A New Look for WSPD

Atlanta graphic design outfit Brandshake Creative is designing a brand new website for Westside Provisions District.

W

e are pleased to announce that Westside Provisions District will soon have a new look online. We’re thrilled to be working with Brandshake Creative, architects of the Atlanta Beltline and Trees Atlanta websites, on the graphic and information design. Our new look is understated and clean, in tones of chocolate and gunmetal, with orange and blue accents to emphasize WSPD’s relationships with White Provision Residences and Westside Urban Market. Sarah Dorio’s exquisite photography throughout

the site will give viewers a real feel for what it’s like to hang out in the district. We’re keeping core elements of our site, like the blog and complete information for each of our merchants, and we’ll also add new features, such as an interactive events calendar and a visitor page to serve our many out-oftown patrons. Most of all, the new site will unify the various brands associated with WSPD into a single “really good” voice. Look for the new site to launch in November, 2012. westsidepd.com.

{poem88} {Poem88} presents two engaging exhibitions this fall featuring the work of photographer Guy Mendes and painter EK Huckaby.

T

his October, {Poem88} presents Guy Mendes’ 40/40. This black and white photography exhibition traces Mendes’ career through portraits and texts, guiding the viewer through moments in the lives of forty people who have crossed paths with the artist along his own meandering course over the past forty years. In December, {Poem88} presents EK Huckaby’s The Ocean Casts the Greatest Shadow. Working from found images, Huckaby gives

a glimpse into the mysteries and travails of early modernity. In his carefully translucent images, Huckaby congeals extinct animals, light bulbs, and fruit markets, alike, in his homemade concoctions of Old World glazes. {Poem88} presents a variety of complementary programming through musical performances, literary readings, and film screenings. The gallery includes a small bookshop with monographs of compelling 20th and 21st century artists, art theory and criticism and a selection of poetry. poem88.net.

More Mashburn With the expansion and connection of Sid and Ann Mashburn’s shops, there is more Mashburn than ever to love.

W

hen a corner spot adjoining Sid Mashburn at WSPD’s 1198 building became available, Ann Mashburn immediately made plans to expand her shop and connect it to Sid’s. Ann’s expanded shop now includes a niche full of amazing shoes and a bright, airy shop full of new colors and styles for fall. Pass through a door at the back of Ann’s shop to enter Sid’s, where you’ll be greeted by a wall of Sid’s best leather footwear including his signature penny loafers, double monk straps and cap-toe balmorals. Sid and Ann are both participating in Camp Twin Lakes Partners Card Week. Skip to page 7 to find out how to purchase a Partners Card and save 20% with the Mashburns!

Taqueria Del Sol Every August, a truckload of New Mexican Hatch Chiles arrive at Taqueria del Sol. To celebrate, they throw a big party with live music and all-you-can-eat chiles. The entire event benefits the Ossabaw Island Foundation, which works to reveal the voices and mystery of Ossabaw Island. ossabawisland.org.

Volunteers from the Atlanta Union Mission hug it out at WSPD’s 2008 winter festival benefiting Atlanta Union Mission, Atlanta Pet Rescue and other great causes.

Really Good Giving

The merchants of Westside Provisions District give back in so many great ways. We thought we’d highlight some of the good work WSPD merchants do in the district.

F

rom big benefits like Bacchanalia’s Sunday Supper South, benefiting the James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program, and Taqueria del Sol’s Hatch Chile Festival, benefiting the Ossabaw Island Foundation, to ongoing giving like Yeah! Burger’s MoBetter Mondays (celebrated at their Virginia Highland location), many of WSPD’s merchants are involved in giving back to all kinds of really great causes. In this issue, we highlight the ways in which a few of our merchants have chosen to give back in 2012. For more information, visit us online at westsidepd.com.

Room & Board In October 2012, Room & Board participated in the second annual Mattress 500, a bed race benefiting the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta. Teams of five competed to raise awareness and funds for the Furniture Bank, which distributes essential home furnishings to families in need. furniturebankatlanta.org.

Kolo Collection

Gramercy Home

Keller Martin, seven-year-old son of Kolo Collection owners Michelle and Greg Martin, saw a need and decided to start a sock drive. He ended up collecting more than 1100 pairs of “Keller’s Socks” last year for the HEALing Community Center (healingourcommunities.org), and he’s back at it this year. Drop off new white athletic socks to Kolo Collection through 12.29.12.

Yearly, Gramercy hosts the Pink Party to benefit the Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center. The Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center at Piedmont Hospital was the first Breast Center in Georgia to become accredited in all of its modalities. In addition, the Center offers education and support to patients. piedmonthospital.org.

Osteria Del FIGO

Switch Modern

FIGO publishes an annual “Pepper Shaker” calendar to raise awareness for child abuse and neglect. In past years, sales have benefited Children’s Hospital and Wellspring Living. Sales from their 2013 calendar will likely benefit Georgia CASA (gacasa.org), which establishes and supports programs that recruit, screen, train and supervise CASA volunteers.

Three years ago, Roy Otwell’s mother, who suffered with Alzheimer’s, passed away. Since her diagnosis, Roy’s company Switch Modern has worked hard to support the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). Follow Switch at facebook.com/switchmodern to learn about future shopping dates and events benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association.

Marketplaces

Sutton & Donavan

Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends in his capacity as VP of Creative and Marketing for Jamestown.

Meet the newest faces of WSPD, Sutton and Donavan, the beautiful twin girls of Donna Rooks, Director of Operations for Westside Urban Market, and Alyssa McKenna, Property Manager for White Provision.

I

travel a lot, and everywhere I go, I fall in love with products I find. I’ve gotten so inspired, in fact, that I’m bringing some of these goods to a new retail venture, Mixson Market in Charleston. Like Star Provisions in Atlanta or Chelsea Market in New York, Mixson Market will be a hip spot to get quality meat, cheese, coffee, wine and made-to-order sandwiches. More than that, the market will be a community gathering space, a place where people can relax over a cup of coffee or shop for amazing housewares like wool blankets, Herschel Supply Co. backpacks, Falconware enameled plates from the UK, cookbooks and vintage French bread boards. In addition to falling in love with great products, I also relish the unique marketplace communities I find in both small and large towns. That spirit definitely inspires Jamestown’s placemaking. At Warehouse Row in Chattanooga, for instance, we’re working to create an out-of-this-world mercantile food market, starting with local favorites Petunia’s Silver Jalapeño and Southern Burger Company. For more about some of the markets mentioned here, visit mixsonmarket.com, starprovisions.com and chelseamarket.com.

Groundbreaking Greystar and PREI® broke ground this fall on a 197-unit apartment development at the corner of 14th St. and Howell Mill, across from Room & Board. For more information, visit westbridgepartners.net.
