New Name, New Look Alameda South Shore Center debuts its new name and new look this July. Find out more about the new owner Jamestown Properties and their future plans for the Center

I

n Late 2010, the former Alameda Towne Center property changed hands. Now the new owner Jamestown Properties has given the shopping destination a new tagline, “Come Shop at the Beach” and returned its name to Alameda South Shore Center.

Regarding the name change, Jamestown Properties said, “It is clear that Alamedans value the center’s unique beachfront location and rich history. We listened, we agreed, and we responded.” Other improvements Jamestown plans for the Center include establishing a comprehensive wayfinding program, developing more welcoming common areas with additional seating and improved lighting, establishing a new website and engaging its merchants, their clients and the community at large with a quarterly newsletter, the Alameda Beacon. Additionally, Jamestown plans to pioneer a number of sustainability initiatives on-site. Founded in 1983, Jamestown has headquarters in Atlanta, GA and Cologne, Germany with additional offices in New York City, San Francisco, CA. and Washington, D.C. Jamestown’s background with landmark properties includes One Times Square in New York, home to the internationally recognized New Year’s Eve ball drop; Chelsea Market, a historic biscuit manufacturing complex redeveloped as a thriving mixed-use gourmet market and office building in New York’s Chelsea district; and Pacific Place, a mixed-use project near San Francisco’s Union Square. Street Food Man about town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as Creative Manager for Jamestown Properties. This quarter, George explores Street Food.

W

hy is it that when Americans think of street food, we picture corndogs and funnel cakes? Street food, especially as it’s being done today, is nothing like those stomach-aches-on-a-stick found at carnivals of yesteryear. From farm-to-truck fare from Grace’s Goodness in Georgia to sizzling Mama’s Empanadas in San Francisco, today’s street food is all about the freshest locally sourced ingredients cooked right in front of you. In addition to being delicious and affordable, street food also helps build community. That’s why Jamestown Properties is investing in street food related events in places like Midtown Atlanta (facebook.com/MidtownATL), Mixson in Charleston, SC (mixson.com) and Warehouse Row in Chattanooga, TN (warehouserow.net). So, if your only experience with street food is a greasy carnival funnel cake, consider checking out the street food scene in your town. You might be surprised at the tastiness to be found on trucks these days.

Young Songwriters Young songwriters join some of the Bay Area’s most seasoned musicians for songwriting workship this summer

A

lameda South Shore Center and the Alameda Education Foundation are pairing up to provide Alameda’s young songwriters a chance to learn from and jam with veteran Bay Area musicians. From 1pm to 3:45pm on Saturday, August 27, young songwriters will meet at Center Court Stage to explore the craft of songwriting with notables such as grammy-award winning violinist Calvin Kealooa, drummer D.C. Carter, guitarist Patrick McKenna, keyboardist Jim Knowles and vocalist Allen Lam. At 5:30pm, the veterans and young songwriters will perform their works live as part of the Summer Beats Concert Series. For many of these young writers, this workshop will be their first chance to experience playing in a band and performing their original work live. This free event benefits the Alameda Education Foundation’s “Instrument Drop Off” drive. Please bring your unused instruments when you come out to support our island’s young talent on August 27. Last year enough guitars were collected to start a music program at Wood Middle School. For applications and more information, contact Marsha Harrison at (510) 521.8100 or email: marsha.harrison@jamestownproperties.com.

Faces of Alameda Meet John Jacobs, swimmer, family man, third-generation Alamedan and Vice President of the Bank of Alameda

Q. How long have you lived in Alameda? A. All my life! I’m a third generation Alamedan, born and bred right here on the island. I have two girls, and they are the fourth generation of Jacobs to inhabit the island. Q. You’re the V.P. of the Bank of Alameda, right? Tell us about this hometown institution.

A. Bank of Alameda offers a range of high-tech banking services, and because I’ve lived here so long, I get the privilege of working with people I’ve known all my life. Recently, a staffer from my old elementary school deposited a check. Because of our long association, I was able to waive the normal hold requirement on her deposit. I wouldn’t be able to do that in a big city.

Q. Any thoughts about the Alameda Towne Centre name change? A. Smart move! Not only is it a good decision in terms of public will, it’s also a smart business decision. Returning the name to “Alameda South Shore Center” makes good sense, geographically.
