Recycling changes hands By CarOL BrOOKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The company providing recycling to Jamestown has been sold to a new owner. Waste Industries of High Point acquired North Davidson Garbage Service, Inc. on Aug. 1. The Town of Jamestown posted a notice on Facebook on Aug. 14. “It has been a privilege to provide the curbside collection of waste and bring recycling to our area,” a letter on the website read. “Our recycling facility will be back in operation in the next coming months and will sustain the ability to recycle the area’s materials.” The Everhart family-

owned North Davidson Garbage Service has been in operation for almost 50 years. “As customers, what can you expect from this transition? You can be confident Waste Industries will continue to provide you with the same dependable, quality service you’ve come to rely on from NDGS,” the letter stated. “There will be no interruption in your current services.” Waste Industries has been serving residential homes since 1970. Jamestown Public Servic-

es Director Paul Blanchard said he was available to help with any problems with recycling collection. He can be reached at 336454-1138 or pblanchard@ jamestown-nc.gov. A massive fire on Aug. 31, 2018, at North Davidson’s plant in Lexington destroyed a building that housed recyclable materials. The Town of Jamestown used the company for recycling and was in the process of switching to container recycling from bags. There was little to no disruption of service to the town, how-

ever. Trucks were on the road the Monday following the fire, including those on the Jamestown route. Other recycling centers assisted North Davidson by taking in recycling material collected by NDGS. Damages to North Davidson’s 54,600-square-foot operations base on Old U.S. Hwy. 52 were estimated to run $6 million or more and it could take a year for the company to rebuild. About 80 tons of recyclable materials were involved. Firefighters from 17 area departments responded to the blaze, which began around 6:45 p.m., after employees had left. The fire is believed to have started spontaneously in the piles of material.

Committee to plot Jamestown’s future By CarOL BrOOKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The future of a municipality is guided by a comprehensive plan. It provides direction about development decisions, often protecting valuable resources, shaping the appearance of the community and promoting economic development. A comprehensive plan steering committee is charged with determining what the town’s needs are and compiling the data into the final plan. Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson recently asked for volunteers to be on the committee, which is made up of local citizens who know the town and its needs. As of this writing, seven residents have submitted applications for the committee. Five were to be appointed by the Town Council on Aug. 20. Members selected for the committee from the Planning Board from Jamestown are Eddie Oakley and Ed Stafford and from the extraterritorial jurisdiction area, Sherrie Richmond and Steve Monroe. The Council was to also confirm the Planning Board see future, Page 3

Hurricane Hazel By Linda WiLLard Jamestown friends meeting On Friday, October 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel, the first and hopefully last category 4 hurricane hit costal North Carolina bringing death and destruction to the coast of North Carolina. Hurricane Hazel also brought tragedy and death to High Point, North Carolina. Hurricane Hazel made landfall near Calabash, North Carolina. The first indication of trouble came on October 5, 1954 with the formation of a tropical cycle about fifty miles east of the island of Grenada. By October 9, 1954, Hurricane Hazel had strengthened to a category 4 storm with maximum winds of 135 miles per hour. On October 11, 1954, Hurricane Hazel hit the island of Haiti leaving hundred dead. Not only was Hurricane Hazel a category 4 storm, she was also very unpredictable making it difficult to forecast her expected path. Landfall occurred on the North Carolina/South Carolina border near Calabash, North Carolina with winds estimated to have been as high as 150 miles per hour. There is never a good time for a hurricane to strike, however, Friday, October 15, 1954 was the worst possible time for a hurricane to make landfall. The night of October 15, 1954 was a full moon and the lunar high tide bringing the highest tide of the year. At 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 14, 1954, the United States Weather Bureau (presentday National Weather Ser-

Three couples from High Point, North Carolina were at Ocean Isle, North Carolina enjoying the beach and a having a house-warming beach party. Only two of the six people from High Point, North Carolina would return home and live to tell the harrowing story of Hurricane Hazel. J. Elwood Cox, his wife Louise Lee Cox, Frank W. Armfield, his wife Virginia Fraley Armfield, and John A. Hart, Jr., and his wife Margaret York Hart were all at Ocean Isle Beach for a week-end of fun and sun. These six were among the last people stuck on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. The three couples soon realized that they were in trouble, they went to the nearby home of a local resident, Sherman Register, to ask for assistance and direction as to what they should do. Register got everyone in his pickup truck and headed west toward Halfway Hills, the highest point on the island, and hopefully to safety. They drove as far as they could before parking the truck facing southwest. As they looked down, they could see houses break in

The water continued to rise and the truck began to rock. The water reached the men’s belts. By Saturday, October 16, 1954, it was known and reported in High Point, North Carolina that J. Elwood Cox, II, Frank W. Armfield and his wife had all died in the storm. Louise Lee Cox was listed as missing. Her body would later be found. Hart and his

wife were somehow able to reach safety and return to High Point, North Carolina to tell the harrowing story of Hurricane Hazel. From The Front Comprehensive plans guide a town’s future By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com In order for a municipality to function and grow, there must be a plan. A comprehensive plan is a local government’s guide to the physical, social and economic development of the town. It is a reflection of the values, dreams and ideas of the community. The plan also collects town demographics, such as population density, age distribution, ethnicity, types of households, income levels, education and work force. Jamestown’s first comprehensive plan, then called the Land Development Plan, was published in 1964. It must have worked fine for the town, because there wasn’t an update until December 2007, 43 years after the original. However, Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson said there had been several other plans over the years that could be called a comprehensive plan including a March 1997 report by the North Carolina Urban Design Assistance Team. The document pointed out several projects that could be implemented. Some of

“Someone from the Alight Foundation spoke at one of our meetings,” said Melissa Moore, president of the Woman’s Club of Southwest Guilford. “When we asked how we could help, she told us about the Comfort Pillow project.” On Aug. 14, nine members of WCSWG gathered at Gracie Lynn Sewing & Crafts Center in High Point to create pillows for the Alight organization. The owner of the Gracie Lynn Sewing & Crafts Center donated not only the space in which to work, but the backing material and stuffing for the pillows as well. For three hours, the women cut, sewed and stuffed the rectangleshaped pillows, working in assembly-line fashion. The resulting pillows were stuffed full, but still soft. “Our goal was to make as many pillows as we could in that time and we completed 65,” Moore said. “We also had lots of fun bonding with each other.” “If we decide to do it again, we might work on the project in the evening or on a Saturday morning to give other members a chance to participate,” member Laura Gulledge said. The Woman’s Club of Southwest Guilford, which started in 2013, is a sister club to Sedgefield Woman’s Club and a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. It encompasses more of the southwest area of the county including High Point and Jamestown. “Our members do not come from a specific area and we are always looking for women with a servant’s heart who would like to

the projects that have been completed include development of Gannaway Street, parking, a downtown park, a commons area at the Jamestown Public Library, realignment of Ragsdale and Dillon roads at the Main Street intersection, sidewalks, entrance signs, pedestrian bridge (currently in the planning stage), sidewalk enhancements, Main Street beautification, and other projects. A Downtown Marketing Study was done in 2008 and the major point of that study was that the town needed more restaurants and bars. This obviously has been accomplished. Planning departments know 43 years is too long to go between updates and Johnson says now it is time to look at the 2007 Land Development Plan. This time, he’s calling it a comprehensive plan. “The economy has changed, the business mix has changed and residential needs have changed,” Johnson said. “The plan will set short-term, medium-term, and long-range goals.” Johnson also pointed to the areas annexed by Jamestown since the last plan, namely, the Jamestown

Parkway/Guilford College Road/Gate City Boulevard area. He also noted that the bypass currently under construction would bring development opportunities for retail and residential. These are things to consider in a comprehensive plan. The plan will look at the capability of the town’s water, wastewater and transportation system to service new areas of town as well as environmental concerns. These plans will be studied and used for the Capital Improvement Plan, which lists must-do, should-do and could-do items and is submitted with each year’s budget.. One item that has been on the CIP for several years just might see construction this year – the East Main Street/Lydia sidewalk project. A 2014 plan to update the Comprehensive Plan included 10 top issues facing the town: improving downtown retail in appearance, quality and variety, amenities including the public library and YMCA, golf course, parking, expanding sidewalks, open space including parks and recreation, historic preservation and resources, relief of traffic congestion, planned growth

and development, and promoting Jamestown with a vision and marketing. These will be addressed in the new plan. Once a comprehensive plan is established, the land development ordinances, first created in 2009, must be looked at to establish compatibility. Johnson said the ordinances are continually being updated, the last being in May 2018. The Town Council discussed a text amendment to one ordinance on Aug. 20. The ordinances address building sizes, sidewalk changes and limited agriculture, to name a few. “The Comprehensive Plan is the guiding document that community leaders refer to when making decisions about zoning and other laws that guide how our town will develop in the future,” Johnson said. “The Land Development Ordinances are the rules.” When completed, the Comprehensive Plan will combine information from other plans like the Deep River paddle trail plan, pedestrian transportation plan, and the 1996 UDAT plan, among others.

be part of the group,” Gulledge said. “We enjoy each other’s company while also giving back to the community,” Moore noted. A few projects that WCSWG support include Feeding Lisa’s Kids, the Community Garden at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, purchasing Christmas presents for different Angel Tree children, Family Services of the Pied-

mont and Hospice of the Piedmont. They also take snacks to the Cone Health and Medical Center on Highway 68. representatives on Aug. 20. ETJ representation is vital to a committee such as this because Jamestown has jurisdiction over neighboring areas such as Cedarwood that are not within the town limits. The town provides some services to these areas. Steering Committee members will be charged with identifying issues and concerns of the town and residents, with developing a vision for the plan and setting new goals and objectives. They will also have input on vetting the consulting firm hired to assist with the process. Members will be speaking to residents of their neighborhoods to get them involved in the planning of the Comprehensive Plan, providing input and attending several public meetings. Johnson hopes residents will attend the public meetings and voice their opinions and concerns so they will not be surprised later when things happen. He pointed to the 2009 Land Development Ordinances, saying that the meetings then were not well attended and many residents, especially those in the original Forestdale neighborhood, were dismayed to learn of rezoning changes when the plan came out. These changes came to the forefront when a fast-food restaurant wanted to locate on West Main Street, across from Jamestown Elementary School, where the Potter house once stood. Johnson believes that if residents had attended the public meetings, they would have learned of the zoning change to allow commercial development in that area. The Comprehensive Plan update could take 18 months to complete, but it might be longer. “We want to get it right,” Johnson said.

Rainey and Doak came to Southwest at the same time and worked closely together to change a losing team to a winning one. The Southwest team has experienced an eight-win season for the past five years and made the playoffs each year. Growing up in the Greenville, N.C., area, Doak played football during his middle and high school years. After graduation, he worked as a mechanic for several years until the head mechanic urged him to sign an application to East Carolina University, telling Doak he needed to be in college. “I majored in exercise and sports science and minored in geology,” Doak said. “I am the only one in my family with a four-year degree. “I knew I would teach and coach. Coaching has been the driving force in all I did.” He was teaching earth science and coaching at a middle school when his coaching career began to move upward. Before coming to Southwest, Doak worked for 18 years at four different schools – moving from position coach to coordinator to head coach. “Moving up is every coach’s desire,” he said. After taking the job as football coach at CATA, Doak and his family planned to move to Monroe. When his house in this area would not sell, Doak made the long commute to Central Academy for the first semester of the 2018-2019 school year. “The day we were supposed to sign papers on our house the buyer backed out,” Doak said. “When I got the call from Coach Rainey, I knew that was a Godsend. He wanted to put us someplace else.” The irony of Doak’s job at Southwest is he wanted to be a cowboy his entire life. His dad raised cattle at one time and was always known by the nickname Cowboy. “As a kid all I wanted to be was a cowboy like John Wayne and my dad. It is funny that I have ended up at Southwest (whose mascot is a cowboy) and now I am a Cowboy.” Doak noted that he always dresses in green or clothing that sports a Southwest logo – even at church. He feels a coach must represent his team all the time. Doak currently teaches earth science, weight training and freshman focus – a life-skills class. Although he has coached other sports in the past, he enjoys the challenge of football. “I like the adversity you face and trying to figure out how not to lose,” he said. “Football is a team sport, but it is one-on-one when you are facing the opposing player. You learn many life skills that go with you forever.” Doak is looking forward to a winning season at Southwest. “I always expect to win every game,” he said with a laugh. “We have all the tools in place that we could do that. If we cannot win, we will certainly compete. You continue to move forward with each win or loss.”

Busting a cat's bitting behavior By saM MaZZOtta Paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our male cat “Buster” is celebrating his third birthday. While he’s a good kitty most of the time, he has these moments where he decides to “attack” and take a bite out of my arm or leg. He’s not a cuddler, and when being petted he only permits me to pet a few times and then snips at me to signal that’s enough. When he attacks, I’ve tried spraying him with a squirt bottle or distracting him with toys —which works for a few minutes. He is declawed, and I wonder if this is behind his behavior, but I’m not sure what else to do. Any suggestions? — Martha L., via email DEAR MARTHA: I feel your frustration. Nipping and biting are generally dominance behaviors, and there are a few options for curbing them. If Buster has not been neutered, consider doing so as

this can reduce aggression in male cats. Make sure you’re not inadvertently rewarding Buster for his behavior. If you sometimes give him a toy right after he attacks, he remembers that attacking you got him a toy he enjoys — so he’ll do it again! Instead, hiss at him or use the squirt bottle. Give him a toy when he interacts less aggressively, such as meowing or tapping you with his paw. Observe what he does after he nips or attacks. Does he sit, waiting for something? Does he meow and try to lead you somewhere, like his food bowl? Note the times of day that he exhibits these behaviors. Again, don’t reward dominance behaviors. Immediately hiss at nipping or biting. Reward calm behavior. It will take several tries, but create that pattern and Buster eventually will get it. epstein was allowed to game the system By riCH LOWry The Jeffrey Epstein case establishes beyond a doubt that if you’re a sexual predator, it pays to be a rich and connected sexual predator. Epstein, now dead of an apparent suicide before his accusers had their day in court, worked the system and benefited from advantages and breaks unimaginable to anyone who didn’t jet around with influential friends. The multimillionaire financier who lived in Palm Beach, Florida, and Manhattan, N.Y., used his resources to build a network of sexual predation and then used his resources to escape meaningful legal punishment. Even after registering as a sex offender, he lived a life of ease and glamour unavailable to even most of the 1 percent. Epstein was the Jay Gatsby of sexual abuse, relying on his wealth to perfume over what should have been the overwhelming smell of sulfur. He hired a highly credentialed, aggressive legal team that wooed and overawed prosecutors who were supposed to hold him accountable for his crimes. A decade ago, the state prosecutor in Florida took a pass, and former Trump Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, the U.S. attorney for Southern Florida at the time, applied the minimal possible sanction while affording Epstein every possible consideration. In a letter explaining his handling of the case, Acosta described “a year-long assault on the prosecution and the prosecutors.” The proper response of an office invested with the awesome powers of government, arrayed against a lowlife and his hired guns, should have been to double down. Instead, Acosta’s office buckled. If any of the nameless victims had been rich or famous themselves and able to hire

an Alan Dershowitz or a Jay Lefkowitz, the result surely would have been different. A couple of years ago, Taylor Swift pursued, on principle, an assault case against a man who groped her at a meet-and-greet, and won a symbolic $1. But none of the Epstein’s victims were anything like Taylor Swift. They were selected for abuse — because they were vulnerable. And failed by their government — because they were vulnerable. Having minimized Epstein’s offense in Florida, his lawyers got busy minimizing the consequences. They somehow convinced a prosecutor in the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to petition a judge to lower Epstein’s sex-offender status. The shocked judge rejected it out of hand. This held true to the pattern — all mistakes always worked in Epstein’s favor. It was a mistake that Epstein got to leave 12 hours a day, six days a week, while briefly in jail in Palm Beach so he could pursue his “work” (including bilking one of his clients). It was a mistake that New York City police didn’t enforce the requirement that Epstein check in every 90 days as required under his sex-offender status. All the while, Epstein continued to socialize with fancy people, buying his way into their company and entertaining the great and the good at his New York City mansion. It was only when the Miami Herald unearthed the enormity of his crimes that Epstein’s world began to unravel. It shouldn’t be possible for a hideous monster to game the American system of justice, but it’s exactly what Jeffrey Epstein did, from loathsome beginning to unforgivable end. Watermelon sandwiches are late summer treat By donna erickson donna’s day: creative family fun When Joani Deuel’s two grandkids, Hunter and Parker, come to visit in Dublin, California, they’ve learned to expect the unexpected from a grandmother who absolutely loves to have a surprise up her sleeve. The latest caper appeared at lunchtime when she said, “Come and get your watermelon sandwiches!” “I didn’t think it was really true,” 12-year-old Hunter later told me. “Grandma invited us over for soup and sandwiches, but watermelon sandwiches? I was thinking grilled cheese.” I tasted Joani’s talkedabout creation on a recent visit to the West Coast, and just like her grandkids, I gave the innovative recipe an enthusiastic thumbs up. Served with zucchini soup and a simple bowl of fresh fruit topped with yogurt, watermelon sandwiches were memorable and definitely worth repeating. Now, back on my own turf in Minnesota, our family has already made watermelon sandwiches for our neighborhood National Night Out potluck and family suppers, and I’ll be serving them up next week for a mom’s back-to-school gettogether.

By keith roach, M.D. to your good health DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chest-clutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? — J.

Try this simple, easy-toprepare recipe with your kids, and get ready for those surprised looks from your guests when you serve a curious platter of watermelon sandwiches. Here’s what you’ll need for 8 open-faced sandwiches: 4 ciabatta sandwich rolls sliced in half 1 handful of fresh mint stripped from the stems and chopped 1 8-ounce tube goat cheese 8 thin slices of chilled watermelon with seeds and rind removed Cracked pepper and salt to taste

Assemble in 3 easy steps: 1. Crumble cold goat cheese in a bowl. It works best chilled. Lightly combine with chopped mint. 2. Brush both sides of the sliced ciabatta rolls and grill or toast lightly. 3. Spread the cheese and mint mixture on the cut side of each ciabatta half. Add salt and pepper according to taste. Cut watermelon slices in triangles and stack 2 triangles on each half. (For a fun twist, Joani suggests letting kids cut the watermelon into triangles with kitchen scissors instead of with a knife. When assembled, you may wish use the scissors to cut the sandwich half in half

again for smaller portions.) COMING UP: Sunday, Sept. 8, is designated as Grandparents’ Day. Send a card or letter, or invite nearby grandparents over for a fun get-together. Stir up your own surprises with your kids for a memorable multigenerational gathering. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Are Canadian drugs in our future? By matilda charles senior news line If you watch the news, you might have seen there’s a proposal underway that would allow states to import prescription drugs from Canada, where costs are lower. Drugs are cheaper in other countries because

Confusion over women’s heart attack symptoms

their governments control the prices. As it now stands, we can go across the border and bring back a three-month supply of our medications for personal use, but there are pitfalls. Technically it’s illegal, but it’s often overlooked at the border. Going to Canada for your drugs

can be inconvenient, and travel costs can eat into the savings gained by buying lower-cost prescriptions. If you try to buy by mail, you don’t really know who’s on the other end — the drugs could be counterfeit and actually from a different country. Then there’s the cost of shipping and the exchange rate. Here are some things to keep in mind while this proposal is being hashed out: * Canadians aren’t too happy about it, because they already have shortages. * The U.S. Food and Drug Administration isn’t happy about it, because the FDA thinks it’s protecting us from bad drugs. * The drug companies in the U.S. definitely aren’t happy about it. The drug

industry can do what it likes, including passing along the costs of research and development to us, the consumer. Medicare, for example, isn’t allowed to negotiate for lower prices. If your drugs are expensive, talk to your doctor. There might be a suitable generic. Price shop at various pharmacies. Call the manufacturer and ask if it has coupons or a program with reduced costs. Ask your pharmacist for the lowest possible discounted price. If you’re on Medicare Part D, be sure you’re using a preferred pharmacy. Look online at www.goodrx.com for low cost drugs near you. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the news.

DEAR J.: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise — even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs — is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? — E.M. DEAR E.M.: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. But with a fistful of infinity stones, can he even be defeated? In an impressive end to the Infinity Saga, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have managed to balance six or more storylines, nail down some satisfying character development and effectively resolve a 22-film collection in one — admittedly long but eminently worth it — movie that will leave hard-core fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe content.

Finding Steve McQueen (R) — This is not a Steve McQueen biopic, if that’s what you were expecting. You could be forgiven, as the lead, played by “Vikings” star Travis Fimmel, is enamored of the actor, striving to emulate his looks and prowess behind the wheel of a car. Which brings us to a story that’s told in flashback and ripped from the crazy but (mostly) true history books. Back-to-school lunches that won't bust budget By Angela shelf medearis kitchen diva Back-to-school shopping can blow up a household budget. Sometimes the only way a family can save money is by monitoring what it spends each week on groceries. I’ve got some great ideas for starting off the new school year by shopping on a budget for your weekly work-and-school lunches. Try using some of these tips each week, and soon you should see some relief in your grocery bills while creating healthy, food-safe lunches for the whole family! * Invest in a good lunch container: Choose an insulated bag and freezer packs to keep food at a safe temperature. * Use washable and reusable containers: Avoid using plastic sandwich baggies. Buy containers in a variety of sizes to fit your lunchbox needs. * Buy in bulk: Avoid singleserve packaging. You save money when you buy food in bulk and pack it yourself into single servings. Buy a large container of yogurt or pudding, and use 4-ounce containers to pack your own. Buy a block of cheese and cut it into cubes or shred it. Buy crackers in boxes, rather than individual packages. * Do it yourself: Look beyond lunch meat. Slice your own meat or grilled chicken breast and cut it into strips or cubes. Avoid prepackaged lunches, since they are high-priced. * Send in leftovers: Invest in a good insulated food container to keep food warm. Homemade soup is always a good option. * Buy what’s on sale and use

coupons: Get whatever is on sale each week and work it into a menu. * Buy store-brand food: And be sure to compare unit prices. * Look high and low: Bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves, not at eye level. * Plan ahead: Make a list when you go to the store. The more time you spend in a store, the more money you spend. * Include the five food groups: A healthy lunch should contain foods from each of the five food groups: carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Choose whole-grain products like bread, tortillas, pita bread, bagels or whole-grain crackers. These are more nutritious, have more fiber, vitamins and minerals; and keep blood sugar steady for optimal learning. * Select protein foods wisely: Use lean meat like chicken or turkey breast, hard-boiled eggs, tuna packed in water, beans or peanut butter. Protein in every meal helps keep blood sugar steady. * Buy fruits and vegetables in season and serve them creatively: Examples include baby carrots with yogurt dip or other cut vegetables with low-fat dip or hummus. * Shelve sliced bread: When making sandwiches, use wholegrain bagels, whole-grain pita pockets or whole-wheat tortillas. * Rethink side items: Instead of that bag of chips, choose carrots sticks, celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, apple slices with peanut butter, fruit salad, whole fruit, raisins or pretzels. * Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy: Yogurt, milk and cheese are great calcium and protein sources. * Think beyond the cookie: For dessert, try whole-grain graham

crackers, ginger snaps, raisins, unsweetened applesauce, homemade muffins or fresh fruit. * Avoid drinks with calories and no nutrients: Pick a beverage that hydrates, like water, or choose low-fat or fat-free milk for additional protein, calcium and vitamin D. * Add some fun touches: The traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich can become pretty boring. Get a couple of cookie cutters and have kids cut the sandwich into different shapes. * Include the kids: Take them along when grocery shopping. Let them pick one new fruit or vegetable each week that they would like to try. Then let them help prepare and pack their lunch. Try this money-saving recipe for my Rainbow Lunch Wraps. Purchase premade hummus and

1. Spread hummus evenly over each tortilla. Layer each tortilla with equal amounts of coleslaw mix or the sliced vegetables, onion and cucumber slices. Drizzle with vinaigrette. 2. Roll up tightly, slice diagonally and place in a reusable container for lunch or in the refrigerator if preparing ahead of time. Makes 2 wraps.

coleslaw mix to save time. You also can stretch your food dollars by serving any leftover hummus with the sliced vegetables as a snack, and combining any leftover coleslaw mix with a creamy lowfat dressing as a side salad. RAINBOW LUNCH WRAPS 4 tablespoons hummus 2 (8 inch) whole-wheat tortillas 1/2 cup shredded coleslaw veggie mix or any combination of thinly sliced crudite, like carrots, celery, zucchini or red bell pepper sticks (like those used for dipping) 3 tablespoons finely chopped sweet onion 6 cucumber rounds, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons balsamic vinaigrette
