see HIsTORy, PAGe 2 As a youth, Bob Marsh had lots of exposure with the circus. His dad took him to see the Sparks Circus, a small tent show performing in Greensboro. Through a growing friendship between his dad and the general manger of the circus, Marsh was included in Sunday dinners in the circus dining tent. He also got to ride elephants around the circus grounds. By the time Marsh was in middle school, he knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up – a circus“Someclown.clowns are born and some are manufactured. I was born a clown,” Marsh said with a twinkle in his eye. “Comedy is one of the hardest circus skills to teach. It comes naturally from within. At the conclusion of other acts there is obligatory applause, but when a clown performs there is laughter throughout his act. Laughter comes straight from the heart. I prefer laughter over applause any day.” As Marsh got older, he spent time backstage before a show and would attend the performances at night. In 1954 he had the privilege to meet the famous clown Emmett Kelly and watch as he applied his makeup. Marsh participated in musical dramas in high school and did some clowning. After graduating from Guilford College in 1959 with a degree in economics, he spent 26 hours on a Greyhound bus traveling to Sarasota, Fla., in hopes of joining Ringling

When the new pedestrian bridge over Koonce City Lake is completed, it will not only connect the High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center, but also will allow users to connect with some of Jamestown’s history.Only during low water level periods, however. The pedestrian bridge runs roughly parallel to Penny Road as it crosses the lake. Hidden below the waters between the two bridges is the foundation of the home of Pennsylvania native and Quaker James Mendenhall, namesake of the town. When walking to the park from the Environmental Center and when the water is down in the lake, look to the small cove to the right and you might be able to see bricks and even a concrete staircase along the bank. The foundation stones are also visible from Penny Road. To construct the City Lake Park in the 1920s and create a reservoir for High Point, it was necessary to construct a dam on Deep River. The damming of the water created the lake but unfortunately, destroyed any structures that were in the way. That meant saying goodbye to not only Mendenhall’s home but also his mill. James Mendenhall (1718-1781) was the grandfather of Richard Mendenhall (1778-1851) whose home still stands on West Main Street across from the entrance to City Lake Park. In 1762, James received a land grant of 204 acres from one of the Lord’s Proprietors, John, Earl Granville, and constructed not only a home, but both a gristmill and sawmill on what was then the west fork of Deep River, just slightly north of what would become the original town of Jamestown. A date stone from the chimney was salvaged before the river was dammed and is now on display at the Mendenhall Homeplace. When James moved to Georgia in 1775, he left the property to his son George, Richard’s father. George’s son, George Cameron, became the third and final Mendenhall generation to live in the Morehouse.ofthe foundations of James’ home can still be found on the bank between the lake and the service entrance to the park. It is believed that during the Revolutionary War, Gen. George Cornwallis’ troops stopped at the mill, commandeering the grain — without pay, of course. The troops were on their way to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in Greensboro. In 1975, John Bauckman, then director of the High Point Museum, lead an archeological expedition at the site, specifically looking for the mill foundation and some of the gears. Photos at the Museum indicate foundation stones were found but appear to be farther inland from the lake.

Dennis during the aug. 15 meeting of the Jamestown Rotary Club, the group presented Lisa Hawley with a check for $13,000 to be used for her non-profit Feeding Lisa’s Kids. The money was raised during the club’s yearly Bow stafford Classic golf tournament. Hawley, who has been subsidizing school children and their families with food boxes for several years, recently learned her mother had once been a child in need of food. “I did not know this when I started the non-profit,” Hawley said. “I saw a need after visiting my children’s school and wanted to help.” Pictured left to right are Lisa Hawley, don dale, Jamestown Rotary president, and Martin senell.

“This will be 5,000-6,000 sq. ft. of Class A medical office space,” Joyce said. He believes the renovation will be completed at the end of 2022. It will be the company’s 18th location in North Carolina with the majority in Guilford County. Total construction cost is estimated at $1,066,638. Bethany Medical, P.A., is an independent sister company of Peters Development, LLC, which purchased the 6.36-acre Forestdale Plaza at 108 W. Main St. July 8 of last year for $6.95 million. A fast-growing group of medical offices will open in Forestdale Plaza, commonly known as the Food Lion Shopping Center, by the end of the year. Bethany Medical, based in High Point, will offer primary and urgent care along with screening, diagnostic services and other specialties in new offices on the eastern side of the shopping center. There will be approximately 30 new jobs, including five providers, at the new location, according to John Joyce, public relations director of Bethany Medical.Theoffice will use all of the vacant space in the building where Subway is located, according to Dan Hill, vice president and director of real estate for Peters Development, which owns the shopping center. It is not clear if Subway will remain in that location. Hill could not be reached for clarification.Theother tenant of the building, Sophisticuts, recently moved to a larger space beside Food Lion, the anchor tenant of Forestdale Plaza.

Following a dream

Marsh never forgot his dream to be a circus clown, and he and his wife Judy made a pact that when the youngest of their three chil dren graduated from col lege, he would follow that dream.“We decided to do what God put us on earth to do – make people laugh in the circus,” Marsh said. Meanwhile, Marsh did guest appearances with Ringling Bros. and net worked with circus per formers through the years. When he was 62, Marsh researched a number of circuses and joined the Kelly Miller Circus based in Hugo, Okla. The small tent show had a great repu tation in the circus world and soon Marsh and his wife were moving every day during the performance season and returning to their home base in High Point until the show was ready to travel again. “Because of my educa tion and ability to commu nicate, I was employed as an advance clown,” Marsh said. “It was a marketing position. I preceded the cir cus to create awareness that it was coming. I performed in schools, hospitals and other locations and did interviews to publicize the show.”Marsh, a.k.a. Mr. Jiggs, performed as a circus clown for approximately 15 years including as an advance and show clown with the Clyde Beatty Cole Bros. Circus and during the winter with top acts from around the world at Circus Sarasota in Florida. Before any performance it took him an hour to get into costume.“Clowning is a serious business,” Marsh said. “It takes exceptional creativ ity. Silly clowns appeal to children, but good clowns appeal to adults.” When he retired from clowning the couple returned to their home in High Point, but his days as a clown and his time with the circus remains para mount in his heart. During a recent meeting of the Jamestown Rotary Club, Marsh shared some of his experiences as a clown as well as highlights about the circus in general. “The golden age of the circus was between 18701930,” Marsh said. “People had never seen anything like it. It carried a place of honor in the entertainment industry and gave people the opportunity to see wild animals up close. “The circus was never a kiddie show, but a family show. It appealed to all ages and never required cen sorship. It did not change much over the years, just got bigger and better.”

Photo by Norma B. Dennis Marsh explains that although not sharp, the pointed end of the elephant stick could be used to direct the movement of elephants during training and perfor mances.

HI

Marsh noted that people who wanted to be part of the circus life had to be part gypsy because they were on the road eight to nine months a year. Although alcohol was always a prob lem for some working peo ple at the circus, it was not as much so for the perform ers.“Most circus people were well educated, good solid people,” he said. “Circus families became neighbors. They lived and worked together and children had to listen to their parents because the circus could be a dangerous place.” The animal acts were often considered the high light of a show. Circus animals, especially the elephants, tended to be extremely smart. The ele phants were most always females and grouped in twos everywhere they went. Although not group ori ented, cats were easy to train, as well, and often became attached to their trainers. Leopards were the exception and had to be watched carefully. The most dangers animals were bears, which could for get their entire training if aroused.Unfortunately, high oper ating costs and the decline of ticket sales made the cir cus an unsustainable busi ness. After a 146-year run, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus made its last stop in the Piedmont Triad at the Greensboro Coliseum in February 2017, and held its last per formance in May of that year.“After working with the circus for all the years I did, I can say I have never been around anything as well organized,” Marsh said. “The life of a circus clown was a tough existence, but I loved every bit of it. My wife and I enjoyed the life style together.”

Peters Development has purchased several smaller shopping centers in High Point in recent years. On Aug. 18, Betha ny Medical Center, P.A., requested the Guilford County Board of Commis sioners apply for a N.C. Department of Commerce Rural Building Reuse and Infrastructure Grant appli cation for nearly $600,000 for renovation of the For estdale Plaza location. One criteria of the grant was that the company “meet or exceed the county average annual wage.” The average annual wage for the 30 new positions will be $54,453, compared to the county average of $53,994. The request was approved and Commissioners noted renovation of the existing vacant building will create new, full-time jobs. It now goes to the N.C. Department of Commerce for approval. According to informa tion from the Commission ers’ meeting, the grant, if approved by the Depart ment of Commerce, would be pass-through funding in the form of a loan to Peters Development, for givable upon meeting the investment and job creation requirements. The funds would reimburse the proper ty owner for eligible project expenses contingent upon performance review and verification by the Depart ment of Commerce. Peters Development is required to supply a 5 percent match. If approved, the Board of Commissioners would have to amend the county budget. M ed IC a L CON t INU e D F r OM F r ON t

A historical marker erected several years ago by the Historic Jamestown Society notes the location of the home. The inscription reads: “Built by James Mendenhall, for whom Jamestown was reportedly named. His family moved here from Chester, Pennsylvania, and built the house, a grist mill, and saw mill on the banks of the Deep River. The last Mendenhall occupant was Del phina Mendenhall, widow of George C. Mendenhall, James’ grandson. After her death in 1881, ownership passed through a succession of millwrights. The site is beneath City Lake, near the Penny Road Bridge.”So,when you’re walking on the new pedestrian bridge in upcoming months, stop along the way and look toward the spot where the James Mendenhall house was located. Think about the history of the town and what the family has meant to it. s TORy
