Old Christmas celebrated in North Carolina by carol brooks freeLAnce Writer cab1hp@gmail.com

When is the proper time to take down the Christmas decorations? Christmas Day? The day after? New Year’s Day? In many communities along coastal North Carolina and several other areas, Christmas isn’t even observed until Jan. 6, so it is appropriate to leave the decorations up until then. The Outer Banks is known for celebrating Old Christmas. The town of Rodanthe, on Hatteral Island, is believed to hold the larg-

est party anywhere and, as you would expect from the reason, oysters are the main food attraction. After a few days’ rest following his big night, Santa Claus might show up to hand out goodies. But revelers aren’t anticipating Santa as much as they are waiting for the “ghost” of Old Buck, based on the legend of a wild bull that terrorized the community long ago. Old Buck would come out of hiding only once a year, Jan. 5. Old Buck’s costume has been described as a pole covered with bed quilts or blankets and a steer’s head with a pair of horns. Around

his neck hangs a bell. Two men hide underneath the blankets and dance around so wildly that the children are scared – but the grownups know better. It is believed by some that Old Buck is a way to connect with the past and many believe their departed loved ones are with them – albeit in spirit only – for that day. The character is possibly a derivation of an old custom from ancient English mumming, or pantomiming, The Mummers’ Parade, with it’s extravagant costumes, is still held in Philadelphia where it see carolina, PAGe 2

Givesboro returns, bringing charity and solidarity to downtown Greensboro by ian mcdoWell freeLAnce Writer “Givesboro shows what our locally-owned business c o m m u nity here in Greensboro are made of,” said Michelle Kennedy, executive director of the Interactive Resource Center and At-Large Representative to the Greensboro City Council. “It consists of compassionate folks who want to work together toward solutions to homelessness.” “For our second year in a row, we’re working with local businesses to support the IRC, a local nonprofit that helps the homeless community, while also encouraging shoppers to come downtown to shop, save money and buy local,” said Jenn Graf, owner of Vintage to Vogue on South Elm Street. “It’s a win-win situation all the way around! Greatness is not what you have; it’s what you give.” The collective effort organized by Graf, in collaboration with a variety of downtown and other local businesses, works in several ways. Shoppers purchase a $10 discount card that can be presented at participating retailers, restaurants and businesses throughout Greensboro’s downtown

area. Customers at those participating establishments can also make donations of small change via the Givesboro tins beside each resident’s cash register. Some participating businesses give customers the option of rounding up their sales, with the extra change going towards the Givesboro’ program. JMS students use national program to benefit local animal shelter by norma b. dennis freeLAnce Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com December, more than any other month, seems to be a time of giving. When looking for a way they could give, students in the EC class at Jamestown Middle School decided to participate in Operation Santa Paws, a nationwide project that provides gifts to animals living in shelters across the United States. They learned about the project in November from a WFMY News 2 television broadcast. “We do a different project each month and felt Operation Santa Paws would be good for our December one,” said teacher Justyna Szalc, Publicity played a big part in the success of the class project, which was opened to other classes, as well as to the community. Letters were sent to classes throughout the school, to parents and to area businesses asking for donations of pet food, blankets, cleaning supplies, pet toys, money and anything else that might make the animals’ stay at the shelter a bit better. All donations were tax deductible. Staff and parents also approached businesses in elijah points to the decorated door of his classperson to seek donations. alexander Carpenter named first recipient of Patrick Womack Musical Scholarship Fund After Charles Womack, the publisher of YES! Weekly and Jamestown News, lost his brother, Patrick, to cancer this August, he wanted to immortalize Patrick’s memory and his passion for music. So, Charles and his family set up a musician scholarship fund in Patrick’s name and raised $3,235 through GoFundMe. Outside of the GoFundMe, Charles said the fund had received an additional

$25,000, with more donations continuing to roll in. According to the GoFundMe page, “The Patrick Womack Music Scholarship Fund has been established to help young musicians in the Triad of North Carolina with funding for quality musical training and instructional classes focusing on, but not limited to, classical and jazz music. Patrick loved all types of music, but later in life fell in love with classical music. And though he was an accomplished player, he began taking piano lessons,

and his knowledge and passion were reborn. Through this rebirth of musical awareness, Patrick felt strongly that all musicians could benefit from quality instruction and music education, and wanted to help others benefit as he did. ‘The money can’t go to bands. Bands break up,’ said Patrick. ‘It has to be for music education and instruction. But if there’s a student who’s really deserving and is having to borrow or rent an instrument, we see Womack, PAGe 2

Last Thursday, Dec. 12, Alexander Carpenter, 14, an eighthgrade cellist from Kernodle Middle School in Greensboro, was chosen to receive $4,000 of the scholarship fund. Alexander is originally from Patrick and Charles’s hometown of Danville, Virginia, and he said his parents chose the cello as an instrument for him to play. “I really like how the cello sounds and the actual parts you are playing of the cello,” Alexander said. “A lot of the parts are just keeping the beat for other instruments, but when the cello gets a solo part, it sounds really good.” Alexander said he enjoys playing classical music on his cello, but he also enjoys the pop songs he learns with his class as well.

“I am excited because we can use this money to get a new cello and a case because the case that I have for my cello is fabric,” he said. Alexander explained that he would also have to get different sized cellos as he grows. The cello he will get now through the use of the scholarship funds will last him until he goes to college. “We are very appreciative,” said Stacey Carpenter, Alexander’s mom. “It is great that it has come full circle because of the connection from Danville to Greensboro, and some of the family members knowing Patrick.” Stacey described her son as always making good grades in school and always having an artistic side. She said he would memorize songs when he was little and sing them. His father, Joe Carpenter, was in bands when he was younger and played the viola and guitar. Joe said one of his older sisters dated the bass player in the band that Patrick played

in when he was younger, and that he saw Patrick perform a number of times as well. In November 2017, Stacey shared that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 triplepositive breast cancer and had undergone treatment for a year and a half. The family’s connection to Patrick was apparent to Charles. Charles noted that Patrick was extremely specific on how to do the scholarship, and he expressed his worry about finding the perfect fit for the scholarship. “The moment I met Alexander and his family, and all the local connections kept popping up, it was obvious Patrick had connected us,” Charles said. “From Alexander being our father’s and my middle name, to his mom and dad growing up in Danville, Virginia, attending the same high school, having similar friends and his sister dating the bass player in Pat’s band. His father commented that he’d even been over to hear Pat’s band play at our house several

Alexander said he had been the first-chair all three years in his school’s orchestra. During his first time attending the All-County concert, he actually got to play fourth-chair, making him the only cellist from Kernodle that made it to All-County. Alexander has also played with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s summer camp orchestra this past summer. “This [scholarship] will

At midnight on the eve of Old Christmas, elder trees are said to blossom, cows to kneel in prayer and the rooster to crow all night. Why do some communities still celebrate Old Christmas? In 1582 the Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian calendar, but Protestant England didn’t recognize the new calendar until 1752 because they would not have Pope Gregory XIII telling them what to do. However, by 1752 England was 11 days off from the rest of Europe, so the country decided to drop the eleven days, move Christmas from Jan. 6 back to Dec. 25 to conform with the rest of the continent. This did not set well with many people who wanted their 11 days back. The

only day resource center for those currently facing, experiencing or coming out of homelessness.” According to IRC associate director Kristina Singleton, the organization’s day campus provides a variety of services to people dealing with those issues, including assistance getting licenses or IDs, jobs and medical care. Weekly last year, when the Givesboro program was being inaugurated. “Not to mention, all money spent in a local business and as part of this campaign helps contribute to our local economy.” “It’s very important we help each other out,” said Easa Hanhan, co-owner of Jerusalem Market. “When businesses and customers help each other, it just makes downtown a growing and better place. tradition of Old Christmas came with the English to the American colonies and many of these people continued celebrating Christmas on what had become Jan. 6. As time passed, most began to recognize Dec. 25 as Christmas Day but held on to their old date as well, thereby celebrating the holiday twice. In his book, The Southern Christmas Book, author Harnett T. Kane writes: “In conversation with the natives of more remote areas [of the Outer Banks], I have several times been informed firmly, almost angrily, ‘Dec. 25 just ain’t Christmas. My grandpa said it, and I say it too. And my folks’ go right on having it on the real day.’” We’re all familiar with the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The earliest version appeared in a 1780 children’s book as a memory game.

GUILFORD MEMORIAL PARK

Although we sing it before Christmas, the 12 days actually begin on Christmas day. Jan. 5 is also known as Twelfth Night, the twelfth day after Christmas. William Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, or What You Will was written to be performed as entertainment on Twelfth Night. It was first performed in 1602. The Feast of the Epiphany follows on Jan. 6, traditionally the day the wise men brought gifts to baby Jesus. Amish celebrate Old Christmas but not like on the North Carolina coast and some mountain folk in Tennessee have a tradition that you should never lend anything to anyone on that day if you ever expect to get it back. So, if people complain that your decorations are still up on Jan. 4, tell them you are observing Old Christmas and won’t take them down until after Jan. 6. Christmas is not just a day, after all, it’s a season.

Plenty of ways to give this holiday season

As we celebrate and enjoy this holiday season, let’s not forget that there are people beyond our immediate circle of family and friends who could benefit from our love and generosity. Over the past decade, I’ve been able to showcase scores of community organizations on my Triad Today television show, and in the process, I’ve learned that there are several ways we can help these agencies help others. The first is to donate goods, the second is to donate money, and the third is to donate our time. Of course, some nonprofit groups can benefit from all three types of giving. In no particular order, below are just a few organizations to which you might lend your support.

Bucket lists for dying pets? By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner

The Victim President By Rich lowry

President Donald Trump’s impeachment letter to Nancy Pelosi is nothing if not sincere. The missive establishes, if there were any doubt, that Trump hates impeachment with a passion, and he expresses his contempt in his own inimitable voice — scornful, hyperbolic, colloquial, on brand (Russia Witch Hunt, Do Nothing Democrats, etc.) and, above all, aggrieved. We’ve never had a president in the modern era who has actively cultivated an image of victimhood, a posture that once would have been considered whiny and weak, but that Trump has, through his personal alchemy, made into a kind of political strength. It is inevitable that a president — carrying out impossibly weighty responsibilities, in a very public capacity, while the opposition and press fasten on every peccadillo — is going to feel besieged, misunderstood or otherwise unfairly treated. This naturally often leads to private venting, brooding, plotting and perhaps even an overly defensive or peevish outburst in public. The Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck captured what might have been the experience of more than one president when he reportedly told his personal assistant one morning, “I could not sleep, I hated all night.” With the exception of, most notably, Andrew Johnson, who openly raged against his partisan enemies, the presidential mode is to try to keep feelings of persecution under wraps. But not Trump, who unashamedly airs these feelings and uses them as a weapon. This has been his practice his entire adult life, and it has worked for him. He sought to outlast and wear down anyone in a dispute, unwilling to be, as he sees it,

cheated of money, attention or glory. As he put it in an interview early in the Republican nominating contest in 2015, “I am a whiner and I keep whining and whining until I win.” One of his favorite words is “unfair.” Part of the strength of Trump’s bond with his base is that his voters feel sneered at and attacked, and so identify with his plaints. A passage in his letter to Pelosi that truly lands is his bitter account of the Russian investigation, during which the FBI abused its powers, the most outlandish speculation was routine fare on cable news, and a special counsel investigation blighted the first couple of years of his administration. He’s right to point out that impeachment is, essentially, an extension of this episode. It might be the best example since Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables” line of an affront that both Trump and his voters can take personally. Trump will wave the bloody flag of impeachment until November as an example of how Democrats tried to get rid of him — and disregard his voters. The timing on the cusp of an election year means impeachment works perfectly for this argument both looking backward and forward; it (partly) invalidates the 2016 election, while also short-circuiting the 2020 vote. Still, Donald Trump occupies the most powerful office in the world, bedecked with all the majesty and pomp and circumstance that a republic can muster. The media hangs on his every word, and his name, long after his buildings are gone, will remain part of American history. This is not the profile of anyone’s victim, and Trump would do more honor to the office if he brooded more and vented less. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t understand this trend of making a “bucket list” of things to see and do with a dog once they get old or ill. Why bother? Does the dog understand that it’s supposed to be checking off this list? Why didn’t the owner make the time to do these things when their pet was younger and healthier? I think owners should just concentrate on making their pets comfortable. — Dottie J., Philadelphia DEAR DOTTIE: There’s a car commercial that ran on U.S. television where an owner takes his beloved senior dog on a road trip to do a whole bunch of things on a list, like run on the beach, play Frisbee, eat steak and have one final adventure. It’s a nice spot, but its goal is to sell cars, not bucket lists.

I can tell you that most pet “bucket lists” are much tamer and nothing to get grumpy about. Most owners concentrate on keeping their pets happy and comfortable in their final months. If they’re able to get around without too much pain, a trip to the park or the beach is certainly a possibility. If a dog can keep a steak down, or a cat enjoy a piece of fish (or Doritos, one of my cats’ favorite treats), even better. Reading comments from veterinarians about pets’ last days, it is clear that being with their owner to the end is a great comfort to pets. A bucket list is fine if it maximizes time spent with a pet to let them know they’re loved and cared for. Talk with the vet to understand the best ways to keep pets happy and as pain-free as possible.

Turmeric can be helpful for arthritis pain by keiTh roach, m.d. to Your Good heALth DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 88 and have had osteoarthritis in my hands and knees since I was in my 50s. I began taking Tylenol and Advil for pain. But on a recommendation from a health food store clerk, I started taking turmeric. Since that first dose, I have never had to take any pain medication again. I also have not had a knee replacement. My specialist is very pleased with my condition, and encourages my use of turmeric. I plan to up the dose from 150 mg daily because of research that shows its benefits in avoiding Alzheimer’s disease. — D.D.L. DEAR D.D.L.: Turmeric has been shown to be helpful in some people with osteoarthritis, and is unlikely to have serious side effects; however, stomach upset is possible, and turmeric should be used with caution in people on warfarin or other anticoagulants. However, there is no good evidence showing that turmeric prevents or treats dementia. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been hearing a lot about making yogurt at home. Is homemade yogurt a recipe for food poisoning? — H.C. DEAR H.C.: Homemade yogurt is easy to make, can be more healthy than store-bought as it has very little sugar, and can be made very safely with minimal precautions. The key is to make sure the milk is fresh and sterile, then to carefully add in healthy bacteria. All you need to do is boil fresh milk to a bare simmer (to kill any unhealthy bacteria); cool it down to 100-110 F (37-42 C), which is an optimal temperature for growth of the healthy bacteria that help prevent the growth of unhealthy bacteria or yeast; stir in a few tablespoons of plain yogurt with active healthy bacterial cultures; and keep it in a warm place for six to 12 hours or so. You can use the yogurt you just made as the starter for the next batch. Add in some pureed fresh fruit, and you have a healthier, tastier and cheaper yogurt than you can buy at the store. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A healthy new year without dieting by angela shelF medearis Kitchen diVA

This is the time of year when many people start diets. But after a few weeks of not getting enough to eat or eating food that does not taste good, most dieters give up, having “failed” once again. The truth is, though, it is the diets that are the failures, not the people who try them. Instead of improving health, dieting is often harmful and counterproductive. Health statistics show that only 5% to 10% of those who diet and are able to lose weight are able to maintain that weight loss for more than a short time. Most dieters quickly regain the lost pounds — plus a few extra — and end up heavier than they started. Diets promote unhealthy eating habits, often by eliminating nutritious foods. Dieters are encouraged to ignore internal body signals of hunger and fullness. Eventually, the ability to respond appropriately to these normal physiological processes is lost. Chronically hungry people become obsessed with food and are likely to overeat when an opportunity to do so presents itself. This year, instead of trying yet another diet, resolve to make a positive change for good health. Focus on taking one step at a time, as changing behavior and attitudes is difficult and takes time. Here are some great tips from Linda Rellergert, regional nutrition specialist at St. Charles County University of Missouri Extension:
