Faces of Georgetown In each issue, we feature a Q&A with a Georgetown resident, employee, business owner or personality. This issue, meet Joe Sternlieb, new CEO of the Georgetown Business Improvement District.
Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t at the BID? A: I co-founded and continue to sit on the Board of DC Vote, and I spend a lot of time watching my kids play sports. My daughter rows crew and my son plays soccer. When I have a rare free day, I love to sail, ski or even golf. Q: What’s your vision for Georgetown’s next 5 years? How about the next 25? A: My vision for Georgetown is to preserve and strengthen all of the things that make it great. Over the next five years we need to bring the street car into Georgetown and connect this
All Skate! E
very November, skaters flock to the frozen fountain at Rockefeller Center in NYC. This year, Washington DC is getting its very own seasonal skating experience at Georgetown’s Washington Harbour fountain. And, at 11,800 square-feet, Washington Habour’s rink is bigger than Rockefeller Center’s! Rink admission is $9 for adults and $7 for children, seniors and military members. Skate rental is $5, and for those who are a little wobbly on their skates, lesson packages are available. The rink is also available for birthday parties and private rental. Rink hours are 10am to 10pm Saturdays, 10am to 7pm Sundays and 12pm to 9pm most other days, including Christmas and New Year’s Day! Find info at: thewashingtonharbour.com/skating.

neighborhood to the rest of the city. Over the next 25 years I’d either like to see the Whitehurst Freeway taken down and replaced by a Boulevard on K Street that will open up the entire neighborhood to the waterfront, or a major capital project to make the Whitehurst an asset. Q: What’s the BID’s role in helping to implement those goals? A: One of my first priorities is to hire a full time Transportation Director at the BID. This person will organize a stakeholder group to lobby the DC and Federal Government to bring the street car through Georgetown.
Marketplaces
Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as VP of Creative and Marketing for Jamestown.
I
travel a lot, and everywhere I go, I fall in love with products I find. Marketplaces often offer up the best treasures. I could shop for days at Star Provisions in Atlanta or Chelsea Market in New York City, where not only will you find the freshest meats and cheeses—you’ll also discover the coolest tableware on which to serve your delicacies. So often marketplaces embody the history and spirit of a neighborhood. Right here in DC, for instance, the Georgetown Market, located at 3276 M Street, was built in 1865 on the site
of an earlier 1795 market, which was the first public market in Washington, DC. The space is now occupied by a Dean and Deluca gourmet food store, and it blows my mind to realize the site has played host to the city’s food trade for more than 300 years! The unique marketplace communities I find in places like Georgetown definitely inspire Jamestown’s placemaking. For more about some of the markets mentioned here, visit mixsonmarket.com, starprovisions. com and chelseamarket.com.

L’Eclat de Verre F
ounded more than 30 years ago by Jacques, Robert and Didier Lamonnier, the original L’Eclat de Verre began as an arts and crafts supply shop in Versailles, France. The brothers became versed in the art of French art framing and eventually expanded the business to include shops in Georgetown and Bethesda, Maryland. French art framing differs from American framing in the techniques used to create matting. Where American framers use machines to cut their bevels, specially trained French

There is at least one certified master framer on staff at each L’Eclat de Verre location. These artisans have trained for at least 4 years in both 18th century and modern French framing techniques. This dedication to craftsmanship is the hallmark of any L’Eclat de Verre frame. Discover more online at eclatedeverre.com.
