Axe throwing is latest local entertainment Walking outside next to the building, you can hear the dull thunk of metal hitting wood – or the clatter of metal hitting the floor. It’s all part of Kersey Valley Attractions’ newest draw, Axe Throwing. Owner Tony Wohlgemuth was so taken with the sport when he learned about it from David Rundberg, who runs the escape rooms on site, that he knew he had to make it part of the yearround entertainment venue. It opened in February of this year. “We have indoor and outdoor axe throwing,” said Sydney Parks, a Kersey Valley employee. “You can stand up close to it at 12 feet or up to 25 feet away. She said participants at the indoor venue use small hatchets, 14 inches in length, while those at

some of the longer distances use larger axes. “They’re heavier and kind of throw themselves,” she said with a laugh. The outdoor course goes all around the Kersey Valley property and includes11 different targets, Photo Courtesy Kersey Valley Attraction with different point values, distances or skill levels needed. For instance, hitting a bee image on the target near the Bee Educated building earns points. “The outdoors is like a hiking, nature tour,” Parks said. “I think we’re the only ones that do this in North Carolina.” She said the sport started in, of all places, bars. Maybe not the best combination: alcohol and sharp objects. Parks said their axe throwing is safer – the site is alcohol-free – but there is an age minimum and no spectators are allowed without Photos by Carol Brooks a ticket. Colgate dental van visits Haynes-Inman By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

People are used to seeing bright yellow buses come and go as they bring children to school and take them home again. But the large red and white van parked on the east side of Haynes-Inman Education Center on Sept. 6 might have generated some curious glances. The 32-foot van is one of nine that travel throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and parts of Virginia providing free dental screenings and oral health education to children 3-12 years old. The front part of the van provides space for students to sit and receive information about good dental care. The back has a dentist chair where children, who have received permission from a parent or guardian, can sit as dental professionals screen their teeth to make sure there are no problems. Parents receive a “report card” that explains what the dentist finds and provides referrals if needed. The vans are part of Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures®, a worldwide program that promotes better oral health. The nine vans involved in this part of the program are housed in Concord. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution urges Americans to reflect on the United States Constitution during this month’s annual observance in honor of this foundational document of national governance. “There are two documents of paramount importance to American history: the Declaration of Independence, which forged our national identity, and the United States Constitution, which set forth the framework for the federal government that functions to this day,” said DAR President General Denise Doring VanBuren. “While Independence Day is a well-recognized and beloved national holiday, fewer people know about Constitution Week, an Photos by Norma B. North Carolina sent five delegates to Philadelphia for the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Governor Alexander Martin and William R. Davie had business at home in North Carolina and were not present in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787, to sign the Constitution. Alexander Martin was governor of North Carolina when the Constitution was written. He was a character. He was court-martialed for cowardice at the Battle of Germantown, but was acquitted. Martin was a lawyer, a planter and a judge before becoming governor. William R. Davie was a prominent attorney and planter. He was born in England, educated at the College of New Jersey (later known as Princeton) and was a Colonel in the State Calvary. He is known as the Father of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Davie served on the Grand Committee during the Constitutional Convention. Fund raising golf tournament for Ragsdale baseball

The Ragsdale baseball program has improved by leaps and bounds recently and now the boys, their families and the coaching staff are working hard to improve the facilities and things surrounding the program for them and for future players by putting on their second annual fundraising golf tournament at Jamestown Park Golf Course Monday, October 28th at 1:30 p.m. Their efforts can be supported in a variety of ways including playing in the golf event ($60 per person/$240 per team); being the title sponsor of the event ($1,000); being a hole sponsor ($100 or you can field a team and be a hole sponsor for $300.) Golf teams will play a captains’ choice format at the beautifully renovated Jamestown Park Golf

Course and receive a meal and beverages with their entry fee. There will be $600 in cash prizes for the top 3 teams. Last year’s event raised money for the team to get a new uniform, practice shirts and shorts, new baseball hats and some things that in the past the players’ families were having to pay for along with paying to attend games to see their children play. Monies this year will go toward improvements at the batting cage, the field, a second new uniform, a spring break tournament and hopefully more. Ragsdale improved from two wins to seven to 10 to winning 13 games last season that included an upset of #9 seeded South Mecklenburg in the first round of the state 4-A tournament and the outlook is

convention continued from front the big states versus the little states. Davie voted for the Great Compromise establishing the two houses of Congress – the Senate, which would have equal representation and the House of Representatives, which would have representatives based on population. This was significant as North Carolina was the only “large” state to back the Great Compromise. Richard Dobbs Spaight from New Bern was a delegate and had the distinction of being one of the few delegates who never missed a session. At the Convention Spaight was instrumental in seeing that the 3/5 amendment, having to do with the counting of slaves for reapportionment in the House of Representatives, was passed. Mr. Spaight signed the Constitution, went on to serve as Governor of North Carolina, and died as a result of wounds suffered in a duel.

William Blount was another North Carolina signer. He was a merchant, planter, land speculator and paymaster for N.C. militia, and did not have much to say at the convention, as he was a big proponent of the rights of the common man. Blount missed a month of the convention because he was also in the Continental Congress. He was not enthusiastic about the Constitution, but Benjamin Franklin talked him into signing it. Blount was not particularly honest, having made many shady land deals. George Washington appointed Blount to be the governor of the Tennessee territory, however, as a reward for helping to get N.C. to ratify the Constitution. Blount was later elected to the Senate. While serving in the Senate it was discovered that he was trying to give lands to a foreign country (Britain) and was tried for treason.

He was expelled from the Senate. Dr. Hugh Williamson was the oldest delegate from North Carolina and probably the spokes person for the delegation. He was brilliant. He graduated from what is now the University of Pennsylvania, became a preacher, studied abroad to become a doctor and served as the Surgeon General during the Revolution. He became a mathematician, and even an astronomer. A friend of Ben Franklin, the two conducted many electricity experiments together. Dr. Williamson wrote books on comets, the stars and a book on electric eels. Dr. Williamson made 73 speeches and served on five committees at the Constitutional Convention as well as signing the document. He served North Carolina as a Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Weasels and bedbugs and other strange things By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com All around the mulberry bush the monkey chased the weasel. The weasel thought it was all in fun. Pop goes the weasel. Most of us remember a version of this cute song we sang as children. On the surface, the subjects are self-explanatory, but a deeper look into what they really are is just one of the things visitors will learn on a tour of the Mendenhall Homeplace. Before technology made life simpler, women made the clothes the family wore. That involved spinning yarn. She would take the spun yarn and put it on a clock reel (or click reel, yarn winder or skein winder), which would tell her just how much she had. Most winders had a set number of revolutions to make a skein. The woman could not be expected to count the number of revolutions the reel made. She relied on a built-in counter to do that for her. The counter would move forward a notch for each complete revolution and when it reached the desired length, a slat of wood or metal would hit a tiny peg and make a loud “pop” as it slid over it. The slat of wood was known as a weasel, thus “pop goes the weasel.” The woman only had to keep track of how many times the weasel went pop to know the yardage she had spun. Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace talked about the phrase as it related to what he calls the skein winder at the Homeplace. “A skein is a length of yarn, not a particular length,” he said. “Some people think a skein is 180 feet, some say 90 feet. “One revolution [on the Homeplace skein winder] is about 6 feet. If you turn it 30 times you would have a length, or skein, of 180 feet, or 60 yards. The advantage of this is it literally tallies how much you’re winding. It would ‘pop’ when you reached your full skein.” He held up his hands, palms facing, about a foot apart and said the winder was an alternative to having someone feed the yarn as someone else winds it into a ball. Rogers said “weasel” was just a knickname for a skein winder. The noise the sprocket makes as it turns was believed to sound like a weasel.

Photos by Carol Brooks

(At left) Shawn Rogers, director of the Mendenhall Homeplace, holds an original bed key used to tighten the rope bed. (Above) The peg in the lower portion of the sprocket has pushed out the counter, which is ready to pop back into place, indicating a skein of 180 feet has been wound. He said the winder at the Homeplace is over 200 years old and has been repaired several times. “It’s amazing it still works,” he noted. “We let the kids use it.” Although Rogers did not know the type of wood used on the winder, it could have made out of mulberry wood, which would tie in to the nursery rhyme. The nursery rhyme originated in England and could go back as far as the 18th century. It could have been created to keep children amused. There is also a theory that it was originally a country dance enjoyed by Queen Victoria in 1852. A weasel is a small carnivorous mammal and they pop their heads up when disturbed, so it is quite plausible that this was the source of the name of the dance. Surprisingly, there is actually a National Pop Goes the Weasel Day on June 14. Another phrase we have heard since childhood is “Sleep tight. Don’t let the bedbugs bite.” This saying, disgusting as it might be, actually has a known origin. Mendenhall Homeplace has several cord beds, or rope beds. “The entire framework of the bed is held together by one rope,” Rogers said. “It’s laid out in a grid, woven. They are looped into the [side] rails and to the bottom rail. “After you sleep on this for a while, the

fibers in the rope get stretched out and your bed sags. You have to tighten it up.” To do this, you have to use a bed key, which you insert on the rope outside of the rails and turn it. The action is repeated throughout the bed, making the end of the rope longer. “You would tie a knot in it and the bed would be tighter. Therefore, you would “sleep tight. “Eventually the rope gets stretched out too much and has to be replaced.” Rogers related the story of visitors who would come and overstay their welcome. “You’d either take the bed key when they didn’t realize it or you wouldn’t give it to them, so by the time their backsides hit the ground, they realized it was time to go.” Rogers said the mattress on the rope bed is called a “tick” mattress and has nothing to do with bugs, but with the tightly-woven fabric it is made of. “Everything that is in it is called ticking,” he said. “Generally, ticking was anything that was soft – dried corn husks, grass, down feathers if you’re lucky, cotton, scraps of cloth. All those little bugs and mice love that stuff. That’s why we have bedbugs. “So when your mom said, ‘sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite,’ she meant it literally.”

in this issue on the front page.) On Tuesday, Jamestown Major Lynn Montgomery presented Beach with a proclamation recognizing Constitution Week. The DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate September 17–23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into Public Law #915. The celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution. DAR has been the foremost advocate for the awareness, promotion and celebration of Constitution Week. By fostering knowledge of, and appreciation for, the Constitution and the inalienable rights it

More thoughts on the weasel

There are several versions of “Pop Goes the Weasel” and, surprisingly enough, they all don’t involve a mulberry bush. There could be up to 40 verses to the song. Some thoughts say a weasel was a small flat tailor’s iron. It could represent a tankard. It has also been theorized that the monkey chasing the weasel meant having to pawn one’s coat, with the monkey representing the financial trouble. We could relate that these days to having a monkey on your back. But the “yarn” yarn makes a better tale.

When training seems to go backward

BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S corNer

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I tried training my cat to stay off the counter using the “positive reinforcement” method you described. It worked at first, but now “Jake” is acting worse! Why didn’t it work? -– Greg H., Iowa City DEAR GREG: Don’t give up on training Jake to stay off the counter. If you continue to be consistent in rewarding the behavior that you want from him, and not rewarding the behavior you don’t want, Jake should settle down. What’s happening with Jake is not unusual. He previously had a habit of jumping up on the counter, and his “reward” at the time was to get attention from you, even if it was just picking him up or shooing him down. Even though he responded well to the initial training, that habit is still lurking in the background.

Behavioral therapists call this “extinction burst” — a last hurrah, of sorts, by the brain. It’s one more huge attempt to get that old “reward” back. It’s very similar to someone who’s on a strict diet for a long time, and despite seeing great results, suddenly begins talking themselves into eating that piece of cake they’ve seen in the bakery window. Now, cats (probably) don’t talk themselves into starting up old behaviors. Jake may simply be reacting to an old habit resurfacing. Keep working with him on staying off the counter. When he looks as if he’s going to jump up, redirect his attention by calling him over. Note the times that he jumps on the counter and keep him occupied with a fuzzy toy or snuggles during these periods. Be patient, and don’t give up.

yes, gun ownership is a God-given right BY RICH LOWRY The fastest way to trend on Twitter, and not in a good way, is to say that the right to bear arms is a God-given right. Texas state Rep. Matt Schaefer established this beyond a doubt in a Twitter thread in the aftermath of the West Texas shooting spree. He said that he wouldn’t use “the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans.” Progressives were aghast, and when actress Alyssa Milano objected, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz jumped in to support Schaefer’s argument (in less bombastic terms). The basic proposition isn’t hard to defend, and indeed it is written into our fundamental documents. This doesn’t mean that God wants you to own an AR-15, or that every jot and tittle of our current gun regime is divinely mandated. Far from it. Yet there is a natural right to self-defense, and gun ownership is inherently connected to that right in a modern society. This is glossed over even by Democrats who have a connection to America’s culture of gun ownership. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said the other week, “I look at [gun legislation] and I always say, ‘Does this hurt Uncle Dick in his deer stand?’” That’s not the question, though. The Second Amendment isn’t fundamentally about Uncle Dick bagging deer, but about his ability to defend himself and his family. The notion of God-given rights shouldn’t be controversial. It is a bedrock of the American creed, written into the Declaration of Independence. Its preamble says, of course, that all men “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”

The Bill of Rights numbers “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” among those unalienable rights. Why? Because the founders believed that everyone has an inherent right to self-defense. As David Harsanyi notes in his history of the gun in America, “First Freedom,” John Adams said in his defense of one of the British soldiers charged in the Boston Massacre in 1770 that self-defense was “the primary canon in the law of nature.” Owning a gun is an extension of this law of nature and has been recognized as such for a long time in Anglo-America. The right to bear arms had deep roots in England, and predated the Constitution on these shores. There was no doubt at the time about the importance of the right to bear arms. Harsanyi writes that “not a single soul in the provisional government or at the Second Continental Congress or any delegate at the Constitutional Convention — or, for that matter, any new American — ever argued against the idea of individuals owning a firearm.” None of this is necessarily a trump card in the gun control debate — the most commonly proposed gun control restrictions wouldn’t substantially lessen gun ownership. It does mean, though, that there is a limit to how far gun control can go in America and that proponents of new restrictions should be fully aware that they are tampering with a constitutionally protected individual right. If Uncle Dick likes to hunt, good for him. But his right to own a firearm doesn’t begin or end there.
