Support Team Hidi! Chef Ryan Hidinger and his wife Jen, foodie and long-time employee of Seed Factory, start a foundation to kick cancer’s ass.

O

n New Year’s Eve, Ryan Hidinger got news that no 35-year-old chef just about to open his dream restaurant wants to hear. He was diagnosed with inoperable Stage 4 gallbladder cancer. Immediately, Ryan and Jen snapped into action. First, they reached out to their friends and asked for prayers and well-wishes. The

restaurant community responded with a website, teamhidi.org. Ryan and Jen started blogging about their journey, and by sharing their story and raising funds for Ryan’s treatment. A “Team Hidi” benefit at the King Plow events center this past January, masterminded by Atlanta’s restaurant

community, raised more than $200,000 for Ryan’s medical treatment. The success of the Team Hidi benefit, and other fundraising events such as “Round up for Ryan” (currently taking place at several local restaurants), made Jen and Ryan realize that Ryan’s story could help benefit other members of the food world. They are currently developing a non-profit, The Giving Kitchen, that will lend a helping hand to chefs and restaurant industry workers impacted by medical or other unanticipated hardships. Ryan is in for a tough fight. A recent update to the Team Hidi blog revealed this his initial chemotherapy treatment did not stunt the growth of his tumors. So Ryan and Jen have made a change in Ryan’s chemo treatment plan, and he recently embarked upon a new weekly cycle of treatment. In a January 21st blog entry, Ryan wrote, “My heart is speechless from your generosity,”and he promised to “fight like hell.” Follow his story at teamhidi.org.

Atlanta MADE Greg and Michelle Martin, owners of Kolo Collection, now bring us a new shop, Atlanta MADE, full of décor, art, home accessorys, jewelry and other merchandise made right here in Atlanta.

G

reg and Michelle Martin have honed their retail chops over the past several years as proprietors of WSPD’s only shop exclusively devoted to outdoor furnishings. Now they’re ready to have some fun. “We come across the most amazing furniture makers and artisans in our line of work,” says Michelle Martin, “I started thinking, how cool would it be to open a store devoted exclusively to products made in Atlanta by Atlanta artisans?” When the old Savvy Snoot space opened up, they decided to go for it. Atlanta MADE, which will open April 19, will have gorgeous reclaimed wood pieces from Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design, custom concrete pieces from Dex Studios, sofas and upholstered items from Bjork Studio, original photography by Kathleen Walker and a bevy of jewelry, accessories and art pieces from other talented local artisans. Blow-Up: five artists at {poem88} Join the crew at {poem88} for Blow-Up, a unique exploration of five artists. Blow-Up will be on exhibit at the gallery through May 25.

T

aking its name from the classic 1966 Antonioni film, Blow-Up features the work of five artists: Nikita Gale, In Kyoung Chun, Sharon Shapiro, Ben Steele (pictured right), and Nancy VanDevender. Each artist explores aspects of cinematic language or storytelling, but more specific to the film, is an exploration of nonresolution. Both physically and psychologically, meaning is subverted and questioned: the blow-up does not yield clarity and the protagonist remains aimless. In paintings, drawings, installation and text-based works, this existential question is addressed. Pictured right is Blow-Up - I Knocked But I Stopped At A Distance (2013) by artist Nancy VanDevender. In addition to Blow-Up and other great exhibits, {Poem88} also has great film, music, art and literature events. Be sure to check out their events page at poem88.net.

Meet Tim “the Cheeseman” From fighting crime to fondling curd, it’s been a long, strange trip for Star Provisions’ star cheesemonger, Tim Gaddis. Follow him on Facebook at Tim Gaddis “Atlanta’s Cheesemonger” to learn more.

T

im gave up his a job as a police officer years ago for a chance to work with mentor Anne Quatrano, owner of Star Provisions and Bacchanalia. She placed him in the cheese department just before the 2003 holiday rush, and he hasn’t looked back since. Now, not only is Tim an avid connoisseur of curd, he’s also the curator of Atlanta Cheese Week, Atlanta’s only in-depth cheese festival. Tim masterminded the concept of a cheese-of-themonth club, where cheese lovers can pay a subscription fee and receive his special selections (about 1.5 pounds of cheese plus accoutrements) delivered to your door each month. Tim’s specialty is Southern cheese, which is often overlooked on the world’s cheese stage. His dedication and deep knowledge led Food & Wine Magazine to call him an “unsung hero” and place Star Provisions’ cheese shop in the top five among U.S. cheese shops. Meet Jan McCurry

Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends as VP of Creative and Marketing for Jamestown.

WSPD would probably flood, flame and fall off the map if it wasn’t for our tireless property manager Jan McCurry. Meet the woman behind the magic.

I

have an unconventional playlist for running—a lot of folk. Nothing lights a fire under my feet more than Willie Nelson’s cover of “City of New Orleans.” Recently, I was on my usual jaunt down the Hudson River Park Greenway listening to one of my favorite string bands, Old Crow Medicine Show, a group introduced to me by Billy Reid’s Sarah Trapp in Nashville a few years ago. Billy Reid has a rich history in promoting musicians, and it got me thinking about the partnerships that Jamestown shares with its local music communities. It’s a thrill to host talented musicians at Jamestown’s properties, and nothing enlivens a space or brings a community together like a live band. This summer in San Luis Obispo, California, we’ve planned an eight-week jazz series, Court Street’s Concerts on the Terrace, as a teaser to the first-ever SLO Jazz Festival, which will be held in Mission Plaza on September 29th. In New York, where rehearsal space is at a premium, our events coordinator Michael Ginsberg often loans the use of Chelsea Market’s 400-foot concourse to local musicians for public rehearsals.

S

he’s staked out surveillance from the roof of JCT. bar, leapt into action when the bridge on Howell Mill Road threatened to collapse last year, shepherded dozens of new merchants through the build-out process and done it all with a joke and a smile. Meet Jan McCurry, former marine and property manager for the north end (Bacchanalia-Anthropologie) of Westside Provisions District.

Music is also an essential component for fundraising. Ponce City Market in Atlanta kicked off its groundbreaking in October 2011 with a huge blockparty–style concert, headlined by The Indigo Girls. Party at Ponce helped Jamestown raise more than $80,000 for local charities. Nothing gets people, places or “people places” going like live music. I hope to see you at a concert on a Jamestown property soon.

When we asked her how she managed to stay on top of everything she’s asked to do, she quickly gave the credit to her dedicated maintenance team (Hernan Soler, Sergio Ramirez and Maria Ramirez.) She also said she relies on her trusty i-devices to keep track of multiple calendars and to-do lists. Be sure to say hi to Jan, Hernan, Sergio or Maria if you see them working around WSPD. 6

Runningnerds West Midtown 5k The 2nd annual runningnerds West Midtown 5K sprints off from the Howard School April 20th. Have you registered yet?

R

unningnerds race director Tes Sobomehin couldn’t possibly be more excited about this year’s West Midtown 5K and Kid’s Fun Run. “Last year was a big success, and this year I am very excited to see the event grow for the community,” she says. The runningnerds 5K & runningnerds kids fun run is a celebration of the Atlanta running and fitness community. It’s one of the only stroller-friendly, dog-friendly races in the neighborhood. Both the 5K and the fun run kick off Saturday, April 20th at 7:45am from the Howard School campus at 1192 Foster Street. Registration for the 5K is $25, and just $5 for the kid’s fun run. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Howard School, the Brian Jordan Foundation, Ian’s Friends Foundation and other local charities. For more information, register at active. com and visit runningnerdnation.com.

Elan and Walton: New Apartments Two new luxury apartment communities are sprouting up next door to Westside Provisions District

I

f you’ve been by the district lately, you’ve surely seen the new construction going on at Walton Communities (just west of JCT. Kitchen) and Elan (at the corner of 14th and Howell Mill.) These two new apartment complexes are going to provide fantastic amenities and great new living options for clients looking to live in the heart of West Midtown. Walton Westside (pictured right) will offer 254 oneand-two-bedroom apartments. Elan Westside will include eleven thousand square feet of WSPD-quality retail and restaurant space on the lower level with 197 luxury apartments above. Amenities at both properties will be first-class—and of course, one of those amenities will include premium access to WSPD! Learn more at WaltonWestside.com and elanwestside.com.
