Lydia sidewalk project on Council agenda By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

The wait for the East Main Street (Lydia) sidewalk project may soon be over. The Jamestown Town Council will consider accepting the lowest, responsive, responsible bidder for the project. The Council also will consider a

budget amendment for the project and a North Carolina Department of Transportation supplemental funding agreement for the project. Discussion on a text amendment to the town’s Land Development Ordinance will be heard during a public hearing. Lori Herron, of 2216 Guilford College Road, has asked for the amendment so she can keep her pot-bellied pigs, which are used as

emotional-support animals. (See related story, Pigs become hot topic at Council meeting) Article 2, Definitions, of the ordinance currently defines “limited agriculture” as “the keeping of gardens and animals for noncommercial domestic use. Such agriculture generally refers to, but is not limited to, domestic fowl such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, bees, and other small

animals (ex: rabbits). Limited agriculture does not permit livestock such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine or the like.” Herron wants to amend the text to read, “Limited agriculture does not permit livestock, animals used for food or fiber, such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine over 300 pounds, or the like, not to include miniature or pot-bellied pigs that are kept as

Sonya Deulina Williams always heard that you should not judge a book by its cover. But after writing her first novel, Mirrors: the Shadow Conspiracy, she felt strongly that the cover would be an essential part of her work. “The cover is the first thing people see, especially with online sales,” she said. “The book is available at Amazon as a paperback and on Kindle. My mom encouraged me to paint my own cover. I am not a professional, but the cover represents the story.” Williams’ parents are both artists and she grew up with that background. She also has been writing stories, poetry and journaling since she was a child. While attending North Carolina State University, she received a double major in psychology and English with a concentration in creative writing. She attended grad school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Although she once considered journalism as a career, Williams instead became a mental health therapist and is currently self-employed with Santé Counseling. Her love of writing, however, never dissipated.

Sonya Deulina Williams’ first book, Mirrors: the Shadow Conspiracy, is published by Chandra Press. It was released Aug. 1 on Amazon as a paperback and is available on Kindle.

“I did not like the idea of writing self-help books, which is what a lot of therapists do,” Williams said. “My book is a sci-fi, psychological thriller. But my background as a therapist does bleed over into my writing. “There is a certain amount of realism that must go into a book, but I had to do research on things I was less familiar with.” The book, which Williams started in 2015, highlights Sarah and Sam (Samantha) in alternating chapters. An online synopsis explains that the two women have never met but each begins to experience dreams and memories that aren’t her own. As these visions increase in intensity and frequency and the women

struggle to keep a grip on reality, they embark on a journey to understand what is happening to them. There is a connection between them, however, that has larger implications than either can imagine. As they begin to uncover the truth behind the visions, they are thrown into the midst of a dark conspiracy with dire consequences. see author, page 3

Due to expected high attendance for the public hearing this month, the Town Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center. The public is invited to attend.

GTCC picks Clarke to be new president By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The Board of Trustees of Guilford Technical Community College has selected Dr. Anthony J. Clarke to be the new president of the school. Clarke succeeds Dr. Randy Parker, who retired the end of July. The decision is pending final approval by the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges at its next board meeting Aug. 16. Clarke was one of three finalists introduced to the public in July. Jamestown’s George Ragsdale is the chair of GTCC’s Board of Trustees. “The Board could not be more excited about this appointment,” Ragsdale wrote in an email. “Dr. Clarke brings the highest level of expertise from his work within the N.C. Community College System and his work in private industry. We are confident that he is a dynamic leader for the future of GTCC, and we look forward to introducing Dr. Clarke to our community partners throughout the region.” “I’m deeply honored to have this opportunity to serve as the next president of Guilford Technical Community College,” said

Dr. Anthony J. Clarke

Clarke in an email to students and staff. “I want to thank the GTCC Board of Trustees, as well as the college’s faculty and staff for the trust they have placed in me.” Clarke has served as president of Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, N.C., since 2014. Under his leadership, curriculum enrollment at the school has increased by 9 percent, reversing a 26 percent decline over the previous five years. He also strengthened the college’s partnerships with two county school systems, resulting in an 85 percent increase in dual enrollment. He has nearly 15 years experience with community colleges and held faculty, administrative and senior leadersee GTCC, page 3

Pigs become hot topic at Council meeting Lori Herron loves her pigs. So much so, in fact, that she is willing to go so far as to request a text amendment to the Jamestown Land Development Ordinance which would allow her to keep the pigs on her property. Herron pled her case to the Planning Board in July. After a brief discussion, the Board unanimously denied her request, but the final say lies with the Town Council,

which has scheduled a public hearing on the matter for its Aug. 20 meeting. Article 2, Definitions, of the ordinance currently defines “limited agriculture” as “the keeping of gardens and animals for noncommercial domestic use. Such agriculture generally refers to, but is not limited to, domestic fowl such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, bees, and other small animals (ex: rabbits). Limited agriculture does not permit livestock such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine or the like.”

Herron, who lives at 2216 Guilford College Road, claims her pot-belly pigs are pets and therapy animals, not livestock. She wants to amend the text to read, “Limited agriculture does not permit livestock, animals used for food or fiber, such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine over 300 pounds, or the like, not to include miniature or potbellied pigs that are kept as and considered to be pets.” “We’re seeking to clarify that pigs of a certain size, specifically miniature pigs, are not livestock,” Herron

said. She added that the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not consider them to be livestock. Nor does her veterinarian. According to the American Mini Pig Association, standard miniature pigs are generally 15-28 inches tall, although some breeds are taller. Pot-belly pigs can weigh from 60 to 250 pounds and live 12-15 years. A typical farm pig, on the other hand, destined for slaughter, could weigh up to 770 pounds and be see pigs, page 3

Cholesterol plummets after giving up bread BY KeITh ROACh, M.D. to your good HealtH DEAR DR. ROACH: Something’s been puzzling me. I’m a 71-year-old female, and my cholesterol tends to hover around the 240 mark. However, I had to give up bread for several weeks due to oral surgery, and my next blood test results showed my cholesterol had plummeted 40 points, to 206. (I actually had them double-check, since I thought they had given me someone else’s report!) I asked my doctor about this, but he didn’t know of any reason for it to happen. My husband thinks it may have something to do with the yeast. Do you have any ideas? — R.R. DEAR R.R.: No, I don’t think it’s the yeast; I think it’s because you are eating fewer carbohydrates from bread, which get quickly converted to sugar and enters the blood. Sugar has effects on blood cholesterol (especially on triglycerides). Although a 20 percent drop is higher than the average, it’s not out of the expected range. The other thing that is often forgotten is what you changed your diet to. If you ate overall fewer calories, you may have lost a few pounds, and sometimes that can have a big beneficial effect on cholesterol. It also may be the case that you ate more fiber from vegetables, nuts and fruits, which in itself can help reduce cholesterol. It was wise to double-check, because although the lab only rarely makes mistakes, the level in the body does vary a bit. It’s possible that the 240 was higher than your average and the 206 was lower. Following the trend helps prevent those kinds of errors. DEAR DR. ROACH: There is a lot of information about how much one should exercise that doesn’t seem to apply to seniors. I am a 76-year-old man in acceptable health for my age. I have never fallen, but my balance has declined some. I walk about 30 leisurely minutes a day, but I wouldn’t say any of the walk could be defined as “cardio.” When walking on uneven ground, I use a walking stick. I am active in my yard; I mow my lawns and tend vegetable and flower beds. Is this enough of an exercise regimen? — L.S. DEAR L.S.: You are doing a lot better than most people who are 76. The optimal for you depends, because your exercise regimen has to work for your life. I can say that people who exercise a bit more than you do (including some work with weights and some more vigorous exercise to get the heart rate up — that’s what defines “cardio”) are likely to have a slightly lower risk of many diseases; however, it’s very wise to be cautious when you have a balance issue, even if you have never fallen. Using a walking stick is great if it helps you (many people have written to say that they use one or two sticks to help maintain balance). What you don’t want is an exercise regimen that you won’t like to do, because people quickly quit exercising if they aren’t enjoying at least some aspect of it. So, keep doing what you are doing: It will help prevent loss of balance, strength and function. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. LINEBERRY -Since 1919

BY LINDA WILLARD JameStowN frieNdS meetiNg

There are 31 towns, communities, places world wide that are named Florence. There are also two airports named Florence and one prison with the name Florence. So, where is Florence, North Carolina and how did this city get its name? Was it named for the famous city in Italy or did we take our name from the city in South Carolina? Maybe we “borrowed” the name from Ohio, Vermont, or maybe Florence, Nova Scotia in Canada. In the 19th century, Florence, North Carolina, was a thriving village located on present-day Penny Road in

MORDECAI MENDENHALL, SR. March 1713 – November 3, 1803 Mordecai Mendenhall, Sr. was born in March 1713 in Concord, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Mendenhall was the son of John Mendenhall and Susanna Pierson Mendenhall. The Mendenhall family were members of Concord Friends Meeting in Chester, Pennsylvania. The date and place of Mendenhall’s marriage to Louisa Thornberry is unknown. On May 21, 1735, Mendenhall married Charity Grubb Beeson. The Mendenhall’s

The community is thought to have grown out of the site of Barnum Chapel, a non-denominational church established by Benjamin Beard sometime prior to the Civil War. Florence, North Carolina, was also the home of many Quakers and Quaker-owned shops and businesses. The 19th-century community of Florence, North Carolina, had at least 11 dwellings, a store, two blacksmith ships, one wood shop and two gunsmith shops. Florence, North Carolina, could also boast of a stagecoach stop, Chestnut Hill. Florence also

had a post office. The post office was called Westminster. The community could just as easily have been named Westminster as Florence. The first time the name Florence appears to have been used is when William Gardner named his school. in the Florence, North Carolina, community in 1857. So where did the name Florence come from? It is a very good question that no one seems to have the answer to! No one seems to know who or what Florence was. Florence, Italy ,is many, many centuries older than Florence, North Carolina. Florence, South Carolina, was settled in 1871 and incorporated in 1890. Therefore, it doesn’t seem likely that Florence, North Carolina “borrowed” our name from the city in South Carolina.

would become the parents of seven children, six sons and one daughter. In 1736, Mendenhall and his wife moved to Fredrick County, Virginia. New Garden Mendenhall was granted a Certificate of Removal (permission to move the family’s membership) from Friends Meeting in Pennsylvania to Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Fredrick County, Virginia on the ninth month, seventeenth day, 1736. The family next moved to Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Rowan County, North Carolina (present-day Alamance County). They next moved to the New Gar-

den community of Guilford County, North Carolina, then to the Deep River community and finally to High Point, North Carolina where they joined Springfield Friends Meeting. The Mendenhall’s were a part of the early migration south from Pennsylvania. Mendenhall acquired several hundred acres of land along the Deep River in Guilford County, North Carolina. During the American Revolution, Mendenhall furnished food and horses to the American troops. At one point, his home was used as a temporary hospital for the wounded. Mendenhall is

listed in the Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Index for furnishing supplies to the militia during the Revolutionary War. In 1752, Mendenhall leased land from agents of the Earl of Granville. This land was located in the southwest corner of present-day Guilford County, North Carolina. Mordecai Mendenhall died on November 3,1803 at the age of 90. His wife, Charity Beeson Mendenhall died on September 20, 1809. Mordecai and Charity are buried next to each other in the Springfield Friends Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina.

Squeeze in last outings before summer passes By donna erickson donna’s day: creative family fun So little time left, and so much yet to do. Do you feel that way this month, realizing that warm and long summer days soon will come to an end? Chatting over the fence, my neighbor, a mom of two young energetic kids, lamented how quickly the season is passing by. Many of the outings and activities her family put on a list in June simply never happened. Eager to squeeze in some of the starred favorites before Labor Day, she sat down with her calendar and put them in. In ink. “So, what made the cut?” I asked. “We’ll bike to a nearby family-friendly ethnic restaurant,” she said. “It will be fun to plan a route, park our bikes and sit outside on a breezy patio to eat a meal with new tastes. We’re also going to an indoor ice skating rink. It’s off-season, so the price is right. Plus, for once, we don’t have to slather ourselves with sunscreen! “I also saved a day to be grounded in nature and go to a state park. We’ll enjoy a picnic in the woods, and learn new things from the naturalists who share their knowledge of the local habitat.” Like my neighbor, are there still a few things left on your summer fun list? Maybe it’s experiencing a new exhibit at a zoo, visiting a historical site or gathering friends at a nature trail for a picnic by a waterfall. Put them on your schedule now and make them happen.

Get kids involved in the prep before you go, even for mini outings. Choose healthy snacks to take along that they can carry in their own backpacks. And don’t forget to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Here’s a craft idea to encourage your young school-age kids to sip water during your adventure. Like supplies on an explorer’s trek, it’s a “canteen” designed with their creativity. Here’s the stuff you need: — One medium-size plastic or lightweight metal water bottle — One 42-inch strip of 1-inch-wide ribbon — One 3-inch-by-10-inch rectangle of craft foam decorated with stickers or drawings — Household glue Here’s the fun: Glue the underside of the midpoint of the ribbon to the base of the bottle. Lift the halves of the ribbon upward evenly on each side. Glue the craft foam around the bottle and over the ribbon to secure them in place. Tie the loose ends of the ribbon in a knot. Fill with water and wear over shoulders. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. continued from front 35-71 inches tall. Most of Herron’s pigs are about the size of a large cat. “Our pigs, none of them, come higher than just below my knee,” she said in July. “At the most, the biggest one might be 120 lbs. and she’s not very big. My son has picked her up to carry her to the vet.” Herron reiterated her belief that the pot-bellied pig is not livestock. “You know when an animal is a pet. You don’t intend to eat it when you’re not raising it to sell. When you’re not raising it to take its fur and sell that. When it’s something you love with all your heart and it breaks your heart with something happens to them. “I get passionate about this. I’m sorry. I just love these little guys so much.” Herron takes her pigs to the vet regularly and they all get rabies shots and other vaccinations needed. A vet comes once a year to give booster shots. She added that her pigs are certified emotionalsupport animals, and help her through some medical problems. “If nothing else can convince you they are not livestock, maybe that would help,” she said. Friends and family have circulated a petition and by the July 8 meeting, had received 23 pages of com-

ments stating pigs are pets and nearly 5,000 signatures. All but three of the public comments at the Planning Board meeting were against allowing pigs inside town limits. Several speakers were nearby property owners. Planning Director Matthew Johnson also is opposed to the amendment. “Essentially what this does is to allow anybody in a residential-zoned neighborhood to be able to keep an unlimited number of the pigs as long as they are 300 pounds or less,” Johnson said. “I’m not sure we could define the word ‘pet’.” Johnson has checked other municipalities and most prohibit pigs in city limits but, if they are permitted, there is a limit of two. Herron has 10. Last year, she had two and got two more rescue pigs, one of which turned out to be pregnant with six piglets. At the July Planning Board meeting, Johnson stated he would like the Council to request his department do more research and suggest an ordinance update which would better define the requirements for keeping “miniature” or “potbellied” pigs in residentially zoned areas, as well as guidelines for limitations on the keeping of other animals (cats, dogs, exotic pets, etc.), including numbers and

continued from front conditions for each. He is waiting for the Council’s decision to proceed. The matter began when the town’s Planning Department received an anonymous phone call on Feb. 26 of this year complaining of “trash and odors” coming from Herron’s residence. Johnson investigated and found a large pile of plumbing rubbish in the yard. When he attempted to go to the front door to speak with the owner, his access was blocked by a fence enclosing 10 pigs. Johnson called to request a meeting, which was set up and then canceled. Johnson then sent a notice on Feb. 27 outlining several violations and requesting the rubbish be removed within 10 days and the pigs within 30 days. The plumbing trash was removed but Herron requested an additional 60 days to find a new home for the pigs, thus moving the date of compliance to May 27. Herron attended the Town Council meeting May 21 and asked to be allowed to keep the pigs on her property. She said she had been told in the past by the Town that the pigs were not a problem. She considers them members of her family and she presented a letter from her doctor saying they were emotional support animals.

“I don’t think the way my story is handled has been done before,” Williams said. “I think my concept is unique. It involves the dream world, psychological, hypnosis and family elements, and a lot of mystery.” Williams noted the story is also fastpaced with surprise components. She considers the ending satisfying to readers while still leaving them wondering what happens next. “To continue writing would have made the book too long, so I decided the story needed a series,” Williams said. “I am about 20% finished with the sequel and my goal is to finish by Christmas so I can begin to edit it. I hope the experience gained from writing my first book will help me work faster on the second.”

As a full-time traveling therapist, Williams often found herself writing between patient appointments when working on her first book. “I am not a linear thinker,” she said. “My ideas come to me sporadically. I wrote the book in pieces and than put it together.” Williams, who lives in Jamestown with her husband Gregory, loves working as a counselor – meeting people where they are and helping them find peace and resolution. She does not feel she should have to choose between counseling and writing, but concedes she may need to cut back on her counseling hours if her writing career grows. “It all feels like it is part of what I am suppose to do,” she said.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Clarke spent two decades working in industry and brings a deep understanding of the operational demands manufacturers face in today’s business environment. He worked as a production engineer for General Mills, a consulting manager for Arthur Andersen, and a quality leader and Six Sigma Black Belt at GE Aircraft Engines. “The skills and experience I’ve developed in military, industry and community college leadership positions have prepared me to serve,” Clarke said. “I will work hard to lead the talented team at GTCC and contribute to the educational attainment and economic develop-

ment of Guilford County both now and into the future.” “On behalf of the Board, thank you to all who participated in the selection process – the Presidential Selection Committee, the faculty, staff and students who participated in the Presidential Profile and Finalists Forums surveys, and the many members of the community who shared their vision for the future of our College,” Ragsdale said. “Your input was vital to the Board’s decision and we are grateful for your commitment to this most important appointment of our next President and for your dedication every day to the mission of GTCC. “We are confident that he is a dynamic leader for the future of GTCC and we look forward to introducing Dr. Clarke to our community partners throughout the region.” “I’m excited to join the GTCC family and build

on the college’s legacy of exceptional service to Guilford County,” Clarke said. Dr. Gordon Burns, Jr. will continue to serve as interim president until Dr. Clarke begins on or before Nov. 1. Clarke was selected after an extensive nationwide search that attracted a diverse pool of over 70 applicants. The Association of Community Colleges Trustees assisted GTCC with the search and selection process. The firm held a series of listening sessions with faculty, staff, students, and members of the community to narrow the field to the top three candidates. Guilford Technical Community College is the third largest of 58 institutions in the North Carolina Community College System. GTCC serves nearly 35,000 students annually from five campuses and a Small Business Center.

Just how hot can a hot car get? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This morning, I was walking into the drugstore when I heard a small dog frantically barking from a nearby car. I looked in the window and saw a toy poodle rushing back and forth along the back seat, putting her paws on the closed windows and barking at everyone passing by. The car was not running, so no air conditioning, though it was parked in a shady spot. I rushed inside the store and called for the manager, who contacted the police. They immediately opened the car and rescued the little dog, who was panting heavily. Please let your readers know that leaving your pet inside a locked car, even in the shade, can be a death sentence! — Relieved Pet Mom in Maine

on a pleasant day with temperatures in the mid-70s, the interior of a car can heat up to life-threatening levels of more than 100 F. That’s even on a cloudy day, or when parked in a shady spot. Even if you leave your pet inside a locked, running car with the air conditioning on, that’s still not acceptable. Your pet will be very anxious without you present, and anything might happen while you’re away. If you want to take your pet with you, make sure the places you go will welcome pets inside. (Your pet should be well-trained and responsive to your commands, and not aggressive to other dogs.) Or, have a friend come along and sit in the running car with your dog or walk them in a nearby grassy area or park while you shop. Otherwise, leave pets at home. The risk is not worth it.

DEAR RELIEVED: I’m glad this story had a happy ending! Folks, even

Enough with violent white supremacists BY RICh LOWRY At some point in the late 1960s, you could be forgiven for thinking that the FBI was in charge of the KKK. It conducted an operation that infiltrated, manipulated and ran the group into the ground. With violent white hate again on the rise, we should take some inspiration — even if the methods can’t be replicated — from the FBI’s past grappling with racist extremists. If there were any doubt that the country has a white nationalist problem, the shocking attack on an El Paso, Texas, Walmart should remove it. These selfradicalizing freaks, a subset of the broader mass-shooting phenomenon, take inspiration from prior acts of vicious mayhem and cheer high body counts on internet message boards. They are domestic subversives and terrorists, and deserve to be treated as such. There is no doubt that if we had suffered a string of massacres on our soil carried out by Islamic radicals, we’d do everything in our power to diminish and hopefully eradicate the danger — indeed, we have. The national response to racist extremists should show the same alacrity and resolve, while acknowledging that they represent a different, more-difficultto-counter threat than the old Klan. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson told FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to go after the Klan as he had the Communists. Running until 1971 and involving 26 field offices, COINTELPRO-White Hate targeted groups and people deemed violent threats, not their ideology per se. The effort was comprehensive and noholds-barred. In his history of the FBI, Tim Weiner writes, “The FBI dangled small fortunes before potential KKK informers, offered outright bribes to Klansmen who could serve as double agents inside state and local police forces, planted bugs and wiretaps in Klaverns, carried out black-

bag jobs to steal membership lists and (on at least one occasion) dynamite caches.” The FBI worked to preempt violent acts, and gained an enormous influence over Klan groups. The New Orleans office was so successful at degrading the Louisiana chapter of the UKA that the office’s concern became propping the group up, lest its disintegration loosen the FBI’s control. Overall, Klan membership shrank from an estimated 14,000 members in 1964 to 4,300 in 1971. Per Shelton himself, “the FBI’s counterintelligence program hit us in membership and weakened us for about 10 years.” Of course, the contemporary FBI obviously isn’t going to take over the “altright,” nor should we want it to. The abuses of the COINTELPRO programs — the FBI also targeted civil-rights groups and the New Left, among others — became notorious when they were exposed in the 1970s. There are also practical obstacles to the FBI duplicating its anti-Klan work. The Klan was an organization, whereas today’s white supremacists are free-floating haters posting anonymously on the internet. Yet the FBI needs to be intensely focused on this threat. The bureau should take an intelligence-based approach. It should monitor sewer message boards like 8chan, the forum for white-supremacist propaganda. Posters who cross from First Amendment-protected speech to incitement should be prosecuted. The FBI should interview anyone expressing sympathy with terrorism — just as it does with suspected Islamic extremists — and surveil such persons as appropriate and permitted under the law. El Paso was an outrage, and surely not the last. We need to react accordingly. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Couch Theatre BY AMY ANDeRSON Poms (PG-13) — Bringing new meaning to the word “squad,” “Poms” follows Martha (Diane Keaton), a retired teacher with a terminal cancer who moves into an “active” retirement community filled with quirky personalities, a ton of amenities and a shocking lack of freedom. Turns out residents must participate in an extracurricular activity vetted by a mean-girls (now, mean-old-ladies) type committee. Martha opts to create a cheerleading squad and recruits five other free thinkers, including her adorably rebellious neighbor Sheryl (Jacki Weaver). They set out to prove —

with warmth, humor and powerful bonds of friendship — that a sextet of 60and 70-somethings still got it. Although “Poms” took some knocks for pandering to the AARP set, I thought it a cute movie showing a vibrant and fun ride through later life. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (PG) — In Ryme City in the Pokemon Universe, humans and Pokemon live together peaceably. Harry Goodman was a detective there until an apparent Mewtoo attack and/or car accident took his life. When his son Tim (Justice Smith) comes to collect his belongings, he meets Detective Pikachu

Warner Bros.

Justice Smith in Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), with exceptional detecting skills but partial amnesia, who used to be his dad’s partner. Tim, unlike anyone else, is able to hear and communicate with Pikachu, and is persuaded to pair up to investigate Harry’s death. I enjoyed

the tack taken by director Rob Letterman (“Goosebumps”). It’s weird but not off-putting. Reynolds and Smith are endearing, and it’s funny and enjoyable for all age groups. The Curse of La Llorona (R) — The legend

of La Llorona has it that a woman, blinded by rage and jealousy, drowned her sons in a river. She is condemned to walk the earth for eternity until she finds the bodies of her sons, and she’ll snatch up every kid she can find in the process. Flash to 1970s Los Angeles, and a social worker (Linda Cardellini) “rescues” the children of a deranged mother. The children are subsequently drowned by La Llorona. The mother sics the weeping spirit on the social worker, who has two young kids of her own. She calls in Father Perez (Tony Amendola, also seen in “Annabelle” of “The Conjuring” universe) to help, and the group must

battle every jump scare and pool of water in sight.

Tolkien (PG-13) — Many know J.R.R. Tolkien as one of the most creative minds of our time, breathing life into fanciful and fearsome creatures that have captured the imaginations of countless men, women and children since “The Hobbit” was published in 1937. But this biopic, with Nicholas Hoult in the title role, focuses on Tolkien’s early life — in school, his courtship with wife Edith (Lily James) and his experiences in World War I that presumably shaped his later “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Yes, your kids will eat veggies, and like it! Thirty-one percent of kids liked a veggie alone, while 64% liked a veggie when it was served with their favorite dip. In addition, just 6% of kids refused the vegetable when served with a flavored dip, compared with 18% who refused the veggie without any dip. During a second experiment, researchers found that kids ate significantly more of a previously rejected or disliked vegetable when it was offered with a favorite reduced-fat herb dip than when it was offered alone. Once you find a dip recipe that your child enjoys, you can use it as a sandwich dressing too. Dips can be prepared from two days up to a week in advance. Package the dip and a few colorful and crunchy vegetables like zucchini, squash, cucumbers, cauliflower, red bell pepper, broccoli, carrots and celery in a reusable container with compartments and an air-tight lid. This will allow you to prepare everything for school lunches ahead of time and have a “grab and go” snack when needed. Try these simple recipes for my athlete-friendly Protein-Packed Veggie Dip and my Herb and Spice Ranch Dip. You’re guaranteed to increase the quantity of vegetables your family eats each week by serving these dips!

BY ANGeLA SheLf MeDeARIS KitcHeN diVa This is one of my dear friends’ first year as an elementary school teacher. She’s also the mother of two boys. Not only does she have to prepare a healthy school lunch and snacks for herself, she also must pack lunches and snacks that her kids will love. I’m sure that this is a common dilemma for working parents with school-aged children. Proper nutrition is a key ingredient for school success because it fuels brain cells and gives your child the energy and nutrients needed for optimal learning. Packing your child’s lunch and preparing healthy snacks lets you know exactly what they’re eating. The biggest struggle that most parents face is getting their children to eat more vegetables. A 2013 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that adding herbs or spices to a reduced-fat dip increased a child’s willingness to eat veggies. The portion-controlled 3 1/2 tablespoon dips served to the kids had 50 calories, 4 grams of fat and 90 milligrams of sodium. Preschool children ages 3 to 5 years told researchers from the Center for Childhood Obesity Research at Penn State University that they liked veggies more when paired with a favorite flavored dip compared with eating a veggie without a dip or with a plain dip.
