Virus stops Lydia anniversary event If it wasn’t for railroad tracks being laid through the area in the mid-1800s, Jamestown may have remained a small village west of Deep River, around the area of what is now High Point City Lake Park. But the tracks came and the major business district moved east of Deep River, helping Jamestown to grow into the town it is today. But the railroad had a part in ending the growth of a young lady who saw her unfortunate death at the old sharp turn of East Main Street near the old tunnel under the tracks, constructed in 1916 by the North Carolina Railroad.

Although she never lived in Jamestown, her death 100 years ago gave Jamestown the notoriety of being the home of Lydia, the hitchhiking ghost. The Town of Jamestown was planning to hold an event in October recognizing the centennial of the town’s most famous ghost. The organizing committee didn’t get very far with the planning, however, before the coronavirus hit. Only one planning committee meeting managed to be held in January. Many in town didn’t know anything was being planned. Mayor Lynn Montgomery was on the committee. Her comments on the event were short. “Lydia, to be continued … ,” Montgomery wrote on

Despite virus, golf course sees revenue boost By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com An increase in rounds of golf played brought an increase in golf revenue at Jamestown Park Golf Course for August 2020 compared to the same month last year. There were nearly 500 more rounds played this year. Driving range use was up over 1,000 players and golf shop inventory was up approximately $1,400. Grill concessions were down because the grill was open for take-out only. Clubhouse rentals were down as well, as it was not available due to Covid-19 closings. Expenditures were down in August by approximately 17 percent compared to the previous year. The result is a net profit of approximately $17,000 in August 2020 as opposed to a net loss of approximately $23,000 last year. Year-to-date, the course is in the black by over $35,000 and rounds played are up nearly 15,500. John Crowe, golf maintenance superintendent, addressed the Town Council on Sept. 15 and said the rounds played were up about 25 percent since the course reopened after the six-week closing earlier this year due to the coronavirus. He is seeing a lot of new faces. “That’s good to see,” Crowe said. “[This] has

brought people out who haven’t played golf. It’s just packed out there.” He thanked the Council for deciding to close down the course for six-weeks, giving him the chance to do some things his crew doesn’t normally have a chance to do. Each year, the golf staff receives complaints about how firm the greens were, making the course hard to play. Not this year. “Aerification helped soften the greens so we didn’t get the normal complaints this year after we opened back up,” Crowe said. He added they also aerified the fairways and tee boxes. With an early spring, Crowe’s group found an active honeybee nest 25 yards away from the 15th green. “It’s a really cool thing to see. You just don’t see things like that every day. We accidently hit the tree with a mower. The bees came out swarming.” He noted that he was glad the chemicals used on the course were not harmful to the bees. The grounds crew worked on the microscopic nematodes on the course. Crowe said there are beneficial nematodes and parasitic nematodes and three of the most harmful kinds were found on the course. Nematodes damaged some of the greens that did not respond SEE gOLF, PAGe 2

her committee notebook. “We recognized June 1920 as the official anniversary, but at the time of planning there were already lots of plans for June – movies and concerts in the park,” she continued. “We were aiming for October for the cooler weather and having the sidewalk to the bridge open.” Author Michael Renegar has researched Lydia’s story for over 30 years and, along with his co-author Amy Greer, has determined that her name was not Lydia at all – it was Annie. Her middle initial, however was “L” and could have stood for the middle name of “Ludia.” Jamestown Mayor Lynn Montgomery and councilmembers georgia Nixon and Whereas urban lore says John Capes explore the original railroad underpass, known locally as Lydia’s tunnel, following the October 2019 groundbreaking ceremony for the East Main SEE LydIA, PAGe 6 Street sidewalk, which will pass through the underpass.

Pennybyrn hosts groundbreaking ceremonies By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Seven golden shovels, each tied with pretty ribbon, stood in a row on a mound of fresh earth. They awaited the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Lillian Congdon Transitional Rehab Center at Pennybyrn at Maryfield. The date, Sept. 24, was certainly significant. The Poor Servants of the Mother of God, a Roman Catholic order, was started in England on Sept 24, 1869. Sisters from that group arrived in High Point in 1947 with the mission of making lives better for others. The result was Maryfield, a convalescent home that has grown into Pennybyrn at Maryfield. This retirement community includes not only skilled nursing facilities, but also independent and assisted living housing that provide a continuum of care for residents. “Our founder, Mother Magdalen Taylor, felt we should serve God always, but not always in the same way,” said Sister Lucy Hennessy, missions leader and chairman of the Board of Directors for Pennybyrn at Maryfield. “As needs began to change, we realized we needed to change to meet them.” One of the latest changes is the new rehab center, which will face Penny Road and be the only standalone rehab in North Carolina. “We are committed to delivering the same service and quality that we

The Lillian Congdon Transitional Rehab Center will enhance inpatient rehabilitative care – a service Pennybyrn has provided alongside other care options for several years – for 24 individuals. It also will allow Pennybyrn the opportunity to expand their services to provide outpatient therapy. It will combine a multi-disciplinary approach to physical, occupational and speech therapy that allows patients to recover more quickly while helping prevent complications or relapses in healing.

The Story of North Carolina Popular Music, from Blind Boy Fuller and Doc Watson to Nina Simone and Superchunk,” helps set the record straight. The connections between gospel music, both black and white, run throughout the book. Menconi gives Ray Charles credit for “turning sacred gospel into secular soul, a new style that translated religious rapture into much earthier feelings.” Charles transformed a gospel song, “It Must Be Jesus,” into a “randy song” called “I Got a Woman.” Menconi writes, “Changing that song’s subject matter from uppercase Him to lowercase her scandalized the church, but it caused a pop music sensation.” A Winston-Salem group, “The 5 Royales,” brought evangelistic fervor to secular music even before Charles. The group was one of the top R&B bands in the 1950s. Though forgotten by many, the group is immortalized by a street in WinstonSalem named after them. Menconi writes about a Charlotte group called Jodeci whose “spin on hip-hop soul was churching it up with gospel feeling. Whether pleading for sin or salvation, they had the same urgency.” In 1992, one member of Jodeci told Menconi, “Someday I’m sure we’ll all go back to gospel because that’s where our roots are.” (Oct 18, 20) Maybe he was speaking for some of the rest of us. D.G. Martin hosts “North Carolina Bookwatch,” Sunday 3:30 pm and Tuesday at 5:00 pm on UNC-TV. The program also airs on the North Carolina Channel Tuesday at 8:00 pm and other times.

to treatment until Crowe discovered the right chemical to treat the them. “Treatment began and the greens have improved,” he said. Repairing irrigation system leaks in the 11 miles of underground piping kept the crew busy. “We fixed 64 leaks last year,” Crowe said. “It’s a consistent problem, but I think less this year than last year. “We try to stay on top of it. We’ve noticed some more that are popping up.” In his report, Town Manager Kenny Cole added there is a drainage problem on the course. “This has been an ongoing project at the golf course,” Cole said. “Most of the original storm drainage pipes have deteriorated over the years. “When time allows, Public Services staff will replace the old pipes.” Fall preparation of the course is underway. The crew is mowing the fairways and greens slightly higher to combat for possible winter-kill, which killed many greens in the area several years ago. “I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish,” Crowe said. He noted that readers of Yes, Weekly recently voted Jamestown Golf Course the second-best course to play in Guilford County behind Sedgefield, a private club.

Couch Theatre By AMy ANdERSON It feels like months since I’ve seen the inside of my office. While I’m grateful that I can work from any space with a power outlet and a pot of reasonable coffee, I miss it. Good relationships, conversation and camaraderie aren’t unattainable in the company of my schooling-from-home kids, but it’s not the same as being shoulder to shoulder with your work fam. But the office ain’t always peaches and sunshine, right? So, here I present a few movies that will nip your office nostalgia in the bud, or at least keep you laughing until life can return to normal.

Brussels sprouts shed their bad reputation sprouts are carefully selected, stored and cooked properly, they have a bright color, a crisp texture and a delicious flavor. When selecting the vegetable, look for small, young, vibrant green, tightly compacted sprouts. Brussels sprouts are delicious boiled or steamed until tender, but still slightly crisp or roasted to bring out their natural sugars. Use sprouts that are all about the same size to ensure they will cook quickly and evenly. As a rule, Brussels sprouts cook in about 6 to 7 minutes. Be careful not to overcook Brussels sprouts because they will release sinigrin, a natural gas with a sulfur-like smell. This recipe for Hashed Brussels Sprouts is flavorful and delicious. The quick cooking time and the addition of the garlic, onion and mustard complement the sprouts and showcase its flavors in a unique way. Try it, and you’re sure to become a Brussels sprouts lover, too!

By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva Long before Brussels sprouts became a trendy vegetable, my family, especially, my daughter, Deanna, were huge fans. My mother was raised on a farm and loved to grow all types of green vegetables. She was especially skilled with properly preparing Brussels sprouts and other typically stinky and slimy vegetables — I’m talking about you, cabbage and okra! While Brussels sprouts have only recently become popular in America, sprouts have been a culinary mainstay in the southern Netherlands and Northern Europe since the 1600s. They may have been grown in Belgium as early as 1200, and are named for Brussels, its capital. These tiny members of the cabbage and mustard family also have cancer-fighting phytochemicals, are high in vitamin C and are a reliable source of folate, vitamin A and potassium. Since Brussels sprouts are so good for you, why do so many people despise them? In a web poll taken several years ago, more than 78,000 adults weighed in on the foods they hate. Brussels sprouts finished No. 8 on the list of most hated foods. The comments section overflowed with horror stories about being forced to eat the vegetable as a child. One thing I noticed about the readers’ comments was that the Brussels sprouts they were served were muddy colored, overcooked and smelled bad. When Brussels

An adult day-enrichment center also will be added to the campus as well as refurbishment of the current healthcare households and assisted living areas of the community. “Hundreds of hours have been put into the process as we have moved forward carefully and with faith,” Newman said. “The future belongs to those who prepare today,” Hollingsworth said at the groundbreaking. “We believe in this project and are asking you to believe in it too. The others took place at separate locations on the 71- acre campus. The Pennybyrn expansion includes 42 new independent living apartments. “The presales of these apartments, which began in early March, have been so very well received, with only eight available at this time,” said Rich Newman, Pennybyrn president. “This reflects the interest and growing need in the broader community.” Other improvements to existing facilities include expanding the

Lydia died in 1923, Renegar found newspaper accounts of an accident at the sharp turn on High Point Road and the death of Annie Jackson in June of 1920. He also found her death certificate. Most of the information fits. Lydia was actually Annie. Renegar and Greer have written Looking for Lydia: The Thirty Year Search for the Jamestown Hitchhiker, which is available on Amazon. High Point Road is now called East Main Street. It used to have a sharp curve on the south side leading into the railroad underpass on the Jamestown side. Vehicles no longer use the one-lane tunnel since the curve was eliminated and the road re-routed around 1940. When the road was re-routed, Lydia/Annie apparently moved to the new road to catch a ride. (See sidebar.) But soon pedestrians will be using the original tunnel. The Town of Jamestown is nearing completion of a sidewalk proj-

ect along East Main Street with one section running through the old “Lydia’s Tunnel”, as it has come to be known. The tunnel is already popular with ghost hunters and paranormal investigators. The sidewalk should draw more people to the spot, as the tunnel will now be accessible. Will the new sidewalk thru the tunnel scare off the ghost, or will she come out to greet passersby? She only comes out

on foggy, rainy nights, … so you might think twice about an evening stroll. As for an event recognizing the anniversary of Lydia’s death, Mayor Montgomery believes it might happen in 2021. “Hopefully, next year,” Montgomery said. “I guess right now, we are still playing wait and see, but everyone is still onboard with the idea. “Her spirit lives on.”

There are several versions of Lydia’s story but the basic story goes: It was a foggy, rainy night in 1924. A man driving along High Point Road (U.S. 70) in Jamestown sees a young woman by the side of the road, dressed in a white ball gown, trying to flag down a ride. He stops to pick her up and she gets in the back seat, giving him an address in High Point. Presumably, she tells him her name is Lydia. When they get to the house, the driver gets out to open her door – and she’s gone. The man goes up to the house and learns (from her mother) that Lydia died in a car crash in 1923 on her way back from a dance in Raleigh. She has appeared to people since. Many other cities in the United States and even around the world have a similar story of what has become known as the Vanishing Hitchhiker. It has become urban legend that many people swear is true.
