STOPWASTE

Y

ou’re invited to the 2014 StopWaste Business Efficiency Awards celebration on March 13, 2014.

We are excited to announce that South Shore Center has been selected by StopWaste to receive the Waste Reduction Excellence in Commercial Property Management award. On March 13, local public agency StopWaste will celebrate the 2014 StopWaste Business Efficiency Awards. This inspiring event will recognize businesses from around the county—including several from Oakland—for outstanding achievements in waste reduction and business efficiency. The industries represented by this year’s award recipients include manufacturing, restaurants, food production, social media innovation, building material suppliers, and compost producers, as well as commercial & residential property management.

4

MARCH 13 Help celebrate the winners, hear their success stories and learn how your own company can reduce waste and become more efficient.

Join StopWaste Thursday, March 13, 8:00-10:30am, at Zero Net Energy Center—14600 Catalina Street, San Leandro—for a light breakfast at 8am followed by the StopWaste awards program at 8:30am.

Following the recognition program, guests are invited to join an optional 30-minute tour of the Zero Net Energy Center—the largest commercial building in California that produces more energy than it consumes. The facility’s renewable energy systems and state-of-the-art efficiency features also serve as hands-on models for the Center’s electrical industry training programs. The StopWaste awards event is free, but an RSVP is required. For more information and to register visit StopWaste.org/2014Awards.

CARTER'S

W

e are pleased to announce that Carter's, a popular brand of children's clothing and

accessories, will open at South Shore Center this spring. The new store will be located close to Kohl's and LensCrafters on the west end of the center. Carter's decided to locate at South Shore Center due to the recent influx of family-friendly tenants and our focus on events that appeal to children, teens and adults. "With more visitors coming to South Shore Center for family events, dining, and shopping, Carter's realized this was an excellent opportunity for a new store location," said Julie Taylor, Senior Vice President of Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank. Carter's, Inc. is the largest branded marketer in the United States of apparel and related products exclusively for babies and young children. The Company owns the Carter's and OshKosh B'gosh brands, two of the most recognized kids brands in the marketplace. These brands are sold in leading department stores, national chains, and specialty retailers domestically and internationally. They are also sold through more than 700 company-operated stores in the United States, Canada, and Japan and online at carters.com and oshkoshbgosh.com. Learn more at carters.com.

FEATURED

N

o time of year is sweeter than Girl Scout Cookie time! And this year, the Girl Scouts of Alameda are

back at South Shore Center. You'll find them in Neptune Court and outside of Panera Bread this February and March as follows: •

FRIDAYS: FIRST SHIFT: 3PM - 6PM; SECOND SHIFT: 6PM - 9PM (February 14, 21, 28 and March 7 & 14)

SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS: FIRST SHIFT: 9AM - 12PM; SECOND SHIFT 12PM - 3PM; THIRD SHIFT 3PM 6PM; AND FOURTH SHIFT 6PM - 9PM (February 15, 16, 22, 23 and March 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 & 16)

Selling Girl Scout cookies teaches girls how to interact professionally with a wide variety of clients. The girls gain hands-on experience in running a small business and get to bask in the benefits that come with being a bona fide "cookie professional". We encourage you to "Tagalong®" this season and support your Scouts. (Although, be honest: does anyone really need a reason to buy Thin Mints® and Samoas®?) Girl Scout cookie season only comes once a year! Don't miss your favorite flavors!

YUM!

Upstate Chili South Shore Center's sister property Chelsea Market, a worldfamous indoor food hall in New York City, recently published a cookbook. We thought it would be fun to share highlights from this highly refined "not your granddaddy's chili" recipe from Chelsea's best meat market, Dickson Farmstand Meats.

G

ourmet beef shank, preferably boned and ground by an artisan butcher with a "chili" blade, marinated overnight in a mixture con-

taining guajillo and de arbol chiles, vinegar, salt, cumin, oregano, and cloves sets this amazing chili quite apart from its more pedestrian counterparts. Not only does the cut of meat lend a luxurious smoothness to the sauce, but artisan ingredients like Turkish Urfa Biber chile flakes also give an exotic flavor to this uncommonly good chili recipe. Find a how-to video at Fox News (search "upstate chili"), download the full recipe from Epicurious, and get your own copy of the Chelsea Market Cookbook at Amazon.com!

PERFORCE

J

oin us in giving a big round of applause to the Perforce Foundation, who just wrapped up another successful sea-

son of ice skating on the beach with The Little Ice Rink. We saw more than 20,000 skaters this season, and here are a few of our favorite action shots! We look forward to welcoming Perforce and The Little Ice Rink back again next year. Meanwhile, visit them online at thelittleicerink.com.
