simple things,” Cooper said. “I love to read, but most of it is nonfiction. I am currently reading Leverage Leadership 2.0 and The Speed of Trust. As a teacher, I always read Thank you Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco to my students. It was about a teacher who was invested in the lives of students.” Cooper feels remote learning used at the end of last year and to start this school year makes it more difficult to bond with

others, but she hopes to build a platform to help connect with staff, parents and students. “I want to ensure that the wonderful connectivity that this school has always had continues,” she said. “I want success for students and for teachers and feel up to the challenge (of dealing with remote learning).” Seeing technology as a way of life and important to future education, Cooper believes the pandemic has revealed a lack of equalities for success among students with and without access to it. She feels a responsibility to advocate for funding so all students can have devices to use at home and at school. Moving forward, Cooper is excited to start the new school year in a new position. “I feel extremely blessed to be part of Millis Road Elementary,” she said. “This school has a long history with deep roots. I wanted to be part of the magic that makes this school so special. It feels like home – the right place to be.”

He only handed over the responsibility upon reaching the age of 103. Times have certainly changed over the past 10-plus decades. Looking back, Medlin believes the most significant change came with the invention of the automobile. His first car was a Model A Ford. When Medlin turned 100 he renewed his driver’s license for five years, but lost it in 2017. For the next two years, he was chauffeured to football games where he faithfully climbed into the press box to fulfill his clock operator/scorekeeper duties. The press box was dedicated to Medlin in 2012 and a plaque still hangs over the

Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame presented him an “Unsung Hero Award” for his loyalty to the Thomasville Bulldog football program. For years, Medlin also enjoyed gardening, giving it up only after moving to Brookdale Skeet Club. Although Medlin is no longer directly involved in sports, he still likes to watch games on television. He especially enjoys baseball and is a true New York Yankees fan. He maintains a certain loyalty to the Thomasville Bulldogs, however, as witnessed by the red cap with a T on it that he wore on his birthday.
