Pennybyrn seeks rezoning for rehab center By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Most people probably think that the Pennybyrn at Maryfield continuing care retirement community is in High Point, just outside the Jamestown limits. But the organization owns several properties along the west side of Penny Road that are actually in Jamestown. It is on five of these properties that a transitional rehabilitation center is planned. To do this, Maryfield, Inc., the parent company,

has requested that property on Penny Road at 111,113, 115, 121 and a portion of parcel No. 176232 be rezoned from Single Family Residential to Conditional Zoning-Civic. Representatives addressed the Jamestown Planning Board in a special called meeting on Sept. 16. The new building will be an approximately 23,000 sq. ft., 24-bed, single-story, short-term stay facility with parking facing Penny Road. A new entrance will be installed off Penny Road. The decorative fencing that

was installed several years ago will be continued. A sidewalk will be installed on the west side of the road for part of the frontage. Jamestown is planning sidewalks on the east side of Penny Road. CZ-CIV zoning permits a “skilled care nursing facility with in-patient and outpatience therapy services associated with a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) and it’s accessory uses. Other uses associated with the CCRC see rehab, page 3

Healthy meal prep business opens By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

When Josh Myers looked in the mirror eight years ago, he wasn’t happy with what he saw. “I was a great big boy,” Myers said. But eight months later, through proper nutrition planning and eating, Myers had lost 145 lbs. Learning how to prepare healthy meals was one reason he partnered with his sister, Sarah Long, to open Long Life Nutrition at 709 W. Main St. in Jamestown, in the former Captain’s Seafood Restaurant. “We are a healthy meal prep company and make food for people who are too busy to make it for themselves,” Long said of the business, which has been open about five weeks. “We know what foods you have to put in your body to get the results you need,” Myers said. “We found a fun way and a flavorful way to make healthy foods taste good and still enjoy it.” Meals are pre-prepared for pickup or patrons can also select their meal and eat in one of the booths on the premises. “We took all the excuses out of it,” Myers said. “We have to make it taste good and fun, otherwise people won’t stick to it.” “We take the shopping, cooking and cleaning away from you,” Long added. Each Monday the siblings publish a menu online, which changes weekly. They learn what items are bestsellers and should appear more regularly and which just don’t appeal to their customers. A recent menu boasted beef and bean enchiladas with salsa

A drive through the Oakdale Mill Village these days brings sadness when thinking about what was once a vital part of the Jamestown community. Some houses have collapsed. Many are boarded up. Those that are occupied are not in good shape. “We’re looking at possible code violations,” Town Manager Kenny Cole told the Jamestown Town Council on Sept. 17. He referenced the Minimum Housing Standards, chapter 151.15-151.99 of the town’s Code of Ordinances. The Council has urged Cole to look into the situation for several months. Cole has been in touch with the owner who agreed to remove three houses that have fallen down. “We told him what the mill meant to the town and it wasn’t our purpose for him to totally do demolition on the site, but definitely three houses laying halfway on the ground are hazardous,” Cole said. “The Oakdale Mill area has substantial historical significance to our town and it is our intent to work with the owner through the preser-

vation of the structures,” he said in a letter to the owner. “Although a majority of the houses, including the mill, may be in violation of our housing standards, we would need the opinion of the County Building inspector. “Three homes (200, 202, 204 Oak Drive) are in need of immediate attention. These houses are unfit for human habitation due to dilapidation and are harmful to the welfare of the residents of the town.” The letter also listed three other issues that needed attention: • A fenced area around the mill needs repair. • Several houses with open doors and windows need to be secured. • A portion of the mill roof appears to have collapsed. The owner has agreed to fix all the issues. Cole said town staff would continue to monitor housing standards throughout the town on a regular basis. There was good news and somewhat bad news about the sidewalk projects in Jamestown. The Town Council learned on Sept. 17 that a wall on the East Fork bridge and sidewalk project didn’t see code, page 3

JES noted for high student growth When school officials talk about student growth, they are not referring to how tall students are getting. Rather it is a gage of scholastic development. “Students are expected to make a minimum of one year of academic growth each year,” explained Dwayne Jordan, principal of Jamestown Elementary School. “Our vision is to make sure all students increase at least one grade level, but we want those that are behind to make one and a half or better to bring them up to the level they should be.” Since Jordan became principal of JES in 2015, he has seen the school receive high student growth marks four years in a

row, taking it from a level D to a B. The elementary school is extremely diverse with a student body that includes Caucasians, Hispanics, African Americans, children with special needs and some who are economically disadvantaged. “Every sub group in the school has exceeded growth expectations,” Jordan said. He credits the academic growth to intervention as part of the core – reading and math – program. “We look at grade level standards and teach to those,” Jordan said. “We also look at each student and determine what tools they need to bring them to grade level. Do they need ongoing remediation skills they have not yet acquired in the past?” Photo by Norma B. Dennis Jordan noted that kids who are behind Dwayne Jordan, right, principal at Jamestown Elementary School, and Amanda Austin, media specialist, hold the banner the school recently received for High see student, page 3 Student Growth in the 2018-2019 school year.

A love affair with pears

BY ANGeLA SheLF MeDeARIS KitcHeN DiVa

I adore eating a perfectly ripened Bosc or Anjou pear. That first bite through that firm, greenish-golden skin into the sweet juicy fruit is a delight for the senses. Best of all, pears are a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Pears seldom cause allergies and are usually safe for infants and small children. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may even guard against macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss.

Position the pears cut sides down and roast about 30 minutes. Turn them over and continue roasting until tender, 5 to 10 minutes more. Lay a slice of Camembert on top of each and continue roasting just to melt the cheese, about 2 minutes. To Serve: Toss the arugula with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, and the remaining salt and ground black pepper, and divide among 6 salad plates. Place a warm pear half over each and top with a spoonful of the chutney. Serve immediately. DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter smokes. She doesn’t have COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. — N.P. DEAR N.P.: Getting someone to quit smoking is a challenge, but perhaps some advice I can give your daughter might help. The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years. The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in long-term smokers. Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough. Quitting smoking will do more good than any cough syrup can. DEAR DR. ROACH: Does taking Norvasc or any calcium channel blocker reduce or destroy the calcium in the bones, eventually causing osteoporosis? — E.G. DEAR E.G.: No. Calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine (Norvasc), work on cells in the heart and blood vessels, controlling the flow of calcium into the cell. Calcium in the cell is one of the regulators of smooth muscle cells, and for Norvasc in particular, that means its major effect is on blood vessels, causing them to open up and reduce blood pressure, and thus the amount of work the heart needs to do. Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis. One group found that people on calcium channel blockers may have a slightly higher risk of fractures; however, that was thought to be due to an increased number of falls, especially in the elderly. Physicians need to take care not to use too much medication, especially ones that dilate blood vessels, as they can increase risk of dizziness and falls. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. need about 180 hours of intervention to catch up. “Intervention as part of core instruction is the key,” he said. “The second step is making sure these kids have access to extra tutoring, such as volunteer reading buddies.” Weekly assessments help teachers gage how effective their teaching was during that week. “We don’t consider it a test for students as much as a teaching tool for the teachers,” Jordan said. Title I schools also receive federal money based on free and reduced lunch percentages. Jordan has used money JES has received to provide extra coaching support for teachers and direct services for students. He has been able to hire a reading and math coach and a second grade tutor, as well as provide after school tutoring for students who need extra help with their studies. “Another key component to ensuring children do well in school is to make sure they enjoy coming,” Jordan said. “We try to design their day around things they are interested in. We provide incentives and recognition and for students who enjoy competition there are spelling bees and multiplication tournaments. “Having qualified experienced staff helps. But we

also have some of the best new teachers that come out of UNCG based on their internship program. We have student teachers from that school every year and I often end up hiring them.” Anita Sharp, a Guilford County School Board member, recently attended JES to help the school celebrate its accomplishment. She had lunch with students and chatted with a special fifth grader who was once behind academically, but worked hard to exceed normal student growth and reach grade level. “The student discussed how she helped herself and the help she received from family, teachers and peers,” Jordan said. The staff at Jamestown Elementary wants to continue to pursue excellence for each student while tapping into the whole child. Some of the ways they do this is by focusing on character traits, citizenship and service learning. “For the past two years we have raised more than $2,000 each year for Pennies for Patients, a fundraiser for people fighting blood cancer,” Jordan said. Although Jordan is proud of his school for achieving high student growth during the 2018-2019 school year, he looks forward to helping each individual achieve his or her best.

Sister Lucy Hennessy, missions leader and chairman of the Board of Directors for Pennybyrn at Maryfield addressed the Planning Board and give a brief history of the facility. “The sisters at Pennybyrn have been serving the Jamestown, High Point and Greensboro communities since our arrival in 1947. We serve a growing senior population,” said Sister Lucy. “We have approximately 350 residents that we serve every day. The Pennybyrn Healthcare Households serve approximately 125 residents, including many who have run out of resources and many who come to us to recover. “Over the years the Pennybyrn sisters have constantly looked for opportunities to serve the community in better ways. We are once again at a place where we are embarking on a special opportunity to serve the broader community. This is the heart of what we are today – the Lillian Congdon Transitional Rehab Center. This will enable us to continue to serve those individuals who come to Pennybyrn to recover from hospital stays or an acute episode. It will allow us to truly serve the person in the best way possible and help them to restore their

strength and return home as quickly and safely as possible. Hennessy added that the rezoning request will enable them to serve the community in a new and special way, serving aa growing senior population in a way that supports their quality of life and their ability to live life to the fullest. Jamestown Planning Director Matthew Johnson believes the request is justified. It is, however “technically inconsistent with our Comprehensive Plan,” he said.

With Johnson’s comment in mind, the Planning Board – with little discussion – unanimously approved the rezoning request. The Town Council will hear the rezoning request at its Oct. 15 meeting. In order to approve the rezoning, the Jamestown Town Council will have to approve an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan, which is currently under review. Johnson said the change would happen before the new Plan is approved.

Bernie Sanders and the anti-people crusade BY RICh LOWRY At least Bernie Sanders is an equal opportunity misanthrope. He doesn’t like rich people, and it turns out he doesn’t necessarily like poor people, either. At the recent CNN town hall on climate change, a questioner asked the socialist senator if he’d be “courageous” enough to endorse population control to save the planet. Sanders answered “yes,” and then, after referring to abortion rights, endorsed curtailing population growth, “especially in poor countries around the world where women do not necessarily want to have large numbers of babies.” He’s looking at you, sub-Saharan Africa. The Sanders riff is the latest instance of a rising anti-natalism on the left, which has gone from arguing that carbon emissions are a problem to arguing that human beings are a problem. They release carbon emissions, don’t they? Q.E.D. When a proposition has the support of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who questions the morality of having children, and Bill Nye the Science Guy, who has discussed punishing people for having children, it’s on the way to universal assent among a certain segment of soi-disant thoughtful progressives. A headline in The New York Times even asked, “Would Human Extinction Be a Tragedy?” Undergirding the anti-natalist position is the belief that we are facing a global catastrophe, such that additional babies will tip the planet into uninhabitability for everyone. This goes beyond the best evidence, and discounts the human capacity for adaptation that is one of our chief attributes. The view that human beings are an unsustainable drain on limited resources goes back to the 18th-century thinker

Thomas Malthus and, more recently, the Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich. In his 1968 book “The Population Bomb,” Ehrlich put an emphasis on overly fertile Third World countries, just as Bernie Sanders did. But if consumption and carbon emissions are the concern, it’s rich people in developed countries who are the bigger problem and should be dealt with accordingly (a task for which Sanders is dismayingly well-suited). As Benjamin Zycher of the American Enterprise Institute notes, rising incomes — considered an unalloyed good by anyone who experiences them — invariably increase energy consumption. What are we to make of an agenda that seeks to diminish the number of human beings overall and to make those who enjoy material prosperity less wealthy? At a more fundamental level, the antinatalists have a gross materialistic view of humanity. For them, we are a series of inputs and outputs, and if one particular output is considered undesirable (in this case, carbon emissions), it reduces the value of human beings altogether. No one who isn’t a cracked ideological extremist or perversely blinkered economist actually looks at people this way. It doesn’t account for relationships or for joy, for the wondrous distinctiveness of every person, no matter how poor or humble. People aren’t a burden; they are a resource and a gift. Any movement that regards them any other way is profoundly misguided and deeply anti-humane. Build windmills if you must, but don’t try to scare people out of having children — or much worse, facilitate abortions — in your zeal to shave some fraction of a degree off the global temperature 80 years from now. Does my dog have arthritis? BY SAM MAZZOTTA Paw’S cOrNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My black Lab, “Gordon,” is almost 12 years old. He has always been energetic, but lately on our walks he seems to get tired easily, slows down his walk, and whines from time to time. His hind legs seem to be stiff and he has a harder time laying down in his pet bed. Do you think he has arthritis? Will it affect his life? — Jeff in Silver Spring, Maryland DEAR JEFF: He does seem to be showing symptoms of arthritis. Jot down everything you see Gordon doing that seems different or “off,” and take those notes and your dog to the veterinarian. The vet can evaluate Gordon for arthritis — an inflammation of the joints seen frequently in older pets — and rule out any other underlying conditions. If Gordon has arthritis, there are lots

of medicines and therapies available to alleviate his pain — many of which are the same treatments used for humans, albeit in smaller doses. There’s no cure for the condition, but he still has years of life ahead and will be close to his old self with treatment. And it can keep Gordon’s weight down, which will ease the stress on his joints. Many owners have had good results by changing their pet’s diet. Dog foods formulated for senior pets can keep his nutrition on point. Allergen-free dog foods may yield good results, too. Try working with his vet to tweak Gordon’s diet a bit and see if there’s any improvement. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cedarwood Garden Club September meeting

The Cedarwood Garden Club had its first meeting of the 2019-20 season September 12 at the home of Cece Leonard. Cece, along with co-hostesses Cathy Lanham and Sherrie Richmond, served a variety of delicious refreshments to the 19 members who enjoyed the social hour Stacy Fogleman, club president, presided over the meeting. Due to the resignation of Becky Cooke, first vice-president, Shirley Haworth was selected to fill that position. The club has two major events taking place in November. Carol Fogleman will serve as co-ordinator for the District 5 Fall Board Meeting which our club will host November 5 at the Jamestown United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Betty LaBella, Carolyn McDaniels, Joan Foster, Lynette Smitherman, Sherrie Richmond, Jackie Lawrence, Jeanne Megel, Barbara Henry, and our newest member, Bob Harvey, share the duties associated with the event. The club will make bows to sell for the holidays as this year’s fund raiser. Doris Porter secured a room at Coldwell Banker where club members will meet November 14 for that purpose. Bow sizes and prizes will be decided later and methods of marketing the bows will be announced. Jeanne Megel took the “Spotlight” portion of the meeting. She gave a delightfully humorous account of her life’s journey from Colorado to Cedarwood, including her adventures in the jungles of the Amazon, in the deep blue while swimming with sharks, in her appearance in the Betty Crocker Cookbook, and in the cultivation and release of Monarch butterflies. The club will visit a Fairy Garden at The Stratford on October 10 followed by lunch at Lubrano’s. After the meeting members were invited to go outside and participate in the release of three Monarch butterflies that hatched during the meeting.
