Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
JCT Kitchen’s Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival, benefitting Georgia Organics, is back and better than ever Sunday, July 22, 2012.
B
y the time this issue of WSPD News hits the stands, 2012’s Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival (AKTF) will be almost upon us! Now in its fourth year, this unique festival pairs chefs and mixologists with local farmers. Each team competes to bring guests the best tomato-inspired dishes and drinks. Celebrity judges, including David Miller, who played Mason Dixon in the original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movie, will choose the winning dishes. In addition to tasting amazing food, guests will rock out to live enter-
tainment by The Spazmatics and Five Bone Rack, a local band comprised of JCT’s Chef Ford Fry and other Atlanta chefs. Event sponsors include Don Julio® Tequila, Farmer’s Botanical Small Batch Organic Gin, Kanon Organic Vodka, Ole Smoky Moonshine, Wild Heaven Craft Beers, Uinta Brewing, Melwood Springs, Atlanta Foods International, Trimark South, Destiny Orbanics and FreshPoint Atlanta. Last year’s event raised $40,000 for Georgia Organics. Tickets are available online at killertomatofest.com.
Introducing WESTFEST Atlanta Get the scoop on WESTFEST, a new two-day arts festival coming to the Westside this October 13th and 14th.
E
very year, Westside kids and parents (along with everyone else in the city) flock to festivals at Inman Park, Decatur, Virginia Highland and Midtown to check out the local character and enjoy what these neighborhoods have to offer. Now, after many years of discussion and planning, Westside is getting its very own arts festival. WESTFEST 2012 kicks off Friday, October 12th at 7:30pm with The HairBall, a celebration benefitting the Atlanta Humane Society. As a nod to the furry beneficiaries, the theme of the party is—you guessed it—big hair! Saturday and Sunday, October 13th to 14th, the whole family will enjoy live music, yummy food, libations and an artist
market featuring more than 100 local and regional artists. Westside Arts District will also be out in full force with a curated art walk through several of Westside’s galleries. Located at the corner of 8th Street between Howell Mill and Northside Drive, WESTFEST is produced by Southern Event Synergy. Learn more about WESTFEST at westfestatl.com.
Kolo Collection: They’re Everywhere! Kolo Collection furnishings have been popping up in outdoor environments all over Georgia.
L
ately, we seem to see Kolo Collection’s outdoor furnishings, planters and shade solutions popping up everywhere. First we noticed their lemon-colored umbrellas dotting Watershed’s veranda. Next we spotted their couches and chairs on the patio at The Spence and their tables and planters on the terraces at SCAD’s Poetter Hall in Savannah. We even found their red umbrellas in a Midtown pocket park off Peachtree Street! Look for Kolo Collection’s wares at Highland Bakery & Tap on 14th Street, the High Museum on Peachtree, Flip Burger on Howell Mill, The Ivy in Buckhead, Twelve Hotel in Atlantic Station—and the list goes on. Kolo Collection is everywhere this summer, and we think Atlanta looks all the better with a little color from Kolo Collection. Visit them online at kolocollection.com. 2
Billy Reid Is Now Open at WSPD Acclaimed menswear designer Billy Reid’s newest showroom is now open at Westside Provisions District.

012 is shaping up to be a banner year for fashion designer Billy Reid. Just days after he opened his new Atlanta showroom at Westside Provisions District, Reid took home the Menswear Designer of the Year trophy at the 2012 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards. For a man who was also the 2010 receipient of the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund and Best New Designer awards, the Louisiana-born Reid is remarkably humble. He says simply, “It’s geat to get some recognition. We’re a really small company. We do all this stuff ourselves, and it’s neat just to watch it grow.” Visit Billy Reid online at billyreid.com.

So. Foodways Alliance
Ashley Woodman
Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs, and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as Creative Manager for Jamestown.
Ashley Toporek Woodman hadn’t planned on opening a store until she spied the corner space that was available at Westside Provisions District. Now her shop, SimplyPut Paper & Gift, is a thriving part of our community.
O
Q. What do you do when you aren’t running SimplyPut? A. Yoga, catching up with my friends, watching my kids sleep :)
ne of the fantastic things about my job is that I frequently get to see my food heroes firsthand. I’ve worked with Chef Anne Quatrano, readying the annual James Beard Foundation Sunday Supper event in New York. I’ve run into Chef Hugh Acheson of Empire State South in the most random places on his book tour. And I’ve gotten to sit front row under moonlit skies and listen to John Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA), spread the gospel of Southern food culture.
Q. Why did SimplyPut choose to locate at WSPD? A. We actually didn’t plan to open a store until we discovered that the corner space next to Seed Factory was available. I felt like it was just meant to be.
SFA is a member-supported group that documents and maps culinary standard bearers in the South, primarily through oral history interviews. From producing a quarterly print newsletter to publishing interactive maps for finding the best BBQ, boudin, tamales and gumbo, SFA collects and preserves the stories of Southern food so that these culinary treasures are available to everyone.
Q. How did you get into the stationery business? A. I was a designer in a firm for years, and I learned that I was happier working with things that folded into cards rather than annual reports and corporate identity. Plus, designing for the average stationery buyer is a heck of a lot more fun!
I first met my great friend Angie Mosier, who is an accomplished food stylist, writer and photographer, at an SFA event in Nashville. We’ve since roadtripped to other SFA events. Most recently, we watched whole hogs moving down Park Ave on forklifts in preparation for the Big Apple Block Party, where the SFA runs a “peep show” of film shorts throughout the weekend. I now relish working with SFA to bring documentaries such as Cud and The Rise of Southern Cheese to Jamestown developments through events like the Potlikker Film Festival. For more information about SFA, including details on how to become involved, visit their website at southernfoodways.org.
Q. How do you help clients who have never ordered custom paper decide what to choose? A. After getting to know our clients and learning about their event and their location, we show them albums of sample designs. Their reactions help us learn which papers and designs will be right for them. Q. Got any SimplyPut insider tips for us? A. Beginning in late August, clients will be able to buy most SimplyPut gifts and paper online through our website! We are incredibly excited!! Q. Is paper still relevant in today’s digital world? A. I get asked this question A LOT. When was the last time you opened a letter in the mail or received an invitation that you didn’t have to click on to view? How did that make you feel? It makes me feel pretty great. I’m a traditionalist at heart with a very modern approach to living. This is how we see our customers, and this is why the Westside is a natural fit for our company. 6
The northside section of the Atlanta BeltLine trail is one Westside project that will benefit from TSPLOST funding. TSPLOST: A Winner for Westside Learn more about how the July 31st Transportation Referendum will impact and improve Westside.
O
If you’re on the fence about TSPLOST, consider that research shows Atlanta commuters spend $924 a year in wasted fuel and lost time, ranking us in the worst 20% nationally. The additional penny tax will cost the average consumer an estimated $112 annually. With that investment, we’ll fix our worst highway interchanges, provide more transportation options and choices, create more jobs for the region and get home faster.
n July 31, voters will decide the fate of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST). This ballot-year mouthful amounts to a 10-year, one-penny regional sales tax that advocates believe will help untie Atlanta’s snarled traffic mess. If passed, TSPLOST will raise $7.2 billion, and every penny must be spent on transportation projects inside Atlanta’s 10-county metro region. One project TSPLOST would help is the northside section of the Atlanta BeltLine Trail, which is on a list of several projects the City of Atlanta anticipates funding with TSPLOST dollars. Construction plans for the northside trail include widening Huff Road from the CSX railroad bridge to Howell Mill and adding sidewalks, a two-way left turn lane at Howell Mill and a multi-use path connecting Huff Road to the northside section of the Atlanta BeltLine trail. The green line on the graphic above represents the Atlanta BeltLine trail with a (dotted green) connection to Huff Road. The dotted blue line shows the projected path for alternate transit.
A yes vote on July 31 will help to untie our traffic knot and make our region more competitive again. Investments in regional transportation will help create and support 200,000 mid to high-paying jobs—and will free up our clogged roadways so we can be more productive at work and spend more time at home. Investing in our region will bring jobs, prosperity and an improved quality of life for decades to come. Visit untieatlanta.com to learn more about how we can untie metro Atlanta’s traffic knot.
