All shows run from 5pm to 7pm and include free live music, family activities, face painting, henna tattoos, R&B wines, Peter’s Kettle Corn, free raffles and much more. Summer Beats features a range of styles from classic ‘70’s and ‘80’s hits, Sinatra standards and Motown to surf rock, Latin jazz and timeless pop/soul. Can’t wait to see you there! Be sure to bring new backpacks, crayons, pencils, pens, spiral notebooks, binders and other school supplies to donate to the Equipped 4 Success School Supply Drive, which benefits local low-income families and ensures that all Alameda students will have the supplies they need when school starts up again in the fall. On Parade Once voted “Best Hometown Celebration,” Alameda’s beloved 4th of July parade is back and better than ever.
S
tep aside, New York City. With the longest parade route in the U.S., Alameda’s 4th of July Parade has NYC’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade beat. Alameda’s parade boasts more than 170 floats and 2,500 participants, and is enjoyed each year by more than 25,000 spectators. This year’s event celebrates the power of Alameda and features Christopher Seiwald as its grand marshal and Golden State Warriors champion Harrison Barnes as its guest of honor. This year’s parade also features the largest group of student bands ever to be part of the event. The parade steps off at 10am at the corner of Lincoln and Park. From park, it turns right onto Otis Drive, right onto Grand Avenue, then left on Central and right on Webster, finishing at Lincoln Avenue. Park Street Faire It’s Park Street or bust on July 27th and 28th for the annual Park Street Art & Wine Faire.

he Park Street Business Association is proud to present the 29th Annual Park Street Art & Wine Faire. The event will be held 10am to 6pm July 27-28 with most activities located on Park, between Encinal and Buena Vista avenues. Weekend activities will include more than 250 art and craft vendors, live music on two stages, a special kids’ area, a variety of festival food vendors and beer & wine sales. This year’s event features the return of The Sun Kings. Lead member Drew Harrison states, “We are more than ready to return to where we started! The Encinal Stage turns into a happy, pulsating throng of generations dancing and singing along with the band. Looking forward to seeing everyone!” Also on tap for the weekend is Waterballerz, a new and exciting activity where young participants enter an oversized inflatable ball and can run, jump, flip and float on water. “Waterballs are not only fun for the kids, but spectators get a kick out of watching the young ones try to keep their balance or attempt to do somersaults – like giant hamsters balls,” says PSBA Executive Director Robb Ratto. Trabocco Introducing Trabocco, Alameda’s newest restaurant, coming this fall to South Shore Center.
T
rabocco, a new restaurant founded by Alameda residents Giuseppe and Christine Naccarelli, will open this fall at Alameda South Shore Center. Boasting a 4,700-square-foot Center Court space designed by Lev Weisbach of Weisbach architecture|design, Trabocco will have a 90-seat main dining room, 16-seat private wine room, 30-seat bar area and 56-seat outdoor dining patio. Chef Giuseppe is a native of Palombaro, Italy and, when crafting Trabocco’s menu, he plans to combine traditional Italian recipes with modern versions of classic dishes. Expect authentic thin crust pizza as well as rustic baked and roasted delicacies from a wood-burning oven, meat and fish on the rotisserie and fresh pastas and breads made in-house daily. “Trabocco’s owners are passionate about food, and they are committed to creating a restaurant that will be a lively gathering place for locals as well as a destination dining spot for the entire East Bay,” said Michael Phillips of Jamestown. Creating Community

amestown, owner of South Shore Center, is deeply committed to supporting community. They show their committment in all kinds of ways, from the publication of this newsletter to local-level involvement in community events like Street Food Thursdays and their support of projects like Equipped 4 Success. Jamestown’s committment to community also shows up in its design processes. From the very beginning, Jamestown saw South Shore Center’s open-air layout and walkable public corridors as an opportunity for creating better community spaces. This past winter, the City of Alameda approved new facade design guidelines that have enabled Jamestown to move forward with some of its most visible community-centered design improvements yet. Old Navy’s new facade is the first of several planned facade upgrades designed to create an eclectic, dynamic “main street” feel through the heart of South Shore Center. The facade designs are complemented with comfortable, attractive new furniture and seating, which encourages guests to linger and enjoy all that South Shore Center has to offer.

Going Green at South Shore Center I
n 2010, Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda (CASA) partnered with Jessica Robinson, Miss Alameda, to develop the “Miss Alameda Says Compost!� program, which encourages Alameda restaurants to set up recycle and compost programs.
Jessica worked closely with Sean Bolin and Steven Daniels of Jamestown (owner of South Shore Center) to design a program that would would meet the needs of all eleven restaurants and the other merchants of the center. Each restaurant received tailored instructions, training for the kitchen staff and internal blue and green containers for separating the recyclable and compostable materials. Their efforts reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 482 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. CASA acknowledged South Shore Center for its leadership at the City of Alameda Climate Protection Forum on April 24th, 2013. As the premiere retail center in Alameda, South Shore will be a model for expanding recycling and composting at all restaurants and retail centers throughout the city.

s summer settles in and my travel schedule heats up, I’m pleasantly reminded of how a bit of warm weather brings out the best in many American towns. With recent visits to creative communities such as San Luis Obispo, CA, a place that has quite impressively been deemed the happiest and friendliest city in the country, and Chattanooga, TN, Outside Magazine’s Best Town Ever, and home to where I learned to row, I’ve found energizing recreation at every turn. Even big cities are going back to nature. Ponce City Market in Atlanta, GA is creating organic rooftop gardens, outdoor amusements and serving as a link to dynamic neighborhoods with the new BeltLine, a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit. When I’m not feeling like a rugged, outdoor excursion this summer (which, let’s face it, is often) I can only hope to be found in Charleston, SC, drink in hand, poolside at the new premier swim and social center, Mixson Bath & Racquet Club. What’s my next adventure? I just signed up for sailing lessons to begin this fall on the Hudson River in NYC, near my home office at Jamestown’s Chelsea Market.
