Food Truck Phenomenon
Food trucks are one of the most popular phenomenons in dining these days, and now Off the Grid is bringing street food to Alameda South Shore Center
N
othing brings people together like food, and food trucks are a great way to experience new food. That’s why the crew at Off the Grid takes such pride in the weekly street food markets they’ve developed all over the Bay Area. Now, beginning June 2nd, Off the Grid and Jamestown will be bringing the food truck phenomenon to Alameda South Shore Center. 8-10 food trucks will gather each Saturday from 11am to 3pm in the parking lot in front of Petco. Each week will bring new faces and flavors to South Shore Center. “Street food markets are great for building community,” says Jamestown event specialist Shena Sabens. “I can’t tell you how many old friends I’ve seen and business connections I’ve made while wandering through our street food markets.” For more information about South Shore Center’s street food market, visit our facebook page at facebook.com/ SouthShoreCenter.

Alameda Beauty Center
Alameda Beauty Center, the island’s one-stop shop for hair care and beauty supplies since 1985, is still going strong in 2012
P
eter Schamoni and his father Eric Schamoni opened the Alameda Beauty Center 27 years ago. Eric had been in the cosmetology business for years, and Peter had a background in retail. Together, they created what was then a truly revolutionary retail concept: a specialty beauty store. No mere drugstore, they envisioned a one-stop shop for all hair care, skin care and nail care needs, including exclusive products that were impossible to find elsewhere on the island. Today, Alameda Beauty Center is more cutting edge than ever, with exclusive high-end product lines like Philosophy, Smashbox Cosmetics, Bare Minerals and Dermalogica Skin Care. Alameda Beauty Center also has stylists and an aesthetician on staff to provide a full range of beauty services. Why drive off the island for hair and beauty supplies when you can find miraculous anti-aging serums like Dermalogica’s AGE smartTM multivitamin power recover masque right down the road at South Shore Center? Peter and the rest of Alameda Beauty Center’s educated and helpful staff are always ready to match you with products that will pamper and protect your hair, skin and nails. Give them a call at (510) 522-6802.

The History of Bourbon
Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as Creative Manager for Jamestown. This quarter, George explores the history of Bourbon.
B
ourbon is very trendy these days. Normally, I sniff at trendy things. Happily, in the case of bourbon, “trendy” is also enduring.
Bourbon was invented in the late 1700s by a Baptist preacher named Elijah Craig. Craig built his distillery in Fayette County, VA (later Kentucky, after Kentucky broke off from Virginia in 1792). Craig’s barrels were stamped with the county name, and his whiskey soon became synonymous with “Bourbon.” All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. To qualify as a bourbon, a whiskey must be made from at least 51% corn grain. My favorite bourbon (currently) is an ultra-small batch, 14-year-old variety called Black Maple Hill. I like to sip it straight, preferably while conversing with fellow bourbon lovers like Ryan McLaughlin, bartender at Abattoir in Atlanta, GA and Harper McClure, chef de cuisine at The Federalist in Washington, D.C. Though I prefer my bourbon straight, it’s also fantastic in cocktails. Ryan from Abattoir recommends a drink he invented called “To All a Good Night,” which mixes bourbon with repasado tequila! Ask Harper McClune at The Federalist in D.C. to recommend his favorite bourbon!

Student Success
The Alameda Education Foundation introduces Summer Enrichment Camps for K-12 students.
A
lameda is known for its excellent schools, and the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) is a major reason why. Since 1982, AEF has supported Alameda public schools by providing funds and resources to supplement the opportunities available for Alameda’s more than 10,000 students. AEF runs a competitive, year-round sports program for middle school students. The Adopt-A-Classroom program provides $500 donations directly to classroom teachers. AEF raises thousands of dollars each year for music, art and drama. The after-school enrichment program offers a wide array of classes including arts, languages, science and much more for thousands of elementary and middle school students. This summer, AEF is launching Summer Enrichment Camps. Camps include carpentry, cooking, dance, drama, math, science and soccer, among many others, for K-12 students. AEF is particularly excited about two language immersion camps in Mandarin and Spanish. More information on AEF and Summer Camp registration is available at www.alamedaeducation.org.

Faces of Alameda
Meet Ally Krueger, project manager for Jamestown at Alameda South Shore Center
Q. So, when you’re not running around South Shore Center, what do you like to do? A. I like to hang out with my husband, 1-year-old son and our dog, Dexter, hiking & exploring the Bay Area as a family. Q. Are there any Alameda events you’re particularly excited about this summer? A. I’m really looking forward to celebrating the 4th of July in Alameda this year. There are so many fun events going on, starting with the Mayor’s parade, then followed by the Jumpin’ & Jivin’ Jubilee and John Lee Hooker Jr. at South Shore’s Summer Beats concert series. I’m bringing my family to Alameda this year, and I can’t wait to see my son in the bounce house we’ll have for the kids during the concert. Q. We’ve noticed that South Shore Center partners with a lot of different nonprofits. Are there any exciting charity partnerships in the works? A. We’re looking forward to working with some of our partners from last year: Alameda Education Foundation, Alameda Parks & Recreation, as well as others. I also just met with the new Alameda-based organization, Givegoods. Givegoods focuses on converting the members and donors of local charities into the customers of local businesses. I was impressed with their model to support both local charities and local businesses.
