Jones enjoys new athletic director role By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Ragsdale High School’s new athletic director, Deborah Jones, is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, and a big fan of all the sports teams in that city. So she was excited to learn that one of her favorite players on the Cleveland Browns football team was not only a graduate of Ragsdale High School, but would be having a sports camp at the school this summer. Even though Jones’ first official day at Ragsdale was not until July 1, she made it a point to visit Larry Ogunjobi’s free football camp on June 8. Ogunjobi, Ragsdale class of 2012, is a defensive tackle for the Browns. “One of the things that was the

highlight of my summer, and a kick-start to starting here at Ragsdale, was the camp,” Jones said. “I wasn’t aware that he went here. He’s one of the big three on the front line [with the Browns].” She got a picture with Ogunjobi and Myles Garrett, another tackle with the Browns who came with Ogunjobi. Her family was also able to visit. “We’re diehard Cleveland Browns fans.” Jones visited the school several times after she was chosen in early May to take over for Brian Herndon, who retired the end of the school year after eight years as athletic director and a total of 30 years at Ragsdale. Jones comes to Ragsdale from Page High School in Greensboro where she has over 20 years of

offs in basketball for 16 straight years. Jones’ family moved to the area for her junior year of high school and she and her twin sister graduated from Southwest Guilford High School. From there, she went to St. Andrews University in Laurinburg and played on the school’s basketball team for four years as a scholarship point guard. “Our parents helped us have a true passion for sports,” she said. “I literally played everything. In high school I played basketball, softball, volleyball and ran track.” Before her stint at Page, she taught physical education for six years at Southeast Middle School and began her coaching career at the same time at Southeast High School. Although Jones claims basket-

ball as her favorite sport, she also loves football and spent several years on the Carolina Cougars women’s professional football team after college. “I was a wide receiver and led the team in receiving yards and catches,” she said of her first year with the team. “The second year I ended up being the quarterback because the starting quarterback was pregnant. “I’m glad I did it and I’m so glad I didn’t get hurt.” She believes her true passion is as an athletic director. “I couldn’t see giving up coaching basketball but asked Coach Lee [at Page] if he needed any help as an assistant athletic director. He ended up retiring last year see jones, page 2

The fact is, however, that the company is already serving customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Repairs to Gateway Education Center begin

When parents of students at Gateway Education Center were notified by phone in mid-April that the school would close at the end of the school year, they were not only shocked, but also dismayed. “We were told the school was closing for facility reasons,” said Gateway PTA President Dania Ermentrout. “There are 55 schools with

total facility scores lower than Gateway. Based on reports, our school is not first in line for repairs. I do not know why we were singled out in this way.” Guilford County Schools Superintendent Sharon Contreras maintained that her concern has always been for the safety of medicallyfragile students. The school, which was built in 1983, serves students with physical and intellectual disabilities. The building also houses four infant/toddler class-

rooms that are supported by the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association. Ongoing structural problems referred to by the superintendent included water leaks, windows with broken seals that trapped moisture in between the glass panes, pest control, raw sewage, clogged toilets and a nonfunctional therapy pool. After learning of the school board’s intention to close the school, parents and see center, page 10

that they needed more flour and other supplies and had asked the men in the rear party to return to the home of his friend, Captain William Russell to obtain the necessary supplies and then catch up with the main party. The men in the rear party obtained the flour and possibly other supplies and were making their way to the point where they would meet the main party and continue on to Kentucky. Unknown to the men in the rear party, a group of Native Americans, possibly Shawnee and Cherokee, had been very quietly following them. The rear party made camp for the night with Boone and his companions sitting around a blazing campfire. The men heard what they thought was wolves howling, but may have been the Native Americans. The Mendenhalls, who were not accustomed to the noises in the back woods, expressed some fear. Crabtree, a backwoodsman, laughed at their fear and told them that there would be such

sounds when they reached Kentucky. On the morning of October 10, 1773, the Native Americans attacked the rear party. Russell was shot in both hips making it impossible for him to escape. Boone was also shot in both hips. Boone recognized one of the Native Americans as Big Jim, a Shawnee warrior who had been a guest in his parents’ home and pretended to be a friend of the family. Boone implored Big Jim to spare his life based on friendship and past favors. Boone was tortured by having his fingernails and toenails pulled off. At some point, Boone begged Big Jim to go ahead and kill him rather than continue the torture. Both Richard and John Mendenhall were killed. The boy named Drake was also killed. Adam, the slave, escaped unhurt and hid in some driftwood on the bank of a nearby creek. Crabtree was wounded but escaped to the nearest settlement. Charles, the other slave was older and less able to escape. He

and instead of being an assistant, Matthew Harder and I became co-athletic directors.” During the summer, Jones worked hard to make certain student-athletes were eligible to play their sport, making certain all the concussion paperwork and physicals were in proper form. “We had lots of things going on this summer,” she said. “I get to focus and celebrate all sports now as an athletic director [rather than as a coach]. Throughout her coaching career, it’s not a particular game that stands out in Jones’ memory but, rather, building relationships with her players, going to their weddings and celebrating the milestones in their lives, and continuing the relationship to this day. “I tell everyone, ‘Be humble.’ That’s huge,” she said, noting that it’s easy to get caught up in the moment of a spectacular play and celebrate, but it’s not just the player who makes the good play, but also the teammates who made it possible. “It’s the team you play for because you want to advance it to the state tournament. I think athletes who make it the team concept over individual concept always achieve more.” One of her goals as athletic director is to make certain the students are not concentrating on just one sport. “I think they are better athletes when they are concentrating on multiple sports. And you get to build different relationships on different teams.” Another goal is to support her coaches and to help them as much as she can so they can do what they need to do. “The one word I would use [about the coaches] is ‘family.’ We even had a shirt made that says ‘family.’” She spoke one-on-one with the Ragsdale coaches when she came and learned a lot about the school from them. Herndon helped her transition to her new responsibilities. “He gave me vision to see things in a different way.” Herndon praised the hiring of Jones, saying, “Coach Jones is a class act and will be an incredible asset for the entire Ragsdale Tiger community. I want to commend our wonderful Ragsdale Tiger administrative team on a fantastic hire.” Even though she’s only officially been a member of Ragsdale’s staff for a month, Jones already has learned about the family nature of the school and how each player/parent takes pride and ownership in it. “Everyone here wants to go above and beyond,” Jones said. “They are supportive of their own teams and supportive of other teams and coaches. Everyone is always asking what they can do to help. They take pride in ownership. It’s something special.” She also praised the athletic booster club and mentioned they do a great job of supplementing the different needs of the teams. “One of the things they do is bridging the gap for parents,” Jones said. “I’m very excited to be here. This is my dream job,” she said. “I want to support my coaches and celebrate the athletes. “I truly embrace that Jamestown is a community and want everyone to embrace that as well. We want you to help support our athletes whether you have kids here or not.” Ragsdale’s first football game will be Aug. 23 and it’s for certain that Jones will be decked out in the school colors, cheering on her new team. You’ll also catch her mowing three of the five fields at the school.

was taken prisoner by the Native Americans. The Native Americans also took all of the horses and anything of value. The Native Americans and their captive had travelled about forty miles when a quarrel broke out over the ownership of Charles. The leader of the Native Americans put an end to the quarrel by tomahawking Charles. The remains of the rear party were found by a young man who notified Daniel Boone. Boone led a burial party back to the sight of the massacre. Rebecca Boone, wife of Daniel Boone and mother of James Boone sent sheets in which to wrap the bodies of the men killed by the Native Americans. The men in the rear party were buried near the sight of the massacre. It was the wish of Daniel Boone to continue the journey. Most of the others in the party were too disheartened by the massacre to continue with the journey to Kentucky and returned to Virginia and North Carolina.

Local programs benefit from Wyndham By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

The Wyndham Championship means a lot of professional golfers and fans visit the Piedmont Triad with an estimated economic impact of around $30 million. It also means a lot of help for local agencies. The Wyndham Championship Fore! Good program donates to philanthropic groups, supports education, community development and preservation of natural resources. The tournament is presented by the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Some groups supported by Wyndham Championship Fore! Good include: Backpack Programs: One out of four children in North Carolina is food insecure, and the Wyndham Championship’s Birdies Fore Backpacks program works with local organizations to provide backpacks full of nutritious food for children in need when school

is not in session. Since its 2014 beginning, the program has provided more than 430,000 nutritious meals. Area programs benefitting include Backpack Beginnings, Forsyth Backpacks, Out of the Garden Project and United Way of Greater High Point. Kevin Harvick Foundation: The Kevin Harvick Foundation supports programs that enrich the lives of children throughout the United States, helping underprivileged youth realize their dreams. The foundation was established in 2010 by NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and his wife. Crosby Scholars: The Crosby Scholars Community Partnership is a non-profit college-access organization that helps students prepare academically, financially

and personally for successful college admission beginning as early as middle school. Crosby Scholars serves more than 8,000 students each year and has awarded more than $6 million in grants since 1993. Paul Tesori Foundation: The First Tee of the Triad, along with the Wyndham Championship, hosts the Paul Tesori Foundation’s All-Star Clinic and pairing 25 children with special needs with PGA Tour professionals during tournament week. This event includes PGA Tour instruction and demonstrations, along with interactive golf experiences. Tesori is the caddy for 2011 Wyndham Championship victor Webb Simpson. The First Tee of the Triad:

The mission of The First Tee of the Triad is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build and instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. The organization hosts a free youth golf clinic during Wyndham Championship tournament week and PGA Tour professionals provide the instruction. The First Tee of the Triad runs after-school programs throughout the school year and various summer programs for 1,500 students at 18 Piedmont Triad locations. American Junior Golf Association (AJGA): The AJGA’s mission is to develop young men and women who are looking to win college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Wyndham Rewards supports talented junior golfers who lack the financial resources to play a national junior golf schedule through an Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) grant. The AJGA Wyndham Invitational tournament, a major on the AJGA schedule, is played annually at

Sedgefield Country Club. Wyndham Worldwide also sponsors the annual Wyndham Cup, a “Ryder Cup-Style” competition between teams of AJGA all-stars representing the eastern and western halves of the United States. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro: One of the Wyndham Championship’s mostpopular fan amenities is “Key to Wyn,” which offers tournament fans an opportunity to win fabulous prizes in an air-conditioned building. In 2016 and ’17, rather than disassemble the structure for use the following year, the building was donated to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro. It was disassembled, trucked to its new location and rebuilt into a safe, affordable, energy-efficient new home for a Greensboro family. This year the building will again be donated following the tournament. Piedmont Triad Partnership: The Piedmont Triad Partnership is an economic development organization that fosters opportunities for growth, entrepreneurship and innovation across the region.

company continued from front

continued from front Poston’s 22-under included a bogey-free tournament. Lee Trevino was the last player to win stroke play without a bogey in 1974 in New Orleans. Poston’s win makes him the 19th first-time PGA Tour player who got his first victory at the Wyndham. He is only the fifth North Carolina native to win. After defending champion Brandt Snedeker made it obvious he wouldn’t take home another Snead Cup this year, local loyalties switched to 2011 champion Webb Simpson. Simpson, a native of Raleigh who now lives in Charlotte, had a lot of fan support from his local family – his brother lives in Greensboro and sister in Winston-Salem – and his Wake Forest University family. Simpson started out with a couple of bogeys but soon turned things around and ended the tournament in second place for the second year in a row. But he really wanted to win again. “It would mean a lot,” he said after the third round. “There’s something special about your first win, something special about Greensboro for me. The support’s been fantastic, so there’s a lot of reasons I want to win. It’s going to take a low number. I’ve got to stay within my game and

strike when I can strike. “I love being here. I love this golf course. “ 2016 winner Si Woo Kim made a charge Sunday and was only two shots behind the leaders after he played No. 15. He missed the cut in his two other previous appearances but this year ended the tournament in fifth place. Going into this year’s 80th Wyndham Championship, Snedeker was the tournament’s top money-winner at $2,879,369 in 11 appearances. Simpson was in third place at $2,545,268 in 10 appearances. Sam Snead, who won eight times and played 34 times, only won a total of $59,136. Snedeker was surprised during the Wednesday proam after he finished the ninth hole when a plaque was unveiled on the wall of champions denoting his opening round 59 last year. He had joked at media day a few weeks ago that he expected to see the plaque. “We had a little bet going last year and I promised him a plaque if he ended up winning,” said John McConnell, whose company, McConnell Golf, owns Sedgefield Country Club. “We figured we’d surprise him during his round today.” “It’s really cool,” Snedeker said. “It was a really nice thing they did here. It

would be cool to come back in the future and see that plaque still there.” Snedeker’s plaque joins those honoring Charlie Sifford and Arnold Palmer. Jordan Spieth’s last-minute entry into the tournament became the big attendance draw this year. His 67 in the first round and 69 in the second were not enough to overcome a 77 in the third round and he did not make the secondary cut Saturday night. In his only other appearance, Spieth lost in a playoff in 2013 to Patrick Reed. Josh Teater, a Kentucky native, garnered some local support with his bright orange caps, courtesy of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The weather on Sunday stayed in the 80s but the humidity was high and partially overcast. Rain had been predicted each day of the tournament, but held off after a deluge Wednesday night that made the creeks overflow and flooded part of some fairways. The course is so well designed, however, and the ground crew so competent that there was no problem with play for the opening round on Thursday. A good sign for the tournament and Sedgefield was the new home construction going up around the course and the lack of for sale signs this year.

company to open his own business. “My vision is to build it into a 25-30 million-dollar-a-year company that employees 35-50 people,” Salimbene said. He currently has offices in Greensboro, but purchased the building at the corner of Bales Chapel and Harvey roads in Jamestown, which formerly housed Phillips Velvet and later MTTC. Although fabrication is already being handled onsite, Salimbene is in the process of having the building upfitted with numerous offices, a large common break room, a small break room if someone wants solitude and a gym for all the employees. “I consider myself and those who work here as a team,” Salimbene said, “and I am not above sweeping the floor if I need to.” Salimbene began his career in glass and glazing in New Jersey, where he worked for a friend in that business. After moving

to North Carolina, he worked for another glass company before becoming co-owner of one. “I love this business because no day is ever the same,” he said. “Everything has glass in it but every job is different. There is no better feeling than driving by a project and knowing you did it. It is a great feeling to see your work.” Salimbene hopes to have construction at his new site completed within the next couple of months and looks forward to having the entire company under one roof. “I am excited to be here,” he said. “I love this property and the location and will be glad when all the business is here.” As a local businessman, Salimbene also hopes to become an active part of the community. Road trip! BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S corNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m taking my cat “Frederica” on her first long road trip, across three states to my parents’ house. Do you have any tips for keeping cats calm and safe in the car? — Anne in Buffalo, New York DEAR ANNE: I sure do! Traveling with pets can be much easier with some planning and forethought. A pet restraint or carrier is essential to keep them safe inside the car, but that’s just one of the things to consider. Check these off your to-do list: * Make sure Frederica’s vaccinations and license are up to date, and that the tags are on her travel collar. * Put an LED pendant on her collar in case you need to take her out at night. * Include a sturdy leash, and always put Frederica on the leash

when she’s not in her carrier. * Make copies of her vaccination record and a list of medications. * Prepare her carrier ahead of time: Make sure it has a comfy cushion in the base (one that doesn’t slide around), a favorite toy and a no-spill water dispenser. * If your cat gets super-anxious during car trips, talk to the veterinarian about giving her medication. * Staying overnight in a hotel? Search for pet-friendly hotels online. * Never leave Frederica alone in the car — take her with you during stops and breaks. * Call your parents and ask them to prepare a space for Frederica’s bed and a spot for her litter box. She’ll settle in much faster when you put those two items in place as soon as you get there. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

'Moscow Mitch' is a ridiculous smear BY RICH LOWRY There was a time when the left considered McCarthyism the worst of all political tactics. That was before it became useful to question Mitch McConnell’s loyalty to his country. The Senate majority leader’s offense is blocking Democratic-sponsored election security bills, which has occasioned the sort of charges that Democrats have spent the better half of the past 50 years ruling out of bounds. The Washington Post headlined a column, “Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset.” It wasn’t tongue-in-cheek. “Let’s,” urged Post columnist Dana Milbank, “call this what it is: unpatriotic. The Kentucky Republican is, arguably more than any other American, doing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s bidding.” Rep. John Sarbanes, D-Md., said supporting the bills was an opportunity for McConnell “to do the right thing in terms of demonstrating his patriotism.” A CNN national security analyst declared, “I believe the only reason Mitch McConnell is doing this is that he believes Donald Trump cannot win without the Russians’ help.” MSNBC host Joe Scarborough dubbed McConnell “Moscow Mitch,” a moniker that trended on Twitter and substituted alliteration for thought. The occasion for the assault on McConnell was a naked and cynical political setup. After Robert Mueller’s testimony, Democrats tried to get so-called unanimous consent for election security bills in the Senate. This procedure is reserved for uncontroversial items that, as you might guess, have unanimous support. While everyone in the Senate agrees we should combat Russian interference, not everyone agrees on how to do it. One of the Democratic bills would mandate the use of paper ballots as a failsafe against hacking. This may well be the best practice, but running elections is

the responsibility of states and localities, not the federal government. As supporters of state prerogatives, Republicans could be expected to oppose the bill, and sure enough it only got one Republican vote in the House. Another bill would require campaigns to report offers of foreign assistance, a superficially appealing idea. Yet, the more comprehensive such a bill is, the more likely it is to sweep up minor and innocent interactions that fall far short of the infamous Trump Tower meeting (that itself came to nothing). There’s no need to reach for extravagant explanations for why McConnell would oppose these bills (He’s a tool of the Kremlin! He hopes his Moscow minders will put Trump over the top in 2020!). The Kentucky senator has an extensive record as an opponent of federal activism and of poorly drafted campaign reform bills. What the case against McConnell comes down to is the usual sophomoric Washington argument that if you don’t want to do this one specific thing, you don’t want to do anything and have the worst possible intentions. McConnell supported the $380 million to aid in election security funding that passed Congress. And he supported the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into election interference that produced an alarming public report late last month. As McConnell pointed out in a peppery defense of his record on the Senate floor, he’s been a Russian hawk going back to the Reagan administration, and has continued to call out Putin since 2016. He doesn’t need lessons from anyone about how to be cleareyed about Russia, let alone how to be patriotic. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

other supporters attended school board and county commissioner meetings to emphasize the benefits children receive at Gateway and the problems transferring them to other schools would cause. Discussion between parents/supporters, school board members and commissioners resulted in a decision to make necessary repairs to the building so the school could continue to operate. Progression through proper channels takes time, but work on the Gateway facility has finally begun. The window project was the first to be addressed. “The design was completed and a contractor was selected by bids,” acknowledged Janson Silvers, GCS program administrator of media relations. “Work has begun on windows in the hallway corridors and will move to the pod windows. A projected date for completion is Sept. 15.” An architect has been selected to design the roof, and once that is finished the job will be open for bids. When the bid is awarded, materials still need to be ordered before work can begin. “Workers will be able to repair the roof while classes are in session,” Silvers explained. “There is no projected date for when the roof will be done, but classes will go on as usual.” Students at Gateway Education Center will begin classes on Aug. 26.

Couch Theatre BY AMY ANDeRSON UglyDolls (PG) — In Uglyville, all the dolls are decidedly different. In fact, they celebrate their brightly colored weirdness and lack of homogeneity in full-throated song bursts — especially the pugnaciously positive Moxy (voiced by Kelly Clarkson), whose life can be enhanced only by a child to love her. Watermelon: Think outside the rind Watermelon is a good source of vitamin C, thiamin and vitamin B6, vitamin A, magnesium and potassium. It contains no cholesterol and is very low in sodium. This rich red fruit is fat-free and has lots of lycopene, an antioxidant believed to reduce cancer and lower the risk of heart attack. Though there is sugar in watermelons, it is naturally diluted by the high levels of water in the fruit. Today’s watermelon varieties are larger, fleshier and sweeter, the seeds smaller and the rind thinner. Watermelon is perhaps the most refreshing, thirst-quenching fruit of all. It’s a perfect snack to serve on hot and humid summer days when we require restoring our body with a lot of fluids. When using watermelon

One of my dearest friends loves all things watermelon. It’s always a challenge to think of new ways to serve her favorite melon. Watermelon is a delicious, fresh ingredient that shouldn’t be restricted to just fruit platters and buffet tables. Its versatility is astounding. Botanically, a watermelon is a fruit — a ripened ovary of a seed plant and its contents, much like a pepper, pumpkin or tomato. However, watermelon also is related to the cucurbitaceous plant family of gourds, like cucumber and squash. For this reason, it’s also classified as a vegetable, or as it’s sometimes called, a “fregetable.”

in your recipes, think outside the rind. Try this retro dessert for Watermelon Pudding Pie. It’s sweetened with watermelon juice and decorated with watermelon balls. It’s as easy as pie!

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (to look like watermelon seeds), optional 1. If making your own pie crust, heavily coat a 9-inch pie plate with cooking spray; set aside. Place crumbled cookies, salt and granulated sugar in a food processor; process until finely ground, 10 to 15 seconds. Add melted butter; process until mixture is moist and clumps together easily, about 5 seconds. Press crumb mixture evenly on bottom and up sides of greased pie plate. Refrigerate until set, about 30 minutes. 2. Cut part of the watermelon into cubes to equal 3 cups (about 16 ounces). Cover remaining watermelon with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use. 3. Place cubed watermelon in a blender, and process until smooth, about 20 seconds. Pour through a fine wire-mesh strainer

into a large measuring cup, pressing gently to squeeze out juice; discard solids. (You should have about 1 1/2 cups of watermelon juice.) 4. Stir together watermelon juice, cornstarch, granulated sugar and the salt in a small saucepan; let stand 5 minutes. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook, whisking often, until cornstarch dissolves, 5 to 6 minutes. Immediately remove watermelon mixture from heat. Let stand, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 20 minutes. Stir in lemon zest, lemon juice and (if desired) food coloring gel. 5. While watermelon mixture stands, beat 1 cup of the heavy cream and 1/4 cup of the mascarpone with an electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form, about 50 seconds. Gradually add 1/2 cup of the powdered sugar, beating until stiff peaks form, about 10 seconds. Working in batches, gently fold watermelon mixture and the chocolate

chips (if desired) into the whipped cream mixture until smooth and blended. Spoon watermelon mixture into prepared pie plate. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours. 6. Scoop out flesh of remaining watermelon with a sharp 1-inch melon baller, making about 10 (1 inch) balls. Cut watermelon balls in half, and place, cut side down, on a plate lined with paper towels; set aside. 7. In a large bowl, gently stir together remaining mascarpone cheese and 1/3 cup powdered sugar until just combined. Beat remaining 1 cup heavy cream in a medium bowl on medium speed until stiff peaks form. Gently fold whipped cream into mascarpone mixture. 8. Dollop mascarponewhipped cream topping on top of pie, leaving a 1-inch border. Place watermelonball halves, cut side down, along edges of whipped cream topping. Serve immediately.
