Pop-Up Madness

Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as Creative Manager for Jamestown Properties. This quarter, George explores pop-up shopping.

T

oasters aren’t the only thing popping up these days. “Flash” retail shops and restaurants are popping up all over the country. It’s no surprise; pop-up shopping is a win-win for just about everyone involved.

Recently, Chelsea Market in New York City took pop-up dining to a whole new level with the introduction of JBF LTD - the most exciting popup food pavilion and restaurant Manhattan has ever seen. But NYC isn’t the only place where flash retail is popping up. Last year, Warehouse Row in Chattanooga, TN, paired designers Billy Reid and Alabama Chanin with regional culinary favorite Blackberry Farm for “Crafted by Southern Hands,” a weekend of food tastings and one-of-a-kind shopping celebrating the spirit of the South. 999 Peachtree in Atlanta, GA recently hosted a series of pop-up shops in conjunction with Fashion’s Night Out. One participating retailer, Revolution 11, liked the space so much that they decided to stay long-term. But pay attention! Pop-ups come and go quickly by design. In 2010, Yee-Haw Industries popped up at 999 Peachtree in Atlanta, GA

Alameda Theatre

Time travel is possible at this Alameda community treasure

C

entral Avenue wouldn’t be Central Avenue without the glorious, glittering Alameda Theatre sign beckoning from the roadside. Three years after the city completed its $37.3 million dollar restoration project, Alameda Theatre continues to thrive with 7 newly built, state-of-the-art Cineplex Theatres showing first-run blockbuster films. The 1932 historic theatre has been restored to its original over-the-top art deco design with the latest visual and audio technology. Now moviegoers can experience headliner films in both standard and 3D on the largest 3D screen in the world while relaxing in reclining seats. Now that’s the way to see a movie! This fall, visitors have enjoyed the theatre’s Classic Film Series, featuring all the greats from African Queen to East of Eden. The series continues this November with Red River (11/2-3), Treasure of the Sierra Madre (11/9-10), Topkapi (11/16-17) and White Christmas (11/30-12/1). It concludes, fittingly, with one of the most classic of all classic films, It’s a Wonderful Life (12/7-8). While you’re at the theatre, be sure to recycle your cups and compost your popcorn! There are organic

waste receptacles in each of the 8 theatres. If you’re looking for a great holiday gift idea, the theatre box office sells booklets of gift certificates (five $5 certificates in each booklet). These make great stocking stuffers and can be redeemed for snacks as well as movie tickets. Or, consider a party package, which includes snacks, a movie and one hour in the beautiful historic mezzanine overlooking the lobby! For more information, visit alamedatheatres.com.

Faces of Alameda

Meet Sharine Thenard: Traveler, mother to a labradoodle named Kona, Alameda resident and DDS at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry

Q. Outside of protecting kid’s teeth, what do you love to do? A. I’m a big traveler -- I’ve been all over the world. But sometimes I sneak teeth into my traveling. I recently took 7 staff members on a humanitarian trip to Jamaica, where we were able to help treat kids who’d never even seen a dentist before. Q. What’s it feel like, coming home to Alameda after you’ve traveled all over the world? A. I really enjoy traveling, but I’ve lived in Alameda all my life and it’s always great to come home. Q. What’s one of your favorite things about Alameda? A. Our 4th of July parade is one of the longest in the country! The team at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry is usually part of the parade and enjoys handing out toothbrushes. Q. How is it to treat your former classmates’ kids? A. Ha! It’s awesome. I love to catch up with my former classmates and get to know their kids.
